Description

CLIP FOR USE IN ENCASING A DUVET OR QUILT This invention relates to a clip for use in encasing a duvet or quilt within an outer cover, the use of same, and a method of encasing a duvet or quilt within an outer cover. It is well known to provide external covers for use with articles such as duvets or quilts. The covers are typically in the form of a pouch having an aperture which the duvet or quilt is passed through. Typically, this aperture is formed along all or part of a transverse edge of the cover. Users often find it quite difficult to position these covers over duvets and quilts. The task is often slow and inconvenient for an able bodied person, and clearly the situation is even worse for elderly or physically impaired users.
The present invention, in at least some of its embodiments, addresses the above-described problem.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a clip for use in encasing a duvet or quilt within an outer cover, wherein the clip is formed from a plastics material and includes: a hinge portion; a pair of flexible elongate arms extending from the hinge portion; and a closure portion disposed on the ends of the arms distal from the hinge portion; in which the arms are greater than 10 cm in length so that the clip can be positioned across a corner of the cover having the duvet or quilt disposed therein and the closure portion can be closed to hold the duvet or quilt in place within the cover; and the arms are able to flex to accommodate the duvet or quilt and cover between said arms.
Advantageously, the width and/or the thickness of the arms reduces towards the middle of the arms. This configuration can confer the flexibility to the arms. In a preferred embodiment, the arms are waisted, i.e. the width of the arms reduces towards the middle of said arms.
Typically, the length of the arms is in the range 10 - 20 cm, preferably 13 - 17 cm, more preferably 14-16 cm, most preferably about 15 cm. Preferably, the hinge portion is a split cylinder having a longitudinal split line, in which the arms extend from the portions of the cylinder defining the split line.
The closure portion may include a receptacle disposed on the end of one of said arms and an engagement portion disposed on the end of the other of said arms, wherein the engagement portion can be brought into releasable engagement with the receptacle. The engagement portion and receptacle may operate in the manner of a latch. Preferably, the engagement portion includes a projection which can be brought into releasable engagement with a projection retaining portion of the receptacle. Advantageously, the projection portion faces outwardly of the clip. In these embodiments, the flexing of the arms which is caused when the clip accommodates the duvet or quilt and cover between the arms causes the projection to lock more firmly.
The clip can be formed from any suitable plastics material which provides a suitable degree of flexibility in the arms. The clip may be formed from polypropylene or a modified polypropylene.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided the use of a clip according to the first aspect of the invention in holding a duvet or quilt in place within a cover by positioning the clip across a corner of the cover having the duvet or quilt disposed therein and closing the closure portion thereby to hold the duvet or quilt in place.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a method of encasing a duvet or quilt within an outer cover including the steps of: providing one or more clips according to the first aspect of the invention; partially encasing a duvet or quilt within the cover by disposing the duvet or quilt within one or more corners of the covers; positioning the clip across a corner of the cover having the duvet or quilt disposed therein and closing the closure portion thereby to hold the quilt or duvet in place within the cover; and encasing the remainder of the duvet or quilt within the cover.
Preferably, two adjacent corners of the cover having a duvet or quilt disposed within are each held by a clip according to the first aspect of the invention. Whilst the invention has been described above, it extends to any inventive combination of the features set out above, or in the following description, drawings or claims.
Embodiments of clips in accordance with the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which :- Figure 1 shows (a) a perspective view and (b) a plan view of a clip of the invention;
Figure 2 shows side views of the clip of Figure 1 in (a) an opened configuration and (b) a closed configuration; Figure 3 is a side view of the clip of Figure 1 positioned across the corner of a duvet which is encased within a cover; and
Figure 4 shows (a) the positioning of a clip about a corner of a duvet encased in a cover; (b) a pair of adjacent corners of a duvet encased within a cover which have been clipped with clips of the invention; (c) a plan view of (b);
(d) the further encasement of the duvet within the cover and (e) the completion of a method of the invention.
Figures 1 and 2 show an embodiment of a clip of the invention, depicted generally at 10. The clip 10 includes a barrel shaped hinge portion 12 from which extends an upper arm 14 and a lower arm 16. The ends of the arms 14,
16 distal from the hinge portion 12 terminate in a closure portion, shown generally at 18. As explained in greater detail below, clips generally of the type shown in Figures 1 and 2 are extremely useful in assisting a user who is attempting to encase a duvet or a quilt within an outer cover. In part, this is because the arms 14, 16 are elongate and flexible in nature. The arms 14, 16 should be greater than 10 cms in length, and it has been found that, in practice, arms of length in the range 10 to 20 cms are suitable. Preferably, the length of the arms is in the range 13 to 17 cms, more preferably 14 to 16 cms, most preferably about 15 cms. The elongate nature of the arms assists in conferring flexibility. Additional factors which influence the flexibility of the arms are the nature of the material that the clip is formed from and the precise shape of the arms 14, 16. More particularly, it has been found to be advantageous to manufacture the clip from a suitable plastics material such as polypropylene. Also, the arms 14, 16 have a waist portion 14a, 16a towards the mid point of the arms 14, 16 between the hinge portion 12 and the closure portion 18. Another way in which the flexibility of the arms might be increased would be to reduce the thickness of the arms 14, 16 towards the mid point of the arms 14, 16 between the hinge portion 12 and the closure portion 18. This variation in the thickness of the arms may be accomplished instead or additional to the variation in the width of the arms.
The closure portion 18 comprises a lower receptacle portion 18a, and an upper engagement portion 18b. The receptacle portion 18a has an inner surface which defines a contoured recess region. The receptacle portion 18a has a front wall 18c having an inwardly facing surface 18d which in part defines the recess region. At the top of the front wall 18c is an inwardly facing lip 18e. The engagement portion 18b comprises a generally V shaped portion consisting of a first section 18f which downwardly depends from the upper arm 14 and a second section 18g which upwardly depends from a bottom edge of the first section 18f. The second section 18g is contoured so as to substantially conform to the contours of the recess defined by the inwardly facing surface 18d of the front wall 18c of the receptacle portion 18a. In particular, the second section 18g has an outwardly facing projection 18h which, in the closed position of the clip as shown in Figure 1 b fits underneath and is thereby retained in place by the Mp 18e. Thus, the lip 18e and projection 18h acts in the manner of a latch. The engagement portion 18b further comprises a top portion 18i. The top portion 18i can be used by a user to depress the engagement portion 18b into engagement with the receptacle portion 18a, and can also be used to release the engagement portion 18b from engagement with the receptacle portion 18a by pushing the top portion 18i inwardly of the clip.
Figures 3 and 4 depict a method of encasing a duvet with a cover in accordance with an embodiment of the invention. Firstly, a user slips a duvet cover 40 over a portion of a duvet 42 so that two adjacent corners of the duvet are contained within the cover. Next, clips 44 are positioned across these corners and the clips are closed by closing their closure portions. In Figures 3 and 4, the clips 44 are of the type depicted in Figures 1 and 2. As shown in Figure 3, the clips of the invention are sufficiently flexible that the thickness of the duvet and cover corner can be accommodated. Advantageously, the clip is able to accommodate a range of thicknesses, reflecting the different dimensions of duvets and quilts which are commonly available. It is an advantageous feature of clips of the general design shown in Figures 1 to 4 that the presence of a relatively thick mass such as a duvet between the arms of the clip causes the clip to be more securely held in its closed position. This is because the flexing of the arms of the clip causes the projection 18g to be pushed more firmly against the receptacle portion 18a including the lip 18d. With the two corners of the duvet/cover held securely in place by clips, it is a relatively simply task for a user to pull the cover 40 down over the remainder of the duvet 42. The duvet 42 is then located in the remaining two corners of the cover 40, and the now encased duvet together with the cover can be shaken out by the user.
Clips of the type depicted above are particularly useful. However, numerous variations would occur to the skilled person. For example, it may be possible to utilise different types of hinges and/or different forms of closure mechanisms. Furthermore, it may be possible to dispense with the waist on the arms if a reduction in the thickness of the arms towards their midpoints is employed, or if a sufficiently flexible plastics material is used to manufacture the clips.
