Process for the production of colored, crosslinkable or crosslinked copolymers
Transparent colored polymeric compositions have hitherto been obtained by dissolving a dye in the finished polymer. In this case, however, it is disadvantageous that the dye can easily be dissolved out again from such colored masses or that the dye can bleed out by itself. In addition, especially in the case of non-thermoplastic polymers, it is often technically difficult to distribute the dyes evenly in the polymers.
In some cases, colored polymers have therefore been produced in which the dye is chemically bonded to the macromolecule, u. between polymers bearing aryl groups have been nitrated, the nitro groups have been reduced, the amino groups thus obtained have been diazotized and coupled with components capable of coupling to form macromolecular dyes. (British Patent No. 524, 996). However, this method of producing colored polymers is very laborious and, like all conversions with macromolecules, is difficult to reproduce; moreover, it can only be used with diazotized polymers.
It has been found that colored copolymers with excellent properties are obtained if dyes containing polymerizable double bonds, monomers containing condensable or additionable groups and optionally other monomers commonly used for the production of plastics are copolymerized and, if desired, crosslinked via the condensable and additionable groups.

Ureido, aminotriazine, aldehyde, methylol group-containing condensates, such as urea-formaldehyde, thiourea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, guanidine-formaldehyde, dicyandiamide-formaldehyde condensates or phenol - formaldehyde condensates use the known condensation reactions.
Other indirectly crosslinkable radicals are, for example, carboxylic acid and carboxylic acid ester groups, which z. B. condense with dihydric or polyhydric alcohols or amines, or hydroxyl groups which, for. B. are condensable with di- or polyvalent isocyanates.
As groups that are directly, e.g. B. by the action of heat or pH change, can be condensed, aldehyde, chlorohydrin, N-methylol and N-methylol ether groups are to be mentioned. These groups can also be condensed indirectly.
Furthermore come z. B. into consideration are those groups from which groups which can be crosslinked with water are formed, such as glycidyl groups or carbalkoxy groups which form hydroxyl groups under hydrolysis or acid anhydride groups which turn into carboxy groups.
Some compounds are listed below, for example, which in addition to a polymerizable group carry crosslinkable radicals of the type just explained: acrylic acid amide, methacrylic acid amide. Croton

Groups that can bring about crosslinking by addition reactions are, for. B. isocyanate groups and epoxy groups. These groups can e.g. B. be crosslinked with diols, diamines and dicarboxylic acids. In the case of isocyanate groups and dicarboxylic acids or water, which react with one another to split off carbon dioxide, foamy, colored, crosslinked polymers can be obtained.
In the case of the interpolymerization, further polymerizable compounds which do not carry reactive groups, e.g. B. aromatic vinyl compounds such as styrene and its polymerizable derivatives, polymerizable unsaturated hydrocarbons such as butadiene and isoprene, nitriles, amides, N-substituted amides, esters, anhydrides and salts of unsaturated polymerizable mono- or dicarboxylic acids, such as acrylic acid, and their (x -or 6-substituted derivatives, such as methacrylic acid, crotonic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, itaconic acid or citraconic acid, vinyl esters of organic and inorganic acids such as vinyl acetate, propionate or butyrate, vinyl halides such as vinyl chloride and vinyl bromide, vinylidene halides, vinyl ethers,

such as vinyl carbazole: idon, vinyl caprolactam, or vinyl capryl lactam. These basic compounds are also suitable in the form of their quaternary salts as monomer components: quaternary salts of basic vinyl ethers, of acrylic and methacrylamides and of esters of basic alcohols and polymerizable carboxylic acids can also be used.
The colored copolymers can also be made from several dyes and several different \ ionomers. The quantitative ratio can be chosen arbitrarily within wide limits, but preference is given to starting from monomer mixtures which contain 0.1-20% by weight of dyes, for example? is contained to 30% of the crosslinking monomer and the remainder of the "inert" monomer.

Protective colloids, thickeners, antifoam agents and buffer substances are carried out.
The substances usually used for this purpose, such as
Peroxides, e.g. B. hydrogen peroxide, persulfates such as potassium persulfate, sodium persulfate or ammonium persulfate, redox systems, z. B. potassium persulfate-sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate, azodiisobutyronitrile or mixtures of these substances into consideration. The usual emulsifiers and / or protective colloids, such as paraffin sulfonates, aralkyl sulfonates, addition products of ethylene oxide with fatty oils or polyvinyl alcohol are used in emulsion polymerization.
The crosslinking can be carried out directly or indirectly, depending on the reactive groups present in the polymer, with higher temperatures and / or catalysts which accelerate the crosslinking being used, depending on the reactivity. Such catalysts are z. B. in the reaction of amide groups with N-methylol groups or N-methylol groups with each other acidic inorganic or organic compounds, such as ammonium nitrate, ammonium chloride, phosphoric acid and their esters, maleic acid, tartaric acid and the like. Similar substances commonly used in the condensation of methylol compounds.
The new colored emulsion polymers are used to produce moldings, in particular layered structures, such as films, nonwovens, paints, coatings and laminated materials. The crosslinking of the polymers is then carried out in situ, e.g. B. after application to the material to be coated or after impregnation of the material to be bound by the measures specified above, such as heating or treatment with substances causing the crosslinking, made. The networking can be carried out simultaneously with other such. B. deforming measures take place.
The moldings produced using the new colored copolymers are distinguished by their particularly uniform coloring and the high fastness properties of the dyeings to solvents or the effects of the weather. The authenticity of the dyeings is based on the fact that the dyes used are themselves part of the copolymers and therefore cannot be separated from the latter without completely destroying the polymers. In addition, the colored crosslinked polymers are in most cases significantly more lightfast than the dyes alone, an advantage which allows inexpensive dyes to be used with success, even if they are not very genuine.
A particular advantage of the new colored crosslinkable copolymers is that they are usually stored for any length of time in the still uncrosslinked, deformable state and used if necessary, e.g. B. can be deformed, and that they are then converted into the crosslinked and thus mechanically and chemically extremely resistant state during or after the deformation. The colored crosslinked copolymers can also be used together with other substances such. B. fillers and glass fibers are produced.
