Abstract

 本発明のバックライト(照明装置)は、少なくとも一つの点状の光源(5)と、該光源からの光を拡散させて面発光させる導光体(7)とから構成される発光ユニット(11)を複数個有するタンデム型のバックライトである。この発光ユニット(11)では、光源(5)から出射され導光体(7)内で放射状に拡がる光束の横断面の大きさが、発光エリア(10)と導光エリア(9)との境界面において、当該境界面の大きさ以上となるように、導光エリア(9)の長さXが設定されている。さらに、光源(5)から発光エリア(10)へ向かう方向を長さ方向D1とすると、導光エリアの長さ方向D1の距離Xは、発光エリアの長さ方向D1の距離Y未満となっている。これにより、光源からの光をより均一に出射することのできるとともに、照明装置の厚みの増加を抑えた照明装置を実現する。
