Device for fuel injection. The object of this invention is a device for the injection of fuel, intended for example for supplying the cylinders of an internal combustion engine, comprising a casing inside which is arranged a common plate cam controlling movement. reciprocating in their plunger cylinders whose axes are parallel to the axis of rotation of said cam and equidistant from this axis, and a booster pump comprising a pumping element moving parallel to the axis of the cam, and a mechanism for controlling the reciprocating movement of this element from the cam.
This device is characterized according to the invention in that said element. pom page is disposed inside said casing, coaxially with the common plate cam.
The drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the pump which is the subject of the invention and two variants of this embodiment.

Fig. 8 is a partial sectional view, corresponding substantially to part of FIG. 2, but showing a first variant of this embodiment.
Fig. 9 is a partial elevation in section, showing a second variant of this embodiment.
Fig. 10 is a plan view of this second variant, and FIG. 11 is a sectional view along XI = XI of FIG. 10.
In all the figures in the drawing, the same reference numerals denote corresponding parts.
The embodiment shown com takes an envelope 1, of substantially cylindrical shape, and. pump cylinders (not shown) fixed in the right end of this envelope. The axes of these cylinders are parallel to the axis of the casing, equi distant from the latter, and are angularly equally spaced around this axis.
Of. pis tons divers 2 including. the outer ends are visible in fig. 2 are arranged in the respective cylinders of the injection pumps of the device and pass through control sleeves, not shown, which are mounted in a common adjustment member which is not shown either and which is capable of 'be operated by hand by means of a central axial extension placed inside a tubular extension 3 of the casing 1 (fig. 1). This central axial extension can be actuated by means of a lever 4.
The common adjustment member is arranged inside the casing 1, near a transverse partition 5 (FIG. 2). A compressible bellows-shaped membrane is disposed between said common adjustment member and said transverse partition 5, this bellows, not shown, being fixed at its ends to said parts respectively. The space contained in the bellows communicates with a connector 6 intended to be connected to the intake manifold of an engine supplied by the injection pumps of the device shown. The space surrounding this bellows inside the casing 1 communicates through a sealed outlet orifice with a connection intended to be connected to a fuel tank via a return duct.
Each plunger piston has an axial bore which extends from that of its ends which is located inside the corresponding cylinder until approximately opposite the corresponding control sleeve. At this location, this bore opens out to the cylindrical surface of the plunger piston through a radial bore formed in this piston. As a result of this arrangement, the delivery of the plunger pistons of the pump is adjusted in accordance with the position of each of the respective control sleeves with respect to the corresponding udder, the bores made in the pistons communicating with the space surrounding the bellows. at a more or less advanced moment in the stroke of each piston, so that fuel in the respective cylinders is discharged into said space.
It will be understood that, by virtue of the restriction of the outlet orifice of this space, the pressure of the fuel around the bellows varies in accordance with the quantity of fuel discharged from the injection cylinders per unit of time, the bellows being influenced by these changes in pressure, so as to automatically adjust the position of the adjusting sleeves, so that a regulating effect is thus exerted on the operation of the fuel injection pumps. The discharges of the injection pump cylinders each communicate with a screwed connection in the casing 1.
The outer ends of the plungers 2 pass with play through openings formed in the partition 5 to the interior of a chamber 7 of the casing 1 which communicates freely with a chamber 8 of this casing containing a cam with a common plate 9, coaxial with the casing 1 and arranged to control the plunging pistons 2 by means of sliding members 10 carrying rollers 11 which cooperate with the active face 9a of the cam. The plungers and the members 10 are brought back towards the cam by springs.
The annular gap extending between each of the plungers? and the edge of the corresponding opening made clans la. partition 5 is sealed faeeon to the moi-en a gland not shown. In this way, the two chambers 7 and 8 formed inside the casing 1 are in fact separated from the chamber which contains. the common adjustment device.
The sliding members 10 are mounted in guides 1 \? formed clans part of the casing 1 in the center of which is also provided a bore 13 coaxial with the casing and having an open end facing the partition 5. A cylindrical liner 14, presenting. an annular groove 15 at its. outer part and slots 16 formed at its inner end, is arranged in the bore 13. This jacket forms the side wall clu eylindre of a feed pump. The slots 16 are used for. communicate the.
groove 15 with the inner space 17 of the cylinder. A pump piston 18 is slidably disposed within the liner, and this piston is normally biased to move toward the closed end of the cylinder by a spring 19 which is disposed between the cylinder. piston 18 and an annular pressure plate 20 fixed around the open end of the cylinder. This pressure plate which also serves to hold the liner 14 in position has a flange 21 which extends inwardly from a central opening 22 of said plate and all. around this opening.
This flange serves to stiffen the plate 20 and also to hand hold in position the adjacent end of the res out 19. A rod 23 having a free T-shaped end, 23a, is fixed to the center of the piston 18 and extends axially. . The lateral arms of said end 23a of this rod are housed in notches 24a formed in an actuating lever 24 between its ends, on either side of a rectangular slot 25 inside which the adjacent part of the shank of the rod 23.
The dimensions of the slot 25 are such that the T-shaped end, 23a, of the rod 23 can pass through this slot without much play after it has been rotated 90 about the axis. of the rod, the protruding arms of the T shaped part being moved opposite the longer edges of the slot to be brought into a position in which they can engage in the notches 24a.
The actuating lever 24 extends substantially diametrically relative to the casing 1 and parallel to the partition 5 At one of its ends 24b (FIG. 3), this lever is forked and surrounds a flattened extension 26a which extends from the end of a member 26 mounted to slide and which corresponds to the members 10. This member 26 (see also fig. 4) is smaller than said members 10, it bears against the one of its ends on the lever 24 and carries, at its opposite end, a roller 27 which cooperates with the active face 9a of the cam 9.
The correct arrangement of this roller is ensured by the connection existing between the extension 26a and the forked end 2-1b of the actuation lever 24. In the vicinity of its opposite end, this actuation lever is mounted. so as to be able to pivot at 28 on the part of the casing 1 -in which the guides for the members 10 and 26 are formed. This end of the lever 24 passes with play through an opening 29 formed in the casing 1. Close to this opening, a substantially radial bore 30 opens onto the outer surface of casing 1.
This bore com municates at its inner end with the space which is between the annular groove 15 of the sleeve 14 and the wall of the cylindrical bore 13 inside which this sleeve is arranged.
On the outer surface of the casing 1 of the pump is mounted a separate body 31 which covers the opening 29 as well as the end of the radial bore 30. The inner face of this body is recessed at 32, according to a shallow depth, and two passages for viewing check valves 33 and 34 housed in the body 31 and, arranged to close in opposite directions, open into this recess.
The valve 33 which opens from the recess 32 controls the communication between this recess 32 and a channel 35 opening into a deep recess 36 of the body 31, the open end of this recess 36 corresponding to the opening 29 The recess 36 is deep enough to contain with adequate clearance the projecting end of the lever 24. The valve 34 which opens towards the shallow recess 32 in the interior face of the body 31 controls the communication between the recess 32 and a connector intended to be connected to an feed duct, itself connected to a fuel tank.
The part of the shallow recess 32, into which the passage 30 and the passages controlled by the valves 33 and 34 open, is separated by un.garniture 37 .from the other part of this recess, into which the deep recess 36.
It will be appreciated that as the plate cam 9, 9a rotates, the actuating lever 24 swings around its pivot 28 and the piston 18 moves back and forth inside the jacket 14, so that fuel is pumped. from the reservoir, through the appropriate pressure relief valves 33 and 34, to chamber 7 of casing 1.
This chamber communicates freely through passages 38 and 39 with the chamber 8 which communicates with an outlet connector 40 to which is connected a duct not shown which ends in a filter not shown, a duct also not shown returning from this filter and being connected to an intake connector 41, fixed at another location of the casing 1, to bring fuel to the inlets of the injection cylinders. If desired, the filter can be omitted, and chamber 8 can be directly connected to the inlet of the injection cylinders by one or more passages formed in the casing 1.
A shaft 42, which extends across the protruding end of the actuating lever 24 is arranged so as to be able to rotate inside the body 31. In the vicinity of said protruding end, this shaft has a flat diametrical face 42a on which the said end bears when the piston 18 connected to the lever 24 is at the inner end of its stroke. The shaft 42 extends to the outside of the body 31, on the outside of which a short arm 43 is attached to this. shaft 42. This arm is suitably shaped so that it can be easily operated with the thumb.
When this arm is pressed, it causes a partial rotation of the shaft 42 whose flat 42a actuates the actuating lever 24 in the manner of a cam, in the desired direction to pull the piston 18 out of the way. its cylinder 13. When the arm 43 is released, the spring 19 is allowed to return the piston 18 to its internal position, so that, when said arm 43 is actuated rapidly several times in succession, the feed pump makes my ter fuel from the tank and brings it to the fuel injection cylinder inlets.
In the variant shown in FIG. 8, the cylindrical bore 13 is shallower than that shown in FIG. 2 and is extended by a central axial recess 13a, formed in its closed end and serving to guide a central stud 44 which projects from a disc-shaped member 45. In turn, this member 45 is provided with of a rod 46 which extends axially and which engages with the actuating lever 24. A flexible bellows member 48 is fixed between the disc-shaped member 45 and an annular fixing plate 47, fixed itself around the mouth of the cylindrical recess 13. The radial bore 30 which opens into the valve casing 31 opens, on the other hand, into the space between the bellows 48 and the walls of the valve. cylindrical bore 13.
It will be appreciated that, in this variant, the feed pump is constituted by a diaphragm pump which operates exactly in the same way as the piston feed pump described with reference to FIGS. 1 to 7. For the rest, this variant is identical to the arrangement in figs. 1 to 7.
Figs. 9 and 10 show another variant in which the cylindrical bore 13 is closed at its end adjacent to. the, cloi sound 5 and open next to the cam at. plate 9. The sleeve 14 is inserted in this. bore through its open end and. presents an annular groove 15, communicating by slots with the interior space of the. liner, and which is arranged to correspond to the passage 30 which connects .l'orage 13 to the recess. 32 of the body 31. A piston 18 is disposed inside the sleeve 14, and this piston is connected with play to a rod 49, this rod and this piston being normally kept away from one of the the other by springs 50 arranged inside the pis ton 18.
In this variant, the piston 18 is actuated by means of an extension. 51 of a pin 52 which constitutes the pivot of the roller 11, cooperating with the active face of the cam 9, of a sliding member 10 arranged between the cam and the plungers. A longitudinal slot 53 is formed in the sleeve 14 and in the wall which separates the bore 13 from the bore 12 in which said bore. member 10 is mounted.
The extension 51 of the stud 52 extends through this slot, and it is fixed in a transverse bore formed in the piston rod 49 by means of a point screw 54.
We realize that, when the member 10 in question moves back and forth due to the rotation of the cam 9, this movement is transmitted to the piston key rod 49 by the pin 51, 52, this rod 49 in turn driving the piston 18 via the springs 50 during discharge key bags, unless the fuel pressure tends to increase to an excessive value determined by the forces of the springs 50. In this case, these springs are compressed during the compression stroke of piston rod 49.
In this variant, the arrangement of the valves of the feed pump is slightly different from that shown in FIGS. 5 to 7. As can be seen in FIGS. 10 and 11, the inlet valve 34 and the discharge valve 33 are arranged substantially identical to that already described, although these valves are located in slightly different places. However, channel 35, instead of ending up in the deep recess. 36, as shown in FIG. 6, opens into a bore 54 formed in the body 31. The mouth of this bore 54 is surrounded by a part of the gasket 37, so that the fuel delivered through this mouth can not escape into the liner. 'obviously 32.
The key mouthpiece the bore 54 corresponds to a passage, not shown, which is formed through the casing 1 of the pump and which opens into the recess in which the plate cam 9 turns. It is realized that the variant shown in fig. 9 to It operates in the same way as the embodiment first described and the variant shown in FIG. 8.
It should be noted that, in the variant shown in FIGS. 9 to 11, the lever 24 has been omitted and it is consequently not possible to use the priming means which have been shown in FIGS. 1 to 8. Since it is desirable to be able to prime the device while its cam remains stationary, a small priming pump is disposed within the body 31, as can be seen at 1a. fig. 11. A cylindrical bore 55 is formed from the inner face of the body 31, and a piston 56 is exactly fitted in this bore.
A rod of this piston extends at 57 through the outer wall of the body 31. A spring 58 surrounds the piston rod 57 and tends to push the piston 56 out of the bore 55 and into contact with the outer surface of the piston. the casing 1. The end of the piston rod 57 which projects out of the body 31 is provided with a loop 59 serving as a handle and by means of which the piston 56 can be actuated by hand when wants to prime the injection device.
We realize that by doing. back and forth the priming piston 56, fuel is sucked through the valve 34 and this fuel is discharged into the bore 54 through the shallow recess 32 and the discharge valve 33. For the remains, the laughing range of figs. 9 to. It is identical to the positive of the fi-. 1 to 7.
It is evident that in the form of execution and in the variants described, the volumetric displacement of the piston or the diaphragm of the feed pump for each revolution of the cam is considerably greater than the total maximum volumetric displacement of all the plungers of the injection pumps. The excess fuel pumped to the injection cylinder inlets can return to the fuel tank through the fitting described.
The injection devices described are particularly compact and take up very little space. The fact that the valve body 31 is removable makes it possible to adjust or clean the valves or their seats or else the valves and their seats without it being necessary to carry out a major disassembly operation. In addition, the fuel supplied to the injection cylinders by the feed pump passes through a chamber of the described positive device which contains the plate cam and the members cooperating with this cam and which are subjected to relatively large loads, so that these parts cannot be overheated,
even when their chares pass the normal loads to which such parts are subjected in known pumps of this type.
