BREVET D'INVENTION PERFECTIONNEMENTS AUX DOUCISSAGE ET POLISSAGI DES MATIERES DURES, TEL LE VERRE ET AUX APPA.
REILS D'EXECUTION.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

PATENT OF INVENTION IMPROVEMENTS IN SOFTENING AND POLISHING OF HARD MATERIALS, SUCH AS GLASS AND APPA.
REILS OF EXECUTION.
The invention relates to the smoothing and polishing of hard materials, such as glass, and relates in particular to the smoothing and polishing of these materials using friction tools shaped as a body of revolution, driven in rotation on them. same and simultaneously moved on the surface of the structure following a determined path,
The use in grinding and in particular for polishing, in particular of glass, of rubbing tools oonformed into a body of revolution in itself presents significant advantages.
It is in fact known that the polishers of current general use, and constituted by circular plates applied by a flat face lined with felt, cause by their work a fairly significant heating of the glass.
This heating results in unequal expansion of the carrier and of the sheet or ice as well as the rer of bumps in the glass and, by passing over these bumps, the polishers alter the planimetry of the glass, that is to say one of the essential qualities that a polished mirror must have.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Although rubbing tools shaped as a body of revolution and the like, in particular in the form of cylinders,: cones, also cause the glass to heat up by friction, this heating is much lower than that caused by tools in the form of a plate. - in particular teaux, due to the fact / that the worked area is not, for an equal surface, concentrated as in these tools but on the contrary extended, and that, while for tools in the form of plates, the active surface remains in permanent contact with the work, that of tools conforming to a body of revolution is continually renewed in the zone of contact with the work and is further cooled by its contact with air in the intervals of successive passages through the said area.
In addition, by rotating, the friction members shaped as a body of revolution create ventilation which cools the surface of the glass.
On the other hand the smoothing as well as the polishing is due, as we know, to the formation, in the worked surface, of increasingly fine scratches and overlapping in all directions, the work being all the more perfect. that the final scratches are finer and above all that the overlaps are more numerous.
It is possible to obtain intersections of the scratches formed by the rubbing tools, the latter rotating on themselves, on the one hand by displacements on the surface of the work of the said rubbing tools or of the rubbing tool devices, and d on the other hand by judicious interlacing of the trajectories of different rubbing tools or of tools belonging to different devices, and of those of the devices considered.
The object of the invention is to improve the work performed by the individual rubbing tools so as to obtain a more perfect performance of the polishing or smoothing or, even better, a significant reduction in the execution time. .
For this purpose it consists, mainly, while in the aforementioned methods of obtaining overlaps, supposing that the displacement on the work of the tool or of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
positive to which a given tool belongs, as well as the interlacing of the trajectories of different tools or belonging to different devices, the tool considered would form in the material a unique system of scratches, that is to say scratches which, at each passage through a determined point, substantially merge with the stripes formed at this point during the previous passage (s), to be formed using the tool, at each passage, a system of stripes associated with a other system .at least of stripes which intersect the first ones,
It also consists in organizing the rubbing tools shaped as a body of revolution,
and their connections to the friction tool devices, in such a way that the direction of the displacement which the body of revolution would execute, if it were only requested by its single rotational movement, does not agree with the displacement which is imposed on it by its links with the devices using rubbing tools.
It also preferably consists in arranging the axis around which the rubbing tool rotates on itself in an angular position other than 0. or 1800, with respect to all, or at least the great majority of the spokes. snapshots of the curve of the displacements of said tool, this curve possibly being re-rotated or comprising rectilinear portions.
And in order that one may well understand how the above characteristics can be practically realized, the invention will hereinafter be described in more detail and by way of example in some of its preferred embodiments. , and together with its application to the grinding and polishing of materials such as glass, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which!

6 to 8.
Referring to fig. 1, 1 designates a friction member established in the form of a body of revolution, schematized by a cylinder, which is rotated around its YY axis at the same time as it is moved on a structure 4, which is, for example, a sheet of glass, in the direction of arrow F, coincident with that which would result from its sole rotation, and in the present case normal to the YY axis. This rubbing member 1 thus forms in the surface of the work grinding or polishing stripes a which are parallel to the following displacement F, as indicated by the arrow Fa. When the rubbing member, after having completed a any path, for example in a reciprocating movement, will pass back to the place considered, it will again form stripes such as a ,. in principle confused with the former.
The overlap necessary for the performance of the desired work must / be sought in the application of other means, in particular in the passage, at the location considered, of another rubbing member whose displacement s 'performs on a different path. cylindrical
In fig. 2, the friction member / 1 pria as an example still rotates around the YY axis, and it is also moved as a whole in the direction of the arrow F, but, as can be seen, the direction of displacement F is no longer normal to the YY axis but forms an angle with this axis which is different from 0 (or 180) and 90 ..
Under these conditions, by its displacement along F, 1 'friction member will still form stripes a parallel to F, as indicated by the arrow Fa, but, by its rotation around the YY axis, it will also form stripes b directed perpendicularly to its axis of rotation, as indicated by the arrow Fb, and which reoou-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
pent, at any time, the scratches a.
When, after any path, the rubbing member will return to the location in question, it will again form intersecting stripes a and stripes b,
It is easy to see that the overlaps necessary for the execution of the grinding or polishing work are thus obtained using @ the only member 1, and that if, simultaneously, another rubbing member is made to act, moving along a different trajectory, and arranged in the same way, on the one hand the perfection of the smoothing and the polishing will be, all things being equal, greatly accentuated, and on the other hand, with equal perfection, the time to the action can be considerably reduced.
In Figures 3 and 4, there is shown a practical arrangement of an apparatus with rubbing tools comprising application of the principles indicated above.
According to FIG. 3, the apparatus comprises a frame 10 in which is mounted a shaft 21 driven in continuous rotation by any suitable source of motive force, such as the motor 16, transmitting its movement via the axis 33 and the toothed pinion 32, to a ring gear 31 fixed on the shaft 21 by the key 29.
The shaft 21 carries, at its lower part, a plate 23, made integral with the shaft by the key 24 and comprising a certain number of bearings 22 for rotating shafts 20 carrying friction members.
These members are constituted by conical bodies of revolution, 17, provided with polishing linings 37 and connected to their respective shafts 20, preferably by so-called elastic joints, such as 18, formed of superimposed plates, as is described more in detail in another patent application of the same date by the applicant.
At their internal ends, the shafts 20 carry conical toothed pinions 25, meshing with a toothed crown 26 fixed to the frame 10 by a key 27.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Preferably, the frame 10 is mounted so as to be able to be moved apart and brought closer together (the structure 4 can be adjusted in an adjustable manner and, for this purpose, it is mounted to slide in guides 11, the rollers 12 facilitating the displacements, and connected, by the articulation 141, to a lever 14, itself articulated at a fixed point, and provided with an adjustable balancing counterweight, the support articulation and the counterweight not being shown .
As shown in plan in Figure 4, the YY axes around which the friction members 17 turn on themselves, are not disposed radially, but are connected tangentially to a circle 38, with the result that these axes form an angle with those , such as ZZ, from normal displacement and in the present case, different from 900 and from 0 or 180 with the direction F 'of drive indicated for one of them.
Under these conditions, when the shaft 21 is driven in rotation, the friction members 17 are driven circularly around the axis XX on the one hand, and on the other hand in rotation on themselves around the axes YY, forming, by the first of the above rotations, scratches such as a and, by the second, scratches such as b which intersect the first as it is shown for the organ 17 on the right of the figure '4.
We can easily deduce from this figure that we can modify at will the angle at which the stripes a and b overlap by suitably modifying the radius of the connecting circle, or the eccentricity of the axes YY, l ' the most favorable eccentricity can of course be determined from the material of the work 4 to be smoothed or polished.
In FIG. 5 there is shown an exemplary arrangement of two devices with friction members and indicated, for an area of the structure 4, groups of stripes formed by the passages of a friction member of each of these devices. , providing at least three overlaps in different directions.
In Figures 6, 7 and 8, there is shown another practical arrangement of an apparatus with rubbing tools comprising a
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
application of the principles indicated above,
In this arrangement the apparatus comprises a relatively fixed frame 40 in which is mounted a shaft 41 driven in continuous rotation by any suitable source of motive force, which has not been shown.
The shaft 41 is made integral, for example by olaveta- tion, with a rotating frame generally designated by 42.
On the shaft 41 is threaded a drive wheel 43, for example toothed, kept fixed in rotation by any means, for example by making it integral with a sleeve 44 joined to the frame 40 and traversed by the shaft. 41.
Engaged with the wheel 43 there are provided pinions 45, for example toothed, integral with 6 'shafts 46 suitably journalled in the frame 42 at 47.
At their lower ends, these shafts 46 carry drive members, for example angle pinions 48, in engagement with other drive members, for example angle pinions 49, made integral with each other. trees 50 and 51.
AT the outer ends of these shafts are mounted drive members, for example chain wheels, 52 and 53.
On the other hand the frame 42 carries, by means of oscillating levers 54, suitably articulated on the axes 55 of the frame 42, a certain number of friction members 56 constituted by cylindrical rollers, which are suitably fixed on shafts 57 ,
The apparatus shown comprises two of these rollers, and on their supporting shafts 57 are mounted, at the opposite ends of the frame 42, drive members corresponding to the members 52 and 53, such as the chain wheels 58 and 59.
Chains 60 are mounted on the corresponding chain wheels and the operation is understood as follows,
When the shaft 41 is driven in rotation, it drives with it the rotating frame 42, and by the engagement of the wheel 43 and the pinions 45, the latter and the associated members are controlled in rotation, determining the rotation. around their
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
YY axes of the friction members 56. As these members are simultaneously driven in rotation around the axis XX of the shaft 41, each time a friction tool is passed, the formation by the first of the above rotations of scratches is obtained. that b and by the second scratches such as a on the work surface, these ray- sohematically for the one ures overlapping each other, as indicated / of the friction members in figure 8.
It goes without saying, and it emerges from this figure, that the axes YY around which the friction tools 56 rotate can occupy other angular positions than those shown, and for example form angles other than 90 with the spokes. passing through their midpoints: In addition the YY axes of the various friction tools could receive different angular positions,
Of course also, the arrangement of the polishing device may comprise a number of rubbing tools other than two.
For example, in FIG. 9, there is schematically represented a polishing device comprising four rubbing tools 56, these tools being arranged at the ends of intersecting diameters, and in FIG. 10, rubbing tools 56 in number. of six are distributed circularly in a substantially uniform manner.
In each case, as for the device of FIGS. 6 to 8, the angular position of the YY axes, represented as perpendicular to the radius passing through the middle of the corresponding axis, could be modified, depending on the particular effect that is being taken. desire to achieve.
It is also of course understood that the mechanical arrangements provided for the relatively fixed 40 and mobile 42 frames, as well as for the transmission of rotational movements to the frame 42 and to the rubbing tools, are only examples, and that more than

1.- Improvements in the grinding and polishing of hard materials, such as glass., And similar materials, using tools or rubbing members established in the form of revolving bodies and driven simultaneously, in rotation. on themselves and -in displacement on the surface of the work, which consist in forming at each passage of a tool at a point of the worked surface, a group of scratches due to the rotation of the tool or member rubbing on itself. and a group of scratches, oriented differently from the first, due to the movement of the tool or member rubbing on the surface of the work.
2.- Improvements according to claim 1, charac- terized in that the movement of the tool or member rubbing on the work is carried out in a direction which does not agree with that of the movement that the machine would perform. 'tool rubbing because of its rotation around its own axis, it is with the general notmale to say that .ne: aotna.ide-.rpaef to the axis around which the tool or the friction organ is driven in rotation on itself.
3.- Improvements according to claim 1 or claim 2, characterized in that the displacement of 6 + 4 'é - the tool or member rubbing on the work is a rectilinear or curvilinear movement, or comprises straight portions and curvilinear portions.
4.- Improvements according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the movement of the tool or friction member is circular, 5.- Improvements according to one of the preceding claims, characterized by the causes the tool or friction member to be established as a conical or cylindrical body of revolution
