Electrical cable end box. The object of the present invention is an electrical cable end box of which at least one feedthrough insulator carries at each of its ends a metal member which is fixed thereto by a tight seal formed by a plastic member interposed between the 'insulator and the metal member and preventing external agents from entering as far as the part of the conductor passing through the insulator; this end box comprises at least one clamping device making it possible to press the plastic seal against the insulator.
The plastic seal may be formed from a metal, for example soft lead or hard lead, and not include cement, mastic or the like.
An embodiment of the object of the present invention is shown, schematically and by way of example, in the accompanying drawing which shows it in elevation, part in section, and applied to an electric cable with one conductor.
In this embodiment, the feedthrough insulator 1, made of porcelain or other suitable insulating material, carries at its upper end an annular collar 2, and at its lower end a fixing collar 3 with tabs, collars retained on the insulator by an intermediate plastic layer 4 metal, hard or soft lead.
The upper metal part 6, through which the conductor passes in a sealed manner not shown in the drawing, is covered with a protective cap and is fixed to the collar 2 by screws 5 which apply it against. the edge of the insulator by means of a tight seal 7; in a similar manner, the lower metal part 9, engaged on the end of the cable on which it is retained in the known manner, is fixed to the lower collar 3 by bolts 8 which press it against the edge of the insulator via a watertight seal 10.
As can be seen in the drawing, the two ends of the insulator 1 are not cylindrical, but generally conical in shape, the base of the cone formed by each of these ends being formed by the edge of the insulator ; in addition, the mantle of these two cones and the opposite faces of the collars 2 and 3 are not smooth, but have grooves and ribs.
It is clear that, by screwing in the screws 5 and the nuts of the bolts 8, the collars 2 and 3 are pulled towards the base of the respective cone, which has the effect of pulling the plastic seals 4 towards the base of these cones. by compressing them against the insulator 1 on which a pressure is thus exerted by these linings as well as by the seals 7 and 10.
These clamping devices are therefore constituted by the collar 2, respectively 3, and by the screws 5, respectively the bolts 8.
The - grooves and ribs that 1, 2 and 3 present make the surfaces of these elements facing each other larger than if they were smooth, and have the effect in particular of retaining the waterproof plastic layers 4 and drive them when tightening.
In the embodiment shown, a perfect sealing of the end box is obtained by the fact that the plastic sealing gaskets 4, as well as the sealing gaskets 7 and 10, are clamped against the insulator by the locking devices. Tightening. The seal thus achieved is greater than that obtained in end boxes, the upper and lower collars of which are fixed to the insulator by a material such as cement, or putty, or lead, etc. without a device for clamping this material against the insulator.
An end box according to the present invention can be applied to a cable with several conductors, and it can differ from the embodiment shown, for example: in the shape of the feed-through insulator, in the shape of the clamps , by the shape of the clamping members, etc .; the space intended to receive the metal plastic body 4 intermediate between the ends of the insulator and the metal members 2 and 3 can have any other shape suitable for reinforcing the effect of compression of this body by the collars, etc. .
