Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>

Process for decarburizing the superficial layers of workpieces
iron and Steel
EMI1.1
The chemical reactions that take place during the decarburization process are of a complicated nature. In addition to the simple carbon oxides - carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide - organic compounds are also formed; in aqueous solutions are e.g. B. mellitic acid and benzene tetracarboxylic acid detectable.
Aqueous or molten alkalis, and in special cases also acidic electrolytes, can be used for the cathodic treatment. The decarburization effect arises from the fact that hydrocarbons are formed through the action of nascent hydrogen, which escape.
Embodiment 1: A workpiece made of steel with a carbon content of 0'9% is brought to a carbon content of 0'06% on the surface for the purpose of the subsequent siliconization by an electrolytic pickling treatment with anodic switching. A salt bath with a temperature of 750 C is used as the electrolyte
EMI1.2
Decarburization depth of 0.4 mm reached.
Embodiment 2: For the purpose of chroming, a steel sheet with 0-5% C should be decarburized on the surface to a C content below 0-1%. The treatment is carried out with cathodic connection in an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution of 30 Be (24%) at a temperature of 85 C. With a treatment time of 20 minutes and a current density of 4 to 5 A / dm 2, a depth of decarburization of 0.2 mm is achieved . Mechanical aftertreatment to remove loosened scale layer is required.
