Description

Seal for toner cartridge
The invention relates to a sealing member for toner cartridge for printers, fax machines, etc., said sealing member comprising a substantially rigid slotted frame and a sealing film, a central portion can be torn off so as to form an opening.
Such sealing members are known and used for the recycling of used toner cartridges, so refill for example the container after the closing of the opening located in front of the magnetic roller.
The known sealing member can be pushed within a gap formed between the toner container and the support element for the magnetic roller, after removal of the remaining part of the old sealing member.
Optionally, the toner cartridge is separated into two parts, such as a container part and the support for the magnetic roller, so as to facilitate the removal of the remaining part of the old sealing member.
When pushing a new sealing member into the gap and gluing it for closing the toner container, or when attaching the support of the magnetic roller onto the closed toner container, it has been observed that some problem could occur when tearing the central portion of the sealing film, such as breaking of the pulling means due to a too high resistance force, despite the use of means for lowering the initial tearing force. While not being bound to any theory, it seems said problem is due to the gluing of the film portion adjacent to the initial end of the central portion of the sealing film to be torn off, onto the substantially rigid slotted frame.
It has now been observed that said problem could be solved by using a sealing member as disclosed in the attached claims. According to the invention, the sealing member for a toner cartridge for printer, fax machine or copier, (said toner cartridge having a face with an opening for the passage of toner) comprises :
- a frame support assembly with a minimum thickness of 0.2 mm (the maximum thickness being however generally lower than 5mm), said frame support assembly having a central longitudinal slot opening being defined between two longitudinal edge elements and two lateral end edge elements of the frame support assembly, whereby said slot opening extends between two longitudinal edge and two end edges, whereby said frame support assembly is selected so as to have a
longitudinal bending resistance such that when placing the frame support assembly on a face of a table extending in a first horizontal plane so that the frame support assembly is divided in a first part and a second part, the first part consisting of one the said lateral end edge elements of the frame support assembly and 50% of the longitudinal edge elements of the said frame support extending from said lateral end edge element towards the said other lateral end edge element of the frame support assembly and being attached to the said horizontal face of the table, while the second part comprising the other later end edge element and the other 50% of the longitudinal edge elements of the said frame support assembly extend over the table so that the second lateral end edge of the slot extends at a level defined by a second horizontal plane distant by less than 2cm, advantageously less than 1cm, preferably less than 0.5cm (for example about 0.1cm to 0.4cm, or lesser) from the first horizontal plane;
- a sealing film comprising two longitudinal edge portions, and a central portion defined between said two longitudinal edge portions and extending from a first end up to a second end, whereby said central portion is adapted to be torn out of the sealing film from the said first end up to the said second end, so as to form an opening between the said two longitudinal edge portions, said sealing film having a first face directed towards the frame support assembly, and a second face opposite to said first face; - a pulling strip connected to the first end of the central portion of the sealing film, whereby the pulling means extends between the frame support assembly and the sealing film before the tearing off of the central portion of the sealing film;
- a removable protection film for a gluing means;
- first gluing means extending along the second face of the sealing film, said first gluing means being adapted for gluing the sealing film onto the face with opening of the toner cartridge, after removal of the removable protection film ;
- second gluing means extending along the first face of the sealing film for attaching the sealing film onto a face of the frame support assembly, whereby said gluing means, optionally with one or two intermediate elements, forms two longitudinal gluing lines for gluing longitudinal edge portions of the sealing film onto the longitudinal edge elements of the frame support assembly, and whereby the said second gluing means optionally with one or more intermediate elements is not gluing the sealing film onto the lateral end edge elements of the frame support assembly, as well as not gluing a part of the longitudinal edge elements of the frame support assembly to an end portion of the sealing film adjacent to its first end and covering partly the central longitudinal slot.
Advantageously, said second gluing means optionally with one or more intermediate elements is not gluing the sealing film onto the lateral end edge elements of the frame support assembly, as well as not gluing a part of the longitudinal edge elements of the frame support assembly to an end portion of the sealing film adjacent to its first end and covering the central longitudinal slot on a length of 2mm to 12mm, advantageously from 3mm to 8mm from the end edge of the slot opening adjacent to the first end of the sealing film.
Preferably, an intermediate element is glued on a part of the longitudinal edge elements of the frame support assembly adjacent to the end edge of the slot opening adjacent to the first end of the sealing film, so as to prevent the gluing of said part of the longitudinal edge elements to the sealing film adjacent to its first end and covering partly the central longitudinal slot. Said intermediate element is for example a film element with a face having low friction properties, said film element being glued along the longitudinal edge elements of the sealing film so as to define a passage between the sealing film and the film element for the pulling means. Said film element has advantageously a portion extending within the slot opening of the frame support assembly, whereby acting as means for reducing or preventing toner leakage at said end of the sealing member after tearing off of the central portion of the sealing film.
According to an advantageous embodiment, the said second gluing means optionally with one or more intermediate elements is also not gluing a part of the longitudinal edge elements of the frame support assembly to an end portion of the sealing film adjacent to its second end and covering partly the central longitudinal slot. Preferably, the said second gluing means optionally with one or more intermediate elements is not gluing a part of the longitudinal edge elements of the frame support assembly to an end portion of the sealing film adjacent to its second end and covering partly the central longitudinal slot on a length of 2mm to 12mm, advantageously from 3mm to 8mm from the end edge of the slot opening adjacent to the second end of the sealing film.
According to a specific embodiment, an intermediate .element is glued on a part of the longitudinal edge elements of the frame support assembly adj cent to the end edge of the slot opening adjacent to the second end of the sealing film, so as to prevent the gluing of said part of the longitudinal edge elements to the sealing film adjacent to its second end and covering partly the central longitudinal slot. Said intermediate element is for example a film element with a face having low friction properties, said film element being glued along the longitudinal edge elements of the sealing film so as to define a passage between the sealing film and the film element for the pulling means. Said film element has advantageously a portion extending within the slot opening of the frame support assembly, whereby acting as means for reducing or preventing toner leakage at said end of the sealing member after the complete tearing off of the central portion of the sealing film.
According to specific embodiments,
- the frame support assembly comprises a slotted frame support made of a non foamed material having a thickness of less than 2mm, said slotted frame support having two opposite longitudinal edge elements, whereby said slotted frame support is attached to a foam element extending along one of said two opposite longitudinal edge elements, said foam element having a thickness of more than 2mm, and/or
- the frame support assembly comprises a substantially rigid frame support comprising two longitudinal edge elements and a first and a second lateral edge elements extending between the said two longitudinal edge elements, whereby between said longitudinal and lateral edge elements a slot opening is defined, whereby the longitudinal edge elements are provided with extension protruding the first and/or the second lateral edge elements, and/or
- the sealing film is provided with a means for lowering the initial tearing force of the central portion of the sealing film at its first end, and/or
- the means for lowering the initial tearing force of the central portion at its first end is two cuts, whereby the said two cuts are covered by the first lateral end edge element of the frame support assembly and do not protrude witiiin the slot opening of the frame support assembly before the tearing off of the central portion of the sealing film, and/or

Figure 1 is an exploded view of a sealing member 1 adapted for sealing a toner cartridge TC for printer, fax machine or copier, said toner cartridge TC having a face F with an opening O for the passage of toner, (see figure 17) The sealing member is adapted for being glued on the face F of the toner cartridge, and for being located between said face F and the support for the magnetic roller SM.
The sealing member of figure 1 comprises :
- a substantially rigid frame support 2 with a thickness comprised between 1 and 2mm, said frame support 2 having a central longitudinal slot opening 2A being defined between two longitudinal edge elements 2B,2C and two lateral end edge elements 2D,2E of the frame support 2, whereby said slot opening 2A extends between two longitudinal edges 2A1,2A2 and two end edges 2A3,2A4, whereby said frame support 2 is sufficiently rigid so as to have a sufficient longitudinal bending resistance, for measuring said bending resistance, the frame support 2 is attached to a horizontal face FT of a table T extending in a first horizontal plane so that the frame support 2 is divided in a first part 20 and a second part 21, the first part consisting of one lateral end edge element 2D of the frame support 2 and 50% of the longitudinal edge elements 2B,2C of the said frame support 2 extending from said lateral end edge element 2D towards the said other lateral end edge element 2E of the frame support 2. Said part 20 of the frame support 2 is glued on the table F for example by means of the glue layer of the sealing film intended to be used for gluing the sealing film onto the face F of the toner container. The other part 21 of the frame support overhangs and protrudes the table. The bending resistance is measured by determining the distance between the plane HI of the table T and the level LI of the lateral edge of the slot of the part 21 of the substantially rigid support 2, said level LI being the level of the bottom face of the support 2. Said bending resistance is less than 0.5cm, preferably less than 3mm. The frame support is for example made of plastic material, such as Polystyrene, Polypropylene. While having a sufficient rigidity, so as to remain flat or substantially flat in the absence of bending force, the support has some flexibility when exerting bending force on the support.
- a sealing film 3 comprising two longitudinal edge portions 3 A,3B, and a central portion 3C defined between said two longitudinal edge portions 3A,3B and extending from a first end 3C1 up to a second end 3C2, whereby said central portion is adapted to be torn out of the sealing film from the said first end 3C1 up to the said second end 3C2, so as to form an opening between the said two longitudinal edge portions 3A,3B, said sealing film 3 having a first face 3F1 directed towards the frame support assembly, and a second face 3F2 opposite to said first face 3F1;
- a pulling strip 4 connected to the first end 3C1 of the central portion 3C of the sealing film 3, whereby the pulling means 4 is bent so as to extend between the frame support 2 and the sealing film 3 before the tearing off of the central portion of the sealing film;
- a removable protection film 5 for first gluing means 6;
- first gluing means 6 extending along the second face 3F2 of the sealing film, said first gluing means being adapted, for gluing the sealing film 3 onto the face F with opening of the toner cartridge TC, after removal of the removable protection film 5. Said first gluing means is for example a glue band extending all along the edge of said face 3F2.
- second gluing means 7 extending along the first face 3F1 of the sealing film 3 for attaching the sealing film onto a face of the frame support assembly. Said second gluing means is two gluing bands 7A,7B, a first 7A being applied on the longitudinal edge portion 3 A of the sealing film 3, while the other extend on the other longitudinal edge portion 3B of the sealing film 3.
Said gluing bands 7A,7B do not extend on all the length of the longitudinal edge portions 3 A,3B of the sealing film, so that the first and second edge element 2D,2E, as well as portions of the longitudinal edge elements 2B,2C of the frame support 2 are not glued onto the sealing film 3. The sealing film 3 is thus only bound to the frame support 2 by the glue band 7A,7B.
The length LI of the glue bands 7A,7B is smaller than the length L2 of the central opening 2 A of the substantially rigid support 2, whereby the end portions 2X,2Y of the frame support 2 including portions of the longitudinal elements is not glued to the sealing film, said not glued end portions 2X,2Y comprising a portion of the longitudinal elements 2B,2C extending along the opening 2A on a length comprised between 3mm and 5mm. The end portions of the film 3 can thus be bent with respect to the substantially rigid frame support 2.
The end 3C1 of the central portion 3 C to be torn off is defined between two cuts 8 acting as means for lowering the initial tearing force. It has been observed that the tearing of the central portion 3C was more easy than of the tearing of the central portion of the film having its two longitudinal elements glued along all their length on the frame support.
The embodiment of figure 7 is similar to that of figure 1, except that the sealing film is provided with gluing bands 7A,7B extending along the whole length of the longitudinal edge portions 3A,3B, and that two intermediate strips 11,12 are attached to the end portions of the sealing film 3, so the end portions 2X,2Y of the frame support 2 are not glued to the sealing film 3.
A small portion of the strip 11,12 extends within the slot 2A.
The pulling means 4, before being torn of, has a portion extending between the film 3 and the strip 11 (end 3C1), and another portion extending between the film 3 and the strip 12 (end 3C2). The strips 11,12 act as means for preventing leaks after the tearing of the central portion 3 C of the film 3, means for facilitating the tearing operation, and as means for cleaning the central portion 3C of the film during its tearing.
The strips are advantageously made of a material with a low friction coefficient. The embodiment of figure 9 is similar to that of figure 1, except that the corner 200 of the frame support 2 are rounded or cut. This is advantageous for placing the end portions within a gap existing between the toner container and the support for the magnetic roller.
The embodiment of figure 12 is similar to that of figure 1, except that the glue bands 3A,3B extend to the edge adjacent to the end 3C2 of the sealing film 3, whereby the longitudinal elements 2B,2C of the frame support 2 are glued to the sealing film up to said edge adjacent to the end 3C2 of the central portion. The slotted frame support 2 is further provided with one or more protruding legs 200, which can help to the correct placement of the sealing member, for example in case the sealing member is inserted with the protective film 5 through a gap in between the face with opening of the toner container and the support with the magnetic roller. After inserting the sealing member with the protective film 5 at the correct place, the protective film 5 is the removed so as to glue the sealing film on the face with opening of the toner container and to seal said opening. The protective film 5 has then a higher length, for example a length greater than twice the length of the slotted support 2, so as to bend the protective film so that a portion thereof is bent over the portion of the protective film covering the sealing film and so that the free end of the protective film extends outside the gap, whereby enabling to tear off the protective film 5 .
The legs 200 can be broken off and/or bent after placement and attachment of the sealing film 3 onto the toner container. The leg(s), for example after bending, can also be used as wedge for closing the gap G and ensuring some extra pressure on one end of the support plate 2.
The embodiment of figure 13 is similar to that of figure 12, except that a strip 12 (as explained for the embodiment in figure 8) is present. The embodiment of figure 14 is similar to that of figure 1, except that the support comprises a slotted support plate 2 and a foam element 13 extending along an edge of the support plate 2. Said foam element has for example a thickness of 3mm and is suitable for increasing the natural bending resistance of the support plate ( the support assembly being the combination of the plate 2 with the foam support.
The embodiment of figure 16 is similar to that of figure 1, except that the frame support 2 is provided with a thin foam slotted element 14, said foam element being glued along all its edges to the edges of support plate 2 (glue bands 15).
The sealing film is then glued to said thin foam layer 15 along the longitudinal edges. Such foam layer is advantageous for preventing leaks and for ensuring a cleaning of the central portion 3C during its tearing.
For recycling an used toner cartridge comprising a toner container TC to which a support for magnetic roller SM is attached, we can operate as follows :
The toner cartridge is dismantled in a toner container TC and in a support SM for the magnetic roller.
The face F of the toner container is cleaned so as to remove remaining parts of an old sealing member.
The container is also cleaned so as to remove the remaining toner present in the container.
A sealing member of the invention is attached to said face F of the toner container TC, after removal of the protection film or when removing the protection film. The opening O of the toner container is now closed, whereby the toner container is filled with new toner after removal of the cap C. When the toner container is filled, the side opening is closed back by means of the cap C. The support SM is placed back onto the toner container, whereby the support 2 of the sealing member 1 is entrapped between the face F of the toner container and the face Fl of the support SM.
The edge of the support SM is for example pushed into a groove of the toner container, while the opposite edge of the support is attached to the toner container by means of clips 25.
A gap G is so defined on a lateral face of the toner cartridge between the face F of the toner container TC and the side plate of the support SM. A plug or wedge W is then used for closing said gap, whereby exerting a pressure on the upper face of the support 2 towards the face F, so as to prevent any movement of the support 2, when tearing the central portion 3C of the sealing film 3.
It is obvious that other methods can be used for recycling used toner cartridges, for example methods not requiring the complete dismantling of the toner cartridge.
