<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
'de pivotement 11 e't la charnière 9. Ce ressort s'oppose à l'effort, exercé par le tronc incliné vers l'arrière sur le dossier 6, et s'associe au poids des jambes pesant sur le porte-jambes 8 amené en position utile, pour obtenir un équilibre des poids.
REVENDICATIONS.

The present invention relates to a known type of armchair convertible into a lounge chair, comprising a backrest, a seat and a leg holder fixed, by means of mounts, movably to the carcass of the armchair and interconnected in such a way that the transformation from one position to the other is effected by tilting backwards or forwards the body of the person occupying the chair, by modifying the relative angular positions of the individual parts.
The essential condition to be fulfilled by a chair of this kind is that each transformation is achieved without resorting to special handles or any powerful effort, but only by a corresponding movement of the body of the person occupying the chair, and that in addition to a state of equilibrium is ensured throughout
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
intermediate position between the two extreme positions of the convertible chair. This condition is only imperfectly fulfilled by the known embodiments of armchairs of this kind.
These known execution forwes have been found to have the defect that it is impossible to obtain a well-balanced position intermediate between the two limit positions, without the occupant keeping the body tense, unless resorting to a complicated and expensive mechanism composed of a large number of levers and articulated parts to facilitate the change of position.
These defects are eliminated in the device according to the present invention, by using movable parts of the chair, the backrest, the seat and the leg holder, which are connected to each other by hinges. The basic idea of the invention is that the backrest is pivotally mounted in the fixed frame of the; wheelchair, on an axis located vertically under the center of gravity of the person occupying the wheelchair. The backrest therefore constitutes a lever with a rocking arm around this fixed pivot axis.
The seat is hinged to this lever, above the pivot axis, and is held and guided, in the front part of the fixed frame, on pins, so that, when the backrest is tilted towards rearward or forward, the seat is not only driven backward or forward, but also undergoes a change in its inclination.
The legrest, which is articulated to the front edge of the seat by means of hinges, is held and guided by a movable guide rod mounted concentrically to the pivot axis of the seat.
This rod thus produces, when the seat is moving, a forced guiding of the legrest, in this direction due to the latter being obliged to keep a practically horizontal position. With this arrangement, a displacement of the weight of the body, by tilting the trunk backwards or forwards, is sufficient to bring the chair from the seated position to the lying position or vice versa or even
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in any possible intermediate position, whereby the weight which exerts a rearward force is each time balanced by the force exerted by the legs weighing on the leg holder and the seat. The body is thus completely relaxed in any position.
The balancing of the chair is therefore obtained in each position by the fact that the more the torque exerted by the rearward tilt of the trunk increases, the more. the torque exerted by the door legs which raises also increases and in the same proportion, the lifting exerting on the other hand a reaction of equal force on the front edge of the seat. @
The accompanying drawings show two embodiments of the invention, each embodiment being shown in its two extreme positions.
Figures 1 and 2 show an embodiment, in which the leg holder assumes a vertical position in the sitting position of the chair.
Figures 3 and 4 show an embodiment in which the leg holder retracts under the seat in the sitting position of the chair.
The frame of the chair is made up of a pair of side parts with armrests 1, feet 2 and connecting panels 3 linked together by two cross members 4 and 5. The movable parts of the chair are the back 6 , the seat 7 and the leg holder 8, which are united by respective hinges 9 and 10. The backrest frame 6 is extended downwards and fixed to the cross member 5 by a hinge 11, so that this hinge also constitutes the backrest pivot axis. The location of this hinge is chosen such that the pivot axis is substantially vertical below the assumed center of gravity of a person seated in the chair.
The seat 7 is, moreover, maintained and guided on pivot pins.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
ment 12 integral with the fixed carcass, by means of a slotted plate 15, bolted to the frame of the seat. When changing positions, the seat moves over the pins 12, through the slot 14. It is useful to keep the pins 12 with rollers, in order to facilitate movement.
The slot 14 has a specific shape which ensures that the seat 7, during its rearward movement following the tilting of the backrest
6, at the same time undergoes a change of inclination due to the raising of its front edge.
This is clearly shown in the drawings. The rod 16 is articulated to the frame of the wheelchair concentrically to the pivot pins 12, the other end of this rod attacking the leg holder 8 below the hinge 10. This rod has a shape such that it forces the leg holder 8, driven with the seat 7 during the backward and forward movements, to maintain a practically horizontal position. i, in the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, the leg holder takes a vertical position in the sitting position of the chair, in the embodiment shown in Figures 3 and 4, the leg holder is tilted under the siege and becomes invisible.
This different arrangement is obtained by changing the position of the hinge-10. In the first case, the axis of the hinge is provided at the height of the upper edge of the seat frame 7, and, in the second case, at the height of the lower edge. In this second case, the leg-holder describes another tilting trajectory, passing from the folded position to the position of use, and only becomes useful when the backrest 6 and the seat 7 ,,. have already partially tilted back.
To ensure here also a perfect balancing of the moving masses, a tension spring 17 is provided, one end of which is attached to the fixed cross member 4 of the frame of the chair and the other end of which is attached to the extension of the backrest between the 'axis
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
'pivot 11 and the hinge 9. This spring opposes the force exerted by the trunk tilted backwards on the backrest 6, and is associated with the weight of the legs weighing on the leg holder 8 brought to a useful position, to obtain a balance of the weights.
The seat can be guided or suspended in other ways in the frame of the chair. It suffices to ensure that the seat follows, by forced guidance, a movement path through which the tilting of the backrest allows the desired change of position of this seat.
