Aus den Aufschlüssen geht hervor, dass die Extraktion unter den gewählten Bedin"un- gen vorteilhaft nach einstündiger Einwir kung der Säure unterbrochen -wird. -V ird der Extra.htionst orgas@. auf 17 @- Stunden ver längert, so ist zwar der ganze Rohstoff a.uf- ;
Process for the production of furol. The invention relates to a process for the production of furfural from raw materials containing pentosans with the help of dilute acids under pressure, whereby a pentose solution is first obtained from the pentosans contained in the raw material and the pentose solution is then processed into furfural, which is characterized by
that the pentosans containing raw materials for converting the pentosans into pentoses are treated with hydrochloric acid of 0.5 HCl and at a pressure of 2 atmospheres.
In vegetable raw materials such as beech wood, corn on the cob, oat shells, straw, etc., there are considerable amounts of pentosans, from which furfural can be obtained by converting them into pentoses. The transition of the pentosans to pentoses is carried out by hydrolysis, which takes place under the action of acids.
In contrast to this, the conversion of the pentoses into furfural is not a hydrolysis, but a splitting process. This process takes place with elimination of water, while the transition from pentosans to pentoses takes place with absorption of water.
Attempts have already been made to keep the two reactions apart as far as possible in the production of furfurol from raw materials containing pentosan, since a favorable success cannot be achieved if it is carried out in one go.
It has been shown that the pentoses formed by the action of the acid convert into furfural with prolonged exposure to the acid, but furfural formed in this way disappears again through polymerization, so that a significant reduction in yield occurs.
One proposal was to delimit the first stage by using a semi-normal sulfuric acid from the reaction process of the second stage. As a result, the pentoses formed by hydrolysis were not initially converted into furfural, but the hydrolysis proceeded only slowly and consequently secondary reactions could not be completely avoided. Since these side reactions lead to products which no longer give furfural, they can mean a significant deterioration in the yield.
From the known reaction ratio, it is therefore familiar to the person skilled in the art that one must ensure that the reaction in the first stage is carried out as quickly as possible so that the pentoses formed do not initially have the opportunity to form furfural or. thereby entering into side reactions. However, this cannot be achieved satisfactorily on the basis of the proposal just discussed.
Reaction conditions have now been found under which the reaction proceeds scheel, so that favorable yields can be achieved by eliminating side reactions, namely by using 0.5% HCl and a working pressure of 2 atmospheres, corresponding to a temperature of about 125. If you work under these conditions, you get different reaction ratios than when using half-normal sulfuric acid. Both exceeding the reaction conditions according to the invention and falling short of them are disadvantageous.
Of course, the exposure time is also important in the method according to the invention. On the one hand, efforts will be made to hydrolyze the pentosans present as completely as possible, but on the other hand, the reaction will be terminated as soon as the side reactions become significantly noticeable. The point in time at which the effect is expediently terminated can be determined for the various raw materials and their grain sizes through preliminary tests.
According to the new process, as experiments have shown, yields of pentoses can be achieved which, converted to furfural, amount to up to 36% of theory and more. In the following three tables are given, from which, for example, the implementation of the method can be inferred. They show in which - # fieise the correct intake duration is expediently determined.
The digestions show that the extraction under the selected conditions is advantageously interrupted after one hour of exposure to the acid. If the extra. Orgas @. Is extended to 17 @ hours, then the whole raw material a.uf-;
,,. closed, but the pentoses formed have already been partially split into furfural because of the tepid action of the acid. This furfural has decomposed under the given conditions. It is. as a result, only a small extraction residue is present, but the yields are still poor. If, on the other hand, you work with a disclosure time of one hour. in this way the most favorable ratio is achieved.
With a duration of 3 hours, a considerable amount of extraction residue remains, and the result is a low yield because of the incomplete digestion.
Since the acid only acts as a catalyst and is practically not consumed, the solutions obtained during an extraction can be used again for a subsequent extraction without impairing the yield. The pentose content is enriched in the liquid. The repetition can take place several times, for example two to three times.
In the tables are given experiments in which the extraction initially with. fresh solution and then twice more. the filtrate from the first operation was repeated. The starting material was divided into three lead portions and each part was extracted for the duration indicated in the top of the table. It turns out that the effect of the acidic solution is only slightly inhibited and that the solution can therefore be used several times.
The enrichment of the pentose solution is advantageous for further processing. The pentose solution obtained can be further processed on furfural in any known manner, for example by boiling with stronger hydrochloric acid with the passage of steam.
It may be useful to work in a pressure extraction battery. Table 1 Extraction of beech wood grain size 2-5 mm Approaches: in a 400 liter autoclave 3 batches (3 extractions) of 3% @ hours duration at 2 atm 0.5 HCl, liquor ratio: 1: 7. 1. hour reaction time has already been "overhydrolyzed".
