Abstract

VAGINAL APPLICATOR

Abstract of the Disclosure An improved vaginal applicator comprising a tubular member and a piston-rod assembly slideably positioned in the tubular member is described.

Description

~333Z
ORTH 31~

This invention relates to a vaginal applicator and has as its general object ~he provision o~ an improved vaginal applicator for the introduction of jellies, medica-ments, salves and the like.

The medication applying device o this invention is of t~e type for introducing a medicament or ointment into a body cavity such as the ~aglna, in a clean and sanitary manner. The device is particularly useful where it may be necessary to inject a prescribed amount of-such medication into the ca~ity to remedy a condition for which the medica-tion has been prescribed. The device is designed so that it can be easily dismantled or cleaning after use; in this way the device can be used many tLmes before it is finally dis-carded. The~ease with which the device can be cleaned .
15 ~ ~lessens the possibility of infection upon reuse. Prior devices in this field have been deslgned for repetitive use of the injector, but such use may have the effect of rein-- fecting the cavity area or aggravating the existing condi-~ tion if ~he injector is not properly cleaned prior to its reuse. ~The prior art devices are often compri3ed of several different parts which must be disassembled prior to cleaning.
Existing prior art applicators have either a separate button to be unscrewed ~or disassembly or a snap feature to provide a stop when~the barrel is ull. The plu~ger is forced through the stop in order to disassemble the applicator.
Frequently, residues contained in several parts of the injector are dificult to remove wlth normal cleaning leaving deposits in the device whi~h may lead to infection on reuse.

' .

, 3;~;2 The device of this invention is simple in design and opera-tion for easy utilization by patient or physician. In addition, the two parts which constitute the apparatus of the invention can be constructed of hygenic material, are easily assembled and dis assembled and are easily cleansed for safe contact with delicate internal tissues.
An object of the invention is to provide a dispenser by means of which a pharmaceutical composition may be neatly, qulckly and conveniently dispensed into a body cavity.
Another object of this invention is to provide a dispenser of simple and inexpensive cons-truction which can be easily dis~
assembled and re-assembled for easy cleaning and reuse of the device.
An important object of this invention is to provide a dis-penser which is not bulky and is convenient to carry and use.
Thus, in accordance with the present teachings, a vaginal applicator is provided which comprises a tubular member which is ;~
open at both ends and a piston-rod assembly which is capable of being slideably positioned in the tubular member, the piston-rod assembly has an external thread at its forward end and the tubular member has a bore in which is defined a medicament chamber and has an internal thread at the proximal end thereof adapted for receipt of the threaded end of the piston-rod assembly.
These and other objects of this invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings as well as in the appended claims.

Fig. 7 is a ~artial cross-~ectio~ of the device in closed position.

Referrin~ now to the drawing in detail, the vaginaL
applicator of the present invention comprises tubular member 10 and piston-rod assembly 11.

lG Tubular member 10 is preferably cylindrical in shape and contains a bore 15 along its entire length which defines a medicament chamber. Tubular member 10 also contains an internal thread 13 at its proximal end. Internal thread ~ 13 serves ~as a~stop means for the piston-rod assembly 11 when the appllcator is being used.

Piston-rod assembly 11 has a diameter slightly less than the in~ide diameter of tubular member 10 and is installed in tubular member 10 through the proximal end opening 16 and is slldeable through the barxel during discharge of its contents through the distal end openlng 15. Piston-rod assembly 1I contains an external thxeaded loop 12 at its forward end which~is adapted to receive by screw fit internal threaded loop 13 on tubular member 10. Pi~ton-rod assembly 11 is installed in tubular member 10 by first .
engaging external ~threaded loop 12 with internal threaded loop 13 and passing piston-rod assembly 11 into the medica-ment chamber. Piston-rod assembly 11 is provided with knob 14 to facilitate the application of pressure on rod 11 when expelling the medicament. Knob 14 also serves to ~ 333~

prevent pist~n-rQd a5sembly 11 from sliding through tubular member 10 when in operation. The piston-rod assembly 10, minus knob 14, is slightly shorter in length that the overall length of tubuLar member 10.

S In actual use, the piston-rod assembly is drawn up i~to the tubular member to the position shown in Fig. 1 and the device is filled with the medicamant or ointment to be dispensed eithex by pressure applied to a tube con-taining the material or through the use of suitable pressurized containers such as an aerosol can, for example.
Where the applicator is to be ~illed from a tube, it is convenient to have an internal thread at the distal end of tubular member 10 for receipt of the nozzle of the tube.
This avoids any unnecessary waste of the medicament. The pressurized container can be used to dispense predetermined amounts of the~medicament into the applicator. For ease of determining the exac~ amount to be dispensed, tubular member 10 may also contain a series of calibrations along its length whick indicate the amount of material contained in the chamber. Once thé tubular member is filled, its contents are expelled by inserting the device into the body cavity and gently driving piston-rod assembly 11 in the direction of bore 15 untll all of the material has been expelled.

~ To clean the device, piston-rod aasembly 11 is disengaged from tubular member 10 ~y turning it through internal threaded loop 13 un~il it is free. Cleaning may be accomplished in any known manner such as washing with soap and water, ~for example.

The vaginal applicator of th~ present invention can be made from any of a number of known synthetic resins or thennoplastic materials. The particular material employed shouLd be compatible wlth the intended jelly, ointment or S cream contents and with body kissues. Elastic and relatively rigid synthetic resins or thermoplastic material.s which can be employed to mold or otherwise form the piston-rod assembly and tubular member of the present in~ention include materials such as ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate, polyethylene, polystyrene, vinyl chloride-viny~ acetate copolymer, vinyl chloride resin, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride and the like.

Thus there has been shown here and described a novel two-piece applicator which fulfilIs all o the objects and advanta~es sought therefor. Many changes, alterations, , modiflcations, and other uses and applications of the subject devlce will, however, become apparent to those skilled in the art after consldering this specification and the accompanying drawing which discloses a pre~erred embodi-ment thereof. All such changes, alterations, modifications, and other~uses- and applications which do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention are deemed to be covered by the invention which is limi~ed only by the following claims.
