Expansion sealing cap It is known that for sealing liquid reservoirs - in particular gasoline tanks of motorcycles or automobiles, cans, radiators automobile - it is already known to use plugs comprising a flexible seal in the form of a cup ren closing an expander spring and the bottom of which rests on a support member which can be pressed against it by means of appropriate order numbers.
During this pressure, the support or gane causes the expansion of the expander spring, therefore that of the skirt of the seal which comes to rest against the inner wall of the tubing of the reservoir, which has the effect of ensuring the tight fixing of the stopper on said tubing. Naturally, the removal of the cap with a view to filling the reservoir is effected by the reverse maneuver.
In the currently known plugs of this type, the expander spring consists of a cap with a rolled edge and having radial windows allowing crushing and successive expansion of said spring during the closing maneuver, which has the effect of reducing the distance between the support member of the seal and the underside of the cap cover.
The control can be carried out, for example, by means of a threaded rod carried by the cover and at the free end of which the support member of the seal is screwed, or by means of a device lever and eccentric to provide traction or com pression at the end of a rod carrying said member and sliding in the cover.
Whatever the mode of control, the spring in the form of a cap with radial slots is somewhat fragile, in particular when the control is effected by a screw and the tightening is not limited. In addition, its manufacture is relatively expensive.
The present invention relates to a plug of the same type, but in which these drawbacks are avoided.
The plug according to the invention is a plug with an expansion seal carried by a rod mounted on the cover of the plug, characterized in that the seal is constituted by a cup made of flexible and elastic material which, d 'on the one hand, presses on a rigid cap carried by said rod mounted on the cover, and which, on the other hand, contains a torus-shaped spring in which is engaged a rigid cup with conical walls, the edge of which presses against the cover, the whole being arranged so that the bringing together of said cap towards the cover thus causes the increasingly pronounced engagement of said torus-shaped spring around the conical walls of the rigid bowl,
therefore the expansion of this spring and that of said elastic cup forming a seal.
The appended drawing represents, by way of examples, two forms and an alternative embodiment of the stopper which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows in perspective and sepa res the various members that the stopper comprises according to the first embodiment shown in FIG. 2, in axial section, and mounted on a pipe of a reservoir, the control being effected by screw and nut; fig. 3 is a variant of this same plug; the fi-. 4 is an axial sectional view of a second embodiment in which the control is effected by an eccentric lever.
In the device according to FIGS. 1 and 2, 1 designates the cover which covers a pipe 2 of the reservoir and serves as an operating member, said cover comprising for this purpose a threaded axial rod 3 fixed to it internally. This rod preferably has one or more longitudinal grooves 4 intended to allow air to enter the tank.
On the rod 3 is mounted a rigid bowl 5, the side walls of which are conical or curved and the edge of which has a certain number of corrugations 6 on which the cover 1 rests, thus leaving between it and the edge of the bowl a game allowing the reentry of the air.
On the same rod 3 is also mounted a seal made of an elastic material, also in the shape of a cup, having a bottom 7, and the concavity of which is turned towards the side of the neck 1, while the side wall or skirt 8 is intended to be applied against the inner wall of the tubing 2 of the reservoir.
Inside this elastic seal is housed a coil spring 13 in the form of a torus placed against the side wall 8 of this seal, the inner contour of this O-ring spring being placed opposite. tapered or domed side walls of the rigid bowl 5.
Finally, at the free end of the rod is screwed a support member or movable stopper in the form of a cap 9, the edges of which are extended by a cylindrical wall 10. An elastic clamp 11, or similar member, housed in a groove 12 of the rod 3, prevents the untimely separation of the rod and the stop 9-10.
Any displacement of the cap 9 on the threaded rod 3 has the effect, depending on the direction of this displacement, of causing an expansion of the spring 13 or of allowing its contraction with a corresponding action on the side wall 8 of the elastic seal, the displacement of the cap being controlled by screwing the threaded rod into this cap, that is to say by rotating the cover 1.
In fact, the bringing together of the cap relative to the cover causes the application of this cap against the bottom 7 of the elastic seal and consequently a pressure of the torus-shaped spring 13 against the conical side walls of the bowl 5; this cup therefore penetrates further inside the spring and ensures its expansion, thus causing the side wall 8 of the elastic seal to press more against the interior wall of the orifice 2. It should be noted that the clamping stroke of the plug is limited by the possibility of crushing. the bottom 7 of the seal between the bottom of the bowl 5 and the cap 9.
When the cap is in the closed position, air can enter the interior of the tubing 2 and the reservoir through the space between the cover 1 and the bowl 5, then through the groove 4 of the rod 3, this cap louse thus perfectly serving to seal the fuel tanks for supplying an engine. If, as a result of tremors, the liquid from the reservoir is projected towards the cover 1, this liquid does not ooze outside, but falls back into the bottom of the bowl 5 to subsequently flow into the reservoir.
The variant according to FIG. 3 does not differ from the embodiment shown in FIG. 2 only by a slight modification of the cap 9-10, the purpose of which is to prevent any seepage of liquid or any passage of air along the rod 3. For this purpose, the central part of the bottom of the cap 9 is shaped and tapped so as to act as a nut for the threaded rod 3; this part is prolonged beyond the rod 3 and closed by a kind of inverted bell 22. It can be seen immediately that, in this way, the sealing by making the stopper is ensured.
Fig. 4 shows the application of the invention to the tilting plug of the known type which fits on the edge of the tubing of the tank by means of a clamp and which is controlled by an eccentric lever articulated above of the cap cover.
In this figure, 2 denotes, as previously, the tubing of the reservoir. Around this tubing is fitted a clamping collar 14 carrying a tilting axis 15 of a cover 16, shaped at its upper part to form a housing 17 in which is articulated an eccentric 18, fork-shaped, integral with 'a long lever 19. A common axis 20 connects the eccentric 18 to a rod 21, flattened where it engages in the fork of the eccentric, and threaded in the part opposite to the articulation.
On said rod are mounted successively as on the rod 3 of the stopper, according to the embodiment of FIG. 2: a rigid bowl 5 which bears under the cover, an elastic seal in the form of a bowl 7-8, a bearing cap 9 having in its center a threaded opening, through which it is screwed onto the rod 21. Also as in the embodiment according to FIG. 2 or fig. 3, an expander coil spring 13 is interposed between the conical or domed side walls of the cup 5 and the birth of the skirt 8 of the elastic seal.
The expansion of the spring 13, and consequently that of the elastic seal, are caused as before by a displacement of the cap 9 towards the cover 16, and by the resulting sinking of the cup 5 in the O-ring spring 13.
The displacement of the cap 9 towards the cover 16 is obtained by a lifting of the rod 21 by the eccentric 18 resulting from a lowering of the lever 19. The release of the stopper is obtained by the reverse operation of the lever 19, after which the plug can be tilted upwards around the axis 15 of the clamping collar, the edges of the cap 9 not being extended by a cylindrical wall, in order, precisely, to allow this tilting. .
Naturally, this embodiment of the object of the invention has the same advantages as that according to FIG. 2. In the embodiment according to FIG. @ 4, the cap 9 could be integral with the free end of the rod 21, but it is preferable that this cap can be screwed onto this rod, in order to allow the relative positions of the different organs to be adjusted. . born from the plug, -and consequently the functioning of the latter.
