Definitions
- This invention relates to a fragrance-emitting device.
- it relates to a device that can emit fragrance in such a way that it is distributed throughout a room.
- air fresheners Many products and systems have been developed for dispersing a fragrant compound in a living space; generally referred to as "air fresheners". Aerosol sprays can disperse a fragrant composition when required. However, their effect is short-lasting and the intensity of fragrance is very variable. Therefore, an alternative type of air freshener has a volatile fragrance compound dispersed in a body such as a gel or wax from which is can evaporate. This provides a much more constant way to disperse a fragrant composition. However, the concentration of the volatised composition tends to diminish rapidly with distance from the air freshener. In an aim to overcome this, so-called “plug-in" air fresheners were proposed. These incorporate an electrical heating element to and a reservoir for a liquid fragrance composition. The heating element causes volatisation of the fragrance composition. However, these devices occupy an electrical socket outlet, which can be inconvenient, and there have instances of such devices catching fire.
- An aim of this invention is to provide a fragrance emitting device that allows a fragrance compound to be dispersed in a space in a manner that is more constant over time and throughout the volume of a room than is the case with aerosol or gel-type air freshener without the disadvantages of the plug-in type.
- this invention provides a fragrance-emitting device comprising a body within which a fragrance composition is dispersed, the body being adapted to be carried on a heating radiator. Fragrance composition can thereby be distributed by a convecting air stream generated by the radiator.
- the body includes a resin within which the fragrance composition is dispersed.
- the resin may be localised as pellets dispersed within a polymer matrix, the matrix being formed to the shape of the body.
- the resin itself may be formed to the shape of the body.
- the body may be formed as a length cut from an extrusion.
- the body may be shaped to incorporate a mounting formation that can cooperate with part of a radiator to retain the body in place.
- a mounting formation that can cooperate with part of a radiator to retain the body in place.
- this may include a groove into which an upper part of a radiator can be received.
- One or more magnets may be incorporated into the body. The magnets assist in retaining the body in place on a steel radiator.
- the materials of the body are selected to withstand the temperatures likely to be encountered on a radiator. For use with heating systems that use water to distribute heat, this will not significantly exceed 100 0 C. Resistance to a lower temperature, for example, 85 0 C may be sufficient. Moreover, the volatility of the fragrance is selected to ensure that sufficient composition is volatised, while providing a sufficient life for the product. Volatility can be controlled by selection of a suitable fragrance, selecting a suitable resin within which to incorporate it, selecting the concentration of the fragrance within the resin, and optionally selection of a matrix within which to incorporate the resin.
- Figures 1 and 2 are views of a fragrance emitting device being an embodiment of the invention.
- Figure 3 shows the device of Figures 1 and 2 mounted on a radiator.
- a fragrance-emitting device has a body 10 of plastic material.
- the body 10 has a constant cross-section so that it can be made as an extrusion that is cut into lengths.
- the outline of the cross-section of the body is generally equilaterally triangular, with sides approximately 40 mm. It is intended for use with one of its vertices 16 pointing upwards.
- a longitudinally extending, rounded groove 12 is formed in each of the surfaces that are upward- facing in this configuration, each groove being approximately 15 mm wide and 2 mm in depth at its deepest.
- a mounting groove 14 is formed in the lower surface.
- the mounting groove is generally semicircular in section with radius approximately 10 mm.
- a small V-shaped slot 18 approximately 5 mm in depth is formed in the mounting groove 14, pointing towards the opposite, upwardly pointing vertex 16.
- each wall of the mounting groove 14 there is provided a respective permanent magnet 20.
- the magnets 20 may be positioned generally centrally of the groove, as shown in Figure 2. Alternatively, magnets may be provided close to opposite ends of each wall. The magnets are preferably incorporate into the extrusion during its manufacture.
- the plastic material from which the body 10 is formed incorporates a fragrance composition.
- a suitable composition is a fragrance ingredients dispersed in a resin.
- the resin is chosen for its compatibility with the fragrance composition.
- a suitable material is produced by International Flavors and Fragrances, Inc., and sold under the trade name PoIyIFF. This material can be used of itself to form the body 10. Alternatively, the material may be used in granular form, granules being dispersed in a resin matrix. This is dependent upon the strength of fragrance that is required, and can be used to reduce the rate at which fragrance composition is volatised from the body. AU of the materials used in the body must be stable at temperatures in the region of 100 0 C.
- the body 10 is placed onto a heating radiator 22 as shown in Figure 3.
- a heating radiator 22 For conventional steel radiators, the upper part of a panel of the radiator enters the mounting groove 14.
- the welded seam 24 present on many radiator panels can be received within the V- shaped slot 18. This helps to retain the body 10 in place.
- the body 10 is further retained by magnetic attraction between the magnets 20 and the radiator 22.
- the body 10 may be placed on the flat upper surface that is present in many radiators made of light alloys.
- the heat of the radiator has the effect of increasing the rate of volatisation of fragrance composition from the body.
- the volatised fragrance composition is carried within the convecting air stream that is generated by the radiator, thereby distributing fragrance throughout the room in which the radiator is located.
- the rounded grooves in the upper faces of the body help a person to grip the body when placing it on and removing it from a radiator.
- PoIyIFF is a registered trade mark of International Flavors and Fragrances, Inc.
