Abstract
다수의 기공을 갖는 코어부 기재 및 상기 코어부 기재의 양면에 위치하는 다수의 기공을 갖는 스킨부 기재를 구비하고, 상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재 모두 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하거나, 또는 상기 코어부 기재만 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하고, 상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재 모두 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하는 경우, 상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%가 상기 스킨부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량% 보다 큰 다공성 고분자 기재; 및 상기 다공성 고분자 기재의 적어도 일면에 위치되어 있으며, 다수의 제2 무기물 입자, 상기 제2 무기물 입자의 표면의 일부 또는 전부에 위치하여 상기 제2 무기물 입자 사이를 연결 및 고정시키는 바인더 고분자를 포함하는 다공성 코팅층;을 포함하고, 상기 제1 무기물 입자의 모스 경도가 제2 무기물 입자의 모스 경도 보다 더 큰 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터, 및 이를 포함하는 전기화학 소자가 제시된다.
Description
본 발명은 세퍼레이터 및 이를 포함하는 전기화학소자에 관한 것으로서, 라미네이션 공정 시 변형이 완화되며 이로 인해 라미네이션 쇼트 불량률이 감소되는 세퍼레이터 및 이를 포함하는 전기화학소자에 관한 것이다.
본 출원은 2020년 8월 14일에 출원된 한국출원 제10-2020-0102806호에 기초한 우선권을 주장하며, 해당 출원의 명세서에 개시된 모든 내용은 본 출원에 원용된다.
최근 에너지 저장 기술에 대한 관심이 갈수록 높아지고 있다. 휴대폰, 캠코더 및 노트북 PC, 나아가서는 전기 자동차의 에너지까지 적용분야가 확대되면서 전기화학소자의 연구와 개발에 대한 노력이 점점 구체화되고 있다. 전기화학소자는 이러한 측면에서 가장 주목 받고 있는 분야이고 그 중에서도 충방전이 가능한 이차전지의 개발은 관심의 초점이 되고 있으며, 최근에는 이러한 전지를 개발함에 있어서 용량 밀도 및 비에너지를 향상시키기 위하여 새로운 전극과 전지의 설계에 대한 연구개발로 진행되고 있다.
현재 적용되고 있는 이차전지 중에서 1990 년대 초에 개발된 리튬 이차전지는 수용액 전해액을 사용하는 Ni-MH, Ni-Cd, 황산-납 전지 등의 재래식 전지에 비해서 작동 전압이 높고 에너지 밀도가 월등히 크다는 장점으로 각광을 받고 있다. 그러나 이러한 리튬 이온 전지는 유기 전해액을 사용하는 데 따르는 발화 및 폭발 등의 안전 문제가 존재하고, 제조가 까다로운 단점이 있다.
최근의 리튬 이온 고분자 전지는 이러한 리튬 이온 전지의 약점을 개선하여 차세대 전지의 하나로 꼽히고 있으나 아직까지 전지의 용량이 리튬 이온 전지와 비교하여 상대적으로 낮고, 특히 저온에서의 방전 용량이 불충분하여 이에 대한 개선이 시급히 요구되고 있다.
상기와 같은 전기화학소자는 많은 회사에서 생산되고 있으나 그들의 안전성 특성은 각각 다른 양상을 보인다. 이러한 전기화학소자의 안전성 평가 및 안전성 확보는 매우 중요하다. 가장 중요한 고려사항은 전기화학소자가 오작동시 사용자에게 상해를 입혀서는 안 된다는 것이며, 이러한 목적으로 안전규격은 전기화학소자 내의 발화 및 발연 등을 엄격히 규제하고 있다. 전기화학소자의 안전성 특성에 있어서, 전기화학소자가 과열되어 열폭주가 일어나거나 세퍼레이터가 관통될 경우에는 폭발을 일으키게 될 우려가 크다. 특히, 전기화학소자의 세퍼레이터로서 통상적으로 사용되는 폴리올레핀계 다공성 고분자 기재는 재료적 특성과 연신을 포함하는 제조공정상의 특성으로 인하여 100℃ 이상의 온도에서 극심한 열 수축 거동을 보임으로서, 캐소드와 애노드 사이의 단락을 일으켰다.
이와 같은 전기화학소자의 안전성 문제를 해결하기 위하여, 다수의 기공을 갖는 다공성 고분자 기재의 적어도 일면에, 과량의 무기물 입자와 바인더 고분자의 혼합물을 코팅하여 다공성 유기-무기 코팅층을 형성한 세퍼레이터가 제안되었다.
한편, 종래의 기술은 라미네이션 공정을 통해 세퍼레이터와 전극을 접착하여 적층하는 방식으로 전지를 제조하고 있다. 라미네이션 공정에서 전극과 세퍼레이터를 적층한 후 열과 압력을 가하게 되면 요철이 있는 기공구조를 만든 바인더 층과 전극 표면이 접착되며, 라미네이션 공정에서 가해지는 열과 압력 조건이 높을수록 전극과의 접착력이 높아진다. 최근 생산성을 향상하기 위해 공정속도를 올리며 세퍼레이터에 열이 가해지는 시간이 짧기 때문에 접착력 확보를 위해 압력을 증가하는 방식으로 접착력을 확보하고 있으나 고압에 의한 변형이 우려되고 있다. 세퍼레이터에 사용되는 다공성 고분자 기재가 라미네이션 시 열과 압력에 취약한 경우에 상기 다공성 고분자 기재의 두께 감소가 크게 나타나며 기공 손상이 커 전지의 성능 뿐만 아니라 세퍼레이터의 절연 파괴 전압이 감소하여 결과적으로는 Hi-pot 불량 및 저전압 불량을 야기할 수 있어 개선이 필요하다.
따라서 본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 과제는, 전극과의 라미네이션 공정시 변형이 완화되며 이로 인해 라미네이션 쇼트 불량률이 감소되는 세퍼레이터를 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 또 다른 과제는 상기 세퍼레이터를 구비하는 전기화학소자를 제공하는 것이다.
상기 과제를 해결하기 위하여, 본 발명의 일 측면에 따르면, 하기 구현예의 세퍼레이터가 제공된다.
제1 구현예에 따르면,
다수의 기공을 갖는 코어부 기재 및 상기 코어부 기재의 양면에 위치하는 다수의 기공을 갖는 스킨부 기재를 구비하고,
상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재 모두 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하거나, 또는 상기 코어부 기재만 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하고,
상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재 모두 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하는 경우, 상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%가 상기 스킨부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량% 보다 큰 다공성 고분자 기재; 및
상기 다공성 고분자 기재의 적어도 일면에 위치되어 있으며, 다수의 제2 무기물 입자, 상기 제2 무기물 입자의 표면의 일부 또는 전부에 위치하여 상기 제2 무기물 입자 사이를 연결 및 고정시키는 바인더 고분자를 포함하는 다공성 코팅층;을 포함하고,
상기 제1 무기물 입자의 모스 경도가 제2 무기물 입자의 모스 경도 보다 더 큰 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터가 제공된다.
제2 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예에 있어서,
상기 제1 무기물 입자의 모스 경도가 5 이상이고, 상기 제2 무기물 입자의 모스 경도(MI)가 5 미만일 수 있다.
제3 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 또는 제2 구현예에 있어서,
상기 제1 무기물 입자가 산화규소(SiO), 이산화티탄(TiO2), 지르코니아(ZrO2), 알루미나(Al2O3), 황산바륨(BaSO4), 티탄산바륨(BaTiO3), 보헤마이트, 산화 아연, 산화 마그네슘, 수산화 마그네슘, 수산화 알루미늄, 또는 이들 중 적어도 2 이상의 혼합물을 포함할 수 있다.
제4 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제3 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 제2 무기물 입자가 황산바륨(BaSO4), 티탄산바륨(BaTiO3), 보헤마이트, 산화 아연, 산화 마그네슘, 수산화 마그네슘, 수산화 알루미늄, 또는 이들 중 적어도 2 이상의 혼합물을 포함할 수 있다.
제5 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제4 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재 모두 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하는 경우, 상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%가 상기 스킨부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량% 보다 20 내지 600 배 클 수 있다.
제6 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제5 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%가 10 내지 20 중량%일 수 있다.
제7 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제6 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%가 10 내지 20 중량%이고, 상기 스킨부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%가 0.1 내지 10 중량%일 수 있다.
제8 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제7 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 제2 무기물 입자의 BET 비표면적이 5 내지 20 m2/g일 수 있다.
제9 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제8 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재가 폴리올레핀계 다공성 고분자 기재일 수 있다.
제10 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제9 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재의 멜트 인덱스(MI, Melt Index)가 0.2 g/10min 이하일 수 있다.
제11 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제10 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 바인더 고분자가 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드-헥사플루오로프로필렌 (polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene), 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드-트리클로로에틸렌 (polyvinylidene fluoride-co-trichloroethylene), 폴리메틸메타크릴레이트 (polymethylmethacrylate), 폴리부틸아크릴레이트 (polybutylacrylate), 폴리부닐메타아크릴레이트 (polybutylmethacrylate), 폴리아크릴로니트릴 (polyacrylonitrile), 폴리비닐피롤리돈 (polyvinylpyrrolidone), 폴리비닐아세테이트 (polyvinylacetate), 에틸렌 비닐 아세테이트 공중합체 (polyethylene-co-vinyl acetate), 폴리에틸렌옥사이드 (polyethylene oxide), 폴리아릴레이트(polyarylate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 (cellulose acetate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 부틸레이트 (cellulose acetate butyrate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 프로피오네이트 (cellulose acetate propionate), 시아노에틸플루란 (cyanoethylpullulan), 시아노에틸폴리비닐알콜 (cyanoethylpolyvinylalcohol), 시아노에틸셀룰로오스 (cyanoethylcellulose), 시아노에틸수크로오스 (cyanoethylsucrose), 플루란 (pullulan), 카르복실 메틸 셀룰로오스 (carboxyl methyl cellulose), 또는 이들 중 2종 이상의 혼합물일 수 있다.
제12 구현예에 따르면,
캐소드, 애노드, 상기 캐소드 및 애노드 사이에 개재된 세퍼레이터를 포함하는 전기화학소자에 있어서, 상기 세퍼레이터가 제1 구현예 내지 제11 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예의 세퍼레이터인 것을 특징으로 하는 전기화학소자가 제공된다.
제13 구현예에 따르면, 제12 구현예에 있어서,
상기 전기화학소자가 리튬 이차전지일 수 있다.
종래의 다공성 고분자 기재에 무기물 입자와 바인더 고분자를 포함하는 다공성 코팅층을 구비하는 세퍼레이터의 경우 전극과의 라미네이션시 다공성 코팅층과 다공성 기재가 함께 압축되었으나, 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 세퍼레이터는 경도가 낮은 무기물 입자를 다공성 코팅층에 적용함으로써 다공성 코팅층의 변형이 주로 발생함으로써 다공성 고분자 기재의 변형을 방지할 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 세퍼레이터는 다공성 고분자 기재 내에 무기물 입자를 도입함으로써 무기물 입자가 지지체 역할을 하여 다공성 고분자 기재의 변형을 추가적으로 방지하는 효과가 있다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 세퍼레이터에서는 다공성 고분자 기재 내에 무기물 입자가 도입되어, 다공성 고분자 기재의 젖음 특성(wetting 특성)이 증가하고, 이로 인해 다공성 고분자 기재에 대한 다공성 코팅층용 슬러리의 함침량이 상대적으로 증가하여 다공성 고분자 기재의 변형을 보호하는 동시에 절연성도 증대되는 효과가 있다.
이하, 본 발명을 도면을 참조하여 상세히 설명하기로 한다. 본 명세서 및 청구범위에 사용된 용어나 단어는 통상적이거나 사전적인 의미로 한정해서 해석되어서는 아니 되며, 발명자는 그 자신의 발명을 가장 최선의 방법으로 설명하기 위해 용어의 개념을 적절하게 정의할 수 있다는 원칙에 입각하여 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 부합하는 의미와 개념으로 해석되어야만 한다.
본 발명의 일 측면에 따른 세퍼레이터는, 다수의 기공을 갖는 코어부 기재 및 상기 코어부 기재의 양면에 위치하는 다수의 기공을 갖는 스킨부 기재를 구비하고,
상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재 모두 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하거나, 또는 상기 코어부 기재만 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하고,
상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재 모두 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하는 경우, 상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%가 상기 스킨부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량% 보다 큰 다공성 고분자 기재; 및
상기 다공성 고분자 기재의 적어도 일면에 위치되어 있으며, 다수의 제2 무기물 입자, 상기 제2 무기물 입자의 표면의 일부 또는 전부에 위치하여 상기 제2 무기물 입자 사이를 연결 및 고정시키는 바인더 고분자를 포함하는 다공성 코팅층;을 포함하고,
상기 제1 무기물 입자의 모스 경도가 제2 무기물 입자의 모스 경도 보다 더 크다.
상기 다공성 고분자 기재는, 구체적으로 다공성 고분자 필름 기재 또는 다공성 고분자 부직포 기재일 수 있다.
상기 다공성 고분자 필름 기재로는 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌과 같은 폴리올레핀으로 이루어진 다공성 고분자 필름일 수 있으며, 이러한 폴리올레핀 다공성 고분자 필름 기재는 예를 들어 80 내지 130 ℃의 온도에서 셧다운 기능을 발현한다.
이때, 폴리올레핀 다공성 고분자 필름은 고밀도 폴리에틸렌, 선형 저밀도 폴리에틸렌, 저밀도 폴리에틸렌, 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌과 같은 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 폴리부틸렌, 폴리펜텐 등의 폴리올레핀계 고분자를 각각 단독 또는 이들의 2종 이상 혼합하여 고분자로 형성할 수 있다.
또한, 상기 다공성 고분자 필름 기재는 폴리올레핀 외에 폴리에스테르 등의 다양한 고분자들을 이용하여 필름 형상으로 성형하여 제조될 수도 있다.
또한, 상기 다공성 고분자 필름 기재 및 다공성 부직포 기재는 상기와 같은 폴리올레핀계 외에 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트(polyethyleneterephthalate), 폴리부틸렌테레프탈레이트(polybutyleneterephthalate), 폴리에스테르(polyester), 폴리아세탈(polyacetal), 폴리아미드(polyamide), 폴리카보네이트(polycarbonate), 폴리이미드(polyimide), 폴리에테르에테르케톤(polyetheretherketone), 폴리에테르설폰(polyethersulfone), 폴리페닐렌옥사이드(polyphenyleneoxide), 폴리페닐렌설파이드(polyphenylenesulfide), 폴리에틸렌나프탈렌(polyethylenenaphthalene) 등을 각각 단독으로 또는 이들을 혼합한 고분자로 형성될 수 있다.
상기 다공성 고분자 기재의 두께는 특별히 제한되지 않으나, 상세하게는 1 내지 100 ㎛, 더욱 상세하게는 5 내지 50 ㎛이고, 다공성 고분자 기재에 존재하는 기공 크기 및 기공도 역시 특별히 제한되지 않으나 각각 0.01 내지 50 ㎛ 및 10 내지 95%인 것이 바람직하다.
상기 다공성 고분자 기재는 다수의 기공을 갖는 코어부 기재 및 상기 코어부 기재의 양면에 위치하는 다수의 기공을 갖는 스킨부 기재를 구비하는 3층의 적층된 구조를 갖는다.
상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재의 멜트 인덱스(MI, Melt Index)가 0.2 g/10min 이하, 또는 0 내지 0.2 g/10min, 또는 0.02 내지 0.2 g/10min, 또는 0.06 내지 0.2 g/10min 일 수 있다. 상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재의 멜트 인덱스가 이러한 범위를 만족하는 경우에 다공성 고분자 기재에 사용된 고분자 수지의 중량평균분자량이 높을 수 있으며, 이에 따라 세퍼레이터의 모듈러스(modulus)가 중가하게 되어, 다공성 기재의 변형이 최소화 될 수 있고, 라미네이션 공정 후 발생할 수 있는 쇼트 불량 및 수명 평가시 전지 내압에 의한 세퍼레이터 변형으로 으로 인한 수명 단축을 개선할 수 있다.
상기 멜트 인덱스(용융 흐름지수)는 21.6kg의 압력으로 10min 동안 용융된 다공성 고분자 기재에 사용된 수지의 토출양을 통해 측정할 수 있다.
상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재 모두 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하거나, 또는 상기 코어부 기재만 제1 무기물 입자를 포함한다. 상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재에 제1 무기물 입자가 도입되는 경우, 무기물 입자로 인하여 다공성 고분자 기재의 젖음성(wetting)이 개선되어 다공성 코팅층용 슬러리의 함침량이 증가할 수 있다. 나아가, 상기 코어부 기재만 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하는 경우에는 다공성 고분자 기재의 표면 쪽에는 무기물 입자가 존재하지 않아, 세퍼레이터의 저항 특성이 더 개선될 수 있다.
상기 다공성 고분자 기재 내에 무기물 입자를 포함함으로써 무기물 입자가 지지체 역할을 하여 전극과 세퍼레이터와의 라미네이션 공정시 다공성 고분자 기재의 변형 정도를 최소화하여 기공 손상을 방지할 수 있어, 이러한 세퍼레이터를 채용한 전기화학소자의 성능 저하 문제를 개선시킬 수 있다. 또한 다공성 고분자 기재 내에 포함된 무기물 입자에 의해 다공성 코팅층용 슬러리의 함침량이 증가하여 슬러리가 건조된 후 다공성 고분자 기재 내에서 절연체로 작용하기 때문에 세퍼레이터의 절연 파괴 전압 감소를 막아 Hi-pot 불량 및 저전압 분량 현상도 개선시킬 수 있다.
상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재 모두 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하는 경우, 상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%가 상기 스킨부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량% 보다 크다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따르면, 상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%는 상기 스킨부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량% 보다 20 내지 600 배, 또는 30 내지 300 배 클 수 있다. 상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%와 상기 스킨부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%의 비율이 이러한 범위를 만족하는 경우에 다공성 고분자 기재의 변형을 최소화할 수 있고, 세퍼레이터의 저항이 개선되고, 절연 파괴 전압 특성이 개선될 수 있다.
구체적으로, 상기 코어부 기재만 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하는 경우에, 상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%은 10 내지 20 중량%, 또는 12 내지 18 중량%일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재 모두 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하는 경우에, 상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%은 10 내지 20 중량%, 또는 12 내지 18 중량%일 수 있고, 상기 스킨부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%는 0.1 내지 10 중량%, 또는 0.5 내지 7 중량%일 수 있다.
본 발명의 세퍼레이터는, 상기 다공성 고분자 기재의 적어도 일면에 위치되어 있으며, 다수의 제2 무기물 입자, 상기 제2 무기물 입자의 표면의 일부 또는 전부에 위치하여 상기 제2 무기물 입자 사이를 연결 및 고정시키는 바인더 고분자를 포함하는 다공성 코팅층을 포함한다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 세퍼레이터에 있어서, 상기 다공성 코팅층 형성에 사용되는 바인더 고분자로는 당 업계에서 다공성 코팅층 형성에 통상적으로 사용되는 고분자를 사용할 수 있다. 특히, 유리 전이 온도(glass transition temperature, Tg)가 -200 내지 200℃인 고분자를 사용할 수 있는데, 이는 최종적으로 형성되는 다공성 코팅층의 유연성 및 탄성 등과 같은 기계적 물성을 향상시킬 수 있기 때문이다. 이러한 바인더 고분자는 무기물 입자들 사이를 연결 및 안정하게 고정시켜주는 바인더 역할을 충실히 수행함으로써, 다공성 코팅층이 도입된 세퍼레이터의 기계적 물성 저하 방지에 기여한다.
또한, 상기 바인더 고분자는 이온 전도 능력을 반드시 가질 필요는 없으나, 이온 전도 능력을 갖는 고분자를 사용할 경우 전기화학소자의 성능을 더욱 향상시킬 수 있다. 따라서, 상기 바인더 고분자는 가능한 유전율 상수가 높은 것을 사용할 수 있다. 실제로 전해액에서 염의 해리도는 전해액 용매의 유전율 상수에 의존하기 때문에, 상기 바인더 고분자의 유전율 상수가 높을수록 전해질에서의 염 해리도를 향상시킬 수 있다. 이러한 바인더 고분자의 유전율 상수는 1.0 내지 100 (측정 주파수 = 1 kHz) 범위가 사용 가능하며, 특히 10 이상일 수 있다.
전술한 기능 이외에, 상기 바인더 고분자는 액체 전해액 함침시 겔화됨으로써 높은 전해액 팽윤도(degree of swelling)를 나타낼 수 있는 특징을 가질 수 있다. 이에 따라, 상기 바인더 고분자의 용해도 지수, 즉 힐더브랜드 용해도 지수(Hildebrand solubility parameter)는 15 내지 45 MPa1/2 또는 15 내지 25 MPa1/2 및 30 내지 45 MPa1/2 범위이다. 따라서, 폴리올레핀류와 같은 소수성 고분자들보다는 극성기를 많이 갖는 친수성 고분자들이 더 사용될 수 있다. 상기 용해도 지수가 15 MPa1/2 미만 및 45 MPa1/2를 초과할 경우, 통상적인 전지용 액체 전해액에 의해 팽윤(swelling)되기 어려울 수 있기 때문이다.
이러한 바인더 고분자의 비제한적인 예로는 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드-헥사플루오로프로필렌 (polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene), 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드-트리클로로에틸렌 (polyvinylidene fluoride-co-trichloroethylene), 폴리메틸메타크릴레이트 (polymethylmethacrylate), 폴리부틸아크릴레이트 (polybutylacrylate), 폴리부닐메타아크릴레이트 (polybutylmethacrylate), 폴리아크릴로니트릴 (polyacrylonitrile), 폴리비닐피롤리돈 (polyvinylpyrrolidone), 폴리비닐아세테이트 (polyvinylacetate), 에틸렌 비닐 아세테이트 공중합체 (polyethylene-co-vinyl acetate), 폴리에틸렌옥사이드 (polyethylene oxide), 폴리아릴레이트(polyarylate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 (cellulose acetate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 부틸레이트 (cellulose acetate butyrate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 프로피오네이트 (cellulose acetate propionate), 시아노에틸플루란 (cyanoethylpullulan), 시아노에틸폴리비닐알콜 (cyanoethylpolyvinylalcohol), 시아노에틸셀룰로오스 (cyanoethylcellulose), 시아노에틸수크로오스 (cyanoethylsucrose), 플루란 (pullulan) 및 카르복실 메틸 셀룰로오스 (carboxyl methyl cellulose)등을 들 수 있으며, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
상기 제1 무기물 입자의 모스 경도는 제2 무기물 입자의 모스 경도 보다 더 크다. 구체적으로 상기 제1 무기물 입자의 모스 경도는 5 이상, 또는 5 내지 10, 또는 5.5 내지 9일 수 있고, 제2 무기물 입자의 모스 경도는 5 미만, 또는 2.5 내지 4일 수 있다.
본 발명의 용어 '모스 경도'는 10종의 광물(모스 경도 1: 활석, 모스 경도 2: 석고, 모스 경도 3: 방해석, 모스 경도 4: 형석, 모스 경도 5: 인회석, 모스 경도 6: 정장석, 모스 경도 7: 석영, 모스 경도 8: 황옥, 모스 경도 9: 강옥, 모스 경도 10: 다이아몬드)을 표준 물질로서 이들과 비교한 경도를 평가한 값이다. 표준 물질과 샘플을 비비어, 스크래치가 발생하는 쪽을 경도가 낮다고 하고 판정을 한다. 덧붙여 모스 경도를 직접 측정하는 것이 어려운 경우, 조성 분석에서 조성을 구해 같은 조성의 물질 모스 경도에서 판단할 수 있다.
제1 무기물 입자의 모스 경도가 제2 무기물 입자의 모스 경도 보다 큰 경우에, 제2 무기물 입자가 적용된 다공성 코팅층의 변형으로 인한 다공성 고분자 기재의 변형을 방지할 수 있다.
제2 무기물 입자의 모스 경도가 5를 초과하는 경우에는 다공성 코팅층 내에 포함된 모스 경도가 큰 무기물 입자가 세퍼레이터의 라미네이션 공정시 다공성 코팅층의 변형은 적으나 다공성 고분자 기재를 손상시켜 절연 성능이 감소되고, 다공성 고분자 기재의 기공을 변형시켜, 이러한 세퍼레이터를 채용한 전기화학소자의 수명 특성을 저하시킬 수 있다.
제2 무기물 입자의 모스 경도가 5 미만인 경우에 라미네이션 공정시 다공성 코팅층 내의 제2 무기물 입자의 변형으로 인해 상대적으로 다공성 고분자 기재의 변형을 방지할 수 있어 세퍼레이터의 hi-pot 특성 및 수명 특성 측면에서 유리하다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 있어서, 상기 제1 무기물 입자와 제2 무기물 입자는 제1 무기물 입자의 모스 경도가 제2 무기물 입자의 모스 경도 보다 큰 값을 갖는 조합이라면 제한 없이 선택할 수 있다.
구체적으로, 상기 제1 무기물 입자의 비제한적인 예로는 산화규소(SiO)(모스 경도: 7.0), 이산화티탄(TiO2)(모스 경도: 5.5~7.5), 지르코니아(ZrO2)(모스 경도: 8~8.5), 알루미나(Al2O3)(모스 경도: 9.0), 황산바륨(BaSO4)(모스 경도: 3.3), 티탄산바륨(BaTiO3)(모스 경도: 5)보헤마이트(AlO(OH))(모스 경도: 3.5 ~ 4), 산화 아연(ZnO) (모스 경도: 4.5), 산화 마그네슘(MgO) (모스 경도: 4), 수산화 마그네슘(Mg(OH)2) (모스 경도: 2.5), 수산화 알루미늄(Al(OH)3) (모스 경도: 2.5 ~ 3.5), 또는 이들 중 적어도 2 이상의 혼합물을 포함할 수 있다.
또한, 제2 무기물 입자의 비제한적인 예로는 황산바륨(BaSO4)(모스 경도: 3.3), 티탄산바륨(BaTiO3)(모스 경도: 5)보헤마이트(AlO(OH))(모스 경도: 3.5 ~ 4), 산화 아연(ZnO) (모스 경도: 4.5), 산화 마그네슘(MgO) (모스 경도: 4), 수산화 마그네슘(Mg(OH)2) (모스 경도: 2.5), 수산화 알루미늄(Al(OH)3) (모스 경도: 2.5 ~ 3.5), 또는 이들 중 적어도 2 이상의 혼합물을 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 있어서, 상기 제1 무기물 입자의 BET 비표면적은 175 내지 275 m2/g일 수 있고, 175 m2/g 내지 225 m2/g, 또는 225 내지 275 m2/g 일 수 있다.
상기 제1 무기물 입자는 다공성 고분자 기재 내에 적용되고, 다공성 고분자 기재 제조 과정에서 제1 무기물 입자와 고분자 수지를 혼합하여 용융 후 압출하는 과정이 있으므로, 상기 제1 무기물 입자의 BET 비표면적이 이러한 범위를 만족하는 경우에 용융 후 압출 시에 압출기의 막힘 현상이 없고 고분자 수지 내에 균일하게 혼합되어 공정성이 개선될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 있어서, 상기 제2 무기물 입자의 BET 비표면적은 5 내지 20 m2/g일 수 있고, 5 m2/g 이상, 10 m2/g 이상, 11 m2/g 이상, 20 m2/g 이하, 15 m2/g 이하, 14 m2/g 이하일 수 있다.
상기 제2 무기물 입자의 BET 비표면적이 이러한 범위를 만족하는 경우에, 다공성 코팅층 내에 제2 무기물 입자의 패킹 밀도(packing density)와 다공성 코팅층의 두께가 적정하게 유지되어 다공성 코팅층의 변형이 일어나지 않아 다공성 고분자 기재의 손상이나 절연성 저하의 문제가 방지될 수 있고, 적정한 비표면적에 의해 바인더 고분자의 상분리가 잘 진행되어 세퍼레이터에서 다공성 코팅층이 우수한 박리강도를 가질 수 있다.
이때, 상기 제1 무기물 입자 및 제2 무기물 입자의 BET 비표면적은 BEL Japan사의 BELSORP-mino II를 이용하여 액체 질소 온도 하(77K)에서의 질소가스 흡착량으로부터 산출될 수 있다.
상기 다공성 코팅층의 두께는 특별히 제한되지 않으나, 상세하게는 1 내지 10 ㎛, 또는 1.5 내지 6 ㎛일 수 있고, 상기 다공성 코팅층의 기공도 역시 특별히 제한되지 않으나 35 내지 65%일 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 측면에 따른 세퍼레이터는 다공성 코팅층 성분으로 전술한 무기물 입자 및 고분자 이외에, 기타 첨가제를 더 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따르면, 상기 다공성 코팅층은 유기계 슬러리를 이용한 유계 코팅층 또는 수계 슬리러를 이용한 수계 코팅층일 수 있고, 이중 수계 코팅층의 경우 박막 코팅에 유리하고 세퍼레이터의 저항이 감소된다는 면에서 더 유리할 수 있다. 또한, 유기계 슬러리를 이용하는 경우에는 쉘부의 저흡수성 고분자가 용해되지 않는 슬러리용 유기 용제의 선택이 필요하다.
본 발명의 일 측면에 따른 세퍼레이터의 제조방법은 다음과 같다.
상기 다공성 코팅층을 형성하기 위하여, 바인더 고분자를 용매에 용해시킨 다음 제2 무기물 입자를 첨가하고 이를 분산시켜 다공성 코팅층 형성용 조성물을 준비한다. 제2 무기물 입자들은 미리 소정의 평균입경을 갖도록 파쇄된 상태에서 첨가할 수 있으며, 또는 바인더 고분자의 용액에 제2 무기물 입자를 첨가한 후 제2 무기물 입자를 볼밀법 등을 이용하여 소정의 평균입경을 갖도록 제어하면서 파쇄하여 분산시킬 수도 있다.
또한, 다수의 기공을 갖는 코어부 기재 및 상기 코어부 기재의 양면에 위치하는 다수의 기공을 갖는 스킨부 기재를 구비하고, 상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재 모두 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하거나, 또는 상기 코어부 기재만 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하고, 상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재 모두 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하는 경우, 상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%가 상기 스킨부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량% 보다 큰 다공성 고분자 기재를 준비한다. 이러한 는 다공성 고분자 기재는 통상의 다층 구조의 다공성 고분자 기재를 제조하는 방법에 의하여 얻어질 수 있으며, 예를 들어 3개의 압출기를 이용하여 공압출하여 얻어질 수 있다. 이때, 상기 코어부 기재 용 압출기 및 상기 코어부 기재의 양면에 위치하는 스킨부 기재용 압출기에는 해당 기재용 고분자 외에 필요에 따라 적절한 함량의 제1 무기물 입자를 혼합하여 공압출 할 수 있다.
이후, 상기 다공성 코팅층 형성용 조성물을 상기 다공성 고분자 기재에 코팅한다. 이러한 코팅 방법은 특별히 한정하지는 않지만, 슬랏 코팅이나 딥 코팅 방법을 사용하는 것이 바람직하다. 슬랏 코팅은 슬랏 다이를 통해 공급된 조성물이 기재의 전면에 도포되는 방식으로 정량 펌프에서 공급되는 유량에 따라 코팅층 두께의 조절이 가능하다. 또한 딥 코팅은 조성물이 들어있는 탱크에 기재를 담그어 코팅하는 방법으로, 조성물의 농도 및 조성물 탱크에서 기재를 꺼내는 속도에 따라 코팅층 두께의 조절이 가능하며 보다 정확한 코팅 두께 제어를 위해 침지 후 메이어바 등을 통해 후계량할 수 있다.
이렇게 다공성 코팅층 형성용 조성물이 코팅된 다공성 고분자 기재를 오븐과 같은 건조기를 이용하여 건조함으로써 다공성 고분자 기재의 적어도 일면 상에 형성된 다공성 코팅층을 형성하게 된다.
본 발명의 구체적인 일 실시양태에서 상기 다공성 코팅층의 바인더는 제2 무기물 입자들이 서로 결착된 상태를 유지할 수 있도록 이들을 서로 부착(즉, 바인더가 제2 무기물 입자 사이를 연결 및 고정)시킬 수 있으며, 또한 상기 바인더에 의해 제2 무기물 입자와 다공성 고분자 기재가 결착된 상태를 유지할 수 있다. 상기 다공성 코팅층의 제2 무기물 입자들은 실질적으로 서로 접촉한 상태에서 인터스티셜 볼륨(interstitial volume)을 형성할 수 있고, 이때 인터스티셜 볼륨은 제2 무기물 입자들에 의한 충진 구조(closed packed or densely packed)에서 실질적으로 접촉하는 제2 무기물 입자들에 의해 한정되는 공간을 의미한다. 상기 제2 무기물 입자 사이의 인터스티셜 볼륨은 빈 공간이 되어 다공성 코팅층의 기공을 형성할 수 있다.
이때 사용되는 용매의 비제한적인 예로는 아세톤, 테트라하이드로퓨란, 메틸렌클로라이드, 클로로포름, 디메틸포름아미드, N-메틸-2-피롤리돈, 메틸에틸케톤, 시클로헥산, 메탄올, 에탄올, 이소프로필알코올, 프로판올 및 물 중에서 선택된 1종의 화합물 또는 2종 이상의 혼합물이 있을 수 있다.
상기 다공성 코팅층 형성용 조성물을 상기 다공성 고분자 기재에 코팅한 후에, 90 내지 180℃, 더 상세하게는 100 내지 150℃에서 건조하여 용매를 제거할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 측면에 따른 전기화학소자는 캐소드, 애노드, 상기 캐소드 및 애노드 사이에 개재된 세퍼레이터를 포함하고, 상기 세퍼레이터가 전술한 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 세퍼레이터이다.
이러한 전기화학소자는 전기 화학 반응을 하는 모든 소자를 포함하며, 구체적인 예를 들면, 모든 종류의 1차, 이차 전지, 연료 전지, 태양 전지 또는 수퍼 캐패시터 소자와 같은 캐퍼시터(capacitor) 등이 있다. 특히, 상기 2차 전지 중 리튬 금속 이차 전지, 리튬 이온 이차 전지, 리튬 폴리머 이차 전지 또는 리튬 이온 폴리머 이차 전지 등을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지가 바람직하다.
본 발명의 세퍼레이터와 함께 적용될 캐소드와 애노드의 양 전극으로는 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 당업계에 알려진 통상적인 방법에 따라 전극활물질을 전극 전류집전체에 결착된 형태로 제조할 수 있다. 상기 전극활물질 중 캐소드활물질의 비제한적인 예로는 종래 전기화학소자의 캐소드에 사용될 수 있는 통상적인 캐소드활물질이 사용 가능하며, 특히 리튬망간산화물, 리튬코발트산화물, 리튬니켈산화물, 리튬철산화물 또는 이들을 조합한 리튬복합산화물을 사용하는 것이 바람직하다. 애노드활물질의 비제한적인 예로는 종래 전기화학소자의 애노드에 사용될 수 있는 통상적인 애노드활물질이 사용 가능하며, 특히 리튬 금속 또는 리튬 합금, 탄소, 석유코크(petroleum coke), 활성화 탄소(activated carbon), 그래파이트(graphite) 또는 기타 탄소류 등과 같은 리튬 흡착물질 등이 바람직하다. 캐소드 전류집전체의 비제한적인 예로는 알루미늄, 니켈 또는 이들의 조합에 의하여 제조되는 호일 등이 있으며, 애노드 전류집전체의 비제한적인 예로는 구리, 금, 니켈 또는 구리 합금 또는 이들의 조합에 의하여 제조되는 호일 등이 있다.
본 발명의 전기화학소자에서 사용될 수 있는 전해액은 A+B-와 같은 구조의 염으로서, A+는 Li+, Na+, K+와 같은 알칼리 금속 양이온 또는 이들의 조합으로 이루어진 이온을 포함하고 B-는 PF6

상기 전해액 주입은 최종 제품의 제조 공정 및 요구 물성에 따라, 전지 제조 공정 중 적절한 단계에서 행해질 수 있다. 즉, 전지 조립 전 또는 전지 조립 최종 단계 등에서 적용될 수 있다.
이하, 본 발명을 구체적으로 설명하기 위해 실시예를 들어 상세하게 설명하기로 한다. 그러나, 본 발명에 따른 실시예는 여러 가지 다른 형태로 변형될 수 있으며, 본 발명의 범위가 아래에서 상술하는 실시예에 한정되는 것으로 해석되어서는 안 된다. 본 발명의 실시예는 당업계에서 평균적인 지식을 가진 자에게 본 발명을 보다 완전하게 설명하기 위해서 제공되는 것이다.
실시예 1
(1) 다공성 고분자 기재의 준비
폴리에틸렌 (멜트 인덱스 0.06 g/10min)과 제1 무기물 입자로 SiO (모스 경도: 7.0)를 포함하는 다수의 기공을 갖는 코어부 기재 및 상기 코어부 기재의 양면에 위치하는 다수의 기공을 갖는 스킨부 기재를 구비하고, 상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재는 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하되, 상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%, 및 상기 스킨부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%, 및 전체 두께가 하기 표 1에 제시된 바와 같은 3층 구조의 다공성 고분자 기재를 준비하였다. 이때, 준비된 다공성 고분자 기재에서 코어부 기재, 상기 코어부 기재의 양면에 형성된 상층 스킨부 기재, 및 하측 스킨부 기재의 두께는, 각각 10㎛, 1 ㎛, 및 1 ㎛ 이었다.
아래 표 1에서 스킨부 기재에서의 제1 무기물 입자의 함량(중량%)은 일측의 스킨부 기재에 대한 함량을 나타낸 것이고, 이 값은 상측 및 하측 스킨부 기재의 전체에 대한 제1 무기물 입자의 함량(중량%)과 동일하다.
(2) 다공성 코팅층용 슬러리의 준비
바인더 고분자로서 PVdF-HFP (폴리비닐리덴플로라이드-헥사플루오로프로필렌 공중합체) (중량평균분자량 39만, HFP 함량 8 중량%) 및 PVDF-CTFE (폴리비닐리덴플로라이드-클로로트리플루오로에틸렌 공중합체) (중량평균분자량 45만, CTFE 함량 20 중량%), 분산제(바인더 고분자 역할도 함)로서 시아노에틸비닐알코올과 커플링제(Ti-CA)(상품명 Tytan CP-219 (Titanate Coupling Agent)Borica, 제조사 Borica Co., Ltd.)를 아세톤에 첨가하여 50℃에서 약 12시간 이상 용해시켜 바인더 고분자 용액을 준비하였다. 제조된 바인더 고분자 용액에 제2 무기물 입자로서 BaSO4 (모스 경도 3.3, 평균입경 800 nm) 입자를 첨가하고, 분산하여 다공성 코팅층용 슬러리를 제조하였다. 이때, PVdF-HFP, PVDF-CTFE, 분산제, 커플링제 및 제2 무기물 입자의 중량비는 21:7:1:1:70 이었다.
(3) 세퍼레이터의 제조
이와 같이 제조된 슬러리를 딥 코팅법으로, 앞서 준비된 폴리에틸렌 다공성 기재의 양면에 코팅하고, 상대습도 50% 조건에서 23℃의 온도로 2 시간 동안 건조하여서 양면에 다공성 코팅층(다공성 코팅층 각각의 두께 약 3㎛)을 구비하는 세퍼레이터를 제조하였다.
실시예 2
제1 무기물 입자, 제2 무기물 입자, 다공성 고분자 기재, 로딩 등의 조건을 아래 표 1에 기재된 바와 같이 조절한 점을 제외하고는, 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 다공성 고분자 기재 및 다공성 코팅층 슬러리를 준비하고, 최종적으로 세퍼레이터를 제조하였다.
실시예 3
제1 무기물 입자, 제2 무기물 입자, 다공성 고분자 기재, 로딩 등의 조건을 아래 표 1에 기재된 바와 같이 조절한 점을 제외하고는, 아래 표 1에 기재된 바와 같이 변경한 점을 제외하고는 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 다공성 고분자 기재 및 다공성 코팅층 슬러리를 준비하고, 최종적으로 세퍼레이터를 제조하였다.
실시예 4
제1 무기물 입자, 제2 무기물 입자, 다공성 고분자 기재, 로딩 등의 조건을 아래 표 1에 기재된 바와 같이 조절한 점을 제외하고는, 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 다공성 고분자 기재 및 다공성 코팅층 슬러리를 준비하고, 최종적으로 세퍼레이터를 제조하였다.
비교예 1
제1 무기물 입자를 포함하지 않고 폴리에틸렌 (멜트 인덱스 0.49 g/10min)를 이용하여 단일층의 다공성 고분자 기재를 준비하고, 다공성 코팅층 슬러리에서 제2 무기물 입자로서 Al2O3 (모스 경도 9.0, 평균입경 500 nm) 입자를 사용하고, 아래 표 1의 제2 무기물 입자의 BET 비표면적, 다공성 코팅층 로딩 등의 조건을 적용한 것을 제외하고는 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 다공성 코팅층 슬러리를 준비하고, 최종적으로 세퍼레이터를 제조하였다.

비교예 3

비교예 18

세퍼레이터의 평가
실시예 1 내지 4 및 비교예 1 내지 18에서 제조된 세퍼레이터에 대해서 하기의 특성을 평가하고 표 1에 나타내었다.
(1) 두께 감소율
두께 측정기를 이용하여 하기 계산식을 이용하여 실시예 1 내지 4 및 비교예 1 내지 18에서 제조된 세퍼레이터의 다공성 고분자 기재 및 다공성 코팅층의 초기 두께 대비 라미네이션 후 감소한 두께(초기 두께 - 라미네이션 후 두께)의 비율로 계산하였다. 이때, 라미네이션은 핫 프레스(Hot Press)를 이용하여 90℃, 4MPa, 1초 동안의 조건으로 실시되었다.
두께 감소율(%) = [(초기 두께 - 라미네이션 후 두께)/(초기 두께)] X 100 (%)
(2) 절연파괴전압(BDV: Break Down Voltage) (V)
SUS mesh와 실시예 1 내지 4 및 비교예 1 내지 18에서 제조된 세퍼레이터를 90℃, 4MPa, 1s 조건으로 Hot press 접착 후 전압을 0V 부터 100V/s의 속도로 승압시켰을 때 6kV에 도달하거나, 3 초 동안 0.5mA 이상의 전류가 흐르지 않으면 절연이 파괴되었다고 판단하고, 이 때의 전압을 측정하였다. 이를 절연파괴전압으로 정의하였다.
(3) 전극접착력
활물질[천연흑연 및 인조흑연(중량비 5:5)], 도전재[super P], 바인더[폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드(PVdF)]를 92:2:6의 중량비로 혼합하고 물에 분산시킨 후 구리 호일에 코팅하여 애노드를 제조하고, 15mm X 100mm 크기로 재단하여 준비하였다.
실시예 1 내지 4 및 비교예 1 내지 18에서 제조된 세퍼레이터를 10mm X 100mm 크기로 재단하여 준비하였다.
준비된 세퍼레이터와 애노드를 서로 겹친 뒤 100㎛의 PET 필름 사이에 끼운 후 60℃, 6.5MPa, 1초 조건으로 핫 프레스로 가열하여 접착시켰다.
접착된 세퍼레이터와 애노드의 말단부를 UTM 장비(LLOYD Instrument LF Plus)에 장착 후 측정 속도 300mm/min의 속도로 180도 peel로 접착된 세퍼레이터가 분리되는 데 필요한 힘(전극접착력)을 측정하였다.
전극접착력이 50gf/25mm 이상 확보되어야 전극접착을 통한 전지 조립이 가능하였다.
(4) 다공성 코팅층 로딩
실시예 1 내지 4 및 비교예 1 내지 18에서 제조된 세퍼레이터에서, 다공성 고분자 기재 위에 코팅된 제2 무기물 입자 및 바인더 고분자의 단위 면적당 무게를 측정하였다.
(5) 통기도
Asahi seico社 EG01-55-1MR 장비를 사용하여 실시예 1 내지 4 및 비교예 1 내지 18에서 제조된 세퍼레이터의 통기도를 측정하였다. 통기도가 2000s/100cc 이상일 경우 전지 출력의 저하 및 cycle fading 의 원인이 될 수 있다.
(6) 저항
실시예 1 내지 4 및 비교예 1 내지 18에서 제조된 세퍼레이터를 전해액(에틸렌 카보네이트(EC):디에틸 카보네이트(DEC) = 3:7(부피비), LiPF6 1.0M)에 함침시킨 후 AC 저항을 측정하였다. 이 때, AC 저항은 후 EIS(Ametek사)로 1KHz에서의 저항을 측정한 값이다.
(7) 멜트 인덱스(Melt Index, MI)
실시예 1 내지 4 및 비교예 1 내지 18에서 제조된 세퍼레이터의 다공성 고분자 기재에 있어서, 21.6kg의 압력으로 10min 동안 용융된 다공성 고분자 기재에 사용된 고분자 수지의 토출양을 통해 고분자 수지의 멜트 인덱스(용융 흐름지수)를 측정하였다. 고분자 수지의 분자량이 클수록 MI가 낮았다.
(8) 박리강도
실시예 1 내지 4 및 비교예 1 내지 18에서 제조된 세퍼레이터를 15mm X 100mm의 크기로 재단하여 준비하였다. 유리판 위에 양면 접착 테이프를 붙이고, 재단하여 준비된 세퍼레이터의 다공성 코팅층 표면이 접착 테이프와 접착되도록 붙였다. 이후 접착된 세퍼레이터의 말단부를 UTM 장비 (LLOYD Instrument LF Plus)에 장착 후 측정 속도를 300 mm/min로 하여 180도(degree)도 힘을 가해 다공성 코팅층과 다공성 고분자 기재가 박리되는데 필요한 힘(박리 강도)를 측정하였다.
(9) 무기물 입자의 모스 경도
모스 경도'는 10종의 광물(모스 경도 1: 활석, 모스 경도 2: 석고, 모스 경도 3: 방해석, 모스 경도 4: 형석, 모스 경도 5: 인회석, 모스 경도 6: 정장석, 모스 경도 7: 석영, 모스 경도 8: 황옥, 모스 경도 9: 강옥, 모스 경도 10: 다이아몬드)을 표준 물질로서 이들과 비교한 경도를 평가한 값이다. 표준 물질과 대상 무기물 입자의 샘플을 비비어, 스크래치가 발생하는 쪽을 경도가 낮다고 하고 판정을 하였다.
(10) 제1 무기물 입자 및 제2 무기물 입자의 BET 비표면적
제1 무기물 입자 및 제2 무기물 입자의 BET 비표면적은 BEL Japan사의 BELSORP-mino II를 이용하여 액체 질소 온도 하(77K)에서의 질소가스 흡착량으로부터 산출하였다.
상기 표 1을 참조하면, 실시예 1 내지 4에 따른 세퍼레이터는 라미네이션 후 다공성 코팅층의 두께 감소율이 큰 반면 다공성 고분지 기재의 두께 감소율은 매우 작아서 다공성 고분자 기재의 변형이 보호될 수 있으며, 절연파괴전압이 1,000V 이상으로 높은 절연성을 나타내고, 또한 우수한 저항 특성을 보여주고 있음을 알 수 있다.
한편, 비교예 1 내지 6, 비교예 8, 비교예 17, 및 비교예 18에 따른 세퍼레이터는 절연파괴전압이 800V 이하의 낮은 값을 보여 절연성이 저하된 결과를 보였고, 비교예 7, 9, 및 11 내지 14에 따른 세퍼레이터는 높은 저항 값을 나타내고, 비교예 10, 15, 및 16에 따른 세퍼레이터는 다공성 기재 두께 감소율이 증가되어 다공성 기재가 변형되는 문제가 있음을 확인하였다.
Claims (13)
- 다수의 기공을 갖는 코어부 기재 및 상기 코어부 기재의 양면에 위치하는 다수의 기공을 갖는 스킨부 기재를 구비하고,상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재 모두 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하거나, 또는 상기 코어부 기재만 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하고,상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재 모두 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하는 경우, 상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%가 상기 스킨부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량% 보다 큰 다공성 고분자 기재; 및상기 다공성 고분자 기재의 적어도 일면에 위치되어 있으며, 다수의 제2 무기물 입자, 상기 제2 무기물 입자의 표면의 일부 또는 전부에 위치하여 상기 제2 무기물 입자 사이를 연결 및 고정시키는 바인더 고분자를 포함하는 다공성 코팅층;을 포함하고,상기 제1 무기물 입자의 모스 경도가 제2 무기물 입자의 모스 경도 보다 더 큰 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 제1 무기물 입자의 모스 경도가 5 이상이고, 상기 제2 무기물 입자의 모스 경도(MI)가 5 미만인 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 제1 무기물 입자가 산화규소(SiO), 이산화티탄(TiO2), 지르코니아(ZrO2), 알루미나(Al2O3), 황산바륨(BaSO4), 티탄산바륨(BaTiO3), 보헤마이트, 산화 아연, 산화 마그네슘, 수산화 마그네슘, 수산화 알루미늄, 또는 이들 중 적어도 2 이상의 혼합물을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 제2 무기물 입자가 황산바륨(BaSO4), 티탄산바륨(BaTiO3), 보헤마이트, 산화 아연, 산화 마그네슘, 수산화 마그네슘, 수산화 알루미늄, 또는 이들 중 적어도 2 이상의 혼합물을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재 모두 제1 무기물 입자를 포함하는 경우, 상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%가 상기 스킨부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량% 보다 20 내지 600 배 큰 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%가 10 내지 20 중량%인 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제5항에 있어서,상기 코어부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%가 10 내지 20 중량%이고, 상기 스킨부 기재 내의 제1 무기물 입자의 중량%가 0.1 내지 10 중량%인 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 제2 무기물 입자의 BET 비표면적이 5 내지 20 m2/g인 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재가 폴리올레핀계 다공성 고분자 기재인 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 코어부 기재 및 스킨부 기재의 멜트 인덱스(MI, Melt Index)가 0.2 g/10min 이하인 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 바인더 고분자가 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드-헥사플루오로프로필렌 (polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene), 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드-트리클로로에틸렌 (polyvinylidene fluoride-co-trichloroethylene), 폴리메틸메타크릴레이트 (polymethylmethacrylate), 폴리부틸아크릴레이트 (polybutylacrylate), 폴리부닐메타아크릴레이트 (polybutylmethacrylate), 폴리아크릴로니트릴 (polyacrylonitrile), 폴리비닐피롤리돈 (polyvinylpyrrolidone), 폴리비닐아세테이트 (polyvinylacetate), 에틸렌 비닐 아세테이트 공중합체 (polyethylene-co-vinyl acetate), 폴리에틸렌옥사이드 (polyethylene oxide), 폴리아릴레이트(polyarylate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 (cellulose acetate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 부틸레이트 (cellulose acetate butyrate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 프로피오네이트 (cellulose acetate propionate), 시아노에틸플루란 (cyanoethylpullulan), 시아노에틸폴리비닐알콜 (cyanoethylpolyvinylalcohol), 시아노에틸셀룰로오스 (cyanoethylcellulose), 시아노에틸수크로오스 (cyanoethylsucrose), 플루란 (pullulan), 카르복실 메틸 셀룰로오스 (carboxyl methyl cellulose), 또는 이들 중 2종 이상의 혼합물인 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 캐소드, 애노드, 상기 캐소드 및 애노드 사이에 개재된 세퍼레이터를 포함하는 전기화학소자에 있어서, 상기 세퍼레이터가 제1항 내지 제11항 중 어느 한 항의 세퍼레이터인 것을 특징으로 하는 전기화학소자.
- 제12항에 있어서,상기 전기화학소자가 리튬 이차전지인 것을 특징으로 하는 전기화학소자.
