Abstract
An expression cassette comprising: a) the nucleic acid sequence encoding for 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) or for a functional equivalent thereof; and / or b) at least one HPPD coding sequence is functionally linked to the coding sequence of a specific transit peptide from the organelle of a plant. A recombinant vector comprising at least one expression cassette as described. A microorganism comprising said recombinant vector and belonging to the genus Agrobacterium and in particular to the species Agrobacterium tumefaiens. Use of the vector or a microorganism in accordance with what is described for the transformation of plants, plant cells, plant tissue or plant organs to improve the synthesis of tocopherol. Plants are selected from crops such as cereals, corn, soybeans, rice, cotton, sugar cane, canola, sunflowers, flax, potatoes, tobacco, tomatoes, rapeseed, alfalfa, salad species, such as cress, and different species of trees, nuts and vines. A method of generating transgenic plants where the cells of plants, tissue or organs or protoplasts are transformed with a vector with a microorganism as described. Using an expression cassette, a vector a microorganism as described to obtain a transgenic plant, from which plant metabolites are obtained, in particular tocopherols. A tocopherol preparation process comprising tocopherol isolation from a crop of a transformed plant as described.
