Method of weaving and mechanism for carrying out this method. The present invention comprises a method of weaving on a loom of the type in which reciprocating introducers are used for the insertion of the weft coming from a fixed source of power, this method being characterized. by first pulling from the source a loop of weft thread representing a sufficient length of thread to extend across the width of the running fabric, this pulling being done by a first introducer while the free end of the weft thread is retained,
the loop of thread is then transferred to an introducer conductor which brings its free end to the opposite side of the fabric, while holding the weft thread so that it is no longer debited by the source, the displacement of the first introducer pulling the weft thread from the source being performed at a lower linear speed and over a shorter distance than for the second introducer.
The invention also comprises a mechanism for carrying out this method, this mechanism being characterized by two eccentric devices for moving the weft introducers, one of these devices having a greater stroke than the other, means rotating the eccentrics of these devices at the same angular speed. The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the mechanism which the invention comprises, - and illustrates a particular implementation of the method which also comprises the invention.
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a shuttleless loom equipped with said embodiment of the mechanism.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of one of the eccentrics included in this mechanism. Fig. 3 is a section through the vertical axis of FIG. 2.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to that of 1q, FIG. 2, but shows part of the eccentric.
Figs. 5 and 9, finally, are diagrammatic views illustrating said implementation of the method.
In fig. 1 is shown a sufficient part of the profession to give an idea of the relative arrangement of the elements of said embodiment of the mechanism according to the invention. The loom comprises a frame formed of side members 10 and 11, spacers 12 and a chest piece 13, an upper mechanism designated as a whole by 14 being carried by an arc 15 in a more or less usual manner and serving to control. harness frames such as that shown at 16 and co-operating with a harness cam mechanism (not shown).
At each end of the loom are mounted, in a housing 17 on one side and 18 on the opposite side, tape wheels, one of which is shown at 19, the housing 18 being torn off. A support device, comprising arms 20 and 21, serves to keep these housings and the tape wheel mounting devices in the proper relation with respect to the other members, so that the wheels can be printed on. tape an oscillating movement around axes such as the axis 22 re shown on the right side of the loom.
The wheel is connected, for its movement, to an eccentric mechanism 23 mounted at the end of a shaft 24 which rotates in synchronism with the other parts of the loom and which is positively controlled by an energy source, this arrangement n 'not being shown here, since it is known at the present time, an embodiment having been illustrated in Swiss patent N 287531. The movement printed by means of the eccentric mechanism 23, when the The shaft 24 rotates, is communicated, by means of a crankshaft 25, to a pinion 26 wedged on a shaft 27, and by the latter to the wheel 19 by means of angle gears 28 and 29 .
The same general arrangement is found on each side of the loom, although the eccentric mechanism differs, as will be described below. Tapes 19 are attached to the tape wheels, one of which is shown at 30 and the other at 31. The tape 30 carries a head or weft introducer 32; this head is organized to engage and to project in a crowd of <B> dut </B> fabric a weft thread loop, the free end of which is held by a retainer, the weft thread being actually pulled from from a power source S at the same time.
On the free end of the other tape 31 is fixed a weft intro ductor 33 which is organized in the manner shown in the patent cited above to receive the weft thread coming from the first tape when it engages in the execution. a transfer function at a point close to the middle of the loom, or close to the midpoint of the fabric being executed; then, after releasing the free end of the weft thread, he pulls said end to the opposite edge of the fabric in a way that any technician familiar with the operation of looms of this type will easily understand.
In actual operation, the transfer function is performed at a point somewhat offset from the middle of the running tissue, as seen in fig. 1, the median line of the fabric being indicated in said figure and. the transfer point being shown shifted, as has just been decreased, since the weft introducer 33 meets and receives the weft thread from the weft introducer 32 when each of them has moved d 'a very small amount from the position it occupies in said figure.
The actual degree of offset of this transfer point. may vary for different widths of fabric running and for different conditions, but, in general, the degree of offset is such as to give the actual distance per run by the tape 30 and. the introduction of weft 32 a value very significantly lower than that of the distance traveled by the opposite ribbon and by its weft introducer.
If the eccentrics 23 and 34 and the gear mechanism interposed between these eccentrics and the wheels were exactly the same, the movement of each wheel and of each band would be the same, in the sense that it would be on the same distance and at the same linear speed, in case the band wheels had the same diameter. In order to achieve a lower linear speed and a smaller displacement for the tape 30 and for its weft feeder 32, a smaller stroke is provided for the eccentric 23 than for the eccentric 34.
Although one can conceive that it is possible to modify the transmission to obtain the same general result, or that different dimensions could be used for the tape wheels, these latter solutions would result in a greater complication and less normalization of the mechanism on each side. A certain degree of adjustment is possible for the positioning of the wheels with respect to each other and also for the relative position of the bands and their heads 32 and 33.
If we now refer to fig. 2, 3 and 4, it can be seen that the eccentric comprises a circular grooved rim 35 mounted at the ends of a number of spokes (although these can be replaced by a solid veil) and a means 36 disposed eccentrically. relative to the center of the rim.
It is desirable that the eccentric can be angularly adjusted by a small amount; for this purpose, the rim and the hub of FIG. 3, although they are mounted on the shaft 24, are fixed to a sector 37 which extends radially from a second hub 38, the latter being. attached to the shaft 24 to transmit its driving movement to the eccentric itself.
The connection between the eccentric and the sector 37 is shown in FIG. 2; it includes locking bolts 39 and 40 not sant in elongated openings of one of the members (the sector preferably) and adjustment screws at 41 and 42 to produce the angular displacement of the members and to keep them in this position when they are blocked by screws or bolts 39 and 40. A pulley 43, formed of two parts fixed to one another, is mounted so as to be able to turn, on the eccentric rim 35, and the arm to the end of which the rack 25 is mounted is screwed into a threaded hole 44 of this pulley or fixed to it in any other way.
The description just given of an eccentric applies to both, the only difference being that the eccentricity of the hub 36 relative to the rim 35 is less for one of the eccentrics than for the other. It is also correct that the eccentricity of the hub 38 with respect to the slots of the sector 37 varies by a corresponding amount.
It will be appreciated that it is possible to use cranks instead of the eccentrics shown and described here and that these cranks can have a different eccentricity; one can also conceive of a standardized crank device in which one could vary the eccentricity of the crank knob with respect to the axis of rotation, such as the shaft 24, to obtain any reasonable degree that d eccentricity and thereby any reasonable change in the relative speeds and oscillation angles of the tape wheels 19.
We will now describe, with reference to FIGS. 5 to 9, an implementation of the method that comprises the invention, by means of said embodiment of the mechanism. A weft thread is introduced forming a loop or hairpin, it being understood that this weft thread is preferably introduced automatically during the formation of the fabric to constitute a selvage on one side thereof, although it may be necessary to form a selvage on the opposite side by any of the various well known additional mechanisms which may be applied in the art.
In some cases, the loom may operate to introduce single weft yarns not connected to other weft yarns, and in this case the actual operation corresponds to that described in connection with Figs. 5 to 8, the cycle of these figures repeating at each successive change of crowd.
In fig. 5, the weft thread from the. power source S passes through a binding or clamping element 45 and is hand held by a second clamping element 46, it being understood that the weft yarn is forced to pass forward from or into this position. ci to be engaged in the fork-shaped portion of the weft introducer 32.
The weft introducer 32 is shown at the starting point from which it performs its weft yarn drive movement and, since the end of the weft thread is held by the clamping member 46, the whole weft thread drawn must come from the power source S. In fig. 6, the lead 32 has been moved inward and toward the middle of the running fabric, the end edges of which are shown here. The opposing introducer member 33 has also moved inward.
It will be noted that the same time has elapsed for the displacement of each of the introducers by firing from its initial position to that of FIG. 6, but that introducer 32 has not been moved as far as introducer 33.
Its linear speed is smaller; in fact, actual practice shows that its speed should be approximately on the order of 12 to 15% of the speed at which it would move if the two eccentric mechanisms had the same eccentricity. Since a loop of weft thread is pulled at this time, that is, a sufficient amount of thread has been pulled to pass the full width of the fabric when the end is released. 46 and is pulled to the other side by the introducer 33,
as shown in FIGS. '. and 8, the speed of pulling from the feed cone tends to become nearly double that which would normally be required in an ordinary loom if it were assumed that these two looms were operated by weaving the same number of picks per minute. However, the result of this implementation of the method and use of the mechanism described herein is that the speed at which the weft yarn is drawn from the power source S is correspondingly lower. than it would be otherwise.
As seen in fig. 7, the introducer 32 operates to only pull the weft yarn from the power source as long as is necessary for the flow of a sufficient amount of yarn so that when the end is released and drawn to the opposite side of the fabric, there is a length sufficient to go a small distance beyond said side for the formation of a selvage by twisting additional threads around these protruding ends,
or some other way. The point at which the transfer takes place, and the location of the weft movement members on the sides of the fabric is such that a sufficient amount of jute yarn is drawn for a shed to be drawn, after which the release of the end takes place and the transfer. This practice maintains tension until the point of engagement of the hook-shaped portion of the introducer 33 with the weft when the weft is presented by the first introducer 32. Almost at the same time, the pulling of the yarn. weft is prevented from the power source, since the clamp 45 is. closed.
The adjustment of these mechanisms is preferably such that the opening of the clamping device 46 precedes by a very small amount the closing of the clamping device 45.
If the weaving involves the insertion of unrelated picks, the <I> cycle </I> just described is repeated with each change. crowd, but it is better to weave picks tied together or in a hairpin. The weft thread is engaged again and the weft feeder 32 moves inwardly at this time, driving the weft thread not only from the power source S, but also from a loop of excess material which tends to form in the vicinity of the edge of the fabric when the weft thread is slackened from certain hand elements, all as described in the patent mentioned above.
The slower movement of the introducer during this second phase of the cycle provides two distinct advantages in addition to the generally slower withdrawal, namely: first the slower movement when the wire is initially engaged. as is the case for the first pick; in the second place, the slower movement of the organs and the less sudden action when the slack is caught up in the loop of which we have just spoken.
This obviates, at least to a significant extent, the tendency which the mechanism may have at times, and with certain relatively weak weft threads, to break the thread when it is suddenly taut. In this second pick, the transfer is performed as in the first; the weft thread is cut and released so as to leave enough material to pass through the fabric when the pick is completed, the cut end then remaining held in the clamping device 46 which, although it is not not shown here in this form, is, in fact, a combined cutting and holding device. The above mentioned patent gives a complete description of this device.
The mechanism described is applicable to all types of shuttleless looms in which (the introducers (or needles) insert the weft in the desired manner. Although in the description given here the aforementioned introducers are at the ends of flexible members, of course, it is possible to provide embodiments in which the weft introducers are not flexible.
