Abstract

This invention relates to a tablet containing a systemic insecticide, typically a neonicotinoid, for the long term control of Psyllids, Gall Wasps, Beetles, White Grub, Cutworm, Termites and Bark beetles, in plants, especially in forestry; and a superabsorbent polymer. The tablet is placed in a pit of a plant that is being planted, proximate the root plug of the plant.

Description

INSECTICIDAL TABLET
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
THIS invention relates to a tablet for the control of insects. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention there is provided a tablet containing:
a systemic insecticide for the long term control of Psyllids, Gall Wasps, Beetles, White Grub, Cutworm, Termites and Bark beetles, in plants, especially in forestry; and
a superabsorbent polymer.
The insecticide is preferably a neonicotinoid such as acetamiprid, clothianidin, imidacloprid, nitenpyram, nithiazine, thiacloprid an d thiamethoxam, or fipronil, preferably imidacloprid.
The tablet may contain 60 - 80 g/kg, preferably 65 - 75 g/kg, typically 70 g/kg insecticide.
Preferably the superabsorbent polymer is a K-based superabsorbent polymer, preferably in an amount of 5 to 15 g/kg, preferably 8 to 12 g/kg, typically 10 g/kg.
Preferably, the tablet also contains a fertilizer, preferably urea formaldehyde, preferably in an amount of 100 - 200 g/kg, preferably 130 - 170 g/kg, typically 150 g/kg.
The tablet may also contain a binder, a filler such as bone meal, and zinc. Typically the tablet has a mass of 6 to 10 g, preferably 8 g, a pH of 8 to 9, preferably of 8.5, and a bulk density of 1 to 1 .5, preferably 1 .15 g/ml.
The invention also relates to a method of controlling Psyllids, Gall Wasps, Beetles, White Grub, Cutworm, Termites and Bark beetles in a plant such as a tree, the method including the step of placing the tablet in a pit of a plant that is being planted, proximate the root plug of the plant.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
THIS invention relates to a systemic tablet insecticide for the long term control of Psyllids, Gall Wasps, Beetles, White Grub, Cutworm, Termites and Bark beetles, especially in forestry.
The tablet has a mass of 8 g is flat cylindrical in shape, has a pH of 8.5, a melting point of 143.6eC, a bulk density of 1 .15 g/ml and is partially dispersible in water.
The active ingredient is imidacloprid (CAS No. 138261 -41 -3), which is a systemic insecticide with translaminar activity and with contact and stomach action. It acts as an antagonist by binding to postsynaptic nicotine receptors in the insect central nervous system. Imidacloprid is present in the tablet in an amount of 70 g/kg. In an embodiment of the invention, the tablet comprises the following formulation:
Ingredients g/kg
Bonemeal (Filler) 400
Binder 350
Imidacloprid (Active) 70
Zinc 20
SAP (K-based) (Super absorbent polymer) 10
Urea Formaldehyde 150 The tablet is applied at a dosage rate of one tablet per tree, when planting. The tablet is placed in a pit of a tree that is being planted, proximate the root plug of the tree, in the root zone of the tree. Once the tablet is in the root zone of the tree, moisture in the soil profile (from rain or irrigation) mobilizes the insecticide. The superabsorbent polymer creates a moist zone which is penetrated by the roots and facilitates the uptake of the systemic insecticide through the root system. The superabsorbent polymer allows the ingredients to be exposed to the root system when it comes into contact with moisture, thus making the ingredients available to the plant.
Although this embodiment of the invention is described in relation to trees, the tablet may be used for any other kinds of plants.
Benefits of the invention include:
• Once-off application at planting
• Very low insecticide dosage
• Synergy between insecticide and fertilizer
• Placement at root plug maximizes fertilizer usage
• No chemical or fertilizer leaching
• Accurate and cost-effective application of fertilizer and insecticide
• Safe application, no spillage or insecticide drift
• Labour saving
• Environmentally friendly
• No fertilizing and dosing of weeds
• Systemic application protects the whole plant, leaf/root
• The plant is protected at its weakest
• Reduces blanking.
