B R E V E T D'INVENTION "Improvements to vertical diaphragm electrolysers Jacques Philippe LEMAIRE
The duration of the carbon anodes used in electrolysers of the vertical diaphragm type is (not naturally taking into account the intrinsic quality of the carbon) a function of the greater or lesser degree of perfection of the parallelism between anodes and cathodes.
Indeed, if this parallelism is not perfect, current surges are established in the coals at the places where they are closer to the cathodes. These local overloads naturally cause their disintegration and premature wear.

This drawback is avoided by the arrangements which form the subject of the present invention.
The main characteristic of said invention consists in that the carbon anode is formed by a circular or prismatic cylinder which is perforated along its axis with a blind hole large enough to receive a support rod made of unassailable material. by the electrolytic solution and by the products of the latter. This rod

The transverse dimensions of the hole and the rod. are such that the clearance between them Under these conditions the anode is held and centered. The immobilizer of the lower part of the support rod is placed in such a way in the cell that the two portions of the anode facing the cathodes are equidistant from it.
The current is brought to the anode, preferably by an integral carbon pencil, by screwing for example, of the upper part of the anode. The lower end of this pencil may form the bottom of the anode hole.
Thanks to this arrangement of the anode, it is easy to seal the passage of the current supply rod through the ceiling of the gas chamber, this sealing being here obtained by a simple pour of sealant.
The accompanying drawing shows by way of example one way of carrying out the invention.
In this drawing:

fig. 2 is a perspective elevation, with partial cutouts of a fragment of such a cell.
In the embodiment shown in the drawing, the cell comprises, in the usual manner, a frame 1, on both sides of which are applied and held, by a known suitable device, the cathode elements 2.

The joint between the rod 9 and the ceiling 10 is obtained by running on the ceiling 10, which is placed a little below the upper part of the frame 1, a grout of tarry mastic such as those usually used to make the joints in the joints. electrolyte cells.
From what has been explained above, we realize that the position of the elementary anodes, with respect to the cathode elements, is correctly ensured as regards the parallelism between anode and cathode, because the elementary anodes do not. can undergo lateral sliding, they rest by their weight on a rigid support, at a point which is neither susceptible to wear nor deterioration and which is located above their center of gravity. These anodes ele -

The electrolyser will always retain, as long as there is some thickness of carbon left around the tub 5 or support rod, their rigid vertical position and their perfect alignment in the median plane of the cathodes.
Their distances from the latter will therefore always be identical and regular. On the other hand, it is easy, by rotating the anodes around their axis, to modify their orientation so as to present new portions of elementary anodes opposite the cathodes, when these anodes have undergone sufficient wear to bring about an undesirable increase in the voltage between anode and cathode.
Finally, the axial perforation of the elementary anodes allows a more regular impregnation of the latter, the penetration of the impregnation liquid (linseed oil for example) taking place both from the inside and from the outside. In addition, the air trapped in the pores of the coals can more easily escape during the impregnation, there is less to be fear that parts of the coals will not be impregnated.
