Method for the initiation and adjustment of an electric arc and apparatus for carrying out this method. The present invention comprises a method for supplying and regulating an electric arc, and an apparatus for carrying out this method.
This device finds its application more particularly to a soldering unit or to a cinema projector, by reconciling the requirements of a strongly hypocompound characteristic (necessary for the stabilization of the arc) and the limitation of the short-circuit current. circuit, with those of a high power factor (allowing a reduction in size and better use of the mains).
This result is obtained without having recourse to capacitors, as in the case of a transformer or a static rectifier, or to complex systems of windings, anti-co @ mpound excitation, of third ba lai, etc., as in the case of a rotary generator.
The device of the capacitors, in addition to being expensive, indeed presents the drawback of being truly effective only if the device to which it is added operates under a well-defined voltage, which is not the case. for supplying arcs, especially welding arcs, which cause sudden bursts of current. On the other hand, the artifice of the multiple excitation coils and additional brushes leads to the construction of very special generators, also quite expensive.
The present invention comprises a process for the initiation and adjustment of an electric arc, characterized in that, before the initiation of the arc, an additional electromotive force is produced which is added to an electromotive force. supply, the voltage between the electrodes of the arc, before the initiation of the latter, depending on the sum of these two electromotive forces, while after the initiation of the arc one introduces, in the circuit where said supply electro-motive force is applied a variable reactance which,
low as long as the current in the arc and the voltage at its terminals are normal, increases rapidly when this intensity increases and this voltage decreases.
The invention also comprises an -appa reil for implementing the method. charac terized in that it comprises a device which, before the arc striking, functions as a no-load transformer, while after the ignition it functions as a premagnetizing self-inductance coil, in that this device comprises for each phase at least one main alternating current winding constantly in service, an auxiliary alternating current excitation winding in service before starting and one in direct current premagnetization bearing in service when the arc is - initiated and in which Your other windings,
do not involve any electromotive force and in that means. are designed to make this device not ser from operation as a vacuum transformer to operation as a premagnetization inductance coil, this passage taking place when the arc is struck.
By the fact that, under load, this apparatus presents a variable apparent reactance X, this reactance being weak in normal conditions (when the arc works under 25 to 3'0 volts approximately) and increasing rapidly as the voltage of the arc decreases to reach its maximum in short-circuit when the electrodes come into contact, thus obtaining a satisfactory limitation of the short-circuit current,
the value of the power factor being low only in the vicinity of the short-circuit.
We also obtain a very good stabilization of the arc, because the voltage drop XI due to the passage of the current I through the reactance X is the product of two factors X and I - which are both increasing functions of I. The voltage drop therefore increases much faster than -if X were constant.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, several embodiments of the apparatus allowing the implementation of the method according to the invention.
Fig. 1 shows the general arrangement of the magnetic circuit and of the windings of a first embodiment for single-phase current.
Fig. 2 represents the complete diagram of an arc welding station supplied with alternating current by a single phase transformer.
Fig. 3 represents the general arrangement of. magnetic circuit and the winding of a second embodiment for three-phase current.
Fig. 4 shows the complete diagram of an arc welding station supplied with direct current by a rectifier itself supplied with three-phase current. Fig. 5 shows the complete diagram of an arc welding station supplied with direct current by a rotary generator; in: this embodiment, the apparatus described is no longer used, this time, for the -direct control of the flow in the arc, but for its indirect control by acting on the excitation circuit -of the , generator.
Fig. 6 shows a diagram of an embodiment avoiding the use of contactors or relays.
In, the explanations which follow, it is understood that the magnetic circuit of the apparatus described and its windings with native alternating current and of premagnetization are arranged so as to satisfy the essential condition of any self-inductance with winding -de pre-magnetization, namely that the native alternating current passing through the main winding induces a resulting electromotive force (at the fundamental frequency) of zero in the coils constituting the winding in the premagnetization. This is the reason why we adopted,
in the schematic representations of the figures accompanying the text, a convention according to which the axis of the pre-magnetization windings is always perpendicular to that of the windings traversed by alternating current.
On the fg ,. 1 shows a magnetic circuit, the central core 1 of which has a cross section double that of the lateral cores 2 and 3. In reality, this circuit can be constituted by two identical magnetic circuits aceolàs one to the other ide part and the other of a gap 4 (the latter intended to force the saturation field to pass through the two halves, of the central core,
instead of being closed by the lateral cores and the yokes, which would reduce the efficiency of the saturation). This magnetic circuit comprises a main alternating current winding 5, an auxiliary alternating current excitation winding 6 and an auxiliary premagnetization winding through which continuous current passes and composed of two windings 7 and 8 connected in series.
If the winding 6 is energized, while the windings 7 and 8 are not, the apparatus behaves like a simple transformer of which the winding 6 would be the primary and the winding 5 the secondary. As in this case, the device only works when empty, that is to say without any current in. 5, it follows that 6 can be executed in a very fine wire, with a section just sufficient to allow the magnetizing current to pass.
When the windings 7 and 8 are supplied while the winding 6 is not, the device behaves like a self-inductance with premagnetization, the winding 5 can be traversed by a strong current without inducing antagonistic ampere-turns in the bearing 6, nor without inducing an electro-motive force at the fundamental frequency in the coils 7 and 8. The device can then operate according to one of the three following operating modes: 1.
As the DC voltage applied to the pre-magnetization bearing remains constant, the AC current in the main winding is variable. In this cm, the apparent reactance of the device remains low as long as the alternating current remains below a certain well-determined value (which depends on the constant direct voltage applied to the winding pre-magnetization). When the alternating current exceeds this value, the reactance begins to increase rapidly.
2. Since the alternating current flowing through the main winding remains constant, the direct current in the pre-magnetizing winding is variable. In that case,
the apparent reactance of the device remains low as long as the pre-magnetization current remains above a certain well-determined value (which depends on the constant alternating voltage applied to the pi: ncipal alternating winding). When the continuous premagmetization current becomes less than this value, the reactance begins to increase rapidly.
3. The alternating current in the main winding and. the direct current in the pre-magnetization winding varies in the opposite direction. When the ratio of the alternating ampere-turns of the main winding to the continuous ampere-turns of the premagnetizing winding remains below a certain value, the apparent reactance remains low. When this ratio exceeds this value, the apparent reactance begins to increase rapidly.
In fig. 2- is shown the diagram. complete with an arc welding station supplied with single-phase alternating current. The primary winding of a main transformer 9 is supplied by a network, with native alternating current, the secondary winding, connected in series with the main alternating current winding 11 of the device 10, supplies electrodes 1- 4 and 15 of the welding p .ste.
The auxiliary excitation bearing 12 of the device 1.0 is connected to the network by means of a switch l6 and a rest contact 19 of a relay 1.8. The premature auxiliary winding,
gmiétisatiou 13 of said device is supplied by an auxiliary @redlresseur 221 -whose primary winding. is connected to the network by means of a switch 17 and the working contact 20 of relay 18. The engagement coil of relay 18, connected in series with the primary winding of transformer 9, is switched on as soon as the latter begins to deliver, that is to say as soon as the arc is struck.
The electromotive force induced at no load in the secondary winding of the transformer is slightly greater than the voltage on load at the terminals of the arc (ie approximately 30 to 35 volts). On the other hand, when the auxiliary excitation winding 12 is energized, the main winding 11 develops an additional voltage such as the sum of the voltages developed in the secondary winding of the transformer 9 and in the main winding. - cipial 11 of device 10 is equal to the arc ignition voltage (approximately 60 volts).
Under these conditions, the operation is as follows: when the electrodes 14 and 15 are moved away and the transformer operates without load, the coil of relay 18 is not energized, the rest contact 19 is closed and the working contact 20 is open. It follows that the winding 12 is energized, while the auxiliary rectifier 21 is not. An additional voltage appears at the terminals of the main winding 11 and between the electrodes \ 14 and 15 a voltage corresponding to the starting voltage of the arc.
As soon as one puts these electrodes in contact, the arc starts, a current flows through the secondary rolling of the transformer 9 and the main winding 11, the coil of the relay 18 is energized, the contact of rest 19 opens, while the work contact 20 closes, the auxiliary winding 12 ceases to be supplied, while the rectifier 21 is energized and supplies the auxiliary pre-magnetization winding 13, the apparatus 10 then operates as a pre-magnetization self-inductor according to operating mode 1, the direct voltage applied to the pre-magnetization circuit remaining constant.
This is adjusted so that when the flow rate in the arc tends to exceed the working current corresponding to the electrodes chosen, the apparent reactance of the apparatus 10 ceases to remain low and increases rapidly and attains a maximum value, when the arc electrodes come into contact, such that the short-circuit current is limited to a determined value which is only about 20% higher than the working current in practice).
Another embodiment of the apparatus described applying to three-phase current operation is shown in FIG. 3. The magnetic circuit has a core with five columns, the section of each of the two lateral columns 22 and 23 being 1.5 times greater than that of the three central columns 24, 25 and 26. The main winding comprises three windings - one per phase - 27, 28 and 29 respectively mounted on columns 24, 25, 26. The auxiliary excitation winding also has three windings - one per phase - 30, 31 and 32, star-shaped for example respectively on the columns 24, 2a and 26. The auxiliary premagnetization winding divided into two coils 33, 34 is distributed respectively on the side columns 22 and 23.
At a given moment, the alternating flow of one of the three central columns closes while passing through the other two. At no time does the alternating flow therefore pass through the premagnetization coils. The continuous flow produced by the coil 33 in the column 22 is closed in the proportion of two thirds by the column 24 and in the pro portion of the third by the column 25. Likewise the flow produced in the column 23 by the coil 34 is closed in the proportion of two thirds by column 26 and one third by column 25.
The continuous pre-magnetization field is therefore substantially the same in each of the central columns. Such a device operating with three-phase current is shown at 36 in FIG. 4, which is the general diagram of a welding installation in which the arc is supplied with direct current by a rectifier which is itself supplied with three-phase current via this device 36.
The installation described comprises a three-phase supply transformer 35, a group of rectifying elements 37, electrodes 38 and 39 supplied with direct current. The apparatus 36 includes the main winding 40, the auxiliary excitation winding 41, and the auxiliary pre-magnetization winding 42.
As there is a direct current at the terminals of the rectifier elements 37, it becomes unnecessary to call, as was the case in the example of FIG. 2, to an auxiliary rectifier and the premature winding 42 mounted in series with an adjustment rheostat 43 and connected directly to the terminals of the main rectifier 37. The operation is as follows: no-load, when the arc is not started, no current flows through shunt 44, so that relay 45 is not energized and remains closed.
The excitation coil 46 of a three-pole contactor comprising two work contacts 47 and 48 and a break contact 49 is therefore supplied, which causes 1 ,, - # energized. of the excitation winding 41, and the opening of the circuit supplying the auxiliary pre-magnetization winding 42.
An additional voltage is therefore produced in the main windings 40 in addition to that of the secondary winding of the transformer 35, the value of this additional voltage is such that the sum of these two alternating voltages corresponds to a direct voltage. between electrodes 38 and 39 equal to the starting voltage. As soon as the arc is struck, a current passes through the shunt 44 which supplies the relay 45, which cuts off the power supply to the coil 46, thus causing the opening of the contacts 47 and 48 and the closing of the contact 49.
The electromotive force acting in the main circuit is therefore reduced to that which is induced in the secondary winding of transformer 35; the winding 41 being no longer under voltage and the winding 42 being powered, the device 36 then plays the role of a pre-magnetization self-inductance operating as follows. the procedure 3 described above. In fact, the pre-magnetization rolling 42 is then traversed by a decreasing current, while the main winding 41 is traversed by a current which increases when the voltage across the arc decreases.
The pre-magnetization current is regulated by the rheostat 43 so that the apparent reactance of the apparatus 36, low when the arc delivers the normal working current under load, increases rapidly as soon as this current in the arc passes. from its normal value to the value corresponding to the short-circuit, the pre-magnetization current then passing from its normal value to zero. The starting voltage is adjusted by means of a three-pole switch 50 connected to the taps of winding 41.
The flow rate in the arc is adjusted by means of a three-pole switch 51 connected to taps on the primary winding of 35 and making it possible to modify the secondary voltage of the transformer 35.
Fig. 5 gives the general diagram of a welding unit using a rotary generator and equipped with a device similar to that of FIG. 2; instead of using the device for the direct supply of the arc, it is applied to the supply of a rectifier which itself supplies the excitation winding of the generator.
As the current in the circuit of use of a generator at constant speed varies in the same direction as the current in its excitation winding, it is clear that it will suffice to obtain, in the rolling of excitation of the generator, a law of variation of the current as a function of the voltage at the terminals of the arc analogous - to that which one wishes to obtain for the flow in the arc itself, in order to achieve a functioning system, with the strongly hypocompound characteristic desired in order to ensure the stability of the arc and the. short-circuit current limitation.
The generator 52 has a separate excitation winding 53 supplied by the rectifier 54, which is itself supplied from the assembly constituted by a transformer 55 and by the apparatus 56. These two members are connected as shown in fig. 5. The three windings of the apparatus 56, main winding, auxiliary excitation winding, in auxiliary pre-magnetization bearing, are represented respectively at 57, 58 and 59.
The operation is as follows: off-load, when the electrodes 60 and 61 are separated, no current flowing through the shunt 62, the relay 63 is not energized 'and the coil 64 of a contactor comprising a working contact. vail 65 - and a normally closed contact 66 is energized. As a result, winding 58 is energized, while the circuit supplying winding 59 is cut. An additional voltage is induced in the rolling 57 and has a value such that the rectifier 54 develops across the terminals of the rolling 53 an excitation voltage corresponding to the starting voltage between the electrodes 60 and 61.
As soon as the arc is started, a current flows through the shunt 62, the relay 63 is energized, the coil 64 is cut, thus causing the. switching off the winding 58 and switching on the winding 59, the power of which is taken directly from the terminals of the generator 52. The rectifier 54 is then supplied only under a voltage reduced to the secondary voltage of transformer 55, resulting in a reduction in the electromotive force of the generator.
On the other hand, the device 56 behaves like a simple self-inductor with premagnetization operating according to the operating mode 2, described above, because the pre-magnetization current decreases rapidly when the current in the arc passes from its normal value. to its short-circuit value, because the premagnetization winding is supplied with a voltage which goes from the normal value of the arc voltage to zero.
The ignition voltage is adjusted by means of a switch 67 acting on the taps of the winding 58, while the flow rate in the arc is adjusted by means of a switch 68 connected to the taps of the primary winding of the transformer 55.
Fig. 6 shows an accessory device intended to make one or other of the systems described above completely static by removing the relays and contactors.
It comprises two pre-magnetizing self-inductors 69 and 70 , the alternating current windings of which are in series, the assembly being supplied by the network. The control current is supplied to terminals 71.
The device operates as follows: when .no current is supplied through terminals 71 in the premagnetization winding of self-inductance 69, the voltage across the winding of this self-inductance which supplies a rectifier 72 (which circulates a pre-magnetization current in the self-inductance 70)
is much higher than when a current is brought through these terminals. This inductance 70 then being saturated, the voltage across the self-inductance 69 is equal to the network voltage minus the low residual voltage which remains across the self-inductance 70. It follows that the voltage appearing at the terminals 73 is zero, while the voltage appearing at terminals 74 is approximately equal to the voltage of the network.
In fact, there are provided on an auxiliary self-inductance 75 taps 76, 77 such that the voltage between 76, 78, on the one hand, 77, 79, on the other hand, is substantially equal to the residual voltage of coil 69 or coil 70. If, on the contrary, a sufficient current arrives via terminals 71 to saturate the core of the self-inductance 69, the pre-magnetization bearing of the self-inductance 70 is no longer supplied and the operating conditions are reversed: almost all of the network voltage is supported by the self-inductance 70 (except for the residual voltage of 69), so that the.
almost all of the network voltage appears between terminals 78, while zero voltage appears between terminals 74. It would therefore suffice to connect, for example, the auxiliary excitation coil and the rectifier supplying the 'auxiliary pre-magnetization winding respectively at terminals 74 and 76 and to pass through terminals 71 a fraction of the current supplying the arc to operate the device of FIG. 2 by removing the relay.
