Description
The present invention relates to a virtual golf simulation apparatus and method, and, more particularly, to a virtual golf simulation apparatus and method wherein a virtual golf course is imaged and simulated, and the trajectory of a golf ball hit by a user, i.e. a golfer, is simulated in the virtual golf course.
With the recent upsurge of the golfing population, a so-called screen golf system has gained popularity, which allows a golfer to practice golf and to enjoy a virtual golf game using a virtual golf simulation apparatus.
The screen golf system senses the velocity and direction of a golf ball that a golfer hits onto a screen installed indoors for displaying a virtual golf range, and displays the trajectory of the golf ball on the screen.
The screen golf system implemented using the virtual golf simulation apparatus characteristically offers the same sense of reality that a golfer would feel in a real golf course, when the golfer hits a golf ball in the same manner as in a golf practice range.
It is necessary for the virtual golf simulation apparatus to provide various contents based on various kinds of advanced apparatuses and systems, which cannot be provided by a real golf course or a golf practice range, thereby inducing interest of golfers in addition to provision of the same sense of reality that a golfer would feel playing a round of golf in a real golf course.
Therefore, it is an object of the present invention to provide an apparatus and method for virtual golf simulation imaging sub display and replay display that is capable of achieving more active user-oriented, i.e. golfer-oriented, virtual golf simulation so that a user can confirm information on the state of a specific area of a corresponding hole (for example, information on the state of a green at the position of a tee box) during the progress of virtual golf through virtual golf simulation and watch a more concrete image related to the moving state of a golf ball on a green (or an image having a different view angle than a main simulation image) or a more dramatic image, thereby improving user convenience and inducing interest in virtual golf.
In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, the above and other objects can be accomplished by the provision of an apparatus for virtual golf simulation in a golf course including a sensing device for sensing a hit golf ball, a simulation means for calculating the trajectory of the golf ball according to the sensing result of the sensing device so that the golf ball is simulated in a virtual golf course as a main simulation image according to the calculated trajectory of the golf ball, and a sub display means for selectively displaying a sub display image, in which the moving state of the golf ball simulated in the virtual golf course is constituted and displayed to be zoomed in for a closer look , in a predetermined region of the main simulation image for a predetermined period of time.
In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, there is provided an apparatus for virtual golf simulation in a golf course including a sensing device for sensing a hit golf ball, a simulation means for calculating the trajectory of the golf ball according to the sensing result of the sensing device so that the golf ball is simulated in a virtual golf course as a main simulation image according to the calculated trajectory of the golf ball, and a sub display means for selectively displaying a sub display image showing a preview image in which a state of a specific area comprising a target point set according to user designation or a predetermined target point in the virtual golf course is displayed to be zoomed in for a closer look in a round of golf currently played, in a predetermined region of the main simulation image for a predetermined period of time.

Consequently, the present invention has the effect of improving user convenience and inducing interest in virtual golf.
The above and other objects, features and other advantages of the present invention will be more clearly understood from the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a view illustrating a screen golf system to which a virtual golf simulation apparatus according to an embodiment of the present invention is applied;
FIG. 2 is a block diagram illustrating a control system of a virtual golf simulation apparatus according to an embodiment of the present invention;
FIGS. 3 and 4 are views illustrating a screen on which an example of a sub display image provided by the virtual golf simulation apparatus according to the present invention is executed;
FIGS. 5 and 6 are views illustrating a screen on which another example of the sub display image provided by the virtual golf simulation apparatus according to the present invention is executed;

FIG. 9 is a flow chart related to the provision of a sub display image provided by the virtual golf simulation apparatus according to the present invention.
Now, exemplary embodiments of a virtual golf simulation apparatus according to the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.
The virtual golf simulation apparatus according to the present invention may be embodied in various forms. Typically, the virtual golf simulation apparatus according to the present invention may be applied to a so-called screen golf system.
FIGS. 1 and 2 illustrate an example in which a virtual golf simulation apparatus according to the present invention is applied to a screen golf system, to which, however, the present invention is not limited. For example, the present invention may be applied to all kinds of systems and/or apparatuses that are capable of simulating and imaging a virtual golf course and simulating a virtual golf ball image.
Hereinafter, an example in which a virtual golf simulation apparatus and method according to the present invention are applied to a screen golf system will be described with reference to FIGS. 1 to 2.
As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, a virtual golf simulation apparatus according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a sensing device S for sensing a golf swing performed by a golfer and/or the behavior of a golf ball B hit by the golfer, an image output unit 40 for outputting a predetermined image to a screen 30 disposed in front of the image output unit 40, and a simulation means, i.e. a simulator 20, for storing and processing all data necessary for virtual golf simulation.
Also, the virtual golf simulation apparatus according to this embodiment of the present invention further includes a manipulation unit for allowing a golfer to manipulate a system setting or various kinds of settings necessary to perform a virtual golf game.
FIG. 1 illustrates a keyboard and mouse set 50 as an example of the manipulation unit. A touch screen 70 mounted at a side wall W of a booth may be provided as an example of the manipulation unit.
Meanwhile, although not shown, a remote control (not shown) may be provided as the manipulation unit so that the remote control can directly communicate with the simulator or the touch screen to manipulate virtual golf simulation.
It may be inconvenient for a golfer standing on a swing plate 10 to manipulate the keyboard and mouse set 50 or the touch screen 70 shown in FIG. 1. For this reason, it may be possible to provide a key manipulation unit (not shown) disposed at the swing plate 10 for allowing a golfer who is ready to swing on the swing plate 10 to conveniently manipulate settings for virtual golf simulation as an example of the manipulation unit.
Also, a camera 60 may be mounted to the side wall W of the booth to capture swings of a golfer, as shown in FIG. 1.
Meanwhile, the simulator 20 may include an image processing unit C, a storage unit T and a controller M.
The storage unit T stores all data necessary for virtual golf simulation including data on a virtual golf course. The image processing unit C is provided to process all images related to virtual golf simulation, such as images related to a virtual golf course, images related to movement of a golf ball, and images for menu selection, as data stored in the storage unit T.
The controller M is provided to perform various calculations for virtual golf simulation and to control components of the virtual golf simulation apparatus.
That is, when a golfer hits a golf ball on the swing plate 10 to the screen 30, the sensing device S senses the shot of the golf ball, and transmits the sensing result to the controller M. The controller M transmits the sensing result to the image processing unit C. The image processing unit C extracts golf simulation image information, such as a movement image of the golf ball, from the storage unit T in consideration of movement properties of the golf ball. The golf simulation image information is projected on the screen 30 through the image output unit 40 so that a golf game through virtual simulation is performed.
Although not clearly shown in FIG. 1, the sensing device S (see FIG. 2) may be embodied by an infrared light transmitting and receiving sensor mounted at the swing plate 10 or a camera sensor mounted at the ceiling or the wall. In addition, the sensing device S may be embodied by other different sensors.
Hereinafter, contents provided by the virtual golf simulation apparatus according to the present invention will be described in detail with reference to FIGS. 3 to 8.
First, FIG. 3 is a view illustrating an example in which an image output from the virtual golf simulation apparatus according to this embodiment of the present invention as described above is displayed on the screen 30.
As shown in FIG. 3, the virtual golf simulation apparatus according to this embodiment of the present invention is configured to provide a simulation image of a virtual golf course embodied by the simulation means, i.e. the simulator, and a mini map 32. The mini map 32 has a downscaled image of the virtual golf course displayed in a predetermined region of the simulation image.
On the mini map 32 are displayed a downscaled image of all or some of a hole at which a virtual golf game is being currently played and information on the state of the hole so that the downscaled image and the state information can be recognized at a glance.
The virtual golf simulation apparatus according to this embodiment of the present invention is characterized in that the virtual golf simulation apparatus includes a sub display means for selectively displaying a sub display image, which shows an image related to the state of a specific area of a corresponding golf course, in a predetermined region of a main simulation image, which is separated from the mini map, embodied by the simulation means.
An example in which the sub display image is embodied is shown in FIG. 4.
That is, when a golfer wishes to confirm the state of a green G far away from the golfer before the golfer hits a golf ball 31 located in a field F as shown in FIG. 3, the golfer may obtain a sub display image 100 as shown in FIG. 4 through manipulation using the manipulation unit to confirm the state of the green G.
At this time, the green image embodied in the sub display image 100 may include high and low information of a topography as shown in FIG. 4. In addition, the green image may be embodied to recognize the position of a hole cup.
Also, although not shown, it is possible for the golfer to change the image showing the state of the green embodied in the sub display image 100 through manipulation using the manipulation unit so that the image can be seen at different view angles.
In addition, it is possible to automatically change and display various images showing the states of the green based on various view angles according to predetermined conditions instead of golfer manipulation.
The sub display image 100 may be removed from the screen through additional manipulation performed by the user. Also, the sub display image 100 may be displayed on the screen for a predetermined period of time.
In this way, the information on the state of the green is confirmed in advance through the sub display image. Consequently, it is possible for a golfer to acquire various kinds of information, based on which the golfer may confirm a direction in which the golfer hits a golf ball, and therefore, it is possible for the golfer to effectively enjoy a round of virtual golf.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the sub display image related to the state of the green is provided, to which, however, the present invention is not limited. It is possible to confirm the state of a specific area of a corresponding hole through a sub display.
For example, when the golfer is anxious to know the state of a field adjacent to a target point before the golfer hits a golf ball, a corresponding area may be selected, and the concrete state of the selected area may be displayed through the sub display image in a scaled-up state so that the golfer can confirm the state of the corresponding area.
That is, the sub display image shows a preview image in which a state of a specific area of the virtual golf course is displayed to be zoomed in for a closer look. The sub display image showing the preview image is displayed in a round of golf currently played in a predetermined region of the main simulation image for a predetermined period of time.
Hereinafter, a sub display image provided by a virtual golf simulation apparatus according to another embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to FIGS. 5 and 6.
The virtual golf simulation apparatus according to this embodiment of the present invention is characterized in that the virtual golf simulation apparatus includes a sub display means for displaying a sub display image constituting a scaled-up image showing the moving state of a golf ball in a predetermined region (an area separated from the mini map) of an main simulation image embodied by the simulation means, i.e. the simulator, for a predetermined period of time when user manipulation is performed or the simulation result satisfies predetermined conditions during the progress of virtual golf simulation.
That is, the sub display image shows a moving state of the golf ball constituted to be zoomed in for a closer look. The sub display image showing the moving state of the golf ball is displayed in a round of golf currently played.
That is, in a case in which a golfer hits an approach shot of a golf ball 31 to the green G, as shown in FIG. 5, a sub display 100 appears to display information on the moving state of a golf ball 102 in a green 101, i.e. a direction in which the golf ball 102 is moved toward a hole cup 103, in more detail when the golf ball 31 enters the green as shown in FIG. 6.
At this time, the sub display 100 may be manually activated and shown through golfer manipulation. However, it is preferable for the sub display 100 to automatically appear when the golf ball 31 enters the green G. Of course, it is preferable for a golfer to change settings related to automatic appearance of the sub display.
Also, the sub display 100 may not appear whenever the golf ball 31 enters the green G but the sub display 100 may appear when the golf ball 31 gets into an area corresponding to a predetermined radius about a hole cup H.
The sub display 100 may display an image in which the golf ball 102 approaches the hole cup 103 at a specific view angle. Also, various sub display images based on various view angles may be changed at predetermined time intervals through golfer manipulation or according to progress conditions of the golf ball 102 and displayed on the sub display 100.
In this way, during playing of a short game in the vicinity of the green, the progress conditions of the game is more concretely and more variously displayed through the sub display, and therefore, it is possible for a golfer to enjoy a round of virtual golf more vividly with extraordinary interest.
Hereinafter, a replay image provided by a virtual golf simulation apparatus according to another embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to FIGS. 7 and 8.
The virtual golf simulation apparatus according to this embodiment of the present invention is characterized in that the virtual golf simulation apparatus includes a replay display means for displaying a replay image obtained by reconstituting a replay image related to the same shot of the golf ball as an image based on a different view angle or a more dramatic image after a simulation image is output when simulation is performed according to the sensing result of the golf ball hit by a user and user manipulation is performed or the simulation result satisfies predetermined conditions during the progress of virtual golf simulation.
When a simulation image obtained as the result of a user’s approach shot of the golf ball to the green G is output from the main simulation image as shown in FIG. 5, and output of a replay image related to the approach shot is requested (when user manipulation is performed or the user’s approach shot satisfies predetermined conditions), a replay image 200 is displayed on the screen as shown in FIGS. 7 and 8 so that the user may feel the approach shot more dramatically.
That is, as if a replay image of an excellent shot is reconstituted and shown very dramatically when a real golf game is broadcast on TV, the virtual golf simulation apparatus according to this embodiment of the present invention displays a replay image based on the result of a user’s shot.
Here, the predetermined conditions necessary for outputting the replay image may be satisfied, for example, when a user records the flight distance more than a predetermined level during a round of virtual golf. In addition, when other conditions are also satisfied in addition to the condition of the flight distance, the replay image may be output.
The above conditions may be decided, for example, in consideration of the kind of a golf club used, whether a virtual golf ball has been on a fairway, and the number of shots in a state in which the flight distance of a golf ball exceeds the predetermined level. In addition, information on a skill rank of a logged-in golfer may be loaded from a system storage unit, and the conditions may be decided according to the skill rank based on the loaded information. Also, the conditions may be decided according to whether a mode of the virtual golf game which is being currently played is a professional mode, an amateur mode, or a beginner mode.
Hereinafter, an execution flow of a sub display image and a replay image provided by the virtual golf simulation apparatus according to the present invention will be described in detail with reference to a flow chart shown in FIG. 9.
First, a virtual golf simulation image is output (S10), and a virtual golf game is performed (S20).
At this time, a user may hit a golf ball to perform the virtual golf game or confirm the state of a golf course carefully before hitting a shot of the golf ball. The controller determines whether the user has hit the golf ball (S30) or execution of a preview on the state of the golf course has been requested by the user (S40).
Upon determining that the execution of the preview has been requested by the user, a preview image on the state of a specific area of the golf course is simulated and a sub display image is displayed on the screen (S41).
When the user hits the golf ball, the sensing device senses the movement of the golf ball hit by the user (S31), and the trajectory of the golf ball in the virtual golf course is calculated based on the sensing result (S32).
Subsequently, simulation based on the calculated trajectory of the golf ball in the virtual golf course is executed and a virtual golf simulation image is output (S33).
At this time, when user manipulation is performed to output a sub display image showing a zoomed-in image related to the movement of the golf ball or the result of the simulation based on the calculated trajectory of the golf ball satisfies the predetermined conditions, a sub display image is displayed (S50).
That is, a sub display image obtained by simulating the movement of the golf ball as a zoomed-in image is displayed in a predetermined region of the main simulation image (S51).
Meanwhile, when it is determined that the shot is very excellent or satisfies a predetermined condition as the result of the simulation based on the calculated trajectory of the golf ball in the virtual golf course or when additional user manipulation is performed, the simulation result may be reconstituted and displayed as a replay image (S60).
That is, a replay image obtained by simulating the result simulated on the main simulation image as a replay image after the main simulation image is output is displayed (S61).
Various embodiments of an apparatus and method for the virtual golf simulation imaging sub display and replay display have been described in the best mode for carrying out the invention.
In the apparatus and method for the virtual golf simulation imaging the sub display and the replay display according to the present invention as described above, it is possible to achieve more active user-oriented, i.e. golfer-oriented, virtual golf simulation so that a user can confirm information on the state of a specific area of a corresponding hole (for example, information on the state of a green at the position of a tee box) during the progress of virtual golf through virtual golf simulation and watch a more concrete image related to the moving state of a golf ball on a green (or an image having a different view angle than a main simulation image) or a more dramatic image, thereby improving user convenience and inducing interest in virtual golf. Consequently, the present invention can be widely used in industries related to the apparatus and method for the virtual golf simulation imaging the sub display and the replay display.
