Abstract
다수의 기공을 갖는 다공성 고분자 기재, 및 상기 다공성 고분자 기재의 적어도 일면 상에 위치하며, 다수의 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자를 포함하는 다공성 코팅층;을 구비하고, 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자가 고흡수성 고분자(super absorbent polymer)를 포함하는 코어부와 상기 코어부를 둘러싸고 있으며, 전해액 흡수성이 없고 80℃ 이상의 융점을 갖는 고분자를 포함하는 쉘부를 구비하는 세퍼레이터, 및 이를 포함하는 전기화학 소자가 제시된다.
Description
본 발명은 세퍼레이터 및 이를 포함하는 전기화학소자에 관한 것으로서, 전지 온도 상승시 우수한 안전성을 갖는 세퍼레이터 및 이를 포함하는 전기화학소자에 관한 것이다.
본 출원은 2020년 7월 17일에 출원된 한국출원 제10-2020-0089204호에 기초한 우선권을 주장하며, 해당 출원의 명세서에 개시된 모든 내용은 본 출원에 원용된다.
최근 에너지 저장 기술에 대한 관심이 갈수록 높아지고 있다. 휴대폰, 캠코더 및 노트북 PC, 나아가서는 전기 자동차의 에너지까지 적용분야가 확대되면서 전기화학소자의 연구와 개발에 대한 노력이 점점 구체화되고 있다. 전기화학소자는 이러한 측면에서 가장 주목 받고 있는 분야이고 그 중에서도 충방전이 가능한 이차전지의 개발은 관심의 초점이 되고 있으며, 최근에는 이러한 전지를 개발함에 있어서 용량 밀도 및 비에너지를 향상시키기 위하여 새로운 전극과 전지의 설계에 대한 연구개발로 진행되고 있다.
현재 적용되고 있는 이차전지 중에서 1990 년대 초에 개발된 리튬 이차전지는 수용액 전해액을 사용하는 Ni-MH, Ni-Cd, 황산-납 전지 등의 재래식 전지에 비해서 작동 전압이 높고 에너지 밀도가 월등히 크다는 장점으로 각광을 받고 있다. 그러나 이러한 리튬 이온 전지는 유기 전해액을 사용하는 데 따르는 발화 및 폭발 등의 안전 문제가 존재하고, 제조가 까다로운 단점이 있다.
최근의 리튬 이온 고분자 전지는 이러한 리튬 이온 전지의 약점을 개선하여 차세대 전지의 하나로 꼽히고 있으나 아직까지 전지의 용량이 리튬 이온 전지와 비교하여 상대적으로 낮고, 특히 저온에서의 방전 용량이 불충분하여 이에 대한 개선이 시급히 요구되고 있다.
상기와 같은 전기화학소자는 많은 회사에서 생산되고 있으나 그들의 안전성 특성은 각각 다른 양상을 보인다. 이러한 전기화학소자의 안전성 평가 및 안전성 확보는 매우 중요하다. 가장 중요한 고려사항은 전기화학소자가 오작동시 사용자에게 상해를 입혀서는 안 된다는 것이며, 이러한 목적으로 안전규격은 전기화학소자 내의 발화 및 발연 등을 엄격히 규제하고 있다. 전기화학소자의 안전성 특성에 있어서, 전기화학소자가 과열되어 열폭주가 일어나거나 세퍼레이터가 관통될 경우에는 폭발을 일으키게 될 우려가 크다. 특히, 전기화학소자의 세퍼레이터로서 통상적으로 사용되는 폴리올레핀계 다공성 고분자 기재는 재료적 특성과 연신을 포함하는 제조공정상의 특성으로 인하여 100℃ 이상의 온도에서 극심한 열 수축 거동을 보임으로서, 캐소드와 애노드 사이의 단락을 일으켰다.
이와 같은 전기화학소자의 안전성 문제를 해결하기 위하여, 다수의 기공을 갖는 다공성 고분자 기재의 적어도 일면에, 과량의 무기물 입자와 바인더 고분자의 혼합물을 코팅하여 다공성 유기-무기 코팅층을 형성한 세퍼레이터가 제안되었다.
종래의 폴리올레핀 계열의 세퍼레이터의 셧다운(shutdown)은 135 내지 160℃ 범위에서 발생하며 다공성 유기-무기 코팅층 등을 도입하더라도 이 온도 범위를 제어하기는 어렵고, 곧 바로 멜트다운(meltdown)으로 이어질 수 있어 전지의 안전성 확보가 어려운 문제가 있다.
세퍼레이터의 셧다운이 발생하더라도 외부 열원, 혹은 이미 높아진 전지 온도에 의하여 전해액이 발화되는 현상은 발생할 수 있기에 이를 방지할 수 있는 기술이 여전히 요구되고 있다.
따라서 본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 과제는, 전지 온도 상승시 우수한 안전성을 갖는 세퍼레이터를 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 또 다른 과제는 상기 세퍼레이터를 구비하는 전기화학소자를 제공하는 것이다.
상기 과제를 해결하기 위하여, 본 발명의 일 측면에 따르면, 하기 구현예의 세퍼레이터가 제공된다.
제1 구현예에 따르면,
다수의 기공을 갖는 다공성 고분자 기재, 및
상기 다공성 고분자 기재의 적어도 일면 상에 위치하며, 다수의 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자를 포함하는 다공성 코팅층;을 구비하고,
상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자가 고흡수성 고분자(super absorbent polymer)를 포함하는 코어부와 상기 코어부를 둘러싸고 있으며, 80℃ 이상의 융점을 갖는 저흡수성 고분자를 포함하는 쉘부를 구비하는 세퍼레이터가 제공된다.
제2 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예에 있어서,
상기 고흡수성 고분자가 자기 중량의 2 내지 50 배의 전해액을 흡수할 수 있다.
제3 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 또는 제2 구현예에 있어서,
상기 고흡수성 고분자가 녹말, 셀룰로오스, 아크릴계 중합체, 폴리비닐아세테이트, 또는 폴리에틸렌글리콜 중에서 선택된 1종 이상의 가교 고분자일 수 있다.
제4 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제3 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 저흡수성 고분자가 자기 중량의 2배 이하의 전해액을 흡수할 수 있다.
제5 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제4 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 저흡수성 고분자가 아크릴레이트계 중합체, 에스테르계 중합체, 올레핀계 중합체, 비닐플루오라이드계 중합체, 스티렌계 중합체, 불화올레핀계 중합체, 우레탄계 중합체, 페놀수지, 아미드계 중합체, 아라미드계 중합체, 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함하는 비가교 고분자 또는 가교 고분자일 수 있다.
제6 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제5 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 저흡수성 고분자가 폴리메틸(메타)아크릴레이트, 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 에틸렌프로필렌공중합체, 폴리스티렌, 폴리비닐플루오라이드(PVDF), 폴리테트라플루오르에틸렌(PTFE), 아라미드, 폴리카프로락탐(나일론 6), 폴리(11-아미노운데칸산)(나일론 11), 폴리라우릴락탐(나일론 12), 폴리헥사메틸렌 아디프아미드(나일론 6,6), 폴리헥사에틸렌 아젤아미드(나일론 6,9), 폴리헥사에틸렌 세바카미드(나일론 6,10), 폴리헥사에틸렌 도데카노디아미드(나일론 6,12), 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함하는 비가교 고분자 또는 가교 고분자일 수 있다.
제7 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제6 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자에서 상기 코어부 및 쉘부의 중량비는 84:16 내지 40:60일 수 있다.
제8 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제7 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자의 평균 직경 대비 코어부의 평균 직경의 비율이 10% 내지 90%일 수 있다.
제9 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제8 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 다공성 고분자 기재가 폴리올레핀계 다공성 고분자 기재일 수 있다.
제10 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제9 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 다공성 코팅층이 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자의 표면의 일부 또는 전부에 위치하여 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자 사이를 연결 및 고정시키는 바인더 고분자; 및 무기물 입자; 중 1 종 이상을 더 포함할 수 있다.
제11 구현예에 따르면, 제10 구현예에 있어서,

본 발명의 일 구현예에 따르면, 전기화학소자의 온도 상승 시 세퍼레이터의 다공성 코팅층 내 코어-쉘 형 고분자 입자의 쉘부가 용해되어 상기 코어부가 노출되고, 상기 코어부의 고흡수성 고분자가 상기 전해액을 흡수하여 상기 전해액 중의 리튬 이온의 이동을 차단하며, 상기 전해액의 흡수에 의해 부피가 팽창된 고흡수성 고분자에 의해 상기 세퍼레이터의 다공성 코팅층의 기공이 막혀져서 셧다운 현상을 일으킬 수 있다. 그 결과, 전지 온도가 상승하여도 전해액의 발화를 지연 또는 억제시켜 전기화학소자의 안전성을 향상시킬 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따르면, 세퍼레이터의 다공성 코팅층 내 코어-쉘 형 고분자 입자의 쉘부의 융점(Tm)을 조절하여 고흡수성 고분자가 작동하는 온도, 즉 셧다운 현상이 발생하는 온도를 제어할 수 있다.
본 명세서에 첨부되는 다음의 도면들은 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예를 예시하는 것이며, 전술한 발명의 내용과 함께 본 발명의 기술사상을 더욱 이해시키는 역할을 하는 것이므로, 본 발명은 그러한 도면에 기재된 사항에만 한정되어 해석되어서는 아니 된다.

이하, 본 발명을 도면을 참조하여 상세히 설명하기로 한다. 본 명세서 및 청구범위에 사용된 용어나 단어는 통상적이거나 사전적인 의미로 한정해서 해석되어서는 아니 되며, 발명자는 그 자신의 발명을 가장 최선의 방법으로 설명하기 위해 용어의 개념을 적절하게 정의할 수 있다는 원칙에 입각하여 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 부합하는 의미와 개념으로 해석되어야만 한다.
본 발명의 일 측면에 따른 세퍼레이터는, 다수의 기공을 갖는 다공성 고분자 기재, 및 상기 다공성 고분자 기재의 적어도 일면 상에 위치하며, 다수의 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자를 포함하는 다공성 코팅층;을 구비하고, 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자가 고흡수성 고분자(super absorbent polymer)를 포함하는 코어부와 상기 코어부를 둘러싸고 있으며, 80℃ 이상의 융점을 갖는 저흡수성 고분자를 포함하는 쉘부를 구비한다.
종래의 폴리올레핀 다공성 기재를 이용한 세퍼레이터에서는 다공성 고분자 기재의 기공 막힘 현상 즉 셧다운(shutdown)이 135 내지 160℃ 범위에서 발생한다. 상기 폴리올레핀 다공성 기재 상에 유기 바인더 고분자와 무기물 입자를 포함하는 다공성 유기-무기 코팅층 등을 도입하더라도 이러한 셧다운 온도 범위를 제어하기는 어렵고, 오히려 멜트다운(meltdown)으로 이어질 수 있어 전지의 안전성 확보가 어려운 문제가 있었다.
따라서, 세퍼레이터에서 셧다운이 발생하더라도 외부 열원, 또는 이미 높아진 전지 온도에 의하여 전해액이 발화되는 현상은 발생하는 문제가 있다.
이러한 문제점을 해결하고자, 본 발명의 발명자들은, 코어부로 고흡수성 고분자를 구비하는 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자를 이용하여 세퍼레이터의 다공성 코팅층를 형성하고, 종래의 세퍼레이터 보다 우수한 안전성을 가진 세퍼레이터를 제조할 수 있게 되었다.
도 1을 참조하면, 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 세퍼레이터의 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자(10)는 고흡수성 고분자(super absorbent polymer)를 포함하는 코어부(11)와 상기 코어부(11)를 둘러싸고 있으며, 80℃ 이상의 융점을 갖는 저흡수성 고분자를 포함하는 쉘부(12)를 구비한다.
도 2를 참조하면, 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 세퍼레이터(20)는 다공성 고분자 기재(21)의 일면에 위치하고, 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자(22)를 포함하는 다공성 코팅층(23)을 구비한다.
상기 고흡수성 고분자(super absorbent polymer, SAP)는 보통의 압력하에서도 자기 중량의 수배 이상과 동등한 양의 액체를 흡수하고 보유할 수 있는 고분자를 말한다.
구체적으로, 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 고흡수성 고분자는 자기 중량의 2 내지 50 배, 또는 10 내지 20 배의 전해액을 흡수하여 부피가 팽창할 수 있다.
상기 고흡수성 고분자의 예로는 녹말, 셀룰로오스, 아크릴계 중합체, 폴리비닐아세테이트, 또는 폴리에틸렌글리콜 중에서 선택된 1종 이상의 가교 고분자일 수 있다. 즉, 상기 고흡수성 고분자는 녹말, 셀룰로오스, 아크릴계 중합체, 폴리비닐아세테이트, 또는 폴리에틸렌글리콜 중에서 선택된 1종 이상의 고분자가 서로 가교결합된 가교 고분자일 수 있다. 이때, 상기 고흡수성 고분자는 단일 고분자가 가교결합된 가교 고분자일 수도 있고, 또는 2종 이상의 다른 고분자가 서로 가교결합된 가교 고분자일 수도 있다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따르면, 상기 고흡수성 고분자의 예인 아크릴계 중합체는 수용성 에틸렌계 불포화 단량체를 사용하며, 음이온성 단량체와 그 염, 비이온계 친수성 함유 단량체 및 아미노기 함유 불포화 단량체 및 그의 4급화물로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 하나 이상의 단량체를 사용할 수 있다. 수용성 에틸렌계 불포화 단량체를 나트륨염 등의 알칼리 금속염이나 가성소다와 같은 염기성 화합물을 사용하여 중화한 후 가교제, 중합 개시제를 포함하여 중합할 수 있는 액을 모노머 조성물이라고 한다. 상기의 모노머 조성물을 열중합 또는 광중합하여 함수겔상 중합체를 제조한 후, 건조하고 분쇄하고 분급하여 분말상의 제품으로 만들 수 있다. 이러한 고흡수성 폴리머는 통상적으로 약하게 가교된 친수성 중합체로서, 바람직한 양태에서, 상기 고흡수성 폴리머는 카르복실기, 인산기 및 설포닐기로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 기와 같은 친수성기를 포함할 수 있다. 상기 수용성 에틸렌계 불포화 단량체로는, 아크릴산, 메타크릴산, 무수말레인산, 푸말산, 크로톤산, 이타콘산, 2-아크릴로일에탄 술폰산, 2-메타크릴로일에탄술폰산, 2-(메트)아크릴로일프로판술폰산, 또는 2-(메트)아크릴아미드-2-메틸 프로판 술폰산의 음이온성 단량체와 이의 염; (메트)아크릴아미드, N-치환(메트)아크릴아미드, 2-히드록시에틸(메트)아크릴레이트, 2-히드록시프로필(메트)아크릴레이트, 메톡시폴리에틸렌글리콜(메트)아크릴레이트 또는 폴리에틸렌 글리콜(메트)아크릴레이트의 비이온계 친수성 함유 단량체; 및 (N,N)-디메틸아미노에틸(메트)아크릴레이트 또는 (N,N)-디메틸아미노프로필(메트)아크릴아미드의 아미노기 함유 불포화 단량체와 그의 4급화물;로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 1종 이상일 수 있다.
이중에서도, 아크릴산 또는 이의 염, 예를 들어, 아크릴산의 적어도 일부가 중화된 아크릴산 및/또는 이의 나트륨염 등의 알칼리 금속염을 사용할 수 있는데, 이러한 단량체를 사용하여 보다 우수한 물성을 갖는 고흡수성 수지의 제조가 가능해진다. 상기 아크릴산의 알칼리 금속염을 단량체로 사용하는 경우, 아크릴산을 가성소다(NaOH)와 같은 염기성 화합물로 중화시켜 사용할 수 있다. 이때, 상기 수용성 에틸렌계 불포화 단량체의 중화 정도는 약 50 내지 약 95%, 바람직하게는 약 70 내지 85%로 조절될 수 있고, 수용성 에틸렌계 불포화 단량체의 Na+에 의한 중화 정도가 중화 후 pH 5 내지 7 사이를 나타내는 것이 바람직하다. 이와 같이 중화도가 조절됨으로 인해 나트륨 이온의 농도차를 형성하는 경우, 삼투압 현상이 발생하여 많은 양의 물을 흡수할 수 있게 한다. 구체적인 실시예에서는 고흡수성 폴리머로서 GS-401을 사용하였다.
상기 쉘부는 상기 코어부를 둘러싸고 있으며, 80℃ 이상의 융점을 갖는 저흡수성 고분자를 포함한다. 이때, 저흡수성 고분자라 함은 자기 중량의 2배 이하, 즉 0배 내지 2배의 전해액을 흡수할 수 있는 고분자를 의미한다. 따라서, 저흡수성 고분자에는 전해액 흡수성이 전혀 없거나 낮은 고분자가 포함된다.
상기 쉘부는 정상적인 환경에서는 전해액 내 리튬 이온의 이동을 방해하지 않아야 하기 때문에 전해액 흡수성이 없거나, 낮은 저흡수성어야 한다. 상기 쉘부에 포함되는 저흡수성 고분자의 융점은 80℃ 이상, 또는 80 내지 240℃, 또는 140 내지 240℃, 또는 140 내지 160℃, 또는 200 내지 240℃일 수 있다. 상기 쉘부에 포함되는 고분자의 융점이 이러한 온도 범위를 만족하는 경우에 정상적인 환경에서 전지 성능을 확보하는 동시에 비정상적인 상황에서 전지 안정성을 향상시킬 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 세퍼레이터를 포함한 전기화학소자에 있어서, 상기 세퍼레이터의 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자에서 쉘부는 전기화학소자의 온도가 상승하는 경우에 용해되어 감싸고 있는 코어부의 고흡수성 고분자를 외부로 노출시킬 수 있고, 그 결과 상기 고흡수성 고분자가 전기화학소자 내의 전해액을 흡수하여 전해액 내의 이온의 이동을 차단하고, 전해액의 발화를 지연/억제시켜 전기화학소자의 안전성을 향상시킬 수 있게 된다.
상기 쉘부에 포함되는 저흡수성 고분자는 아크릴레이트계 중합체, 에스테르계 중합체, 올레핀계 중합체, 비닐플루오라이드계 중합체, 스티렌계 중합체, 불화올레핀계 중합체, 우레탄계 중합체, 페놀수지, 아미드계 중합체, 아라미드계 중합체 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함하는 비가교 고분자일 수 있고, 또는 아크릴레이트계 중합체, 에스테르계 중합체, 올레핀계 중합체, 비닐플루오라이드계 중합체, 스티렌계 중합체, 불화올레핀계 중합체, 우레탄계 중합체, 페놀수지, 아미드계 중합체, 아라미드계 중합체 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함하는 가교 고분자일 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따르면, 상기 쉘부는 폴리메틸(메타)아크릴레이트, 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 에틸렌프로필렌공중합체, 폴리스티렌, 폴리비닐플루오라이드(PVDF), 폴리테트라플루오르에틸렌(PTFE), 아라미드, 폴리카프로락탐(나일론 6), 폴리(11-아미노운데칸산)(나일론 11), 폴리라우릴락탐(나일론 12), 폴리헥사메틸렌 아디프아미드(나일론 6,6), 폴리헥사에틸렌 아젤아미드(나일론 6,9), 폴리헥사에틸렌 세바카미드(나일론 6,10), 폴리헥사에틸렌 도데카노디아미드(나일론 6,12), 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함하는 비가교 고분자 또는 가교 고분자일 수 있다.
상기 폴리메틸(메타)아크릴레이트로는 보다 구체적으로, 폴리(메타)아크릴레이트, 폴리알킬(메타)아크릴레이트, 알킬아크릴레이트-알킬(메타)아크릴레이트 공중합체, 폴리플루오로알킬(메타)아크릴레이트, 폴리아크릴로니트릴, 폴리에스테르, 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함할 수 있다. 여기서 알킬은 예를 들어 C1 내지 C30 알킬, C1 내지 C15 알킬, C1 내지 C10 알킬, 또는 C1 내지 C5 알킬일 수 있다.
상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자에서 코어부 및 쉘부의 중량비는 84:16 내지 40:60, 또는 80:20 내지 45:55, 또는 75:25 내지 50:50일 수 있다. 또한, 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자에서 코어부 및 쉘부의 중량비는 84:16 이상, 80:20 이상, 75:25 이상, 40:60 이하, 45:55 이하, 50:50 이하일 수 있다. 상기 코어부와 쉘부의 중량비가 이러한 범위를 만족하는 경우에 정상적인 환경에서 코어부의 고흡수성 고분자가 전해액을 흡수하지 않는 동시에 비정상적인 상황에서 고흡수성 고분자가 빠르게 전해액을 흡수하여 전지 내 이온의 이동을 차단할 수 있고, 쉘부가 코어부를 효과적으로 피복할 수 있어 추후 다공성 코팅층용 조성물 제조시 분산매와의 접촉에 의한 겔화 현상이 방지될 수 있다.
상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자의 평균 직경은 0.4 내지 1.2㎛, 또는 0.8 내지 1.2㎛, 또는 0.4 내지 0.6㎛일 수 있다. 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자의 평균 직경이 이러한 범위를 만족하는 경우에 다공성 코팅층을 박막화할 수 있고, 또한 다공성 코팅층에 무기물 입자를 더 포함하는 경우에 무기물 입자와 균일하게 혼합될 수 있다는 점에서 유리하다.
본 발명에 있어서 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자 및 후술하는 무기물 입자의 평균 직경(D50)은 직경 분포의 50% 기준에서의 직경으로 정의할 수 있다. 본 발명에 있어서 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자 및 무기물 입자의 평균 직경(D50)은 예를 들어, 주사전자 현미경(scanning electron microscopy, SEM) 또는 전계 방사형 전자 현미경(field emission scanning electron microscopy, FE-SEM) 등을 이용한 전자 현미경 관찰이나, 또는 레이저 회절법(laser diffraction method)을 이용하여 측정할 수 있다. 레이저 회절법에 의해 측정시, 보다 구체적으로는, 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자 또는 무기물 입자를 분산매 중에 분산시킨 후, 시판되는 레이저 회절 입도 측정 장치(예를 들어 Microtrac MT 3000)에 도입하여 약 28 kHz의 초음파를 출력 60 W로 조사한 후, 측정 장치 에 있어서의 직경 분포의 50% 기준에서의 평균 입자 직경(D50)을 산출할 수 있다
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따르면, 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자의 평균 직경 대비 코어부의 평균 직경의 비율은 10% 이상, 20% 이상, 30% 이상, 50% 이상, 60% 이상, 66.6% 이상, 90% 이하, 85% 이하, 80% 이하일 수 있다. 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자의 평균 직경 대비 코어부의 평균 직경의 비율이 이러한 범위를 만족하는 경우에, 정상적인 환경에서 코어부의 고흡수성 고분자가 전해액을 흡수하지 않는 동시에 비정상적인 상황에서 고흡수성 고분자가 빠르게 전해액을 흡수하여 전지 내 이온의 이동을 차단할 수 있다.
본 발명에서, 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자의 평균 직경, 무기물 입자의 평균 직경, 및 코어부의 평균 직경은 입자 사이즈 측정기기(말번社 레이저 입도분석기)를 사용하여 측정하고, 예를 들어, 코어 합성 후 코어부의 평균 직경을 측정하고, 쉘까지 합성 후 전체 입자의 평균 직경을 측정할 수 있다.
상기 다공성 고분자 기재는, 구체적으로 다공성 고분자 필름 기재 또는 다공성 고분자 부직포 기재일 수 있다.
상기 다공성 고분자 필름 기재로는 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌과 같은 폴리올레핀으로 이루어진 다공성 고분자 필름일 수 있으며, 이러한 폴리올레핀 다공성 고분자 필름 기재는 예를 들어 80 내지 130 ℃의 온도에서 셧다운 기능을 발현한다.
이때, 폴리올레핀 다공성 고분자 필름은 고밀도 폴리에틸렌, 선형 저밀도 폴리에틸렌, 저밀도 폴리에틸렌, 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌과 같은 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 폴리부틸렌, 폴리펜텐 등의 폴리올레핀계 고분자를 각각 단독 또는 이들의 2종 이상 혼합하여 고분자로 형성할 수 있다.
또한, 상기 다공성 고분자 필름 기재는 폴리올레핀 외에 폴리에스테르 등의 다양한 고분자들을 이용하여 필름 형상으로 성형하여 제조될 수도 있다. 또한, 상기 다공성 고분자 필름 기재는 2층 이상의 필름층이 적층된 구조로 형성될 수 있으며, 각 필름층은 전술한 폴리올레핀, 폴리에스테르 등의 고분자 단독으로 또는 이들을 2종 이상 혼합한 고분자로 형성될 수도 있다.
또한, 상기 다공성 고분자 필름 기재 및 다공성 부직포 기재는 상기와 같은 폴리올레핀계 외에 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트(polyethyleneterephthalate), 폴리부틸렌테레프탈레이트(polybutyleneterephthalate), 폴리에스테르(polyester), 폴리아세탈(polyacetal), 폴리아미드(polyamide), 폴리카보네이트(polycarbonate), 폴리이미드(polyimide), 폴리에테르에테르케톤(polyetheretherketone), 폴리에테르설폰(polyethersulfone), 폴리페닐렌옥사이드(polyphenyleneoxide), 폴리페닐렌설파이드(polyphenylenesulfide), 폴리에틸렌나프탈렌(polyethylenenaphthalene) 등을 각각 단독으로 또는 이들을 혼합한 고분자로 형성될 수 있다.
상기 다공성 고분자 기재의 두께는 특별히 제한되지 않으나, 상세하게는 1 내지 100 ㎛, 더욱 상세하게는 5 내지 50 ㎛이고, 다공성 고분자 기재에 존재하는 기공 크기 및 기공도 역시 특별히 제한되지 않으나 각각 0.01 내지 50 ㎛ 및 10 내지 95%인 것이 바람직하다.
상기 다공성 코팅층이 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자의 표면의 일부 또는 전부에 위치하여 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자 사이를 연결 및 고정시키는 바인더 고분자; 및 무기물 입자; 중 1 종 이상을 더 포함할 수 있다.
도 3을 참조하면, 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 세퍼레이터(30)는 다공성 고분자 기재(31)의 일면에 위치하고, 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자(32), 무기물 입자(33), 및 바인더 고분자(미도시)를 포함하는 다공성 코팅층(34)를 구비한다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 세퍼레이터에 있어서, 다공성 코팅층 형성에 사용되는 바인더 고분자로는 당 업계에서 다공성 코팅층 형성에 통상적으로 사용되는 고분자를 사용할 수 있다. 특히, 유리 전이 온도(glass transition temperature, Tg)가 -200 내지 200℃인 고분자를 사용할 수 있는데, 이는 최종적으로 형성되는 다공성 코팅층의 유연성 및 탄성 등과 같은 기계적 물성을 향상시킬 수 있기 때문이다. 이러한 바인더 고분자는 무기물 입자들 사이를 연결 및 안정하게 고정시켜주는 바인더 역할을 충실히 수행함으로써, 다공성 코팅층이 도입된 세퍼레이터의 기계적 물성 저하 방지에 기여한다.
또한, 상기 바인더 고분자는 이온 전도 능력을 반드시 가질 필요는 없으나, 이온 전도 능력을 갖는 고분자를 사용할 경우 전기화학소자의 성능을 더욱 향상시킬 수 있다. 따라서, 상기 바인더 고분자는 가능한 유전율 상수가 높은 것을 사용할 수 있다. 실제로 전해액에서 염의 해리도는 전해액 용매의 유전율 상수에 의존하기 때문에, 상기 바인더 고분자의 유전율 상수가 높을수록 전해질에서의 염 해리도를 향상시킬 수 있다. 이러한 바인더 고분자의 유전율 상수는 1.0 내지 100 (측정 주파수 = 1 kHz) 범위가 사용 가능하며, 특히 10 이상일 수 있다.
전술한 기능 이외에, 상기 바인더 고분자는 액체 전해액 함침시 겔화됨으로써 높은 전해액 팽윤도(degree of swelling)를 나타낼 수 있는 특징을 가질 수 있다. 이에 따라, 상기 바인더 고분자의 용해도 지수, 즉 힐더브랜드 용해도 지수(Hildebrand solubility parameter)는 15 내지 45 MPa1/2 또는 15 내지 25 MPa1/2 및 30 내지 45 MPa1/2 범위이다. 따라서, 폴리올레핀류와 같은 소수성 고분자들보다는 극성기를 많이 갖는 친수성 고분자들이 더 사용될 수 있다. 상기 용해도 지수가 15 MPa1/2 미만 및 45 MPa1/2를 초과할 경우, 통상적인 전지용 액체 전해액에 의해 팽윤(swelling)되기 어려울 수 있기 때문이다.
이러한 바인더 고분자의 비제한적인 예로는 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드-헥사플루오로프로필렌 (polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene), 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드-트리클로로에틸렌 (polyvinylidene fluoride-co-trichloroethylene), 폴리메틸메타크릴레이트 (polymethylmethacrylate), 폴리부틸아크릴레이트 (polybutylacrylate), 폴리부닐메타아크릴레이트 (polybutylmethacrylate), 폴리아크릴로니트릴 (polyacrylonitrile), 폴리비닐피롤리돈 (polyvinylpyrrolidone), 폴리비닐아세테이트 (polyvinylacetate), 에틸렌 비닐 아세테이트 공중합체 (polyethylene-co-vinyl acetate), 폴리에틸렌옥사이드 (polyethylene oxide), 폴리아릴레이트(polyarylate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 (cellulose acetate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 부틸레이트 (cellulose acetate butyrate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 프로피오네이트 (cellulose acetate propionate), 시아노에틸플루란 (cyanoethylpullulan), 시아노에틸폴리비닐알콜 (cyanoethylpolyvinylalcohol), 시아노에틸셀룰로오스 (cyanoethylcellulose), 시아노에틸수크로오스 (cyanoethylsucrose), 플루란 (pullulan) 및 카르복실 메틸 셀룰로오스 (carboxyl methyl cellulose)등을 들 수 있으며, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
본 발명에서는 무기물 입자의 비제한적인 예로는 유전율 상수가 5 이상 상세하게는 10 이상인 고유전율 무기물 입자, 리튬 이온 전달 능력을 갖는 무기물 입자 또는 이들의 혼합물을 들 수 있다.
상기 유전율 상수가 5 이상인 무기물 입자의 비제한적인 예로는 BaTiO3, Pb(Zr,Ti)O3(PZT), Pb1-xLaxZr1-yTiyO3(PLZT), PB(Mg3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3(PMN-PT), 하프니아(HfO2), SrTiO3, SnO2, CeO2, MgO, NiO, CaO, ZnO, ZrO2, Y2O3, Al2O3, TiO2, SiC, AlO(OH), Al2O3ㅇH2O, 또는 이들의 혼합물 등이 있다.
본원 명세서에서 '리튬 이온 전달 능력을 갖는 무기물 입자'는 리튬 원소를 함유하되 리튬을 저장하지 아니하고 리튬 이온을 이동시키는 기능을 갖는 무기물 입자를 지칭하는 것으로서, 리튬 이온 전달 능력을 갖는 무기물 입자의 비제한적인 예로는 리튬포스페이트(Li3PO4), 리튬티타늄포스페이트(LixTiy(PO4)3, 0<x<2, 0<y<3), 리튬알루미늄티타늄포스페이트(LixAlyTiz(PO4)3, 0 <x<2, 0<y<1, 0<z<3), 14Li2O-9Al2O3-38TiO2-39P2O5 등과 같은 (LiAlTiP)xOy 계열 글래스(glass) (0<x<4, 0<y<13), 리튬란탄티타네이트(LixLayTiO3, 0<x<2, 0<y<3), Li3.25Ge0.25P0.75S4 등과 같은 리튬게르마니움티오포스페이트(LixGeyPzSw, 0<x<4, 0<y<1, 0<z<1, 0<w<5), Li3N 등과 같은 리튬나이트라이드(LixNy, 0<x<4, 0<y<2), Li3PO4-Li2S-SiS2 등과 같은 SiS2 계열 glass(LixSiySz, 0<x<3, 0<y<2, 0<z<4), LiI-Li2S-P2S5 등과 같은 P2S5 계열 glass(LixPySz, 0<x<3, 0<y<3, 0<z<7) 또는 이들의 혼합물 등이 있다.
상기 다공성 코팅층의 두께는 특별히 제한되지 않으나, 상세하게는 1 내지 10 ㎛, 더욱 상세하게는 1.5 내지 6 ㎛이고, 상기 다공성 코팅층의 기공도 역시 특별히 제한되지 않으나 35 내지 65%인 것이 바람직하다.
상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자 및 무기물 입자의 중량비는 5:95 내지 80:20, 또는 20:80 내지 80:20, 또는 50:50 내지 80:20 일 수 있다. 상기 중량비가 이러한 범위를 만족하는 경우에, 다공성 코팅층의 내열 특성을 확보하면서 동시에 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자로 인해 전지 안정성을 개선할 수 있다.
상기 무기물 입자와 바인더 고분자의 중량비는 예를 들어 50:50 내지 99:1, 상세하게는 70:30 내지 95:5이다. 바인더 고분자에 대한 무기물 입자의 함량비가 상기 범위를 만족하는 경우, 바인더 고분자의 함량이 많아지게 되어 형성되는 코팅층의 기공 크기 및 기공도가 감소되는 문제가 방지될 수 있고, 바인더 고분자 함량이 적기 때문에 형성되는 코팅층의 내필링성이 약화되는 문제도 해소될 수 있다.
상기 다공성 코팅층의 전체 중량 100 중량부 기준으로 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자의 함량은 3 중량부 이상, 5 중량부 이상, 10 중량부 이상, 78 중량부 이하, 75 중량부 이하, 70 중량부 이하일 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 측면에 따른 세퍼레이터는 다공성 코팅층 성분으로 전술한 무기물 입자 및 고분자 이외에, 기타 첨가제를 더 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따르면, 상기 다공성 코팅층은 유기계 슬러리를 이용한 유계 코팅층 또는 수계 슬리러를 이용한 수계 코팅층일 수 있고, 이중 수계 코팅층의 경우 박막 코팅에 유리하고 세퍼레이터의 저항이 감소된다는 면에서 더 유리할 수 있다. 또한, 유기계 슬러리를 이용하는 경우에는 쉘부의 저흡수성 고분자가 용해되지 않는 슬러리용 유기 용제의 선택이 필요하다.
본 발명의 일 측면에 따른 세퍼레이터의 제조방법은 다공성 코팅층을 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자 단독으로 형성하는 경우와, 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자외에 바인더 고분자와 무기물 입자를 더 포함하는 경우로 나누어 보면 다음과 같다.
먼저, 다공성 코팅층을 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자 단독으로 형성하는 경우이다.
다공성 코팅층을 형성하기 위하여, 분산매에 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자를 첨가하고 이를 분산시켜 다공성 코팅층 형성용 조성물을 제조할 수 있다.
상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자는 유화중합 (emulsion polymerization), 현탁중합 (suspension polymerization), 괴상중합 (massive polymerization), 용액중합 (solution polymerization), 또는 벌크중합 (bulk polymerization) 등 공지된 다양한 방법에 의해 제조될 수 있으며, 일 예로 유화중합 방법에 의해 제조될 수 있다.
상기 다공성 코팅층 형성용 조성물을 상기 다공성 고분자 기재에 코팅하는 방법은 특별히 한정하지는 않지만, 슬랏 코팅이나 딥 코팅 방법을 사용하는 것이 바람직하다. 슬랏 코팅은 슬랏 다이를 통해 공급된 조성물이 기재의 전면에 도포되는 방식으로 정량 펌프에서 공급되는 유량에 따라 코팅층 두께의 조절이 가능하다. 또한 딥 코팅은 조성물이 들어있는 탱크에 기재를 담그어 코팅하는 방법으로, 조성물의 농도 및 조성물 탱크에서 기재를 꺼내는 속도에 따라 코팅층 두께의 조절이 가능하며 보다 정확한 코팅 두께 제어를 위해 침지 후 메이어바 등을 통해 후계량할 수 있다.
이렇게 다공성 코팅층 형성용 조성물이 코팅된 다공성 고분자 기재를 오븐과 같은 건조기를 이용하여 건조함으로써 다공성 고분자 기재의 적어도 일면 상에 형성된 다공성 코팅층을 형성하게 된다.
상기 다공성 코팅층 형성용 조성물을 상기 다공성 고분자 기재에 코팅한 후에, 90 내지 180℃, 더 상세하게는 100 내지 150℃에서 건조하여 분산매를 제거할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에서 상기 다공성 코팅층의 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자들은 실질적으로 서로 접촉한 상태에서 인터스티셜 볼륨(interstitial volume)을 형성할 수 있다. 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자들은 건조 과정에서 쉘부에 포함되는 고분자들이 바인더 고분자 역할을 하여, 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자들의 쉘부 사이를 서로 연결 및 고정시키고, 또한, 다공성 고분자 기재와 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자들 사이를 서로 연결시키게 하여 다공성 코팅층을 형성할 수 있다.
이때 인터스티셜 볼륨은 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자들에 의한 충진 구조(closed packed or densely packed)에서 실질적으로 접촉하는 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자들에 의해 한정되는 공간을 의미한다. 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자들 사이의 인터스티셜 볼륨은 빈 공간이 되어 다공성 코팅층의 기공을 형성할 수 있다.
이때 사용되는 분산매의 비제한적인 예로는 아세톤, 테트라하이드로퓨란, 메틸렌클로라이드, 클로로포름, 디메틸포름아미드, N-메틸-2-피롤리돈, 메틸에틸케톤, 시클로헥산, 메탄올, 에탄올, 이소프로필알코올, 프로판올 및 물 중에서 선택된 1종의 화합물 또는 2종 이상의 혼합물이 있을 수 있다.
다음으로, 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자외에 바인더 고분자와 무기물 입자를 더 포함히여 상기 다공성 코팅층을 형성하는 경우이다.
상기 다공성 코팅층을 형성하기 위하여, 바인더 고분자를 용매에 용해시킨 다음 무기물 입자 및 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자를 첨가하고 이를 분산시켜 다공성 코팅층 형성용 조성물을 제조할 수 있다. 무기물 입자들은 미리 소정의 평균입경을 갖도록 파쇄된 상태에서 첨가할 수 있으며, 또는 바인더 고분자의 용액에 무기물 입자 및 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자를 첨가한 후 무기물 입자를 볼밀법 등을 이용하여 소정의 평균입경을 갖도록 제어하면서 파쇄하여 분산시킬 수도 있다.
상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자를 제조하는 방법은 전술한 바와 같다.
상기 다공성 코팅층 형성용 조성물을 상기 다공성 고분자 기재에 코팅하는 방법은 특별히 한정하지는 않지만, 슬랏 코팅이나 딥 코팅 방법을 사용하는 것이 바람직하다. 슬랏 코팅은 슬랏 다이를 통해 공급된 조성물이 기재의 전면에 도포되는 방식으로 정량 펌프에서 공급되는 유량에 따라 코팅층 두께의 조절이 가능하다. 또한 딥 코팅은 조성물이 들어있는 탱크에 기재를 담그어 코팅하는 방법으로, 조성물의 농도 및 조성물 탱크에서 기재를 꺼내는 속도에 따라 코팅층 두께의 조절이 가능하며 보다 정확한 코팅 두께 제어를 위해 침지 후 메이어바 등을 통해 후계량할 수 있다.
이렇게 다공성 코팅층 형성용 조성물이 코팅된 다공성 고분자 기재를 오븐과 같은 건조기를 이용하여 건조함으로써 다공성 고분자 기재의 적어도 일면 상에 형성된 다공성 코팅층을 형성하게 된다.
본 발명의 구체적인 일 실시양태에서 상기 다공성 코팅층의 바인더는 무기물 입자 및 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자들이 서로 결착된 상태를 유지할 수 있도록 이들을 서로 부착(즉, 바인더가 무기물 입자 및 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자 사이를 연결 및 고정)시킬 수 있으며, 또한 상기 바인더에 의해 무기물 입자 및 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자와 다공성 고분자 기재가 결착된 상태를 유지할 수 있다. 상기 다공성 코팅층의 무기물 입자 및 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자들은 실질적으로 서로 접촉한 상태에서 인터스티셜 볼륨(interstitial volume)을 형성할 수 있고, 이때 인터스티셜 볼륨은 무기물 입자 및 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자들에 의한 충진 구조(closed packed or densely packed)에서 실질적으로 접촉하는 무기물 입자 및 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자들에 의해 한정되는 공간을 의미한다. 상기 무기물 입자 및 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자 사이의 인터스티셜 볼륨은 빈 공간이 되어 다공성 코팅층의 기공을 형성할 수 있다. 이때, 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자들은 건조 과정에서 쉘부에 포함되는 고분자들이 바인더 고분자 역할을 하여, 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자들의 쉘부 사이를 서로 연결 및 고정시키고, 또한, 다공성 고분자 기재와 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자들 사이를 서로 연결시키게 하여 다공성 코팅층을 형성할 수 있다.

본 발명의 일 측면에 따른 전기화학소자는 캐소드, 애노드, 상기 캐소드 및 애노드 사이에 개재된 세퍼레이터를 포함하고, 상기 세퍼레이터가 전술한 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 세퍼레이터이다.
이러한 전기화학소자는 전기 화학 반응을 하는 모든 소자를 포함하며, 구체적인 예를 들면, 모든 종류의 1차, 이차 전지, 연료 전지, 태양 전지 또는 수퍼 캐패시터 소자와 같은 캐퍼시터(capacitor) 등이 있다. 특히, 상기 2차 전지 중 리튬 금속 이차 전지, 리튬 이온 이차 전지, 리튬 폴리머 이차 전지 또는 리튬 이온 폴리머 이차 전지 등을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지가 바람직하다.
본 발명의 세퍼레이터와 함께 적용될 캐소드와 애노드의 양 전극으로는 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 당업계에 알려진 통상적인 방법에 따라 전극활물질을 전극 전류집전체에 결착된 형태로 제조할 수 있다. 상기 전극활물질 중 캐소드활물질의 비제한적인 예로는 종래 전기화학소자의 캐소드에 사용될 수 있는 통상적인 캐소드활물질이 사용 가능하며, 특히 리튬망간산화물, 리튬코발트산화물, 리튬니켈산화물, 리튬철산화물 또는 이들을 조합한 리튬복합산화물을 사용하는 것이 바람직하다. 애노드활물질의 비제한적인 예로는 종래 전기화학소자의 애노드에 사용될 수 있는 통상적인 애노드활물질이 사용 가능하며, 특히 리튬 금속 또는 리튬 합금, 탄소, 석유코크(petroleum coke), 활성화 탄소(activated carbon), 그래파이트(graphite) 또는 기타 탄소류 등과 같은 리튬 흡착물질 등이 바람직하다. 캐소드 전류집전체의 비제한적인 예로는 알루미늄, 니켈 또는 이들의 조합에 의하여 제조되는 호일 등이 있으며, 애노드 전류집전체의 비제한적인 예로는 구리, 금, 니켈 또는 구리 합금 또는 이들의 조합에 의하여 제조되는 호일 등이 있다.
본 발명의 전기화학소자에서 사용될 수 있는 전해액은 A+B-와 같은 구조의 염으로서, A+는 Li+, Na+, K+와 같은 알칼리 금속 양이온 또는 이들의 조합으로 이루어진 이온을 포함하고 B-는 PF6

상기 전해액 주입은 최종 제품의 제조 공정 및 요구 물성에 따라, 전지 제조 공정 중 적절한 단계에서 행해질 수 있다. 즉, 전지 조립 전 또는 전지 조립 최종 단계 등에서 적용될 수 있다.
도 4 및 도 5는 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 세퍼레이터의 온도 상승에 따른 모식도이다.
구체적으로, 도 4 및 도 5는 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 세퍼레이터를 캐소드 및 애노드 사이에 개재하고, 전해액을 주입하여 전기화학소자(예를 들어 리튬 이차전지)를 제조한 후, 전기화학소자의 온도 상승에 따른 세퍼레이터의 다공성 코팅층 내의 변화를 나타낸 모식도이다.
도 4의 (a)를 참조하면, 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 세퍼레이터는 다공성 고분자 기재(110)의 일면에 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자(120)를 포함하는 다공성 코팅층(140)을 구비하고 있다.
도 4의 (b)를 참조하면, 전기화학소자 내의 온도 상승에 따라서, 상기 세퍼레이터의 다공성 코팅층(240) 내에서 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자(240)에서 쉘부의 융점 이상의 온도가 되는 경우에, 상기 쉘부가 융융되어 제거됨으로써 코어부가 외부로 노출되어 전해액과 접촉할 수 있게 되는 형태가 된다.
도 4의 (c)를 참조하면, 이렇게 외부로 노출된 코어부의 고흡수성 고분자가 전해액을 흡수하여 부피가 팽창된 결과, 상기 세퍼레이터의 다공성 코팅층의 기공을 막어 셧다운 현상을 일으킨다.
도 5의 (a)를 참조하면, 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 세퍼레이터는 다공성 고분자 기재(110)의 일면에 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자(120), 무기물 입자(130), 및 바인더 고분자(미도시)를 포함하는 다공성 코팅층(150)을 구비하고 있다.
도 5의 (b)를 참조하면, 전기화학소자 내의 온도 상승에 따라서, 상기 세퍼레이터의 다공성 코팅층(250) 내에서 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자(240)에서 쉘부의 융점 이상의 온도가 되는 경우에, 상기 쉘부가 융융되어 제거됨으로써 코어부가 외부로 노출되어 전해액과 접촉할 수 있게 되는 형태가 된다.
도 5의 (c)를 참조하면, 이렇게 외부로 노출된 코어부의 고흡수성 고분자가 전해액을 흡수하여 부피가 팽창된 결과, 상기 세퍼레이터의 다공성 코팅층의 기공을 막어 셧다운 현상을 일으킨다.
이하, 본 발명을 구체적으로 설명하기 위해 실시예를 들어 상세하게 설명하기로 한다. 그러나, 본 발명에 따른 실시예는 여러 가지 다른 형태로 변형될 수 있으며, 본 발명의 범위가 아래에서 상술하는 실시예에 한정되는 것으로 해석되어서는 안 된다. 본 발명의 실시예는 당업계에서 평균적인 지식을 가진 자에게 본 발명을 보다 완전하게 설명하기 위해서 제공되는 것이다.
<코어-쉘형 고분자 입자의 제조>
제조예 1
코어-쉘형 고분자 입자는 고흡수성 고분자로 폴리아크릴산 가교 고분자를 포함하는 코어부와 상기 코어부를 둘러싸고 있으며, 80℃ 이상의 융점을 갖는 저흡수성 고분자로 폴리아크릴레이트를 포함하는 쉘부를 구비하였다. 구체적은 제조방법은 다음과 같다.
먼저, 증류수 100 중량부에 중화제로 에틸렌디아민테트라아세트산 디소디움염(Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt, EDTA-Na2) 분말 0.3 중량부, 및 폴리아크릴산 50 중량부를 투입한 후 상온에서 1시간 동안 교반하였다. 이후, 여기에 가교제로 트리에틸아민 3 중량부를 넣은 후 상온에서 1시간 동안 교반하여 중화하여 고흡수성 고분자 코어 입자를 준비하였다.
앞서 준비된 코어 입자 조성물 200 중량부(코어 입자 10 중량부 포함)에 메틸메타아크릴레이트 7 중량부, n-부틸아크릴레이트 3 중량부, 개시제로 AIBN((Azobisisobutyronitrile) 0.05 중량부를 투입하였다. 이후 이를 70℃에서 12 시간 동안 교반하여 저흡수성 고분자로 메틸메타아크릴레이트와 n-부틸아크릴레이트의 공중합체를 포함하는 쉘부를 구비한 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자를 제조하였다.
이때, 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자의 평균 직경은 300 nm이었고, 상기 코어부의 평균 직경은 200 nm이었고, 상기 쉘부에 포함된 저흡수성 고분자의 융점은 85℃이었다.
쉘부의 융점 측정 방법은 다음과 같다.
시차주사열량계(Differential Scanning Calorimeter, DSC, 장치명: DSC 2920, 제조사: TA instrument)를 이용하여 쉘부에 포함된 저흡수성 고분자의 용점을 측정하였다. 구체적으로, 고분자를 220℃까지 가열한 후 5분 동안 그 온도를 유지하고, 다시 20℃까지 냉각한 후 다시 온도를 증가시켰으며, 이때 온도의 상승 속도와 하강 속도는 각각 10℃/min으로 조절하였다. 제조예 2 및 3의 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자의 쉘부에 포함된 저흡수성 고분자의 융점도 동일한 방법으로 측정하였다.
제조예 2
제조예 1에서 준비된 코어 입자 조성물 200 중량부(코어 입자 10 중량부 포함)에 메틸메타아크릴레이트 8.5 중량부, n-부틸아크릴레이트 1.5 중량부, 개시제로 AIBN((Azobisisobutyronitrile) 0.05 중량부를 투입하였다. 이후 이를 70℃에서 12 시간 동안 교반하여 저흡수성 고분자로 메틸메타아크릴레이트와 n-부틸아크릴레이트의 공중합체를 포함하는 쉘부를 구비한 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자를 제조하였다.
이때, 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자의 평균 직경은 300 nm이었고, 상기 코어부의 평균 직경은 200 nm이었고, 상기 쉘부에 포함된 저흡수성 고분자의 융점은 105℃이었다.
제조예 3
제조예 1에서 준비된 코어 입자 조성물 200 중량부(코어 입자 10 중량부 포함)에 메틸메타아크릴레이트 1.5 중량부, n-부틸아크릴레이트 0.25 중량부, 개시제로 AIBN((Azobisisobutyronitrile) 0.05 중량부를 투입하였다. 이후 이를 70℃에서 12 시간 동안 교반하여 저흡수성 고분자로 메틸메타아크릴레이트와 n-부틸아크릴레이트의 공중합체를 포함하는 쉘부를 구비한 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자를 제조하였다.
이때, 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자의 평균 직경은 250 nm이었고, 상기 코어부의 평균 직경은 200 nm이었고, 상기 쉘부에 포함된 저흡수성 고분자의 융점은 105℃이었다.
실시예 1
제조예 1의 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자, 무기 입자로 알루미나 입자 (AES11(D50: 500nm), Sumitomo社), 바인더 고분자로 아크릴계 라텍스(TOYOCHEM CO. CSB-130), 바인더 고분자겸 분산제로 카르복실메틸셀룰로오스(GL Chem SG-L02)를 10:88:1:1의 중량비로 분산매인 물에 혼합하여 다공성 코팅층용 조성물을 준비하였다. 이때 상기 다공성 코팅층용 조성물의 고형분은 35 중량%였다.
상기 다공성 코팅층용 조성물을 다공성 고분자 기재로 폴리프로필렌 필름 (Senior사, SD216C, 두께 16㎛, 통기도 310 Gurley, 기공도 35%, 중량 9.5 g/m2)의 양면에 코팅하고 70℃에서 30분 동안 건조하여 다공성 코팅층을 다공성 고분자 기재의 양면에 형성된 세퍼레이터를 제조하였다.
실시예 2

비교예 1
제조예 1의 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자를 사용하지 않고, 무기 입자로 알루미나 입자 (AES11(D50: 500nm), Sumitomo社), 바인더 고분자로 아크릴계 라텍스(TOYOCHEM CO. CSB-130), 바인더 고분자겸 분산제로 카르복실메틸셀룰로오스(GL Chem SG-L02)를 98:1:1의 중량비로 분산매인 물에 혼합하여 다공성 코팅층용 조성물을 준비한 점을 제외하고는 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 세퍼레이터를 제조하였다.
특성 평가
실시예 1 내지 6 및 비교예 1에서 제조된 세퍼레이터의 특성 평가를 진행하고, 그 결과를 하기 표 1에 나타내었다.

상기 표 1에서 통기도, 박리 강도 및 코인 셀의 전기 저항(ER)은 하기의 방법으로 측정하였다.
통기도
통기도(걸리)는 ASTM D726-94 방법에 의해 측정하였다. 여기서 사용된 걸리는, 공기의 흐름에 대한 저항으로서, 걸리 덴소미터(densometer)에 의해 측정되었다. 여기서 측정 결과인 걸리는 100 cc의 공기가 12.2 inH2O의 압력하에서, 실시예 1 내지 6 및 비교예 1에서 제조된 세퍼레이터 1 in2의 단면을 통과하는 데 걸리는 시간(초), 즉 통기시간으로 나타내었다.
박리 강도
실시예 1 내지 6 및 비교예 1에서 제조된 세퍼레이터를 15mm X 100mm 크기로 재단하였다. 유리판 위에 양면 접착 테이프를 붙이고 준비된 세퍼레이터의 다공성 코팅층 표면이 접착테이프와 접착되도록 붙였다. 이 후, 접착된 세퍼레이터의 말단부를 UTM 장비(LLOYD Instrument LF Plus)에 장착 후 측정 속도 300mm/min으로 180도로 힘을 가해 다공성 코팅층과 다공성 고분자 기재가 박리되는데 필요한 힘을 측정하였다.
코인 셀의 전기저항(ER)
실시예 1 내지 6 및 비교예 1에서 제조된 세퍼레이터와 전해액(에틸렌 카보네이트(EC):디에틸 카보네이트(DEC) = 3:7, LiPF6 1.0M)을 코인 셀 케이스에 내장하여 코인 셀을 각각 제조한 후, 상기 코인 셀의 AC 저항을 25℃에서 측정하고, 그 결과를 표 1에 나타내었다. 이 때, AC 저항은 EIS(Ametek사)로 1KHz에서의 저항을 측정한 값이다.
셧다운 온도 평가
상기 코인 셀의 전기저항 평가란에 기술된 방법과 동일한 방법으로 제조된 코인 셀을 70℃에서 190℃까지 10℃씩 승온시킨 오븐에서 5분 동안 보관하고, 30 분 동안 냉각시킨 후 AC 저항을 각각 측정하고, 각 온도에서 측정된 저항값과 25℃에서 측정된 저항값의 차이를 Y축으로 하여 도 6에 나타내었다. 이 때, AC 저항은 EIS(Ametek사)로 1KHz에서의 저항을 측정한 값이다.
도 6을 참조하면, 비교예 1의 세퍼레이터는 170℃ 이후 저항값의 증가가 확인되므로 이때 셧다운이 시작하였다. 한편, 실시예 1 내지 6의 세퍼레이터는 코어-셀형 고분자 입자의 쉘부에 포함된 저흡수성 고분자의 융점 부근에서 저흡수성 고분자가 소실되어 코어부의 고흡수성 고분자가 외부로 노출되고, 그 결과 전해액을 흡수하고 부피가 팽창하여 다고성 코팅층의 기공을 막게 되어 셧다운이 시작하였다. 이로부터 쉘부에 포함된 저흡수성 고분자의 융점을 조절하여 세퍼레이터의 셧다운 온도를 조절할 수 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다.
Claims (14)
- 다수의 기공을 갖는 다공성 고분자 기재, 및상기 다공성 고분자 기재의 적어도 일면 상에 위치하며, 다수의 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자를 포함하는 다공성 코팅층;을 구비하고,상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자가 고흡수성 고분자(super absorbent polymer)를 포함하는 코어부와 상기 코어부를 둘러싸고 있으며, 80℃ 이상의 융점을 갖는 저흡수성 고분자를 포함하는 쉘부를 구비하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 고흡수성 고분자가 자기 중량의 2 내지 50 배의 전해액을 흡수할 수 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 고흡수성 고분자가 녹말, 셀룰로오스, 아크릴계 중합체, 폴리비닐아세테이트, 또는 폴리에틸렌글리콜 중에서 선택된 1종 이상의 가교 고분자인 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 저흡수성 고분자가 자기 중량의 2배 이하의 전해액을 흡수할 수 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 저흡수성 고분자가 아크릴레이트계 중합체, 에스테르계 중합체, 올레핀계 중합체, 비닐플루오라이드계 중합체, 스티렌계 중합체, 불화올레핀계 중합체, 우레탄계 중합체, 페놀수지, 아미드계 중합체, 아라미드계 중합체, 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함하는 비가교 고분자 또는 가교 고분자인 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제5항에 있어서,상기 저흡수성 고분자가 폴리메틸(메타)아크릴레이트, 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 에틸렌프로필렌공중합체, 폴리스티렌, 폴리비닐플루오라이드(PVDF), 폴리테트라플루오르에틸렌(PTFE), 아라미드, 폴리카프로락탐(나일론 6), 폴리(11-아미노운데칸산)(나일론 11), 폴리라우릴락탐(나일론 12), 폴리헥사메틸렌 아디프아미드(나일론 6,6), 폴리헥사에틸렌 아젤아미드(나일론 6,9), 폴리헥사에틸렌 세바카미드(나일론 6,10), 폴리헥사에틸렌 도데카노디아미드(나일론 6,12), 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함하는 비가교 고분자 또는 가교 고분자인 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자에서 상기 코어부 및 쉘부의 중량비는 84:16 내지 40:60인 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자의 평균 직경 대비 코어부의 평균 직경의 비율이 10% 내지 90%인 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 다공성 고분자 기재가 폴리올레핀계 다공성 고분자 기재인 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 다공성 코팅층이 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자의 표면의 일부 또는 전부에 위치하여 상기 코어-쉘형 고분자 입자 사이를 연결 및 고정시키는 바인더 고분자; 및 무기물 입자; 중 1 종 이상을 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제10항에 있어서,상기 바인더 고분자가 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드-헥사플루오로프로필렌 (polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene), 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드-트리클로로에틸렌 (polyvinylidene fluoride-co-trichloroethylene), 폴리메틸메타크릴레이트 (polymethylmethacrylate), 폴리부틸아크릴레이트 (polybutylacrylate), 폴리부닐메타아크릴레이트 (polybutylmethacrylate), 폴리아크릴로니트릴 (polyacrylonitrile), 폴리비닐피롤리돈 (polyvinylpyrrolidone), 폴리비닐아세테이트 (polyvinylacetate), 에틸렌 비닐 아세테이트 공중합체 (polyethylene-co-vinyl acetate), 폴리에틸렌옥사이드 (polyethylene oxide), 폴리아릴레이트(polyarylate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 (cellulose acetate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 부틸레이트 (cellulose acetate butyrate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 프로피오네이트 (cellulose acetate propionate), 시아노에틸플루란 (cyanoethylpullulan), 시아노에틸폴리비닐알콜 (cyanoethylpolyvinylalcohol), 시아노에틸셀룰로오스 (cyanoethylcellulose), 시아노에틸수크로오스 (cyanoethylsucrose), 플루란 (pullulan), 카르복실메틸 셀룰로오스 (carboxyl methyl cellulose), 또는 이들 중 2종 이상의 혼합물인 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 제10항에 있어서,상기 무기물 입자가 유전율 상수가 5 이상인 무기물 입자, 리튬 이온 전달 능력을 갖는 무기물 입자, 또는 이들의 혼합물인 것을 특징으로 하는 세퍼레이터.
- 캐소드, 애노드, 상기 캐소드 및 애노드 사이에 개재된 세퍼레이터를 포함하는 전기화학소자에 있어서, 상기 세퍼레이터가 제1항 내지 제12항 중 어느 한 항의 세퍼레이터인 것을 특징으로 하는 전기화학소자.
- 제13항에 있어서,상기 전기화학소자가 리튬 이차전지인 것을 특징으로 하는 전기화학소자.
