<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The invention is based on the known method for the continuous production of
Soft foam strands with a rectangular cross-section, a foamable polyurethane reaction mixture being freely foamed and where the free surface of the foam is applied during the foaming process
Reaction mixture a gas-permeable layer is applied.
The well-known process owes its existence to the fact that when producing
Flexible foam strands produce an upwardly convex curved surface of the free foaming process
Block strand occurs, with which foam mass adjoining the curved surface accumulates as waste or as a part of inferior quality during further use or when the block is dismantled. The curvature is created on the one hand by the lateral gluing of the strand flanks to the covering inlays and on the other hand by the formation of a firm skin on the upper side, which thereby stretches in an arc shape.
This unfavorable dome formation is avoided with the disadvantages set out of the same by means of the method described at the beginning, because the support and cover counteract the dome formation and level the block surface in the sense of leveling.
According to the German Offenlegungsschrift 1804725 a method is known to foam sheet-like structures or laminates from curable plastic materials, which are passed through a thickness and / or width regulating nozzle and brought together on one or more sides with carrier or cover sheets, which after the hardening process are then applied to the Product remain and strengthen it. According to this process, however, only thin products or products that are low in comparison to their width can be produced, since at greater heights the plastic no longer cures properly. The method is also not suitable for flexible foam block strands, since the force of the regulating slot provided at the beginning of the foaming zone would make the sensitive foam structure inhomogeneous.
If, on the other hand, the slot were arranged shortly before the end of the foaming zone of a flexible foam block strand, the foam mixture in this cross-sectional area would for the most part have solidified to such an extent that the thickness or cross-section would no longer have to be regulated.
It has also been proposed to produce flexible foam strands with a rectangular cross-section by the method described above underneath a slatted frame or louvre-like cover, to place nonwovens, plastic films or tough, gelatinous layers of mass on the foaming foam, which should prevent the still viscous foam mixture from passing through the cover to penetrate and pollute them. In addition, the risk of the cover sinking into the foam mixture should be excluded.
It has also been proposed to cover the support itself again with an impermeable shielding membrane which is intended to slide under the cover and prevent the foam mixture from wetting the cover at all. As a result of the gas-permeable layer, these two proposals ensure an outflow of the gases produced during foaming, u. betw. both in the upward direction through the support and in the directions upward on the one hand and laterally under the shielding strip on the other.
Both proposals have the disadvantage that fiber fleece or other coverings are expensive and have to be removed from the soft surface again after the complete foaming to form the foam block strand; Due to the strong adhesion, this leads to damage or destruction of the support or the surface. The shielding membrane, which consists, for example, of a soda kraft paper, also leads to further expenditure, since this is wetted or soaked by the foam mixture during use and cannot be used for repetitions after foaming once.
Since the processes are continuous, carried out in day and night shifts, the cost-effectiveness of the process requires the elimination of the alleged disadvantages and the specification of a way that makes it possible to produce flexible foam block strands with a rectangular cross section more cost-effectively than before.
The object of the invention is achieved, based on the method described at the beginning, in that, according to the invention, a gas-permeable, flexible foam web is applied to the surface of the reaction mixture before the skin of the resulting flexible foam strand is formed and is left on at least until the reaction mixture is completely foamed.
In the new process has been found to be particularly useful, polyether or

A particular advantage of the method proposed according to the invention in the context of its practical application is that the support can also be left on the upper side of the foamed flexible foam strand block, that is, its cross-section is enlarged as if it were to be produced from the outset with the enlarged dimension would.
When using a shielding strip introduced between the support and the cover, the shielding strip can finally be used several times in succession by choosing the support made of a flexible foam material.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
With the method according to the invention, it is thus possible to produce high-quality soft foam strands of equivalent or even superior quality produced according to the conventional methods with significantly reduced technical effort and considerable cost savings.
Compared to the known method mentioned at the outset, the new method leads to a number of
Advantages, among which are:
1. A foam sheet used as a support is much cheaper than a nonwoven fabric or even one
Plastic film.
2. The foam web used as a support can remain on the soft foam strand and be used as well, since it can be kept essentially identical to the material of the foam block strand and thereby "grows together" with its upper side. So there is an additional cost advantage because the overlay does not need to be pulled off and rolled up. Remaining materially heterogeneous foam webs on the foam strand block would be insignificant if its subsequent further processing were thereby disrupted, since during its further processing the interfering zone could be peeled off if it is not possible to replace it with suitable ones
Applications, such as flocculation to use.
3. With the appropriate coordination of the foam sheet, it can be used as a shielding sheet
Masking paper can be used several times or, if necessary, even replaced by an endless belt, since the foam sheet used as a support allows the outflowing gases to penetrate and also allows the viscous foam mixture to partially penetrate, but does not allow it to pass through to the top of the foam sheet. This can be used to be able to completely dispense with the cover paper as a shielding sheet if the underside of the slatted or louvre-like cover is suitable, for example particularly easy to slide. This approach contributes to a further reduction in costs.
4. A major advantage of using a foam sheet as a support is that soft foam strand manufacturers who work according to the method are able to
Manufacture or cut foam strands of any thickness for the requirements in our own manufacturing facility. According to known methods must be used as a support plastic films or
Fiber fleeces from other manufacturers can be drawn at increased cost.
The method according to the invention will be described below with reference to a schematically illustrated system suitable for example for its execution. The figures show: FIG. 1 a side view of the installation and FIG. 2 a modified embodiment of the same.
In Fig. 1, an insert --11--, for example made of paper, is placed on an endlessly circulating conveyor belt --10--, which is continuously pulled off by a transport roller - 12 -. From laterally arranged unwinding rolls -13-on the other hand, deposits --14-- run off, forming a U-shaped, open-topped channel, which are moved linearly at the speed of rotation of the conveyor belt - 10 -.

According to the invention, a sheet made of a gas-permeable, flexible foam material is used as the support.
The cover --26-- is essentially free-floating on the shielding sheet --24--. Together with its holder --25 - it follows a vertical component of movement of the foaming mixture.
