Machine for slitting the heads of parts having a rod, in particular screws. The object of the invention is a machine for slitting the heads of parts having a shank, in particular screws, the parts or blanks being supported by a drum and driven in front of a saw-shaped tool.
In a known machine, used for slitting screws, the blanks are engaged radially in a drum so that their heads are oriented inwardly and driven along the path of the teeth of a circular saw which is mounted eccentrically by relative to the axis of this drum. Such a machine has the disadvantage that the saw is not subjected to a uniform load because there is a gap between the adjacent blanks and that at the beginning the notches are only shallow while the depth of the slots. becomes more and more important as the blanks advance under the saw.
This irregular load on the saw is accentuated by the fact that, when a blank comes into contact with the saw, the latter only slightly cuts into the head, which subjects the saw to a powerful force, due to the hard surface layer formed on the head of the blank when this head is shaped by forging.
These irregular stresses on the saw make it necessary to rotate the latter in large Pa liers which, due to the arrangement of the machine, must generally be housed in a small space so that they can only be supported with difficulty. In addition, the saw needs to be sharpened from time to time, and its diameter decreases each time. Although the machine allows a certain adjustment to be made so that the depth of the slots remains constant; the diameter of the saw soon becomes too small, after some sharpening, for the saw to be able to be used again.
The object of the invention is to create a machine which does not have these drawbacks. Its object is a machine for slitting the head of parts having a shank, not a screw, and is characterized in that it comprises a rotating drum having notches intended to receive these parts, 'means for introducing these parts. at the rate of one per notch and successively in said notches, a fixed member forming a saw, mounted on the machine and arranged so as to come into contact with the heads of the parts in order to machine them during their movement with said drum, and means for preventing rotation of the parts in their notches during their machining by said saw member.
The drawing shows, by way of example, two embodiments of the machine which is the subject of the invention.

Fig. 11 is a schematic view illustrating the operation of this machine. Fig. 12 is a section taken along line 12-12 of FIG. 10.
Fig. 13 is a detail view on a larger scale.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 9, the machine which is the subject of the invention serves to split the head of the screw blanks in order to be able to introduce a screwdriver therein. This machine includes a carrier drum. 10, the periphery of which has several notches 11 intended to receive blanks. To simplify the description, the drum 10 can be considered as rotating around a vertical axis when in reality, as described below and as visible in FIGS. 3 and 6, this drum rotates around an axis inclined relative to the vertical.
The drum 10 comprises a body 12 mounted between upper bearings and. 13 to be able to rotate around a fixed shaft 14, the lower bearing 13 and the lower end of the shaft 14 being supported by a frame 15. On the body 12 is fixed a conical toothed ring 16 which meshes with a bevel gear 17 driven by a shaft 18 actuated by a motor mechanism, not shown. An annular rim 19 carries a toothed ring 21, the teeth 22 of which are oriented downwards. Drum 10 can.
thus rotate around the shaft 14 by dragging with it a carrier ring 20 in which the notches 11 are made to receive the blanks. The upper end of the central shaft 14 comprises a conical part 23 on which is fixed a disc 24 carrying a saw. It is seen in fig. 6 that the fixed disc 24 comprises a central cavity 25 in which the threaded end of the shaft 14 is engaged, the disc 24 being fixed on the shaft 14 by a nut 26 screwed onto this threaded end. As shown in fig. 2, the saw is formed of several separate teeth 27 which are fixed on a ring 28 mounted on the fixed disc 24 by screws.
In the periphery of the ring are made several axial grooves in which are housed the teeth 27 which are held in place by plates 29 fixed by screws on the ring 28. The drawing clearly shows that the carrier drum 10 and the fixed disc 24 are arranged such that the saw teeth lie above the axes of the blanks, so that diametral slots are cut in the heads of the blanks as the latter pass under the saw.
While forming the heads of the blanks by forging, there is a tendency to form a hard surface layer and to minimize the wear of the saw teeth 27 which come into contact with the blanks when those are - these are driven by the rotating carrier drum 10, the cutting edges of these few teeth are given a cross section in the form of V, the section of the following teeth 27 being gradually modified from this shape to < B> V until the one corresponding to the shape that we want to give, finally, to the slot, that is to say a groove at (J. In addition,
to reduce the wear of the teeth 27 of the saw and to minimize the load imposed on any particular tooth, the teeth 27 are mounted on the ring 28 in such a way that the depth of the notch increases gradually when the blanks move angularly under the saw so that the first teeth make only a shallow notch in the heads of the blanks while the final teeth form therein a groove having the desired depth. The blanks should be prevented from rotating in the notches 11 as they pass under the saw so that each tooth 27 enters the groove which has been made by the preceding teeth.
In addition, the blanks must be prevented from disengaging out of the notches 11 under the action of the saw or under the effect of centrifugal force, since the carrier drum 10 rotates at a relatively high speed. As said above, the carrier drum 10 rotates around an axis inclined relative to the vertical, this angle being of the order (25. Each notch 11, intended to receive a blank, comprises a main part 30 of substantially semi-cylindrical shape, and which extends over the entire height of the carrier ring 20 and has ribs 31 which are parallel to the axis of the drum 10.
The diameter of this part of the check mark is the same as that of the shank of the blanks. The entry 32 of each notch 11 makes an angle with the main part 30 and this angle is a little greater than that along which the axis of the carrier drum is inclined relative to the vertical; it can, for example, be 30. The width of the entry in question is a little larger than the diameter of the shank of the blanks. It can be seen from the drawings that the inclination of the inlet 32 is in the direction of rotation of the drum 10.
Fig. 9 shows that the lower end of the front face 33 of the inlet 32 and the upper end of the rear face 34 comprise parts which are extensions of the internal face of the main part 30 of the notch . This part 30 comprises, at the upper part of its rear edge, an extension 35, and at the lower part of its front edge an extension 36. These extensions are located in front of the geometric axis of the main part 30 of the notch.
It follows that if a blank is engaged, for example, in this part 30 of the notch from the top and if the rod of this blank has the same diameter as said part 30, the blank cannot be radially disengaged. out of the notch towards the front of the latter because of the extensions 35 and 36.
The blanks are introduced into the machine through an ordinary passage comprising two spaced rails 37, the heads of the blanks resting on the upper face of these rails while their rods hang between the latter. Near the drum 10, one of the rails 37 is interrupted and replaced by a rotating drum 38 wedged on a shaft 39 dragged using two bevel gears 40 and 41. The drum 38 rotates in the opposite direction and at a speed higher than the carrier drum 10. This drum 38 rotates around a vertical axis and can be seen in FIG. 1 that by rotating, the drum 38 approaches very close to the contour of the drum 10.
The blanks advance along the rails 37 while being driven until a blank presents itself in front of an empty notch 11 of the rotating drum 10. As mentioned above, the supply drum 38 rotates about a vertical axis and as the lower face of the head of the blanks rests on the upper face of this drum, their rods are vertical so that a blank can penetrate into the inlet 32 of a notch 11, each inlet 32 being substantially vertical because of the inclination .du drum 10. The blanks then occupy the position of the two blanks which are to the right of FIG. 7.
As this carrier drum continues to rotate, it approaches a little closer to the feed drum 38 than where the blank has entered the notch. Partly because of the larger approximation of drums 10 and 38 and partly because the carrier drum 10 continues to rotate, the blank is rolled and inclined in the main part 30 of the notch 11 to that it occupies the inclined position of the two blanks indicated to the left of FIG. 7 for which it is located behind the extensions 35 and 36. The blanks are thus prevented from flying out of the notches under the effect of centrifugal force.
To help the blanks to come to occupy their proper position in the branched part of the notches 30 and to be certain that all the blanks are tight against the bottom of the notches, a shoe 42, biased by a spring, is mounted on the fixed disc 24 between the drum 38 and the start of the saw. This shoe 42 is articulated to a boss 43 integral with the disc 24 and a spring 44 is interposed between the upper face of the shoe 42 and a tab 45 also fixed to this disc 24.
To prevent the elements of the saw from being damaged by a blank having a too large or deformed head, when the latter passes under the saw, this shoe 42 may include an electrical contact and when the shoe 42 is raised above its normal position, contact is made to supply a solenoid with the aid of which a brake stops the rotation of the carrier drum.
If desired, a pressure plate can be established around the contour of the part of the carrier drum between the drum 38 and the start of the saw, which prevents the blanks from moving in their notches under the effect of centri fuge force, but the presence of this pressure plate is not absolutely necessary.
When the blanks meet the elements 27 of the saw teeth, the effect of these teeth on the heads of the blanks tends to tilt the blanks towards the rear edge of the notches 30 so that the upper part of the length of the rod of the blank, which is in the main part 30 of the notch, is clamped behind the extension 35 while the lower part of this length is clamped against the extension 36.
The saw therefore has the effect of holding the blanks more firmly in these portions of the notches. In addition, as the internal face of these parts 30 is ribbed, the rods of the blanks hook onto these internal faces, preventing any relative rotation between the blanks and the notches.
It is seen in fig. 1 that the saw extends about 180 of the contour of the carrier drum and near the end of the saw is a trimming knife 46. It is well known when a groove is sawn in a work that a burr forms at the ends of the groove and this is especially harmful for countersunk screws. The deburring knife, shown in the drawing, is formed by a wheel 46 carrying several radial cutting teeth 47, each tooth having a cutting edge 48 on each side.
The cutting rose is wedged on a central shaft 49 which is journaled in a support 50 carried by the fixed disc 24. On the lower end of the shaft 49 is wedged a toothed wheel 51 which meshes with the teeth 22, oriented towards the front. bottom, a crown 21 fixed on the carrier drum 10. When the latter rotates, the toothed wheel 51 is driven to rotate the shaft 49 and the cutting teeth 47. On the shaft 49 is also wedged a wheel pressure 52 located between the teeth 47 and the toothed wheel 51 to come into contact by friction with the rods of the blanks carried by the drum 10.
It is seen in fig. 1 that each tooth 47 successively comes into contact with neighboring blanks, so that the cutting edges 48 remove the burrs which are at the rear edge of the blank and at the leading edge of the immediately following blank. This arrangement tends to drive the two blanks in rotation, but this rotation opposes the pressure wheel 52 which is in contact with the rods of the blanks. If desired, the trimming knives 46 can be arranged such that instead of the two cutting edges of one tooth acting on two adjacent blanks, it is the neighboring edges of two successive teeth which stress the two sides of the tooth. only one blank at the same time.
This prevents any tendency for the blanks to turn in their notches by the action of the knives.
As explained above, a blank cannot be released out of a notch 30 by radial movement and to bring out the blanks, use is made of an ejector 53 mounted on an arm 54 also carried by the fixed drum 24 (FIG. 1 and 3), this ejector being able to be moved closer to and away from the carrier drum to compensate both for any wear i which may take place and to take account of blanks having different dimensions. This ejector 53 occupies a location such that it comes into contact with the lower end of the rods of the blanks which hang under the notches of the carrier drum, which inclines the blanks to bring them back to their initial position in which. they have been engaged in the notches.
As a result, the blanks are forced into the outer parts 32 of the notches 11 out of which they are expelled both by the effect of the ejector 53 and by the centrifugal force. The blanks are then collected in a suitable hopper which can feed a threading machine.
Drum 38 has a diameter slightly less than that of carrier drum 10, but this diameter can be much smaller so that feed rails 37 are extended to near drum 10. By using a drum 38 having a much smaller diameter, a more positive feed can be obtained when the drum is tilted relative to the drum, carrier 10.
The variant, shown in fig. 10 to 13, also comprises a carrier drum 60, the periphery of which also comprises axial notches 61, intended to receive the blanks. The drum 60 can rotate around a fixed vertical shaft 62 and in its face. lower is present an annular housing 63 whose outer peripheral face 64 carries teeth which mesh with a toothed wheel 65 driven by a suitable motor source. The upper face of the drum 60 carries a toothed ring 66 which will be discussed below.
The periphery of the drum 60, from the right where the blanks are engaged in the notches 61 to the point where they exit therefrom, is surrounded by a curvilinear pressure plate 67 which keeps the blanks in the notches 61 while tightening these blanks strongly against the bottom thereof, this bottom being able to be ribbed to prevent the blanks from rotating in the notches.
The upper end 68 of the shaft 62 is conical in shape and carries a support 69, held in place by a washer and a nut, this support covering, at approximately an angle of 180, the drum 60. The saw 70 which, in this embodiment is constituted by a blade, is fixed to the lower edge of this support 69 by means of a curvilinear clamping plate 71 and screws 72. The saw 70 occupies such a location. that it is above the axes of the blanks when the latter are housed in the notches 61 of the drum 60 so that a diametrical groove can be traced in the heads of the blanks, the saw gradually approaching the drum 60 from a point where the blanks first contact the saw until the point where they leave the saw.
In this way, the depth of the groove gradually increases as the blanks advance under the saw and. a uniform load thus acts on each tooth of the saw.
The blanks are introduced into the notches 61 of the carrier drum, using a feed device similar to that described above, the blanks sliding along two fixed rails 73, only one of which is shown on the drawings, and they are collected by a drum 74 which rotates at a speed greater than the carrier drum.
Like the notches 61, receiving the blanks, are axial and. as the carrier drum 60 and the drum 74 both rotate about the vertical axes, the feed is somewhat simplified compared to that described above and the pressure plate 67 is arranged such that it comes into contact with it. the shanks of the blanks as soon as they are fully engaged in the notches 61 by the drum 74 and maintains them therein until they have passed the saw and the trimming knife.
To remove the burrs which are formed at the ends of the grooves made in the heads of the blanks, a device is first introduced to rotate the blanks by 90 so that the grooves, which are first in alignment with the saw, are oriented radially with respect to the drum 60. While the latter is rotating; the blanks pass between two fixed trimming knives 75, the cutting edges of which are arranged such that when the blanks pass between these knives 75, the burrs are cut from the heads.
To rotate the blanks by 90, between the output end of the saw 70 and the trimming knives 75, a rotating drum 76 is placed which rotates about a horizontal axis and which is driven by a shaft 77 of which the inner end carries a bevel pinion 78 meshing with a toothed ring 66 mounted on the carrier drum 60. The outer end of this shaft 77 is housed in suitable bearings 79 mounted on a support 80 carried by the pressure plate 67 Several elements are distributed along the contour of this drum 76, in the form of a screwdriver, each comprising an end 81 and a rod 82 which can rotate in a radial housing provided in the drum 76.
The internal end of each rod 82 has an axial cavity (Fig. 13) in which is housed a coil spring 84, one end of which is hooked to the rod 82 while the other is connected to the drum 76. In addition, each rod 82 carries a lug or finger 85 which, when the end 81 is in its normal rest position, is in contact with a stop 86 arranged such that when the lug 85 is pressed against the stop 86, the end 81 is oriented in such a way that it can be engaged in the groove made in the head of a blank when it approaches a point which is immediately below the axis of the drum 76.
It is clearly seen in fig. 13 that when a blank approaches a point immediately below the drum 76; the end 81 of the screwdriver enters the groove made in the head of the blank. When the tip 81 and the blank pass under the axis of the drum 76; the lug 85 attached to this end 81 comes into contact with a fixed stop 87, which turns the rod 82 and the end 81 of the screwdriver by 90, thus causing the blank of 90 in its notch 61 against the action of the corresponding spring 84.
When, as a result of the movement of the blank with the carrier drum and the rotation of the drum 76, the tip 81 leaves the groove of the head of the blank, said tip 81 and the corresponding rod 82 are angularly displaced by the spring 84 until the lug 85 comes into contact with its stop 86, which returns the tip 81 to a position for which it is ready to enter the groove of another blank when the drum 76 has made a full tour. The spacing and the number of screwdriver elements and the speed of rotation of the drum 76 must correspond to the spacing of the notches 61 of the carrier drum and to the speed of rotation of the latter.
The blanks then pass between the trimming knives 75 and as the pressure plate 67 immediately ends up beyond these knives, the blanks are ejected out of the drum 60 by centrifugal force, so that the notches 61 can receive new blanks. provided by the tam bour 74:
A machine is thus obtained in which the heads of the screw blanks are closed with the aid of a stationary saw, which eliminates the complex mechanisms attached to a rotating saw and allows a lower load and more. regular action on each part of the saw so that the speed of the carrier drum can be increased compared to that of the drum attached to a rotating saw.
