Description

CANNE  CANE
The present invention relates to an apparatus for aiding walking, including a cane.
A walking aid apparatus such as a rod comprises a body of rectilinear or substantially rectilinear shape, one end of which, the upper end, comprises a means of grip and support, while the other end, lower end, is provided with a tip having a non-slip function.
A cane has two main drawbacks, on the one hand that of having to bend down to the ground to pick it when it has fallen, and secondly to have to find a vertical surface to ask in support if we do not want it to fall to the ground.
Canes are already known whose tip of the lower end is provided with an enlargement in the form of a disc coaxial with the cane, intended to constitute a lever allowing, when the cane is on the ground and that is exerted on said disk a substantially vertical pressure, to cause the raising of the cane.
Such a rod has however a drawback, that of requiring a large effort, or controlled throughout the operation, to raise the cane, so that the recovery of the cane is sudden and fast, and that the user can not not being able to catch it when it is recovering, especially since people who generally need a cane present motor difficulties.
Self-straightening rods are also known which are equipped with means enabling them to always remain vertical, this being the case with the rod described in document EP 0 661 010. The lower end of this rod is equipped with an element having inferiorly and peripherally a convex surface defining a point of rotation, whereas due to a ballast, the center of gravity of the rod is located below said point of rotation. If such a cane is indeed self-healing, and still remains vertical, it appears however, due to the congestion of its lower end, a use impractical in its basic function, namely the assistance to walking.
Also known rods to ensure a certain stability in use, and maintaining vertical position without support. These rods, described for example in the documents US 5,992,434, FR 2,668,690, DE 203 09 568 and WO 99/35930, all comprise at their end a tip provided with a flat bearing face, which extends in a plane perpendicular to the main axis of the cane.
If the rods described in these documents have features that allow them to ensure on the one hand a certain stability in use, and secondly a vertical position without support, however, they have a disadvantage. Indeed their flat sole requires, after an attempt at recovery at the foot of the cane, or when positioning the latter to vertical to maintain it without support, to operate with very precise gestures so that said flat sole is perfectly in contact with the ground, and to avoid oscillation movements likely to cause it to tilt.
The present invention aims to provide a cane to overcome the various aforementioned drawbacks.
The rod according to the invention comprises a shaft of rectilinear or substantially straight shape, an upper end comprising a handle for gripping and support, and a lower end provided with a tip having a non-slip function, and which has a widening under form of a coaxial disc to the rod, intended to constitute a lever adapted to allow the raising during the application of pressure, and it is characterized in that said shaft and said handle are made of a light material, and in that said tip contains a ballast, so as to bring the center of gravity of said rod to the nearest of said lower end. while said tip has an end wall of convex shape.
The positioning of the center of gravity near the lower end, combined with the disc shape of the tip, allows the lifting of the cane by exerting a bearing on the edge of said tip, without this requiring significant effort, nor special control of this effort.
The center of gravity is not low enough to allow automatic lifting of the cane when it is placed on the ground, but it is low enough to assist the lifting of the cane, ensure this lift from a certain angle of tilt with the horizontal, and ensure its stability when positioned vertically.
The convex shape of the end of the tip helps cushion the bearing, offering a multitude of stable positions, unlike a flat sole that offers only one that can sometimes be difficult to find.
According to an additional characteristic of the rod according to the invention, the end wall of the tip is in the form of a spherical cap.
According to another additional feature of the rod according to the invention, the tip has a peripheral wall of frustoconical shape, narrowing towards the end.
According to another additional feature of the rod according to the invention, the upper edge of the peripheral wall is connected to the barrel through a trumpet-shaped intermediate portion.
From the point of view of manufacture, the barrel and the handle are made of a composite material, namely a plastic material preferably loaded with fibers, for example polycarbonate loaded with glass fibers.
The tip consists of cast iron, forming the ballast, covered with an elastomer, but in a preferred version, and advantageously, the ballast consists of batteries, used to operate an on-board electronics such as location equipment, and / or counting. The advantages and characteristics of the rod according to the invention will emerge more clearly from the description which follows and which refers to the appended drawing, which represents a non-limiting embodiment thereof.
Dans le dessin annexé :  In the attached drawing:
- Figure 1 shows a schematic elevational view of a rod according to the invention.
- Figure 2 shows a schematic view in median longitudinal section of a portion of the same cane.
- Figures 3a, 3b, 3c and 3d show schematic elevational views of a portion of the same cane in different phases of use.
With reference to FIG. 1, it is possible to see a rod 1 according to the invention, which essentially comprises a rectilinear or substantially rectilinear shaft 10, an upper end 11 consisting of a grip-shaped handle, and at its lower end 12 a mouthpiece 2.
The tip 2 is in the form of a disc coaxial with the barrel 10, and a diameter much greater than that of the barrel 10, so as to create a peripheral expansion that can serve as a lever.
With reference to FIG. 2, the lower end 12 of the cane 1 and the end piece 2 can be seen in more detail.
The tip 2 has a slightly convex end wall 20, in the form of a spherical cap with a large radius of curvature, and a peripheral wall 21 of frustoconical shape, narrowing towards the end, that is to say that the edge upper 23 of the wall 21 consists of a circle with a diameter greater than that constituted by the lower edge 24 of this wall.
Furthermore, the junction between the upper edge 23 of the wall 21, and the shaft 10, is formed through an intermediate portion 25 trumpet-shaped.
The tip 2 essentially consists of a ballast 3 covered with a layer 22 of an elastomeric material, which forms in particular the walls 20 and 21. The ballast 3 is intended to lower the center of gravity of the rod 1 closer to the lower end 12. It may consist of a metal mass such as cast iron, or, preferably in batteries intended to feed a embedded electronics.
Indeed it is possible to provide in a cane locating means, means for transmitting an alarm signal, or various measuring means, a pedometer for example.
Referring now to Figures 3a, 3b, 3c and 3d, we can see the usefulness of the characteristics of the rod 1 according to the invention.
In these figures we can see the lower end 12 of the rod 1, in three successive phases of its recovery when exerting a pressure P, with the foot for example, on the tip 2, using the one as a lever.
In these figures, there is shown the center of gravity G of the rod 1, located at the barrel 10 near the lower end 12. The position of the center of gravity G obviously depends on the length of the barrel 10, the nature of the material of which are made the shaft 10 and the handle 11, as well as dimensions and the nature of the ballast 3, not visible.
In FIG. 3a, the rod 1 rests on the ground S, between its upper end 11, which is not visible, and the end piece 2, or more exactly at a point on the edge formed by the edge 23.
In FIG. 3b, it can be seen that by exerting a pressure P on the top of the endpiece 2, at the edge 23 in a zone diametrically opposed to that in contact with the ground S, a leverage, raising the shaft 10.
The straightening is obtained by the pivoting of the tip 2 along the edge 23, until, at first, the tip 2 rests on the ground S by its peripheral wall 21.
In FIG. 3c, it can be seen that by prolonging the pressure P, it provokes the continuation of the straightening of the drum 10, by pivoting along the edge formed by the edge 24, until that the wall 20 is in contact with the ground S, as can be seen in FIG. 3d.
The positioning of the center of gravity G near the tip 2 allows easy manipulation of the rod 1, the pressure to be exerted is minimal, it decreases the cantilever and promotes the control of recovery.
Note that the trumpet shape of the intermediate portion 25, has a certain comfort of use, to apply the pressure P with the foot.
Furthermore, the rod 1 can remain in a vertical position without the need to take any support against any surface, because of the positioning of the center of gravity G, and the large radius of curvature of the wall 20.
The convex shape of the wall 20 allows the rod 1 to stabilize in its equilibrium position, which does not necessarily correspond to the verticality of the barrel 10.
Thus, with a little drive the user may be able to straighten a cane 1 according to the invention fallen to the ground, to bring it into a vertical position, and maintain it in this position, without it being necessary that he uses his hands.
