Description

NATHAN FALLEL,
OF- DENVER, COLORADO, ASSIG'rlQOB. TO COOK RAILWAY SIGNAL COIMTANY, 01 DENVER, COLORADO, A CORPORATION OF COLORADO.
STORAGE-BATTERY COMPOUND.
1T0 Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, NATHAN FALLEK, citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Storage-Battery Compounds; and I do declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description 0 the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to-which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a composition of matter forming a compound for use in storage batteries.
My improved asbestos and sulfuric acid, to which may be v added a small proportion of sodium silicate.
It is preferred to employ the sodium silicate, though a good compound may be made by dispensing altogether with this ingredient.
The asbestos, which preferably consists of the white or bleached variety, is mixed with distilled water and boiled, preferably for one hour approximately, forthe purpose of' removing all the impurities. This is a washoperation and the asbestos is wrung out of the water and has evaporated. The sulfuric acid is poured into distilled water until the specific gravity of the solution is 1.180, approximately, according to the hydrometer test.
As far as the specific gravity is concerned,
a it must be understood that no precise statement can be made as it may vary within considerable limits and particularly at different elevations.
The sodium silicate, which is in the form 1 of a powder,.is poured into distilled water until the specific gravity of the solution is raised to 1. 180 approximately. This, however, may vary within a considerable range,
Specification of Letters Patent.
composition consists of dried until all of the water Patented'Dec. 5, 1916.

as heretofore stated, when speaking of the specific gravity of the sulfuric acid. The sodium silicate is slowly delivered to the water which is rapidly stirred in order to thoroughly dissolve the said substance.
now have a quantity of cleansed asbestos, a quantity of dilute sulfuric acid-and a quantity of sodium'silicate solution, which may be mixed in the following proportions:-
Oleansed asbestos, one pound, sulfuric acid, approximately sixteen pounds and sodium silicate, two ounces; or, as heretofore stated, the sodium silicate may be dispensed with, if desired. Combining these ingredients, they are thoroughly mixed when in a cold state. The cells of the battery are then filled in the usual manner, that is tosay, by filling the spaces between the grids with the compound which has the consistency of jelly, making an approximately dry battery. The composition may be termed a pulp electrolytei In referring to the hydrometer test for determining specific gravity in the foregoing specifications, it is assumed that the specific gravity of distilled water is'1.000.
Having thus described my invention, what NATHAN FALLEK.
