  "ELECTROLYTE FOR LEAD ACCUMULATORS".

In patent No. 345849 it is stated that it is necessary to add from time to time to the electrolyte the quantity of phosphoric acid lost during operation. It is not convenient to thus supplement the electrolyte by pouring an aqueous solution of phosphoric acid into the element because of the measure of the quantity of liquid poured; what a lot of us-

most elements failed to do so. According to the invention, this inconvenience is avoided by taking phosphoric acid in the solid state, in the form of regular pieces of determined weight and little or no hygrosoopic, and by introducing it into the element, into the electrolyte from which it is dissolved.

By simply counting these pieces one can thus conveniently determine the amount of phosphoric acid set by Patent No. 345849. The pieces may have, for example, the shape of rods, tablets, balls or cubes. They are preferably formed by solid metaphosporic acid or by metal phosphates which do not harm the accumulator, such as calcium, barium, magnesium, aluminum, zino, cadmium, lead. .

However, it is not at all necessary to add to the orthophosphoric acid, to make it solid, the quantities of these oxides necessary to form the neutral salts; on the contrary, as tests have shown, substantially smaller quantities of these metal oxides are sufficient, so that the pieces are thus formed by the mixture of an acid salt of orthophos phoric acid or of such a salt with free acid. For example, 700 g can be diluted. orthophosphoric acid with a specific weight of 1.75 with 150 to 200 gr. of zino oxide by gently heating and compress into tablets after cooling. These pieces can be used not only to supplement the phosphoric acid content as described, but also to prepare the fresh electrolyte containing phosphoric acid.

In this case, for example, they are placed from the start at the bottom of small transportable elements intended to be filled, outside the factory, with pure and extensive sulfuric acid.
