<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Fig. 19, en étant une vue en plan.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

"Improvements to shuttles without bobbin for looms". The invention brings improvements to shuttles without bobbin or weft passers of the kind described in patent applications filed on May 22, 1933 and June 13, 1933 respectively. these improvements allowing the weft guards thus perfected to also be used in all types of trades.
In ordinary looms, with aveo oanette shuttles, we know that, when it passes through the crowd, that is to say through the free space left between the comb, the facure and the top layers and From below the divided warp ply it happens more or less often that the shuttle encounters chain fi @ obstructing the shed and belonging to the top ply or to the bottom ply. but these threads are found to be separated on either side by the point of the shuttle.
In looms with canless shuttles of the type described
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
in the aforementioned applications, in which the shed is of very small dimensions, these floating threads constitute a serious drawback, given that the shuttle without a bobbin, or weft pass, does not include a point, pals present, a, u contrary to its place ,, a slit separating the two branches of the jumper which constitutes it, slit intended to receive, at the entrance into the shed, the weft thread to be passed, so that the floating warp threads which penetrate in the slot are cut or broken.
The object of the present invention is to obviate this drawback and consists in: a) Arranging the end of this type of shuttle in the form of a jumper, such that the floating wires are separated by the shuttle itself, when its passage; of course when it comes to shuttles circulating alternately through the crowd, the two ends of these shuttles will be similarly fitted out. b) To present the weft thread stretched through the entrance of the shed and intended to be taken and driven by the shuttle, in an arrangement such that it is not moved away on either side of the shuttle, as are the floating warp threads.
This arrangement of the end of the shuttles without a bobbin, of the type described in the aforementioned applications, in combination with the arrangement of the weft thread at the entrance to the shed, oons-, titue., With other secondary improvements contributing to ensure perfect operation., the object of the present invention, which is hereinafter described and shown sohéma .. tically in the accompanying drawings, shown applied according to three

embodiments, other embodiments which can of course be implemented depending on the combination.

Fig. 17, is a side view of the shuttle turned over as in FIG. 15, showing the face facing the facure.
Fig. 18, is an end view of the shuttle, similar to FIG. 9, showing a variant of a device for guiding the weft.
Fig. 19, being a plan view.
As regards the first embodiment (Figures 1 to 7) the shuttle is formed by a body 1, preferably metallic, of trapezoidal section, of which 2 and 3 are the faces intended to come into contact with the layers of warp threads forming the shed, 4 being the small side intended to face the facure 6, and 5 the large side intended to face the comb 7.
One of the ends of this shuttle is split over a certain length at 8, along the width direction so as to divide the body 1 into two branches 8 and 10, the bottom of this slot comprising a knife blade 11, removable. or not, destiny born to cut the weft thread.
The large side 5 has a wide groove 12 in which is housed the weft retaining clamp, consisting of two flexible straight blades 15, arranged in parallel and in elastic contact with one another in the middle of the groove. 12, the ends of these blades being curved towards the walls of said groove, in which they are engaged so as to ensure the fixing of the clamp thus formed, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
elastic contact of the branches which can be reinforced by means of elastic counter-blades 13 'fixed in the same way, this clamp allowing the reception and the maintenance, between its connecting the weft thread, as well as the passage of the blade of release, who,
on arrival of the shuttle after its passage through the crowd by penetrating and passing between the two branches 13, releases the frame which they were holding, this arrangement being identical, both for shuttles traveling in one direction and for passing ones alternative.
It should be noted that this elastic gripper 13 is significantly longer than required for the weft gripping, in order to release said weft without tension in order to avoid twists due to its withdrawal in the shed caused by by the very elasticity of the thread.
Thus constituted, in accordance with the shuttles described in the aforementioned patents of the applicant, the arrangement of one or both ends of these shuttles, with a view to separating the floating warp threads, is characterized, according to the invention , by the fact that the rune end of the branches of the rider%, 9 for example, ends in the form of a beak 14, the point of which is slightly overhanging, as shown at 15, so. go beyond the plane of the slot 8.
which is thus masked, the face ex. 3 'of this spout having a rounded or bevelled cut surface connecting to the flat surface 3 of the body 1 of the boat, the end of the other branch of the rider, 10 for example, simply having its outer face 2 'similarly having a rounded or bevelled cut surface connecting to the flat surface 2 of the body 1 of the shuttle.
The ends of the shuttles being thus arranged, we realize that the floating threads, either of the divided sheet 16, or
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
of that 17. coming into contact, during the passage of a shuttle in the shed, either with the spout 14 with rounded surface 3 'of the, branohe 9. or with the rounded surface 2' of the branohe 10, will slide along of these rounded surfaces and will thus be deflected and brought on either side of the shuttle, these floating wires not being able to penetrate into the slot 8, due to the obstacle presented by the overhanging point 15 from beo 14.
With regard to the arrangement allowing the thread, stretched at the entrance to the crowd and across it, to be caught by the shuttles despite the arrangement of their tending ends. to remove any warp yarn in their path, this is characterized by the fact that the portion of weft yarn 18 is stretched between a first point consisting of the facing point 6 'or a point 6 "located in the crowd, in front of this point, and a second point which may be constituted, in this case, by the eyelet 19, located at a certain distance from the edge in front of the crowd.
By this arrangement the shuttle comes into contact with this stretched portion of weft thread 18, before it enters the shed, this contact taking place, thanks to the oblique position of the weft thread thus stretched, at a point indicated at a, located on the side of the ridge of the opposite slope 2 "of the bevelled part 2t, slope which is itself bevelled and which brings the wire 18 into the slot 8 without coming into contact with the point 15 of the spout 14 of the branohe 9 near which the said thread passes.
Considering that it is preferable that the starting point of the weft is situated in front of the point of facure 6 ', at a point 6 ", this one can be oonstituted for example by the bottom of a notch 20 made. at the end of an elastic blade 21 fixed
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
to a fixed part of the frame of the loom, the first warp or selvedge son of the shed passing through this eneoohe, the edges 20 'of which are curved towards the facure 6. in order to prevent the exaggerated opening of said son of delivered, so that the end of the pick cut.
which is inserted, does not tend to escape. said elastic blade 21 being pushed back with each stroke of the leaf, against the facade then resuming its forward position, by virtue of its own elasticity as soon as the leaf recedes,
As regards the second embodiment (Figures 8 to 12), it remains in accordance with the object of the invention in this sense, that we find, as for the first, the combination of the arrangement of the ends of the shuttles with the particular arrangement of the weft stretched at the entrance of the crowd.
The characteristic resides in that the groove 12 is arranged obliquely with respect to the median plane of the shuttle, and in such a way that the branch 9 has, on the side 5 forming the comb, a height approximately equal to half of the total height of this said side, which brings the point 15 of the beak
14 extending said branch 9 and without having to overhang said tip, in the same relative position as that of the spout of the first embodiment, the oblique position of the slot
12 making it possible to eliminate the internal bevelling 2 "from the end of the branohe 10.
With regard to the third embodiment (figures
13 to 17), this also remains in accordance with the object of the invention in the sense that we find, as for the other two, the combination of the arrangement of the ends of the shuttles with the particular deposition of the weft stretched at the entrance of the shed. The characteristic resides in that the end of the branch 9 which comprises the spout 14, not only comprises the bevel-
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
outer floor 3 ', but also an opposite bevel 3 ", the end of the other branch having the outer bevels
2 'and inside 2 ",
With regard to Figures 18 and 19, which approximate the second embodiment (Figures 8 to 12),
these represent a device making it possible to move the point of tension of the weft, in front of the facure, no longer in the shed, but outside the extension thereof, this device consisting of a finger 22, driven by a determined reciprocating movement which allows it to press on the weft, before the arrival of the. shuttle, and thus place it in position approximately in the axis of the inclined groove 12. the weft, when seized by the shuttle, then escaping this finger 22, when it is inserted into the shed; in this case the great obliqueness of the weft thread 18 is no longer essential.
When the shuttle does not have a cutting blade, a cutting blade is added to finger 22 which is placed between the weft thread and the selvedge.
It is understood that, without departing from the spirit of the invention, changes, improvements and additions could be made, just as the use of equivalent means could be envisaged.
For example, with regard to the first embodiment (fig. 1 to 7) and the third embodiment (fig. 13 to
17) the groove 12 could be disposed obliquely with respect to the median plane of the shuttle, as in the second embodiment. It could be the same for slot 8 and for point 6 ".
Also, with regard to the second embodiment (fig. 8 to a), the groove 12 could be offset further, in order to make it emerge on the face 2, in the immediate vicinity.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
on side 5, the obliquity of this groove may or may not be increased, since it is possible to bend this groove slightly in order to find its place more easily, the release slat then affeotant the same elbow *
Likewise, as regards the shuttles comprising two grooves, it is understood that the ends of these shuttles can also be arranged accordingly, according to the spirit of the invention.
As regards the shape of the ends of the shuttles, it is of course also possible that it may result from the combination between them, of the shapes recommended in the various embodiments described.
Finally, in the case of use of shuttles established according to any one of the embodiments described above or others, in circular looms or certain other p, it is obvious that these will be constituted by a body 1 having a shape no longer rectilinear, but quite curvilinear.
