<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The invention relates to a power transmission unit which is designed to drive a mechanism of the kind requiring a motor torque which is maximum when the mechanism is taken from rest and continuously decreases as the speed of the mechanism increases.
Examples of this kind of mechanism are self-propelled vehicles, for example iron-liner locomotives, and the power transmission unit according to the present invention can be used with special advantage to drive such locomotives.
Motors are known having an output torque / speed characteristic such that the output torque is zero when the motor is at rest, rises to a maximum for the minimum operating speed of the motor and then falls continuously when the speed of the motor. increases.
An example of such an engine is an internal combustion engine machine which is overloaded to a pressure which reaches its maximum when the driving machine is at its minimum operating speed, the machine being provided with a regulator controlling its fuel injection. fuel to give the torque / speed characteristic described.
Belgian patent 4800467 describes a power transmission block in which two such machines are connected to the sun wheels of a differential gear transmission by fluid variable fill couplings, the planetary carrier of the gear being used to drive a mechanism control of the type described, and each sun wheel being associated with a unidirectional device which allows its rotation in one direction but not in the other, The said specification also describes a power transmission installation comprising two of these blocks, the door -planetary gear of each block being arranged to drive a sun wheel of another differential gear, the planetary carrier of which drives the driven mechanism.
To increase the torque at low speed of such a power transmission unit, it has previously been proposed to insert torque multiplier means between each motor and the associated sun wheels of the differential gear connecting two motors. Thus, Belgian patent 501,024 describes a power transmission unit in which the interposed torque multiplier means are differential epicyclic gears, each defining two speed ratios in the driving element, that is to say - say the motor, and Individually driven, that is to say the associated sun wheel, these ratios being approximately 2: 1 and 1: 1.
It has now been found that a power transmission unit of the type referred to in Belgian patent 501,024 can be more easily constructed if the power multiplier means are provided between the planetary carrier of the differential gear connecting the motors and the final control to the mechanism to be driven by the power transmission unit, instead of being mounted between the motors and the sun wheels of this differential gear.
The present invention is consequently an improvement or a modification of that which is the subject of Belgian patent 480,467 and consists in providing a variable speed transmission, having at least two transmission ratios, between the planetary carrier of the differential gear and the final control of the mechanism to be driven by the power transmission block.
The variable speed transmission is preferably of the constant mesh type and includes one or more unidirectional devices and one or more yieldable clutches (i.e. electromagnetic; variable fluid fill or friction clutches) which Connect the transmission control to the final drive so that the transmission ratio can be changed with little or no interruption in the output torque.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In low speed locomotives such as those of the% 1% born to shunting, the change in the transmission is almost invariably coupled when the locomotive is stationary and, in this case, at least one of the unidirectional devices and at least one. friction clutches which have just been discussed can be omitted and replaced by simple claw clutches to connect the motor gear to the final drive, as described in more detail below.
Another feature of the present invention is the omission, compared to the arrangement described in Belgian patent 480,467, of the unidirectional device associated with one of the motors. Such. This arrangement requires that the motor without a unidirectional device be always used at start-up and also makes it preferable to provide some simple hand-operated device for locking the differential sun wheel associated with that motor in the event of a fault with that motor, to prevent the rotation in the opposite direction die this sun wheel by the other motor.
Such an arrangement, which avoids the cost of a unidirectional device, is preferable with regard to low power locomotives such as shunting locomotives which have only two motors. This feature of omitting one of the unidirectional devices does not necessarily have to be combined with the feature of providing a variable speed transmission between the planetary carrier of the differential gear and the driven mechanism.
Hence, from another point of view, the present invention is an improvement to or a modification to that forming the subject of Belgian Patent No. 480,467 and consists in omitting one of the unidirectional braking devices described as acting on each wheel. solar differential gear.
Note that a power transmission unit according to the present invention may include more than one pair of motors as indicated in specification no 480.467, and in this case the variable speed transmission is preferably connected directly to the final drive, that is to say is located between the third differential of Figure 1 of patent 480,467 and the final drive; although it is of course possible to employ the arrangement of the present invention with respect to each pair of motors, a variable speed transmission then being provided for each pair of motors and arranged to drive each sun wheel of the third differential gear.
The invention is further illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: - Figure 1 shows a schematic sectional view of part of the transmission gear of a power transmission unit, which incorporates the present invention and suitable for use in a locomotive, and - Figure 2 shows a schematic sectional view of a transmission suitable for a locomotive used exclusively for shunting.
Referring now to figure 1, two motors which are not shown but whose general arrangement with respect to a gearbox 4 is indicated by the reference signs A and B, drive, by means of fluid couplings variable fill, not shown, shafts 1 and 2 respectively. The final command to the wheels of the locomotive is taken from a final drive gear F.
The shaft 2 is provided with a unidirectional device 18 to prevent the reversal of its direction of rotation .; this unidirectional device is of the type known under the name of “Legge synchro coupling” and comprises firstly a claw clutch mounted on a helical ribbed part of a shaft 2 and operating by means of the combined action of the inertia of the claw coupling and the helical ribs.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
A device of this type is described in more detail in Belgian patent 488,809.
A differential gear having a housing or a planet carrier 8 is mounted coaxially with the shaft 1; on this shaft is keyed a sun wheel or input gear wheel of the differential gear.
A sleeve 25, surrounding one end of the shaft 1 door, fixed on it,
The other sun wheel or input gear wheel 9 of the differential gear. The gears 5 and 9 are connected by means of a number of pairs of planetary wheels arranged symmetrically about the axis of the shaft 1. For the sake of clarity, only one of these pairs of planetary wheels 6.7 is shown. The planetary wheel 6 meshes with the toothed wheel 5 and with the planetary wheel 7, and the planetary wheel 7 meshes with the wheel 9.
The planetary carrier 8 is provided with an extension sleeve 19 on which a gear wheel 14 is keyed. A gear 20 is also formed at the periphery of the planetary carrier 8.
The toothed wheels 14 and 20 mesh with the wheels 15 and 16 respectively and these two last mentioned toothed wheels are mounted on a shaft 3 carrying the final drive toothed wheel F. The toothed wheel 15, when in operation, is connected to the shaft 3 by means of a unidirectional device 26 of the type described in Belgian patent 488,809 and the toothed wheel 16, when in operation, is connected to the shaft 3 by means of a metal friction clutch on metal already known in marine transmissions and in transmissions for locomotives.
A gear wheel 10 attached to the shaft 2 drives the sleeve 25 via a gear train 11, 13, 21, the wheel 21 being attached to the sleeve 25. The gear ratio between the wheels 16 and 20 is 1: 1 and between wheels 15 and 14 it is 2: 1 and between wheels 13 and 21 it is 1.5: 1.
The wheels 13 and 21 thus provide means by which the planetary carrier 8 is driven by the motor B at a torque ratio different from that at which the planetary carrier 8 is driven by the motor A.
When it is desired to control a locomotive, the clutch 27 is disengaged so that the toothed wheel 16 is free on the shaft 3, and the engine 2 is started and the coupling is filled with suitable fluid so that the shaft 1 and with it the toothed wheel 5 turn. The reverse rotation of the wheel 9, due to the action of the load on the final drive wheel F, is prevented by means of the one-way coupling 18, in fact the toothed wheel 5 turns the housing 8. in the same direction at half speed and with double the torque of motor A.
The arrangement is such that the gear wheel 15 rotates in a direction which locks it to the shaft 3 by means of the one-way device 26 so that the movement of the planetary carrier 8 is transmitted to the shaft 3 by the intermediate of another reduction gear 2: 1 constituted by the toothed wheels 14 and 15. In this way, the shaft 3 receives the torque from the motor A with a quadruple torque multiplication.
Now start engine B and fill the coupling with the correct fluid and when the torque of engines A and B equalizes - free, which assumes that engine A runs faster than engine B due to the ratio transmission between the toothed wheels 13 and 21 and the torque / speed characteristics of the motors, the gear 9 begins to rotate and the speed of the planetary carrier 8 then increases to a speed slightly greater than that of the two motors and the command transmitted to shaft 3 then takes place at a speed which is slightly greater than the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
half the speed of the motors and a torque which is slightly less than twice the sum of the torques of the two motors.
When a suitable speed of the locomotive has been reached, the coupling 27 is engaged to connect the toothed wheel 16 to the shaft 3.
The result of this operation is to slow down the housing of the differential 8 and to cause the disengagement of the unidirectional device 26. There is consequently no discontinuity in the torque delivered to the shaft 4 when passing from the gear. low to high gear since low gear drives until it is passed by high gear. The speed of shaft 3 is now doubled and the torque applied to it is halved compared to the speed and torque achieved when the machine is driven by gear 15.
The simple change of speed in the direction of slowing down supposes the disengagement of clutch 27 and the movement will then be transmitted to the shaft 3 as soon as its speed falls below that of the toothed wheel 15.
Referring now to figure 2 where the reference numbers are the same as in figure 1, the one-way device 26 and the clutch 27 are replaced here by a double claw coupling of which a claw coupling element 17 is keyed on the shaft 3 and can be moved in one direction to cooperate with the toothed wheel 15 and in the other direction to cooperate with the toothed wheel 16. Thus, in a manner well known in the construction of spur gears, one or the other of the toothed wheels 15 and 16 can be connected to the shaft 3 while the other remains free.
When the locomotive pulls the maximum load intended, the claw clutch is placed to connect the toothed wheel 15 to the shaft 3, and a torque reaching slightly less than twice the sum of the torques of the two engines can be achieved as shown. above by first causing motor B to drive gear 9. When such a locomotive runs unloaded or lightly loaded, it is possible to have the claw clutch member 17 in mesh with the- toothed wheel 16. In this arrangement, the driving process is the same as when the movement is transmitted by the toothed wheel 15 except that at each stage the speed of the shaft 3 is double its speed at the stage. corresponding when driven by toothed wheel 15.
In the two arrangements described above, it will be noted that the one-way clutch 18 can be arranged to act directly on any element of the gear connecting the shaft 2 to the toothed wheel 9 and need not necessarily be mounted on tree -2 as shown.
The transmission shown in Figures 1 and 2 can be modified using any form of permanent mesh variable speed gear to drive the shaft through the planetary carrier 8 instead of the particular two-speed gear described. An epicyclic transmission is an example of such an alternative transmission.
Other variable speed transmissions, preferably two speed transmissions can also be provided between the shaft 3 and the mechanism to be driven by the power transmission block to give further torque multiplication if desired. in the arrangements described above a locomotive can be provided with two power transmission blocks according to the present invention, for example as shown in figure 1, and each block can be arranged to drive only a particular group of wheels on track, for example a bogie; such a locomotive may have two transmission blocks and two bogies each of which is driven by only one power transmission block.
