<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Process for the production of new quaternary ammonium compounds
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of new quaternary ammonium compounds which are particularly suitable for the control of scab on apple trees and which are completely safe even in years when repeated use is required.
The process according to the invention enables the production of fungicidal quaternary ammonium compounds of the formula
EMI1.1
where: Rl is hydrogen or an alkyl group with up to 4 carbon atoms, R2 is an alkyl group with 9-15 carbon atoms, the total number of carbon atoms in the radicals R1 and R2 being not more than 16, Y1 and Y2 hydrogen or chlorine atoms, where at least one of the radicals Y1 and Y2 is chlorine, Ys is a hydrogen or chlorine atom, the total number of chlorine atoms on the phenyl radical with the substituents Y being 2 or 3, n being 1 or 2 and X being an anion.
The process is characterized in that a tertiary amine of the formula
EMI1.2
with a polychlorobenzyl halide of the formula
EMI1.3
(R1, R Y Y, Y, n and X with the above meanings) is implemented.
As can be seen, the position and the number of chlorine atoms in the benzyl group are limited. These limitations arise from the need to balance fungicidal activity and lack of phytotoxic activity. Similar factors play a role for the alkylbenzyl group, the size of the radical R being important, while its position does not seem to be decisive. One or more methyl groups or other small alkyl substituents can be present. A preferred class of compounds has a methyl substituent and, on this benzyl group, a long chain alkyl group. These restrictions are necessary to ensure the right balance between toxicity to fungi and the simultaneous lack of any phytotoxicity.
Of course, it is desirable to establish a balance that is beneficial in controlling fungus diseases without harm to the host plant.
A way has already been sought to improve the fungi toxicity and stability of the known alkyldimethylbenzylammonium salts. To increase the ability of the alkyldimethylbenzyl salts to kill, it has been proposed to introduce chlorine into the benzyl group. Unfortunately
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
there was a greater increase in the undesirable effects than the desired effect. The same disadvantage arose with quaternary compounds whose activity was based on an N-Alkylphenoxyäthylod. similar ether-containing group is based.
It was therefore completely unexpected when it was found that quaternary compounds with N-alkylbenzyl groups of suitable size can be improved with regard to their fungi toxicity and the absence of phytotoxic effects by special dichloro and trichlorobenzyl groups. How unpredictable the influence on the balance between these desired properties is becomes particularly clear when one considers that both fungi and apple trees are vegetative.
Quaternary ammonium salts meeting the above strict requirements are those defined by the above formula (I). They are conveniently prepared by reacting a tertiary amine of the formula (II) with a polychlorobenzyl halide of the formula (III). The reaction is advantageously carried out in an inert organic solvent, such as acetone, methylhexyl ketone, acetonitrile, nitromethane, ethyl acetate, benzene, toluene or suitable petroleum fractions (naphtha). Approximately equivalent amounts of the two reactants are mixed with one another and reacted. The reaction temperatures are between 25 and 150 ° C. In some cases the quaternary ammonium salt precipitates during its formation and can be separated off and freed from the solvent.
In other cases, the solvent can be distilled off the reaction mixture, leaving a residue which is used as such or, for. B. can be purified by precipitation, extraction, treatment with activated carbon or recrystallization.
The preparation of typical compounds is described in the examples below, without the invention being restricted to these. Unless otherwise indicated, parts are parts by weight.
Example 1: A mixture of 25 parts of dodecylbenzyldimethylamine, 16.1 parts of 2,4-dichlorobenzyl chloride and 100 parts of acetone is heated under reflux for 3.5 hours. The reaction mixture is then cooled to approximately 25 ° C., a solid separating out, which is collected, washed with anhydrous diethyl ether and dried. 14.2 parts of a product are obtained which melts at 132 to 135 C and, according to analysis, is dodecylbenzyl-dimethyl- (2,4-dichlorobenzyl) -ammonium chloride:

7%, 21, 3 and 7, 1%).
The above procedure is repeated using 28.3 parts of dodecylbenzyldiethylamine in place of the dodecylbenzyldimethylamine. The product dodecylbenzyl diethyl-2,4-dichlorobenzylammonium chloride has similar properties to the product described above. It is just as harmless to delicate foliage and roughly as fungitoxic.
Example 2: A mixture of 30.3 parts of dodecylbenzyldimethylamine, 20 parts of 3,4-dichlorobenzyl chloride and 120 parts of acetone is heated under reflux with stirring for 2.5 hours. After evaporation of the solvent, 38.1 part of a viscous oil is obtained which contains 21.2% chlorine and 3% nitrogen. Calculated for dodecylbenzyl-dimethyl- (3,4-dichlorobenzyl) -ammonium chloride 21.3% or 2.8% ].
Similar compounds were prepared which contained ethyl or oxyethyl groups in place of the methyl groups of the above compound.
The above compound when tested by the plate germination method had an ED50 of less than 5 parts / million against Alternaria solani, Monolinia fructicola and Stemphylium sarcinaeforme. When applied to young tomato plants in the form of an aqueous spray containing 0, 1% or even 1%, it shows no phytotoxicity.
EMI2.3
: 25.3 parts of a product are obtained which, according to analysis, corresponds to nonylbenzyl-dimethyl- (3, 4-dichlorobenzyl) ammonium chloride. Cl: found 23.9% (der. 23.3%) N: found 3.0% (calc. 3, 1%).
Compounds of the above type with smaller alkylbenzyl groups show a certain phytotoxicity and their fungi toxicity decreases rapidly as the alkyl group becomes smaller.
. The (nonyl-methyl-benzyl) -dimethyl- (3, 4-dichlorobenzyl) -ammonium salts with chloride, bromide, acetate, sulfate, methyl sulfate and the like. Like. As an anion are somewhat more effective than the above nonylbenzyl compound and completely harmless to the foliage.
The effectiveness increases somewhat as the RI group increases if the R substituent is formed by a nonyl group. So are (nonyl-ethy1-benzyl) -dimethyl-dichlorobenzylammonium chloride
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
or-bromide and (nonyl-butyl-benzyl) -dimethyl-dichlorobenzylammonium chloride or bromide are all effective in combating fungi and bacteria which attack growing plants, and are harmless to the plants even after repeated use.
Example 4: In the same way as in Example 2, 33 parts of (dodecyl-methyl-benzyl) -dimethylamine and 19.6 parts of 3,4-dichlorobenzyl chloride in 120 parts of acetone are reacted. After the solvent has been removed, 51 parts of a yellow oil are obtained which, in its composition, has the formula

corresponds. The chlorine content is 21.3% and the nitrogen content is 2.7%.
This compound is fungitoxic but not phytotoxic.

23 parts of this chloride are reacted with 30 parts of dodecylbenzyldimethylamine by refluxing in acetone. After the acetone has been distilled off, an oil is obtained which, according to analysis, consists mainly of dodecylbenzyl-dimethyl-trichlorobenzyl-ammonium chloride.
Example 6: Following the procedure of Example 1, (dodecyl-methyl-benzyl) -dimethylamine are obtained

loot is practically quantitative.
This compound is fungitoxic but not phytotoxic.
The chlorides described above can be replaced by other anions such as sulfate, methyl sulfate, acetate, phosphate, benzenesulfonate, toluenesulfonate, naphthalenesulfonate and the like by exchanging the chloride ion. Like. Be converted into other salts.
