gulaire dans le cas particulier d'un système bielle-manivelle ayant la bielle d'une longueur infinie et exerçant un effort constant;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

PATENT OF INVENTION Torque variator of the connecting rod-crank system and its applications.
The present invention relates to a mechanical device allowing de'faire to vary the torque of a connecting rod-crank system with respect to an axis without modifying the tangential effont.

gular in the particular case of a connecting rod-crank system having the connecting rod of infinite length and exerting a constant force;
Fig. 9 is a graph showing the general appearance of the variation of the torque as a function of the angular displacements for the connecting rod-crank system provided with a torque variator and without the torque variator.
The general arrangement of the components of a torque converter is as follows.
The mechanism consists essentially of two connecting rod-crank systems 2, 3, 4 and 5, the torque of which undergoes variations imposed by the configuration of the components. This transformed torque is transmitted to the receiver shaft I coupled directly or with the aid of a transmission suitable for any machine using the mechanical energy developed by the connecting rods-cranks.
In the accompanying drawing, this transmission is represented by the gear 6. The three bearings supporting the shafts, 1, 22 and 23 are fixed with respect to each other, in other words they form part of the same frame.
The shaft 1 is actuated by two sliding coaches such as 7 ′ and 8. These two coaches are generally keyed on the shaft I; but in a particular case one of them can drive the shaft I by means of any transmission, such as the chains 9 and 10 and the pinions II, 12 and 13, shown in phantom in Fig.2.
In this particular case, the shaft I stops at the chainline 14 and the driver 8 is keyed on another shaft which starts from, from the chainline 15.
The sliding coaches 7 and 8 are provided with slides such as 16 and 17 which can move all along the sliding coaches 7 and 8.
The slides 15 and 17 xunt fitted with axes such as 18 and
19. The latter being mounted in the cranks 20 and 21 secured respectively to the shafts 22 and 23, are driven by a rotational movement with the drive shafts 22 and 23.
The trees 22 and 23 'are: parallel to the tree I and, genetal-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
ment, are coaxial. But for a particular case, it is possible to mount them along two parallel axes.
As regards the axes I8 and 19, their assemblies may be of the most varied nature. Fig. 3, Fig. 4, Fig. 5 'and Fig. 6 show by way of example these axes mounted fixed in the guides and idlers in the cranks 20 and 21 and vice versa. the same figures show the mounting of its axes in the same plane as the axis of the sliding coaches and in a parallel plane. These slides can also be mounted male or female depending on the section of the sliding coaches.
Cranks such as 20 and 21 are generally directly driven by two crank systems such as 3 and 4 attached to shafts 22 and 23. But in a particular case they can be driven by any transmission such as pinions 24 and 25 and chain 26. These three members are shown very schematically in phantom in fig.I.
Cranks 3 and 4 can be keyed onto their shafts with the same angle as the corresponding cranks such as 21 and 20, but for some special cases they may have an offset with respect to the corresponding cranks such as 21 and 20.
In the case where the connecting rods such as 20, and 21 are controlled by means of a transmission in the type of pinions 24 and 25 and of the chain 26, it is obvious that the movement of the cranks, thus offset such as 32 and which can be multiple must be synchronized with the movement of the connecting rod 21 which corresponds to it.
Regarding a certain offset useful for certain particular cases, the preceding remark on this subject applies perfectly.
The operation of the torque converter is as follows:
Suppose for the sake of clarity that the configuration of the mechanism and the orientation of the offset between shafts I and 23 are in accordance with the drawing in Fig. I, consider the left half of the circle described by the crank 2,3. In most of this half-corcle the distance between axis 19 and axis I is greater than the distance from axis 19 and axis 23. We therefore find that
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
in most of the sector considered the torque with respect to axis I is greater than with respect to axis 23? On the other hand, the angular speed of the sliding driver 7 is lower than that of the crank 21.
On the other hand in the part of the circle described by the crank 2 the distance between the axes 19 and 1, is smaller than between the axes 19 and 23. So the torque is lower compared to the a - xe 1 than by relative to the axis 23 and the angular speed of the sliding drive 7 is greater than that of the crank 21.
The left part of the circle considered corresponds to the useful travel of the connecting rod acting on the crank 2, 3 and the right part of this circle corresponds to the return movement of the connecting rod.
The general shape of the curve of the angular speed variation of the crank 21 as a function of the angular speed of the shaft I is given by the harmonic 27 of FIG. 7. For this harmonic as well as for all the other curves in Fig. 7 and Fig. 8 and 9, the origin of the abscissa corresponds to the point of intersection of the horizontal diameter with the circle having for center the axis I and to the left of this axis I. The value of the abscissas are the angular displacements of the shaft I in degrees counted in the opposite direction of the hand of a watch. On the other hand, these curves do not relate to any particular case and only indicate the general appearance of the functions.
By analyzing the movement of other parts of the torque converter and assuming, for the sake of clarity, that the sliding coaches 7 and 8 are offset by 180, we will have as a curve representing the variations in the angular speed of the torque. crank 20 the 28 harmonic of the Eig. 7.
The straight line represents the average angular speed of two coaches, therefore that of shaft 1.
Given, on the other hand, that the law of variation of the tangential force for the most elementary case of a connecting rod of infinite magnitude is a cosine harmonic represented by the curve be 29 of 1 a Fig. 8.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Since, in addition, the length of the radius of a crank, ordinary is constant the variation of the torque of the connecting rod of infinite length is also a cosine harmonic plotted at a suitable scale in Fig. 9 in 30.
This harmonic 30 therefore represents the torque due to the tangential force in the case of an ordinary connecting rod-crank system, such as the torque of the crank connecting rod 2,3 and considered to be applied to the shaft 1. To draw a analogous graph of the variations in torque due to the action of the variator, that is to say the torque generated by the crank rod 2,3 and transmitted by the variator to the receiver shaft 1, it is necessary to take into account the configuration of the mechanism.
The general shape of this curve is drawn approximately as FIG. 9 at 31 and very substantially on the same scale as curve 30. Curve 31 has its point of intersection with the abscissa a little before curve 30 because crank 3 reaches bottom dead center a little before the the milk receiver shaft performs a quarter-circle rotational movement.
It is easy to notice that the torque variator thus described has two interesting qualities: on the one hand, it allows, without increasing the force of the connecting rod, to develop a greater torque in a sector which is the most interesting for the action of the connecting rod. ; on the other hand, it makes it possible for the same average angular speed to see an instantaneous speed of the crank in the useful working sector that is greater than in the return sector of the connecting rod. These two qualities are such as to increase the power developed by the connecting rods without increasing the average angular speed.
The torque variator is favorable for any connecting rod-crank system capable of withstanding the variations in angular speed, the shape of which is represented by curve 27 in FIG. 7.
It is designed for the most varied applications such as: cycles, three-carriers, patient cars, canoes, planes, pumps, reciprocating motors, of all kinds, etc.
