Thennostatreglervoriichtung für gebläse gekühlte
Brennkraftmaschinen

Thennostat control device for fan cooled
Internal combustion engines
The invention relates to a thermostat control device for fan-cooled internal combustion engines with automatic control of the temperature as a function of the temperatures of the surroundings and the engine exhaust gases.
In air-cooled internal combustion engines, whose fan air cooling is thermostatically controlled taking into account the temperature of the exhaust gases, it has become known to provide a duct surrounding the exhaust line of the engine at a small distance and the thermostat to divert the cooling air flow from the engine cylinder. which controls the cooling air throughput through the fan, to a location within the duct located away from the cylinder and downstream of the exhaust line in the direction of flow. It is also known, in machines of the type mentioned, a temperature sensor both the influence of the heat developed by the machine, z.
B. the hot exhaust gases or the cylinder head, as well as with a protruding from the area of the increased temperature part of the cooling by the conveyed by the cooling fan, not yet heated air. In this case, the temperature sensor is designed as a rod made of a metal with good thermal conductivity and great thermal expansion, the end of which is placed in the exhaust manifold and the part of which protruding from this line is in the air flow of the cooling fan.
The actuation of a control element of a hydraulic clutch, via which the fan is driven, is derived from the extent to which the rod changes in length.
In the first-mentioned devices, the air is heated considerably before it hits the thermostat, so that its sensitivity to temperature fluctuations in the outside air is practically zero. The other control device can only be used with a special design of the cooling system.
The influence of temperature changes of both the outside air and the engine exhaust on the cooling of an internal combustion engine can be ensured in a simple manner and largely independent of the special structure of the cooling system if, according to the invention, a heat exchanger with at least one flow path through which the engine exhaust flows and directly from the Cooling air exiting the cooling air fan is flushed, as well as a downstream of the heat exchanger in the exhaust gas

re is influenced indirectly by temperature fluctuations in the cooling air in addition to the machine exhaust gases.
The heat exchanger can be designed as a tube winding with one or more turns, one end of which is connected to the collecting line for the exhaust gases and the other end of which is connected to the thermostat. The connection with the collecting line can be made via a calming chamber. It has proven useful to design the thermostat as a ribbed hollow body made of metal with good thermal conductivity and to provide the fan housing with a passage opening facing these ribs, so that cooling air emerging from this opening brushes the ribbed thermostat body.
The invention is explained in more detail below using an exemplary embodiment which is illustrated in the drawing. In this Fig. 1 shows partially in side view, partially in section,

A branch line 3 leads from the collecting pipe 2 for the exhaust gases of an engine 1 to a calming chamber 4, which serves to dampen the pressure fluctuations of the exhaust shocks. The calming chamber is connected by means of a connecting line 5 to a heat exchanger which consists of a tube winding 6 with one or more turns and in which the arrow f symbolizes

Schers leads a line to a thermostat 7, from which the gases are diverted into the outside air.
The thermostat 7 actuates, via a cable 9 tensioned by a return spring 11, flaps 10, which more or less restrict the entry of the cooling air sucked in by the fan 8.
It goes without saying that the cable 9 could be replaced by a lifting device and a linkage which operate the flaps in the same way. Instead of the flaps, other suitable throttling devices can be used, with the aid of which the inlet cross section for the fresh cooling air sucked in by the fan can be changed.
Depending on the more or less great inclination of the flaps 10, the air conveyed to the engine can

In the interior of the thermostat there is an element 14 which expands when heat is supplied and which, for example, uses the thermal expansion of wax, glycerine or a bucket of volatile liquid and is fastened to the hollow body 12 with the aid of a nut 20. This element actuates a control rod 15, which in turn is connected to the cable 9.
The gases coming from the heat exchanger, which coil around the expandable element 14, exit through a number of radially arranged air holes 18 into the outside air.
The hollow body 12 is, as shown in Fig. 2, provided with peripheral cooling fins 16, soft the

cooling effect exchanger 6 acts, but also on the gases flowing around the thermostat element 14.
- If the load on the engine is increased to full load at an assumed constant outside temperature, the temperature of the combustion gases increases.
After the hot gases have flowed through the connecting line 5 and the heat exchanger 6, they come to the thermostat 7 and heat the element 14, which expands as a result of the increase in temperature and moves the rod 15 in the direction of arrow 19, which opens the flaps completely 10 entails.
However, when the load on the engine is reduced, the flaps 10 close more and more.
When the outside temperature of the air is lower, for example in winter, the air flow hitting the winding 6 and the thermostat is colder, which results in the expansion of the element

The opening of the flap effect on the heat exchanger 6 at an exhaust gas temperature which corresponds to a given load is expressed as a direct effect on the thermostat 7 and the like. as a cooling of the gases flowing in it.

It is clear that the device according to the invention has a double regulation that allows the engine to work at the optimum temperature, regardless of how heavy its load and what the condition of the outside air is,
