Abstract

　本発明のバックライト（照明装置）は、少なくとも一つの点状の光源（５）と、該光源からの光を拡散させて面発光させる導光体（７）とから構成される発光ユニット（１１）を複数個有するタンデム型のバックライトである。この発光ユニット（１１）では、光源（５）から出射され導光体（７）内で放射状に拡がる光束の横断面の大きさが、発光エリア（１０）と導光エリア（９）との境界面において、当該境界面の大きさ以上となるように、導光エリア（９）の長さＸが設定されている。さらに、光源（５）から発光エリア（１０）へ向かう方向を長さ方向Ｄ１とすると、導光エリアの長さ方向Ｄ１の距離Ｘは、発光エリアの長さ方向Ｄ１の距離Ｙ未満となっている。これにより、光源からの光をより均一に出射することのできるとともに、照明装置の厚みの増加を抑えた照明装置を実現する。
