Pour obvier à cet inconvénient, on a ima giné des dispositifs permettant de profiler la meule avec des flancs convexes, de telle façon qu'elle produise des filetages à flancs recti- lignes. Ces dispositifs reposent sur un principe consistant < Ï, faire décrire au diamant qui taille la meule Lui mouvement combiné composé, d'une part, d'un déplacement rectiligne selon les gé- néra.triees de l'hélicoïde, mouvement exécuté dans une infinii;
An apparatus for profiling a grinding wheel, more particularly a grinding wheel intended to grind the threads of screws at large pitch. The object of the present invention is an apparatus for profiling a grinding wheel, more particularly a grinding wheel intended to grind large screw threads. not,.
This device is characterized by a shaft mounted in its bearings so as to be able to rotate about its axis and slide along it, the latter being intended to occupy with respect to the grinding wheel the same relative position as the axis of the workpiece, by a diamond carried by the shaft and mounted so as to be able to slide parallel to the sides of this wheel, by a support plane arranged transversely to the axis of the shaft, by a maneuver making it possible to adjust the inclination of this plane relative to said axis, by a stop device pressed between the plane and the shaft by means of a spring,
and by a movement transmission mechanism connecting the stop device to the shaft and such that, when the latter rotates, the device moves along the slope of the bearing plane, the whole so that, when the shaft and the diamond are actuated, the latter describing a portion of the helicoid corresponding to the part of the screw pitch to be rectified coming into contact with the grinding wheel, the pitch of this helicoid being determined by the inclination of the support plane.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the object of the present invention.
Fig. 1 is a plan view thereof, the embodiment being mounted on the table of a machine for grinding the screw threads by grinding. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section passing through the X-X axis of the embodiment and through the center of the grinding wheel. Fig. 3 is a cross section through III-III and FIG. 4 a cross section through IV-IV of fig. 2. FIG. 5 is a longitudinal section through V -V of FIG. 2, and fig. 6 is a cross section through VI-VI of FIG. 5.
Fig. 7 is a reproduction, on a larger scale, of part of FIG. 2.
In fig. 1, 81 is: the sliding table of the grinding machine, which can move in a straight line in front of the grinding wheel 1. This table carries the fixed headstock 82 and the tailstock 83 between the points of which is placed the part 84 to be ground by grinding. Following the tailstock 83 is fixed on the table by its frame 77 the profiling apparatus shown in more detail in FIGS. 2 to 6.
When the screw pitch of the part 84 is rectified, the table is in a position such that this part is opposite the grinding wheel; this part 84 then turns on itself, while the table moves in front of the grinding wheel, which also turns on itself. When we want to profile the grinding wheel, the table 81 is moved until it comes into contact with the fixed stop 85; in this position, the diamond 2 of the profiling device is: engaged with the grinding wheel to cut the latter; the X-X axis of the profiling device, an axis which is in the extension of that of the part 84, then occupies, with respect to this grinding wheel, the same position as before the axis of the part 84.
In fig. 2 to 6, 1 is the. grindstone and 2 the dia mant; the latter is mounted on a diamond holder 3 fixed in a head 4 pinned to the end of a movable slide 5. This bucket slide is of circular section except in the. region between its shoulders 6 and 7. It is cut between the shoulder 6 and the shoulder 7 so as to present a rack 8 which meshes with a pinion 9 whose axis 10 coincides with that of the pivot 11 of the swivel turret 12, la. rotation of this turret making it possible to adjust to the desired value at the angle between the median plane of the grinding wheel and the trajectory of the diamond.
The slide 5 is guided on the side of the dia mant by the bearing 13 and at the rear by the shoulders 6 and 7. A protective cap 14 of the. head 4 prevents emery dust from entering the bearing 13. The shoulder 7 has a notch 15 in which engages a prismatic guide 16 integral with a plug 17 which closes the housing of the slide towards the back. The guide 16 prevents the slide from turning on itself.
The pivoting turret 12, after having been adjusted to the desired angle by means of a di vision not shown and made at its periphery, can be immobilized by a tightening screw 18 actuated by the lever 19. The shaft 10 is provided with a lever 20, respectively 20 ', at each of its ends, so that one of them remains accessible in any position of the turret 12. The latter rotates by its pivot 1.1 in a bearing 21 a shaft 22 rotatably mounted in a support 23.
The shaft 22 carries at the rear a head 24 provided with a spring needle 25 which can engage in one or the other of the two housings 26 arranged 180 from each other. If the shaft 22 is rotated half a turn, with all the parts it carries, the slide 5 will take a position symmetrical to that shown and in which the diamond will sharpen without any new adjustment. angle the other side of the grinding wheel.
The support 23 can slide in a dovetail slide 27 (FIG. 5) made in an arm 28; the position of the support 23 along the arm 28 is adjustable using a screw 29 according to the diameter of the helicoid to be ground. A sheet metal casing 30 integral with the support 23 protects the dovetail against fouling.
The arm 28 is screwed onto the end of a shaft 31 which can slide and rotate in bearings 32 and 33, being constantly pressed from left to right by a coil spring 34 based, on the one hand, on a ball stop 35 and, on the other hand, on a nut 36; the bearings 32 and 33 are fixed to the frame 77 and the X-X axis of the shaft 31 is. the same as that X-X of fig. 1.
The shaft 31 carries at its internal end a toothing 37 meshing with a pin 38 capable of rotating around a shaft 39 embedded, on the one hand, in the part 40 fixed to the frame and, on the other hand, in a ring 41. 1 screwed onto part 40. Part 40 is crossed right through by a wide opening 42 which does not leave any left to the left, in fig. 1, that of the projections 43, 44 and 45 (see also fig. 4) which are joined at their end by the ring s 41. The pinion 38 meshes with a rack 46 formed in a slide 47 which moves in two slides 48 and 48 'made in the projections 43, 44 and 45.
The slide 47 is guided in these slides 48 and 48 'by its heels 49 and 50 as well as 51 and 52.
The slide 47 carries (fig. 2, 4 and 5) two forks 53-54 and 55-56 in which slide two nuts 57 carrying the ends of a shaft 58 whose axis is perpendicular to that of the shaft 31. This arrangement allows the shaft 58 to move away from or to approach the slide 47 under the action of the inclined plane 59 and 59 'on which bear the bearings 60 and 60' mounted on the shaft 58 The latter carries, in its middle part, a bearing 61 bearing. Against the rectangular head 62 of a pivot 63 housed in the shaft 31.
The thrust of the spring 34 thus passes through the chain of the following parts: nut 36, shaft 31, pivot 63, its head 62, shaft 58, bearing 61, bearings 60 and 60 'and is referred to the inclined plane 59 and 59' which is practiced in a part 64 pivoting on the journals 65 and 65 'embedded in the part 40.
The part 64 can form an adjustable angle with the axis of the shaft 31, because it also has rearwardly a fork 66 and 66 'which embraces a thimble 67 pivoted on a shaft 68 secured to a slide. 69 moving in a rectangular slide 70 cents. the action of an adjustment screw 71 which is provided with a head 72 with graduation.
On an annular bearing 75 of the frame 77 can rotate the ring 74 through which the screw 73 whose upper end carries a control head 76 and, the lower end 76 'of which rests on a stop surface 77' of the frame. 77. The ring 74 carries an arm 80 serving as a bearing for a roller 79 on which rests a rib 28 'of the arm 28; this rib is kept constantly in contact with the roller by the weight of the arm 28.
By screwing or unscrewing, in the ring 74, the screw 73, the lower end of which still rests on the frame, this ring 74 is rotated around the axis X-X of the shaft 31 and; consequently, the arm 28, resting on it, and the shaft 31 fixed to this arm. This rotational movement is communicated via the gear 37, the pinion 38 and the rack 46, a slide 47 which moves in its .glis sière perpendicular to the axis of the ar bre 31.
This transverse movement is communicated by the forks 53-54 and 55-56 to the shaft 58 which then moves parallel to the inclination of the inclined plane 59 and 59 '.
If this inclined plane is perpendicular to the axis of the shaft 31, as indicated in FIG. 1, it will itself be parallel to the end of the rectangular head 62 and the transverse displacement of the axis 58 will remain without influence on the axial position of the shaft 31.
If, on the other hand, as indicated in fig. 5, the inclined plane makes for example an angle of 45 with the axis of the shaft 31, the head 62 constantly bearing on the bearing 61, the bearings 60 and 60 'constantly bearing on the inclined plane 59 and 59', the head 62 will undergo an axial displacement equal to the amplitude of the transverse displacement @de the shaft 58.
The axial displacement of the head 62 communicating to the shaft 31, it can be seen that this shaft will rotate and slide simultaneously; so as to describe, as well as the arm 28 and the parts which it carries, a helical path whose pitch will be equal to the development of the gear 37 multiplied by the tangent of the angle b formed between the axis of the part 31 and the axis of the fork 66 and 66 '. The value of this tangent is directly measurable by a graduation made on the divided head 72. And on the rule 78.
It is thus possible, by a suitable adjustment of @la, value, tangent b, read directly from the aforementioned members, to cause the shaft 31 and, consequently, the diamond 32, to execute a helical trajectory of predetermined pitch, the value of which. will always be equal to the pitch of the helicoid to be ground.
The use of the device will be as follows: - Having set the angle a to the appropriate value for the part to be ground and the angle b in accordance with the pitch of the part to be ground, the arm 28 being in a horizontal position , we will act on one of the levers 20 and \? 0 'which controls the movement of the diamond along the side of the grinding wheel, printing at. this diamond a reciprocating movement which cuts a generator of the side of the grinding wheel then, acting. on the screw 73, we will place the arm 2 8 in a position slightly oblique with respect to the hori zontal while one continues to act on the diamond.
Continuing in this way step by step, the point of the diamond will be explored through the envelope surface of the helicoid to be grinded until the moment when the diamond will no longer touch the grinding wheel. At that time, we'll do. turn the pivot 22 by a half turn on itself to present the diamond on the opposite side of the. grinding wheel that will be cut by the same process. During these operations, the grinding wheel turns, of course, at high speed.
This device therefore makes it possible to cut a grinding wheel for very rapid steps by having the diamond which cuts the grinding wheel explore the envelope surface of the helicoid to be grinded and - by producing this helical movement by the action of the device, the table of the grinding machine being stopped at this time.
The above-described profiling apparatus has great advantages especially for profiling in a practical manner a grinding wheel intended for grinding threads at very rapid pitches and which, therefore, must be strongly inclined to conform to a large pitch coil. It is known that when the sides of the. grinding wheel which must grind a thread at large pitch are cut with rectilinear generators, so as to form a cone of revolution, they will not produce. not on the piece to be worked Him, helicoid with rectilinear generatrices, but with convex generatrices.
This is the inevitable result of the fact that the two flanks of the grinding wheel inclined at the ramp angle of the thread do not touch its flanks in a single plane passing through the axis of the thread, but touch them on both sides. the other of a mean plane containing the axis of the thread and the center of the grinding wheel.
To overcome this drawback, devices have been devised for profiling the grinding wheel with convex flanks, so that it produces threads with straight flanks. These devices are based on a principle consisting in having the diamond which cuts the grinding wheel describe a combined movement composed, on the one hand, of a rectilinear movement according to the genera.triees of the helicoid, movement executed in an infinite ;
é of planes embracing the contact zone of the grinding wheel and the workpiece, the trajectory of the diamond forming with the axis of the latter the angle which corresponds to the profile generating the thread and, on the other hand, d 'a helical trajectory having the pitch of the thread to be grinded, executed around its axis. The cutting edge of the diamond explores, by this process, the side of the helicoid at. grinding and the grinding wheel thus takes on a profile which matches the helicoid explored by the diamond, it will consequently grind the part to be worked with a net with rectilinear generators.
But this principle has generally been achieved in the form of a profiling device constituted by an oscillating support which is placed between the points of the grinding machine and which is coupled to its spindle. This support carries a diamond mounted on a movable slide forming with the axis of the points an angle which must be adjusted separately and successively to profile each side of the grinding wheel. By rotating the spindle of the grinding machine alternately forward and backward, while acting on the movable slide, the principle which has just been explained is very imperfectly achieved.
This realization is imperfect because, on the one hand, the inevitable and cumulative clearances which always exist in the kinematic chain of parts causing the movement of the machine table according to the rotation of its. spindle have the effect that the helical trajectory of the diamond is doubled. The diamond actually describes two helical trajectories, one of which corresponds to each direction of rotation of the spindle and which are offset by the amplitude of these games which are the clearance of the reduction gears which couple the lead screw to the spindle and the play of the lead screw in its nut and bearings.
The diamond therefore only cuts the grinding wheel in one direction of rotation and no longer touches it in the other.
Another drawback is that the duration of the contact of the diamond with the grinding wheel being very short, the amplitude of the reciprocating rotational movement of the spindle is always much too great, because it is not possible to automatically reverse the course of the table on a extremely short run. Considerable time is thus lost because the diamond only touches the grinding wheel during a very small fraction of this reciprocating motion.
A final and undoubtedly the most serious drawback of this embodiment is that the profiling device must be mounted between centers, in place of the workpiece and that, consequently, the grinding wheel cannot be resharpened without first remove the part and move the table tailstock by the necessary amount to support this profiling device. It would only be in a quite exceptional case where the workpiece would have the same length as the profiling device that it would not be necessary to move the tailstock.
The profiling device which has just been described eliminates all these drawbacks, because: 1. It has no play in itself - and cannot take any, because the initial tension of the coil spring 34 presses all of them. the parts which form the kinematic chain: movement against each other and absorb the play of the teeth of the gear 37, of the pinion 38 and of the slide 47; therefore, the diamond will always follow the same helical path in one direction as in the other; 2.
It can be placed on the table of the grinding machine, outside: .the space between the spindle and the tailstock; there will therefore be no need to remove the workpiece to use it and the tailstock can always remain in the place that suits the length of the workpiece; 3.
This device being mounted on the machine table, outside the space reserved for the workpiece, it will suffice to cut the grinding wheel to bring the table to a fixed position, defined by a stop and: in which. the same will be located opposite the grindstone; 4.
The pitch of the helix which: the diamond must describe is adjustable by the inclination of the inclined plane 59-59 'which forms an angle with the axis of the helicopter, the tangent of which is strictly proportional to the pitch generated. The micrometric screw 71 graduated in pitch values and acting on the inclined plane makes it possible to carry out this adjustment without any calculation; 5. In all other devices. With known profiles, it is necessary to adjust separately, for each side of the grinding wheel, the angle formed by the linear path: of the diamond with the axis of the thread.
The apparatus: described only comprises an angle adjustment and a rotation around the axis of the shaft 22 between the two fixed housings 26 in order to sharpen the two sides. of the grinding wheel, which is a great simplification for executing threads: with symmetrical profile which are the most common.
