Abstract

Apparatus is described comprising a first ceramic material, a second ceramic material and a metallic surface, in which the first ceramic material is joined to or sealed with the second ceramic material, and a surface of the first ceramic material is joined to or sealed with the metallic surface. The apparatus may be used in a selectively permeable membrane. Also described is an alloy composition comprising Ag and Cu, in which the alloy additionally comprises an element X, where X is Al and/or Pd, and its use as a seal for joining or sealing a metallic surface to a ceramic surface. An alloy composition is also described comprising Ag, Pd, Ti and X where X is one or more of Cu, Al and Mn, and its use as a seal for joining or sealing a metallic surface to a ceramic surface. In examples, an oxide composition is described comprising, in addition to oxygen, Al, Ca and Si, and further comprising one or more of Ba, Zr, Ti, B, Li and Ga. The oxide composition can be used in the joining or sealing of two ceramic materials.
