Definitions
- the present invention relates to construction of a boss for composite pressure receptacles.
- Composite pressure receptacles are generally used for storing, transporting and distributing fluids and gases under high or low pressures, such as LPG, CNG, industrial gases or air.
- a composite pressure receptacle consists of a composite container containing a composite outer shell bearing all pressure loads and an inner liner ensuring sealing of the container, usually made of polymer or metal, and an inlet/outlet system comprising a boss with a thread to fit a valve or a fitting for filling the receptacle and for subsequently distributing the content of the receptacle.
- the inlet/outlet system has to be integrated into the container and ensure gas tightness of the connection between the inner liner and the boss with a connection port.
- a sealing element typically, a sealing ring
- the tightness is ensured by securing the inner liner of the composite container within the boss construction and sealing it by means of a sealing element (typically, a sealing ring) to prevent the leaking of the content.
- a sealing element typically, a sealing ring
- the external part of the boss is further secured to the receptacle by being at least partially enclosed within the composite outer shell of the composite container to prevent the disengaging of the boss from the composite container.
- bosses for the composite pressure receptacles suffer from the impossibility of disassembling for control of the components and for replacement of the sealing element (e.g., sealing ring). As the sealing element is exposed to longterm loads, it may become damaged, and this damage means that the whole composite pressure receptacle or at least the boss must be replaced.
- the sealing element e.g., sealing ring
- US 2012/085727 proposes a boss design in which the components may be disassembled to replace individual components, including the sealing element. It consists of an external part and an internal part, the inner liner of the container being secured between the external part and the internal part by means of sealing rings. The external part and the internal part are screwed to each other, thus, they must be provided with a thread. The accuracy of the thread which forms a part of the sealing system and thus should not allow leaks requires very precise and therefore costly production.
- the aim of the present invention is to provide a design of a boss for composite pressure receptacles which can be disassembled to replace individual components (e.g. a sealing element), while maintaining a simple, cost-effective construction.
- the present invention provides a boss for a composite pressure receptacle comprising an inner liner and an outer composite shell, said boss comprising
- a circular flange for being located circumferentially between the inner liner and the outer composite shell, said flange having at least a part of its inner surface provided with an engagement means, and said flange being provided with a thread at least in a part of its inner or outer surface, and/or with a groove for housing of a retaining ring,
- a circular plug with a central opening provided with a thread (tapered or parallel) suitable for engaging a valve or a fitting
- the outer surface of the plug comprises a first portion of the surface adjacent to the opening of the boss, a second portion adjacent to the first portion, a third portion adjacent to the second portion, wherein the first portion comprises a circumferential recess, the second portion is provided with an engagement means to engage with the engagement means of the inner surface of the flange, and the third part includes at least one groove for insertion of a sealing element
- annular fixing element i.e. nut or retaining ring, shaped to fit with the recess in the first portion of the outer surface of the plug.
- the engagement means provided in the flange and in the plug may be selected from the group comprising tapering of a part of the inner surface of the flange and compatible tapering of a part of the outer surface of the plug, a spline keys, slots, feathers, flat surfaces or skirt with engrailment.
- the engagment means are provided in order to prevent rotation of the plug during valve or fitting installation.
- the annular fixing element is a nut having a substantially reshaped cross-section and is provided with a thread on its inner surface, while the flange is provided with a corresponding thread on its outer surface.
- the annular fixing element is a nut which is provided with a thread on its outer surface and the flange is provided with a corresponding thread on its inner surface.
- the annular fixing element is a retaining ring fitted into the flange which is provided with a corresponding groove on its inner surface to house a retaining ring.
- the boss assembly can be equipped with a labeling ring.
- the ring may also ensure proper fiber placement around cylinder neck.
- the present invention further provides a composite pressure receptacle comprising an inner liner, an outer composite shell, and the boss according to the invention.
- the inner liner is made of metal, such as steel, or of polymeric material, such as polyethylene or polyethyleneterephtalate.
- the flange of the boss is preferably fixed into the composite shell, e.g., by integrating during winding.
- the flange can be equipped with circumferential grooves and spline keys or flat surfaces.
- the design of the invention allows to remove the annular fixing element, i.e to unscrew the nut or unclip the retaining ring and remove the plug for sealing replacement and periodical inspection of the inner liner. This is not possible in most prior art designs. Furthermore, the present invention does not require any additional measures for preventing plug rotation during valve installation, which is due to the separation of the fixing element from the plug, which is connected to composite material through the flange and through the engagement means. Thus, for valve installation, the receptacle can be held by the body (container).
- the design of the invention further allows for the use of any type of standard valves and threads with no torque limitation.

Description
BOSS FOR A COMPOSITE PRESSURE RECEPTACLE
Field of Art The present invention relates to construction of a boss for composite pressure receptacles. Background Art
Composite pressure receptacles are generally used for storing, transporting and distributing fluids and gases under high or low pressures, such as LPG, CNG, industrial gases or air. Typically, a composite pressure receptacle consists of a composite container containing a composite outer shell bearing all pressure loads and an inner liner ensuring sealing of the container, usually made of polymer or metal, and an inlet/outlet system comprising a boss with a thread to fit a valve or a fitting for filling the receptacle and for subsequently distributing the content of the receptacle.
The inlet/outlet system has to be integrated into the container and ensure gas tightness of the connection between the inner liner and the boss with a connection port. Several types of construction of the boss are known in the prior art. The tightness is ensured by securing the inner liner of the composite container within the boss construction and sealing it by means of a sealing element (typically, a sealing ring) to prevent the leaking of the content. Generally, the external part of the boss is further secured to the receptacle by being at least partially enclosed within the composite outer shell of the composite container to prevent the disengaging of the boss from the composite container.
Most known designs of bosses for the composite pressure receptacles suffer from the impossibility of disassembling for control of the components and for replacement of the sealing element (e.g., sealing ring). As the sealing element is exposed to longterm loads, it may become damaged, and this damage means that the whole composite pressure receptacle or at least the boss must be replaced.
US 2012/085727 proposes a boss design in which the components may be disassembled to replace individual components, including the sealing element. It consists of an external part
and an internal part, the inner liner of the container being secured between the external part and the internal part by means of sealing rings. The external part and the internal part are screwed to each other, thus, they must be provided with a thread. The accuracy of the thread which forms a part of the sealing system and thus should not allow leaks requires very precise and therefore costly production.
The aim of the present invention is to provide a design of a boss for composite pressure receptacles which can be disassembled to replace individual components (e.g. a sealing element), while maintaining a simple, cost-effective construction.

The engagement means provided in the flange and in the plug may be selected from the group comprising tapering of a part of the inner surface of the flange and compatible tapering of a part of the outer surface of the plug, a spline keys, slots, feathers, flat surfaces or skirt with engrailment. The engagment means are provided in order to prevent rotation of the plug during valve or fitting installation.
In one preferred embodiment, the annular fixing element is a nut having a substantially reshaped cross-section and is provided with a thread on its inner surface, while the flange is provided with a corresponding thread on its outer surface.
In another preferred embodiment, the annular fixing element is a nut which is provided with a thread on its outer surface and the flange is provided with a corresponding thread on its inner surface. In another preferred embodiment, the annular fixing element is a retaining ring fitted into the flange which is provided with a corresponding groove on its inner surface to house a retaining ring.
For technological and marking purposes, the boss assembly can be equipped with a labeling ring. The ring may also ensure proper fiber placement around cylinder neck.
The present invention further provides a composite pressure receptacle comprising an inner liner, an outer composite shell, and the boss according to the invention. Preferably, the inner liner is made of metal, such as steel, or of polymeric material, such as polyethylene or polyethyleneterephtalate.
The flange of the boss is preferably fixed into the composite shell, e.g., by integrating during winding. To ensure proper fixation of the flange in the composite shell, the flange can be equipped with circumferential grooves and spline keys or flat surfaces.
The design of the invention allows to remove the annular fixing element, i.e to unscrew the nut or unclip the retaining ring and remove the plug for sealing replacement and periodical inspection of the inner liner. The
design of the invention further allows for the use of any type of standard valves and threads with no torque limitation.
The invention is further illustrated by means of figures and examples, which should not be construed as limiting the claimed scope.
