Abstract

A unitary palletized packaging assembly (10) in which the outer carton (32) and the manufacturing transport base (18) are secured to the shipping pallet (12) to prevent lateral movement of the transport base (18) and packaged article (50) with respect to the shipping pallet (12).

Claims (15)

1. An assembly (10) for packaging an article (50), the assembly 10 comprising:

a shipping pallet (12) having a load bearing surface supported by parallel, spaced apart, side runners (15);

a substantially rectangular transport base (18) resting on the shipping pallet load bearing surface and comprising a bottom panel (20) having four corners and a perimeter partly defined by first opposing fold lines (24), and side panels (28) hingedly attached to the bottom panel (20) along the first set of opposing fold lines (24); and a carton (32) surrounding the transport base (18) and comprising four side walls (34) having bottom edges and four bottom flaps foldably attached to the carton side wall bottom edges, the bottom flaps comprising front and rear flaps (36) and two side flaps (38), the front and rear flaps (36) being folded under the transport base (18) and interposed between the transport base (18) and the shipping pallet, the side flaps (38) extending downward;

wherein the transport base side panels (28) extend downward and are interposed between the pallet side runners (15) and the carton side flaps (38), and wherein the carton side flaps (38) and transport base side panels (28) are secured to the pallet side runners (15).

The assembly (10) of claim 1 wherein the transport base bottom panel perimeter is further defined by a second opposing fold lines (22) and wherein the transport base (18) further comprises front and rear panels (26) hingedly attached to the bottom panel (20) along the second opposing fold lines (22).
3. The assembly (10) of claim 2 wherein the transport base (18) further comprises a plurality of load bearing cushioning elements (30) arranged in spaced relation on the bottom panel (20) near its perimeter.
4. The assembly (10) of claim 3 wherein the transport base further comprises front and rear panels (26) which at least partially encapsulate the cushioning elements (30).
5. The assembly (10) of claim 4 wherein each front and rear panel (26) comprises a side wall (27) foldably connected to the transport base bottom panel (20) along one of the second fold lines (22) and a top wall (29) foldably connected to the side wall (27) along a third fold line (25).
6. The assembly (10) of claim 5 wherein the side walls (27) extend upward from the second opposing fold lines (22) substantially perpendicular to the bottom panel (20) and the top walls (29) extend horizontally inward from the third fold lines (25), and wherein the top walls (29) cover at least a portion of the cushioning elements (30).
7. The assembly (10) of claim 6 wherein the top walls (29) are affixed to one or more of the cushioning elements (30).
8. The assembly (10) of claim 7 further comprising corner posts (17) disposed within the carton (32).
9. The assembly (10) of claim 8 wherein cushioning elements (30) are disposed near each corner of the bottom panel (20) and are spaced away from each corner a distance sufficient to accommodate the corner posts (17).
10. The assembly (10) of claim 1 wherein the shipping pallet (12) further comprises elongated, spaced apart, front and rear stops (16) affixed to the side runners (15), and wherein a bottom portion of the carton (32) and at least a portion of the transport base (18) are located between the front and rear stops (16).
11. The assembly (10) of claim 11 wherein the bottom portion of the carton (32) and the at least a portion of the transport base (18) are wedged between the front and rear stops (16).
12. The assembly (10) of claim 10 wherein the shipping pallet load bearing surface is defined by a plurality of spaced apart cross members (14) affixed to the side runners (15).
13. The assembly (10) of claim 12 wherein the front and rear stops (16) are directly attached to the side runners (15) and are oriented perpendicular to the side runners (15).
14. The assembly (10) of claim 1 wherein the carton side flaps (38) and transport base side panels (28) are secured to the pallet side runners (15) by staples.
15. An assembly (10) for packaging an article (50), comprising:
a pallet (12) to support the article (50);

a shock absorbing base (18) interposed between the article (50) and the pallet (12); and load bearing members (17) interposed between the article (50) and the protective material (32);

wherein the base (18) and the protective material (34) are securely joined to the base (12) on opposite sides of the assembly (10); and wherein the protective material (32) on opposite remaining sides of the assembly (10) is folded under the product (50) to hold the protective material (32) and the article (50) in place with respect to the pallet (12).
