<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

MACHINE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF WAX PLUGS.
The making of wax candles dates back several centuries and has not undergone a great change for many, many years. The method generally adopted at the present time consists in casting wax in a mold along an axis of which a wick is stretched. The wick passes through a hole drilled in a piston located at the lower end of the mold and the shape of which is chosen so as to form the conical or roughly conical end of the spark plug.
To remove the spark plug from the mold, the piston is raised and the wick is cut so that a short length of it remains from the tip of the spark plug. This process requires the use of labor. specialized and furthermore has the disadvantage of taking a great deal of time to classify and prepare the candles for packaging, in addition to the time required for the manufacture of the candles themselves. In addition, it results in considerable waste of wick.
The patent application filed that same day by the Applicant for "Method for manufacturing candles and similar articles describes a method for manufacturing a continuous wick rod covered with wax by cold pressing of solid wax and transformation of this rod in candles by bringing together by a relative movement the successive free ends of the rod of a rotary knife, which discovers a short length of the wick at this end of the rod, then by successively cutting the lengths of rods which constitute the candles.
The object of the invention is a machine capable of operating at high speed to transform a wick stick covered with wax into candles and to form the tip of each candle by a clean and smooth cut.
The invention therefore consists of a machine for making candles from a continuous wax-coated wick wand which comprises an advancing device supporting the wand and advancing it alternately the length of a candle and the same. now stationary, a rotary knife forming the point having the same axis as the rod,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
mounted so as to receive a movement along the axis bringing it closer to and away from the free end of the rod and comprising one or more blades whose shape and / or arrangement are chosen such that, \) when the knife comes into contact with the stick, the blades uncover a short length of wick and cut the tip of the wax, making it take the desired shape,
the blades being tangent to the point of the wax which they are cutting, a reciprocating device bringing the blade closer to and away along the axis the point forming knife and a cutting knife whose movement is synchronized with that of the reciprocating device and which releases the desired length of rod when the tip forming knife has served its purpose and the rod is held stationary.
The machine according to the invention can be easily arranged so as to deliver the finished candles directly in packages to be sent to customers or to a carton filling machine, thus achieving a considerable saving in labor by compared to the known method described above. In addition, the machine can be operated by unskilled workers and allows a saving of wick compared to the known method.
The machine according to the invention can be advantageously combined with a machine serving to manufacture a continuous wick wand covered with wax by the process forming the subject of the aforementioned patent.
A preferably selected embodiment of the invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which - Figure 1 is a perspective view of a machine for pressurizing a wick rod. covered with wax; FIG. 2 is an elevation of a machine for transforming the wick stick covered with wax into candles; - Figure 3 is an end view of the machine. of Figure 2 observed along the line III-III of this figure and - Figures 4A and 4B are respectively end and perspective views of the tip forming knife.
The machine of Figure 1 is described in a few words only, since it is described in detail in the aforementioned patent. The wax is discharged under pressure out of a delivery cylinder 20 by a piston 18 through a die plate fixed to the nozzle plate 29.
The nozzle plate assembly is hinged to the base plate 28, so as to allow the discharge cylinder to be loaded with a rod of discharge wax. The piston operates hydraulically under the action of the oil coming from a reservoir 13 and delivered into the hydraulic cylinder 16 by a pump 14 actuated by the motor 15. The wick wound on the reel 36 is introduced in the center of the cylinder. die plate by a curved tube, not shown in the drawing, and is driven forward by the wax as it is forced under pressure. The wax-coated wick rod 53 passes through a device in which it follows a path of variable length and which has a fixed pulley 54 and a movable pulley 50 rolling on inclined rails 52.
This device makes it possible to stop the upsetting machine for recharging it with wax without stopping the tip forming and cutting machine.
The tip forming and cutting machine of Figures 2 and 3 has a series of four pairs of cylinders 60 which drive and support rod 53 and advance it into tip forming knife holder 61. The cylinders 60 are fixed on shafts 70 which are rotatably mounted on a frame formed of plates 71 rigidly bolted to one another. The shafts 70 also include pairs of toothed wheels 72 meshing with each other and wedged on the shafts.
70, the lower wheel of each pair also meshing with an idler gear
73. One of the idler gears 73 is driven by a control gear 74 wedged
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
on a shaft 75 rotatably mounted in the plates 71.
A hollow shaft 76, mounted on the shaft 75, can rotate independently of it and comprises a bevel wheel 77 wedged on it. This conical wheel meshes with a bevel wheel 78 wedged on the shaft 79 of a motor not shown. One end of the shaft 76 comprises an arm 80 wedged on it and on which is mounted in oscillation a pawl 81 carrying a cam roller 82 which is urged by a spring not shown in contact with a fixed cam 83. The pawl 81 cooperates with a ratchet wheel 84 set on shaft 75. Drive shaft 79 receives continuous rotational movement from the drive motor and continuously rotates bevel gear 77, hollow shaft 76 and arm 80 in a clockwise direction., figure 2.
When roller 82 is in contact with the lowered portions of cam 83, pawl 81 engages ratchet wheel 84 and rotates shaft 75 and hence wheel 74 and cylinders 60. - As the roller 82 passes over an arc projecting from the cam 83, the pawl 81 comes out of the ratchet wheel 84 and the shaft 75 and the cylinders 60 stop rotating. The cylinders 60 thus receive an intermittent movement. To prevent the rollers from continuing to rotate and to keep them stationary while not being operated, a locking arm 85 has a hook-shaped end which cooperates with studs 90 disposed on the surface of the wheel. toothed 74.
The arm 85 constitutes one of the arms of an elbow lever 85-86 which oscillates about an axis 87 on the plate 71. The arm 86 carries a cam roller 88 which is held by a spring not shown as contact with a cam 89 wedged on the hollow shaft 76. The shape of the cam 89 and the interval between the studs 90 are chosen so that, when the shaft 76 occupies an angular position in which the pawl 81 is released from the ratchet wheel 84, the cam 89 lowers the hook of the arm 85 which comes into contact with one of the studs 90 and stops the movement of the wheel 74 and the cylinders 60. The shaft 76 continues to rotate. cam 89 allows the roller 88 to move closer to the center and consequently raises the hook of the arm 85 by disengaging it from the stud 90.
The wax rod 53, which the cylinders 60 intermittently advance, passes through a guide tube 91, then below bars 92 hinged on lugs 93 directed from bottom to top from a fixed passage 69 on the machine in a manner not shown. A fractional HP motor 62 has collars 94 with projecting bearing portions 95 disposed on either side of the motor and slidably mounted on guide bars 96 fixed in a frame 97. The motor shaft 62 is directed along the same axis as the rod 53 and has a tip-forming knife holder fixed to it and generally designated by 61.
The knife holder 61 has a collar 98 which screws onto the motor shaft and carries four protruding rods 99 supporting knife blades. Each of the rods is bent at its end, Figure 4A and 4B, and a blade 100 is fixed to each end by a viso The ends of the rods 99 being bent, the blades 100 cut in the shape of a cone the end of the rod 53 and remain in a position tangent to the conical tip thus obtained As shown in FIG. 4A, the blades do not meet in the center and leave a small hole 101 through which passes the bit uncovered once the conical tip Due to the tangential position of the blades, a clean and smooth cut is obtained,
even when the machine is running at high speed and for example making 300 candles per minute.
Collar 98 is surrounded by a sleeve 102, which bolts to the face of motor 62. Sleeve 102 has bearing pins 103 on which the yoke-shaped ends 104 of arm 65 can rotate freely. . The lower end of the arm 65 is mounted on a fixed axle 105 and the arm is held in contact with a cam 64 by a tension spring 106. The control shaft 79 rotates the cam through it. of a helical pinion 113.
A guide plate 115 is bolted onto the sleeve 102 and is pierced with a hole through which the rod 53 passes so as to immobilize during the tip forming operation.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
A cutting knife 66 is fixed by a washer 107 on a disc 67 which is fixed on the hub 108 of a chain sprocket 109. The hub 108 is fixed by a tightening screw on a shaft 110 supported by bearings not shown. , on plate 71. The chain sprocket 109 is actuated by a chain 111, which passes over a similar chain sprocket 112 wedged on the control shaft 79.
The machine operates as follows: wand 53 advances intermittently in the manner described above toward the tip forming knife holder 61. When the length of the advancing rod is approximately equal to the length of the spark plug, the protruding portion of cam 64 contacts arm 65 and causes movement of the knife holder, bringing it into contact. with the free end of the rod 53.
This movement along the axis of the knife holder, which receives a continuous rotational movement by the motor 62, is sufficient to expose a short length of wick, and make the tip of the wax stick set. conical shape, as described above. When the rod has advanced the full length of a spark plug, the movement of the cylinders 60 stops and, after the punch forming operation - when finished, the arm 65 leaves the projecting portion of the cam 64 and allows the spring 106 to return the knife holder 61 from left to right, releasing the tip of the stick 53. The cutting knife 66 then comes into contact with the rod 53 and the cup, so as to form the finished candle.
This is pushed into the lane 69 by an elastic arm which is carried by the shaft 110 and runs in a notch in the upper part of the lane 69. The spark plug exits the central hole of the guide plate 115 through a slot. 116 cut in the plate between its periphery and its central hole.
