Abstract

Additional protection device (10, 30, 35) for an occupant of a larger vehicle, such as a lorry, where the vehicle has at least one vehicle seat (11) and a seat belt (15), where the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) is arranged in the vicinity of that side of the vehicle seat (11) which is towards the interior of the vehicle and where the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) can be moved between a retracted position and an active position. The additional protection device (10, 30, 35) consists of an arm (20, 31, 36), where the arm (20, 31, 36) is mainly horizontal, when the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) is in the active position and the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) has a resilient element (26), where the resilient element (26) is attached to the arm (20, 31, 36) and where the resilient element (26) extends to a lower attachment (27), where the lower attachment (27) is on that side of the vehicle seat (11) which is towards the interior of the vehicle. The arm (20, 31, 36) of the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) is in the active position intended to be at the height of the shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11), so that the shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) can pass under the arm (20, 31, 36) of the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) when the vehicle rolls over, when the vehicle rotates around an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle. The resilient element (26) of the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) will catch the shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) and the resilient element (26) of the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) has a reinforcement (40, 41) at least on that side of the resilient element (26) which is forward, seen in the normal direction of travel of the vehicle. The resilient element (26) of the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) and the seat belt (15) prevent that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) leaving the vehicle seat (11) in a traffic accident, where the vehicle rolls over, rotates around an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle.

Description

ADDITIONAL PROTECTION DEVICE FOR AN OCCUPANT OF A LARGER VEHICLE.
TECHNICAL FIELD
The invention is related to an additional protection device for an occupant of a larger vehicle, such as a lorry, where the vehicle has at least one vehicle seat with a safety belt. The additional protection device together with the seat belt will prevent that one, sitting on the vehicle seat, from leaving the vehicle seat, when the vehicle is involved in a traffic accident where the vehicle rolls over and will be resting on one side, when the vehicle has rotated a quarter of a turn around an axis which is along the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, and makes it possible for that one sitting on the vehicle seat, which will be upwards when the vehicle has rolled over, to leave the vehicle seat easily without risk for injury, when the vehicle stopped rotating around an axis which is along the normal direction of travel of the vehicle.
STATE OF THE ART
It is known to use safety belts in vehicles, where the safety belt is mounted on the vehicle seat or mounted to the vehicle next to the vehicle seat. In a traffic accident, such as a frontal collision, the safety belt will catch that one sitting on the vehicle seat, so that one sitting on the vehicle seat avoids injuries or so that the injuries are reduced.
l In traffic accidents with larger vehicles, such as lorries, it is common that the vehicle rolls over, that the vehicle rotates round an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle.
Publication US 7,464,962 is showing an arrangement for a larger vehicle, such as a lorry, where a net is arranged on that side of a vehicle seat, which is towards the interior of the vehicle. The net prevents that one sitting on the vehicle seat which is upwards when the vehicle rolls over, when the vehicle has rotated a quarter of a turn around an axis which is parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, to fall from the vehicle seat and land on that side of the vehicle which is downwards.
Publication US 9,333,931 is showing and describing a protection device for an occupant sitting on one of the front seats of a vehicle, such as a passenger seat, at an oblique impact, an impact that occurs at an angle of 10 - 50 degrees relative to the vehicles normal direction of travel, where that one sitting on one of the front seats will move forward and sideways in relation to the normal direction of travel of the vehicle. The protection device takes up some of the momentum from that one sitting on a front seat at an oblique impact and directs that one sitting on the seat to an airbag.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The purpose of the invention is to bring about a protection for occupants of larger vehicles, such as lorries, when the vehicle in a traffic accident rolls over and will be resting on one side, when the vehicle has rotated a quarter of a turn around an axis which is parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, and to make it possible for that one sitting on the vehicle seat which is upwards when the vehicle has rolled over, when the vehicle has rotated a quarter of a turn around an axis which is parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, to leave the vehicle seat easily and quickly without risk for injuries. If that one sitting on the vehicle seat which will be upwards when the vehicle has turned over, is using a standard seat belt with two fixing points on that side of the vehicle seat which is towards the side of the vehicle and with one fixing point on that side of the vehicle seat which is towards the interior of the vehicle, the seat belt will function very well under the period the speed of the vehicle is reduced, but when the vehicle is rolling over and will be resting on one side, when the vehicle has rotated a quarter of a turn around an axis which is parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, that one sitting on the vehicle seat which is upwards will slide out of the diagonal section of the seat belt, that section of the seat belt which covers the upper torso of that one sitting on the vehicle seat, and that one sitting on the vehicle seat will be hanging by the hip section of the seat belt If that one sitting on the vehicle seat which is upwards, when the vehicle has rolled over, manages to open the seat belt buckle that one sitting on the vehicle seat which is upwards will free fall towards that side of the vehicle which is downwards and the risk for injury is very substantial.
If that one sitting on the vehicle seat which is upwards when the vehicle has rolled over, when the vehicle has rotated a quarter of a turn around an axis which is parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, can not open the seat belt buckle, that one sitting on the vehicle seat which is upwards, when the vehicle has rotated a quarter of a turn around an axis which is parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, must wait for help to get away from the vehicle seat. That can have catastrophic consequences if the vehicle is transporting dangerous goods, such as flammable goods. The same applies if the vehicle for some reason starts to burn after the vehicle has rolled over.
With an additional protection device according to the invention that one sitting on the vehicle seat which is upwards when the vehicle rolls over, when the vehicle has rotated a quarter of a turn around an axis which is parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, will not slide out of the diagonal section of the seat belt or be hanging in the seat belt. When the vehicle finished rotating around an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, that one sitting on the vehicle seat which is upwards will be held in place by the hip section of the seat belt, the diagonal section of the seat belt and of the additional protection device. That one sitting on the vehicle seat, which is upwards, can when the movement of the vehicle has come to en end, disengage from the seat belt and move down to that side of the vehicle which is downwards, without risk for injuries, and thereafter leaving the vehicle fast
The additional protection device is arranged on that side of the vehicle seat which is towards the interior of the vehicle and has an arm which is arranged at or over the shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat, when the additional protection device is in active position, and has a resilient element arranged between the arm and a lower attachment When the vehicle rolls over and that one sitting on the vehicle seat moves towards the interior of the vehicle the shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat will move in under the arm of the additional protection device and be caught by the resilient element. That one sitting on the vehicle seat will be held in position by the seat belt and the additional protection device. That one sitting on the vehicle seat, which is upwards, can when the movement of the vehicle has come to an end, disengage from the seat belt and move down to that side of the vehicle which is
downwards, without risk for injuries, and thereafter leave the vehicle fast
The additional protection device is intended to be moved between a retracted position and an active position ln the retracted position the arm of the additional protection device shall be in such a position that it will not prevent that one sitting on the vehicle seat to move freely in the vehicle. In the active position the arm of the additional protection device is in height with or just above the shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat and will not prevent that one sitting on the vehicle seat from seeing towards the interior of the vehicle.
Publication US 7,464,962 is showing a protection device for a larger vehicle, such as a lorry, where the protection device prevents that one sitting on the vehicle seat which will be upwards when the vehicle has rotated a quarter of a turn around an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, will free fall to that side of the vehicle which is downwards. The protection device consists of a net, which covers a large section of the vehicle cab.
Publication US 9,333,931 is showing and describing a protection device for an occupant of a vehicle, who is sitting on a front seat in a vehicle, such as a passenger car at an oblique impact, an impact that occur at an angle of 10 - 50 degrees relative to the vehicles normal direction of travel.
Neither of the publications US 7,464,962 nor US 9,333,931 is showing an additional protection device which together with the seat belt of the vehicle prevents that one sitting on that vehicle seat which is upwards, when the vehicle has rolled over, when the vehicle has rotated a quarter of a turn around an axis which is parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, from leaving the vehicle seat. When the vehicle has stopped rotating around an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, that one sitting on the vehicle seat, which is upwards, can open the seat belt buckle and can leave the vehicle without risk for injuries.
An additional protection device according to the invention has a simple and cost effective design, which easily can be positioned on that side of the vehicle seat, which is towards the interior of the vehicle, either as a part when the vehicle is manufactured or as an accessory that is retrofitted.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
With reference to the accompanying drawings follows detailed descriptions of non-limiting embodiments of the invention.
On the drawings are shown by figure 1 a view of a driver location in a larger vehicle, such as a lorry, from the interior of the vehicle, with an additional protection device in active position, figure 2 a view of a driver location in a larger vehicle, such as a lorry, from the front, when the vehicle has begun to rotate around an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, figure 3 a view of a driver location in a larger vehicle, such as a lorry, from the interior of the vehicle, with another version of an additional protection device and figure 4 a view of a driver location in a larger vehicle, such as a lorry, from the interior of the vehicle, with another version of an additional protection device.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERED EMBODIMENTS
Figure 1 is showing a view of a driver location in a larger vehicle, such as a lorry, from the interior of the vehicle, with an additional protection device (10) in active position. The driver position consists of a vehicle seat (11), which has a seat section (12) and a backrest (13) with a head restraint The vehicle seat (11) has a first side (14) in close vicinity to one side of the vehicle, where the side of the vehicle extends along the normal direction of travel of the vehicle. The driver position has a seatbelt (15), which consists of a diagonal section (16) and a hip section (17). The diagonal section (16) and the hip section (17) of the seatbelt (15) are attached to the first side (14) of the vehicle seat (11), which is in close vicinity to one side of the vehicle, where the side of the vehicle extends in the normal direction of travel of the vehicle. Between the diagonal section (16) of the seatbelt (15) and the hip section (17) of the seat belt (15) there is a seatbelt buckle (18), which is attached to the second side (19) of the vehicle seat (11), that side of the vehicle seat (11) which is towards the interior of the vehicle. The seat belt function will not be described in detail as the seat belt does not constitute a part of the invention.
In the embodiment shown in figure 1 the additional protection device (10) is shown in active position and attached to the backrest (13) of the vehicle seat (11) on the second side (19) of the vehicle seat (11), that side which is towards the interior of the vehicle.
The shown additional protection device (10) consists of an arm (20), which extends forward, seen in the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, from the backrest (13) of the vehicle seat (11). In the shown embodiment the arm (20) has a first end section (21), which is in close vicinity to the backrest (13) of the vehicle seat (11), where the arm (20) has a holding assembly (22). The holding assembly (22) is designed so that it can move along a rail (23), which in the shown embodiment is mounted to the backrest (13) of the vehicle seat (11) with an upper attachment device (24) at the top section of the backrest (13) of the vehicle seat (11) and a lower attachment device (25) at the lower section of the backrest (13) of the vehicle seat (11), in close vicinity to the seat section (12) of the vehicle seat (11).
The additional protection device’s (10) holding assembly (22) of the arm (20) and the rail (23), which is mounted on the backrest (13) of the vehicle seat (11), are, in the shown embodiment, so designed that the arm (20) can be moved between an active position in close vicinity to the upper attachment device (24) of the rail (23) and a retracted position in close vicinity to the lower attachment device (25) of the rail (23). The holding assembly (22) of the arm (20) can be moved along the rail (23) but cannot rotate in relation to the rail (23) so the arm (20) has a determined direction, in principal along the normal direction of travel of the vehicle.
The shown additional protection device (10) also consists of a resilient element (26), which is attached along the main part of the arm (20) and which extends from the arm (20) to a lower attachment (27) on the backrest (13) of the vehicle seat (11), the lower attachment (27) is in the vicinity to the seat section (12) of the vehicle seat (11). The lower attachment (27) for the resilient element (26) can be arranged in the vicinity of the lower attachment device (25) for the rail (23) to the backrest (13) of the vehicle seat (11). The resilient element (26) must be of a flexible material so that the resilient element (26) can allow the arm (20) to be moved between an active position and a retracted position. In the shown embodiment the resilient element (26) is in the form of a net. The resilient element (26) must be such that when the shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) is in contact with the resilient element (26), when the vehicle is moving around an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel, the shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) can move under the arm (20). The resilient elements (26) net deforms when the shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) is in contact with the resilient element (26) and prevents the one sitting on that vehicle seat (11), which is upwards when the vehicle is rolling over, when the vehicle is rotating a quarter of a turn around an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, leaving the vehicle seat (11).
The embodiment shown in figure 1 of the additional protection device (10) is intended to be moved manually, between an active position and a retracted position. The arm (20) of the additional protection device (10) shall, in the active position, be at the height of the shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11), preferably so that the shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) will be under the arm (20), when the vehicle moves around an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle. The arm (20) can be locked in the active position with a locking function in the holding assembly (22) of the arm (20). The locking function can be designed so that the arm (20) is released when a control element (28) on the second end section (29) of the arm (20), which is forward, is activated by that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11). To be able to obtain the best protective effect the arm (20) ought to able to be locked in the active position in different positions, so that the arm (20) will be at the height of the shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11), independent of the height of the person sitting on the vehicle seat (11). The locking function of the arm (20) in the active position can consist of a pin, which is working together with a recess in the rail (23), which is holding the arm (20). To avoid that the arm (20] shall cause injury to that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) in a traffic accident the arm (20) ought to be covered with a resilient material.
When the arm (20) in the shown embodiment shall be moved from a retracted position to an active position the arm (20) is moved upwards by that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) until the arm (20) reaches a suitable locking position on the rail (23), which holds the arm (20). When the arm (20) shall be moved from an active position to a retracted position that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) activates a control element (28), which in the shown embodiment is positioned on the second end section (29) of the arm (20), and thereafter moves the arm (20) downwards to a retracted position.
The additional protection device (10) is intended to co-operate with the seat belt (15) arranged on the vehicle seat (11) so that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) does not slide out of the diagonal section (16) of the seat belt (15) in a traffic accident where the vehicle rotates a quarter of a turn around an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, the vehicle rolls over. In a traffic accident where a larger vehicle, such as a lorry, is rolling over the vehicle usually at first decelerates in the normal direction of travel of the vehicle and thereafter the vehicle will roll over, the vehicle will rotate around an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle.
That one sitting on the vehicle seat (11), which is at that side of the vehicle which will be upwards when the vehicle has rotated a quarter of a turn around an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, when the vehicle rolls over, will at the retardation of the vehicle, in the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, be held in position on the vehicle seat (11) by the hip section (17) of the seatbelt (15) and the diagonal section (16) of the set belt (15).
When the vehicle starts to rotate round an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, the vehicle rolls over, that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) which is on that side of the vehicle which will be upwards when the vehicle rolled over, will move towards the interior of the vehicle, and that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) will slide out of the diagonal section (16) of the seat belt (15) and be hanging in the hip section (17) of the seat belt (15). When the vehicle is resting on one side and that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) which is upwards, is hanging in the hip section (17) of the seat belt (15), it is very difficult, near impossible, for that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) which is upwards, to open the seat belt buckle (18). If that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) which is at that side of the vehicle which is upwards when the vehicle has rolled over manages to open the seat belt buckle (18), that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) which is at that side of the vehicle which is upwards when the vehicle has rolled over, will free fall to that side of the vehicle which is
downwards after that the vehicle has rolled over and the risk for injuries are large.
With the additional protection device (10) in active position that one sitting on that vehicle seat (11), which is on that side of the vehicle which will be upwards when the vehicle rotates round an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, the vehicle rolls over, will be caught by the resilient element (26) of the additional protection device (10). The shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11), which is at that side of the vehicle which will be upwards when the vehicle rolls over, will be under the arm (20) of the additional protection device (10) and that one sitting on that vehicle seat (11) which is at that side of the vehicle which will be upwards when the vehicle rolls over will be caught by the resilient element (26) of the additional protection device (10). The resilient element (26) will deform and prevent, together with the seat belt (15), that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11), which is at that side of the vehicle which will be upwards when the vehicle rolls over, is leaving the vehicle seat (11) when the vehicle rolls over. When the rotation of the vehicle has stopped that one sitting on that vehicle seat (11), which is upwards, can leave the vehicle without risk for injuries.
The arm (20) of the additional protection device (10) ought to be covered with a resilient material to prevent injuries to that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11). The resilient material ought to be of such a material that it prevents injuries to that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) if the arm (20) of the additional protection device is in contact with the neck of that one sitting on the vehicle seat
Figure 2 is showing a view of a driver position in a larger vehicle from the front, when the vehicle has started to rotate round an axis which is parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, to roll over. That one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) which is at that side of the vehicle which will be upwards when the vehicle rolls over, has started to move out of the diagonal section (16) of the seat belt (15) and has been caught by the additional protection device (10). The shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11), which is at that side of the vehicle, which will be upwards when the vehicle has rolled over, is under the arm (20) of the additional protection device (10) and has been caught by the resilient element (26). That one sitting on that vehicle seat (11) which is at that side of the vehicle, which will be upwards when the vehicle rolls over, is held towards the seat section (12) of the vehicle seat (11) by the hip section (17) of the seat belt (15). When the movement of the vehicle around an axis, which is along the normal direction of travel of the vehicle has stopped, normally after a rotation of a quarter of a turn, that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) which is at that side of the vehicle which is upwards when the vehicle stopped rotating around an axis which is along the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, will have support for one shoulder against the additional protection device (10) and that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) which is at that side of the vehicle which is upwards can then obtain support with the legs against parts of the vehicle and at the same time grip the steering wheel or the door handle with one hand and can than with the other hand open the seat belt buckle (18), thereafter that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) which is on that side of the vehicle which is upwards when the vehicle has moved around an axis which is along the normal direction of the travel of the vehicle can leave the vehicle seat (11) which is on that side of the vehicle which is upwards when the vehicle has rotated around an axis which is along the normal direction of travel of the vehicle and move to that side of the vehicle which is against the ground without risk for injuries and thereafter leave the vehicle.
Figure 3 is showing an embodiment of an additional protection device (30) where the additional protection device (30) is arranged on that side of the vehicle seat (11), which is towards the interior of the vehicle. The additional protection device (30) is intended to be moved between a retracted position and an active position. Figure 3 shows the additional protection device (30) in an active position. The additional protection device (30) has a mainly horizontal arm (31), which is mounted on a bar (32), which is extending from the arm (31) towards the floor of the vehicle and can be slidably arranged in at least one fastening element (33) on the backrest (13) of the vehicle seat (11). The fastening elements (33) of the bar (32) can be arranged at the seat section (12) of the vehicle seat (11) if such a position of the fastening elements (33) is of a technical advantage.
The additional protection device (30) shown in figure 3, has in common with the additional protection device (10) shown in figure 1, a resilient element (26) which is attached along the main part of the arm (31) and which is extending from the arm (31) to a lower attachment (27) at a lower section of the back rest (13) of the vehicle seat (11) or at the seat section (12) of the vehicle seat (11). The lower attachment (27) of the resilient element (26) can be arranged in connection to one of the fastening elements (33) for the bar (32) at either the backrest (13) of the vehicle seat (11) or at the seat section (12) of the vehicle seat (11).
The embodiment of the additional protection device (30) shown in figure 3 is intended to be moved manually between an active position and a retracted position. The arm (31) of the additional protection device (30) shall in the active position be at the height of the shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11). The arm (31) can be locked in the active position by a locking function in one of the fastenings elements (33) holding the bar (32) of the arm (31) to the vehicle seat (11). The locking function can be designed so that the arm (31) is released, when a control element (28) on the arm (31) is activated, by that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11). To be able to obtain best possible protection the arm (31) ought to be able to be locked in a number of different positions, so that the arm (31) will be at the height of the shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11), independent of the height of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11). The locking function for the arm (31) can consist of a pin which is co- operating with a recess in the bar (32) which is holding the arm (31).
The arm (31) ought to be covered by a resilient material so that the risk of injuries to that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) and using the additional protection device (30) is reduced in a traffic accident The resilient material ought to be of such a material that it prevents injuries to that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) if the arm (20) of the additional protection device (30) is in contact with the neck of that one sitting on the vehicle seat.
The embodiment of the additional protection device (30) shown in figure 3 has an arm (31) with a curved form where the central section (34) of the arm (31) is at a greater distance from the vehicle floor than the two end sections of the arm (31), the first end section (21) of the arm (31), in the vicinity of the backrest (13) of the vehicle seat (11), and the second end section (29) of the arm (31) which is forward, seen in the normal direction of travel of the vehicle. With a curved form the arm (31) is reducing the movement forward, seen in the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) when that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) is in contact with the additional protection device (30). The arm (31) can have a curved form where only the second end section (29) of the arm (31) which is forward, seen in the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, is closer to the floor of the vehicle than the rest of the arm (31).
In the shown embodiment the arm (31) and the bar (32) are one unit where that part which constitutes the arm (31) is covered by a resilient material, which reduces the risk for that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) to be injured in a traffic accident. Figure 4 is showing an additional variant of an additional protection device (35] where the arm (36] of the additional protection device (35] consists of a number of elements, in the shown embodiment three element, a first element (37] which is at the first end section (21] of the arm (36] and mounted to the backrest (13) of the vehicle seat (11), a second element (38) which can be moved into the first element (37) and a third element (39) which can be moved into the second element (38), where the third element (39) constitutes the second end section (29) of the arm (36). The additional protection device (35) has like the earlier described additional protection devices (10, 30) a resilient element (26) arranged to the arm (36) and extending from the arm (36) to a lower attachment (27) arranged at the lower section of the backrest (13) of the vehicle seat (11) or to the seat section (12) of the vehicle seat (11).
With the arm (36) of the additional protection device (35) designed with a first element (37), a second element (38) and a third element (39), where the elements (37, 38, 39) can be moved telescopically into each other and locked in relation to each other, the arm (36) can be moved between a retracted position and an active position. The resilient element (26) can be attached to the arm (36) at the two end sections (21, 29) of the arm (36) and slidably arranged along the central section of the arm (36). In the retracted position the resilient element (26) is along the backrest (13) of the vehicle seat (11).
The arm (36) ought to be covered by a resilient material, so that the risk of injuries to that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) and using the additional protection device (35) is reduced in a traffic accident The resilient material ought to be of such a material that it prevents injuries to that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) if the arm (36) of the additional protection device (35) is in contact with the neck of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11).
An additional protection device (35) with an arm (36) in the form of telescopic elements is a very simple design, which easily can be mounted on a backrest (13) of a vehicle seat (11) as an additional accessory. With the additional protection device (35) in active position that one sitting on that vehicle seat (11) which is on that side of the vehicle which will be upwards when the vehicle rotates round an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, the vehicle rolls over, will be caught by the resilient element (26) of the additional protection device (35). The shoulder of that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11), which is at that side of the vehicle which will be upwards when the vehicle rolls over, will be under the arm (36) of the additional protection device (35) and that one sitting on that vehicle seat (11) which is at that side of the vehicle which will be upwards when the vehicle rolls over will be caught by the resilient element (26) of the additional protection device (35). The resilient element (26) will deform and prevent, together with the seat belt (15), that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11), which is at that side of the vehicle which will be upwards when the vehicle rolls over, leaving the vehicle seat (11) when the vehicle rolls over. When the rotation of the vehicle has stopped that one sitting on that vehicle seat (11), which is upwards, can leave the vehicle without risk for injuries.
The resilient element (26) may have a reinforcement (40) at the edge of the resilient elements (26) which is forward, seen in the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, and the resilient element (26) may have a reinforcement (41) at the edge of the resilient elements (26) which is rearwards, seen in the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, so that the resilient element (26) can take up the forces that occur when that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) is in contact with the resilient element (26) when the vehicle rolls over. In the shown embodiment the resilient element (26) is in the form of a net. To facilitate the use of the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) can have a design such that the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) automatically will move from retracted position to active position, when that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) puts on the seat belt (15). A signal can be transferred from the seat belt buckle (18) to a device holding the arm (20, 31, 36) of the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) in a retracted position, so that the arm (20, 31, 36) of the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) will move to active position.
The additional protection device (10, 30, 35) can be designed so that the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) in normal usage of the vehicle is in a retracted position and that the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) can be connected to a crash sensor which will send a signal to the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) that it shall take up active position when an accident takes place.
With an additional protection device (10, 30, 35) according to the above described embodiments and as the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) is stated in the following patent claims that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) which is upwards when the vehicle rolls over, when the vehicle rotates a quarter of a turn around an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, will not slide out of the diagonal section (16) of the seat belt (15) or be hanging in the hip section (17) of the seat belt (15). That one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) which is upwards when the vehicle has rolled over, will be held in position by the hip section (17) of the seat belt (15), the diagonal section (16) of the seatbelt (15) and the additional protection device (10, 30, 35).
When the rotation of the vehicle around an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, normally after a rotation of a quarter of a turn, that one sitting on that vehicle seat (11) which is at that side of the vehicle, which is upwards when the vehicle stopped rotating round an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, will have support with one shoulder against the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) and that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) which is on that side of the vehicle which is upwards, can obtain support with the legs against parts of the vehicle and simultaneously hold the steering wheel or the door handle with one hand and can then with the other hand open the seat belt buckle (18), thereafter that one sitting on the vehicle seat (11) which is on that side of the vehicle which is upwards, when the vehicle has rotated around an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, can leave the vehicle seat (11) which is on that side of the vehicle which is upwards , when the vehicle has rotated around an axis parallel with the normal direction of travel of the vehicle, and thereafter leave the vehicle so that catastrophic injuries can be avoided if the vehicle has a load of dangerous goods, such as, for example, flammable goods. The same is valid if the vehicle catches fire after the vehicle rolled over.
An additional protection device (10, 30, 35) according to the invention has a simple and cost efficient design, which can easily be mounted on that side of the vehicle seat (11), which is towards the interior of the vehicle, either as a part when the vehicle is manufactured or as an accessory to be fitted afterwards.
Even if the invention has been described with reference to some preferred embodiments, the additional protection device (10, 30, 35) can be modified in a number of ways within the scope of the inventive idea as presented in the stated patent claims.
