Process for the preparation of a condensation product from Phloroglncln and para-nitroaniline. In the reports of the German chemical society, 23 (1890) Referateband, page 488, Minunni describes a process for the preparation of symmetrical di- (Pheciylamino) oxybenzene respectively. Di- (paratolyl-amino) -oxybenzene, which consists in
that 1 mol. Phloroglucinol with 2 mol. para-Tolui- din respectively. Aniline is heated to 140-150 0 in a closed vessel for 6 hours. According to this process, as Minnuni himself states, the products mentioned are only formed in a yield of 40% of theory.
It has now been found that condensation products from phloroglucinol and aromatic amines are obtained in excellent yield in which a hydroxyl group of the phloroglucinol nucleus is still present; when phloroglucinol is heated with 2 moles of an aromatic amine in the presence of an aqueous solution of mineral acid.
The application of the present procedure is particularly recommended when phloroglucinol is to be condensed with more negatively substituted amines. Since triarylaminobenzenes are easily formed when strong bases are used in large excess in the presence of acids, the reaction conditions can be varied by suitable choice of the amount of amine and the acid added, as well as the heating time depending on the character of the amine, in order to achieve good yields of diarylamino -to obtain mono-oxybenzenes ..
The condensation products obtained are valuable intermediate products for the production of dyes or other organic compounds.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the preparation of a condensation product of phloroglucinol and para-nitroaniline, which is characterized in that phloroglucinol is heated with 2 moles of para-nitroaniline in the presence of an aqueous solution of mineral acid and the resulting mineral acid salt of the Condensation product converted into the free compound by the action of alkalis.
Example: 162 parts of phloroglucinol (containing water of crystallization) are boiled in 15 times the amount of water with 560 parts of para-nitroaniline and 204 parts of hydrochloric acid (specific weight 1.15) or the equivalent amount of sulfuric acid for 16 hours with stirring and reflux. The red powdery pulp is boiled several times with diluted soda solution. The residue, which is insoluble in the dilute soda solution, is washed out and dried.
The yield is 91% of theory (based on phloroglucinol. Tri- (4'-nitrophenylamino) benzene is not formed.
The previously unknown 1. 3. 6 - di - (4'-nitrophenylamino) - oxybenzene obtained is a brick-red powder that melts above 270 ° and dissolves smoothly in alcohol-containing sodium hydroxide solution.
