Abstract

264,788. Metals Protection Corporation, (Assignees of Humphries, C. H.). Jan. 25, 1926, [Convention date]. Coating.-Iron and steel articles are rendered resistant to corrosion by treatment with a solution containing chromic acid with or without sulphuric acid. The action is stated to be due to the formation on the surface of an adherent, insoluble mixture of iron and chromium oxides and chromates. The process may be hastened by electrolysis. The electrolyte may contain 2 lbs. of chromic acid and ¢ oz. of sulphuric acid per gallon, the articles being connected as anodes for about 5 minutes with a current density of 10 amps. per sq. ft. A solution for treatment without electrolysis contains 2 lbs. of chromic acid and 2-15 oz. of sulphuric acid per gallon and is preferably heated to 100-150‹ F. The articles after treatment are dried, rinsed and again dried in a warm oven. The same solution may be used with electrolysis, the time required being then shorter. The coatings may be heated to 212‹ F. ; they are then adapted to receive coatings of paint or enamel.
