Description

DESCRIPTION
VACUUM VANE PUMP WITH DISCHARGE VALVE
The subject of the present invention is an improved vacuum pump, especially a single blade vacuum pump. In the technique are generally called "vacuum pumps" the pumps intended to generate and maintain a depression in an air tank. One of the most frequent applications of the vacuum pumps takes place in the motor vehicles, in order to render available a depression suitable for activating pneumatic servomotors for brake assistance or other apparatuses. To this aim, use is gen- erally made of blade pumps, which may be single blade pumps or plural blades pumps.
It is known that, for a correct operation, the single blade vacuum pumps need to have a low inertia outlet valve, in order to ensure a complete separation between the intake steps and the outlet steps, thus preventing any air return through the outlet opening. On the contrary, usually such a valve is not needed for the plural blades pumps, wherein the separation among the different steps is operated by the blades themselves.
Usually, the valve needed for a single blade vacuum pump comprises a flexible lamellar shutter, movable between a first position in which the shut- ter is applied from outside against the outlet opening of the pump and a second position far away from the outlet opening of the pump. In the first position the lamellar shutter prevents a fluid intake through the outlet aperture, whereas in the second position the lamellar shutter allows air and lubricating oil to come out through the outlet opening of the pump. This second position is usually limited by a stop member.
However, the known single blade vacuum pumps have some disadvantages. When the vacuum pump is stopped, some depression lasts in the pump chamber, and then some oil is sucked inside the chamber through the lubrication channel and through the clearances existing between the rotor and the body of the pump, and the presence of the oil in the pump chamber gives rise to problems when subsequently the engine is started, or during a vehicle maneuver which generates an inverse rotation of the engine. In effect, in such conditions the mechanical torque strongly increases, and this can cause damages or breaks in the vacuum pump or in the mechanisms connected thereto. Moreover, this kind of pumps puts particular requirements about the position in which the pump should be installed on the engine, because it is suitable that the pump outlet is provided in the bottom part of the pump. Although these disadvantages are characteristic of the single blade vacuum pumps, sometimes they may be present even in plural blades vacuum pumps wherein, in view of a particular installation necessity, are present conditions in which some liquid may penetrate in the pump when this latter is stopped.
The main object of the present invention is to improve a vacuum pump, especially a single blade vacuum pump, in order to avoid or reduce the disadvantages of the known single blade vacuum pumps. More particularly, it is an object of the invention that of timely preventing the persistency of a de- pression in the pump chamber after the pump stop. Another object of the invention is that of ensuring a greater freedom in choosing the installation position of the pump. A further object of the invention is that of attaining the stated objects by using means very simple and inexpensive.
According to the invention, these objects are attained by a vacuum pump comprising a pump chamber, a blade pumping mechanism, an outlet opening, and valve means suitable for allowing fluids to pass through said outlet opening in the exit sense and for preventing fluids to pass through said outlet opening in the entry sense, characterized in that, in addition, said outlet opening comprises a permanent communication with the outside, through a passage having a little section and being permanently open.
In this way, in view of the little section of said passage, the presence of the same does not involve any noticeable reduction in the performances of the pump, when this latter is operating, but such a little passage is sufficient for causing a quick cancellation of the depression existing inside the pump chamber, when the pump is stopped. In this way, the stated disadvantages are prevented, and more particularly it is avoided that at the pump stop some lubricating oil is sucked inside the pump chamber, thus generating the subsequent problems. It is also possible to install the vacuum pump on the engine in a unfavorable position, namely, the outlet valve may be situated in a posi- tion not at bottom, or it may also be situated in an area wherein oil sacks could arise, although it is always recommended that the region in which the oil is discharged from the pump is sufficiently drained.
According to a preferred feature of the invention, said passage having a little section and being permanently open consists in a little hole formed in said valve means, which are embodied in the form of a lamellar shutter movable between a closure position and a passage position. In this way the invention may be realized in the more simple and inexpensive way.
However, the characteristic of the invention may also be realized by different constructional solutions, as for example by various kinds of openings or vents provided in the valve means controlling the outlet opening of the pump, or even by grooves or vents provided in the seatings of said valve means.
These and other features, objects and advantages of the subject of the present invention will more clearly appear from the following description of a preferred embodiment, being however a not limiting example, the description being drawn with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figures 1 and 2 illustrate in two orthogonal cross sections a single blade vacuum pump, in order to recall its structure and operation. Figure 3 shows the cross section of a single blade vacuum pump improved according to the present invention, in its more simple embodiment.
With reference to Figures 1 and 2, number 1 designates the pump body, wherein is delimited the pump chamber 2-3. The pump chamber is subdivided in a suction chamber 2 and a compression chamber 3, by the presence of a single blade 4 intended to rotate in a counterclock sense, according to this example, and driven by a rotor 5. The end portions of blade 4 slide contacting the inner wall of body 1 , and the sealing is ensured by an oil film introduced through a passage 6. The pump sucks air through an inlet connection 7 put in communication with the tank in which a depression is to be created and maintained, and the pump ejects the air and the excess lubricating oil through an outlet opening 8.
As it may be observed in Figure 3, the outlet opening 8 is equipped with a lamellar shutter 9, which is represented in the position in which it is applied from outside against the outlet opening 8 in order to prevent intake of fluids. When the lamellar shutter 8 displaces away from the outlet opening 8 for allowing fluids to exit, it comes to rest against a stop member 11 , which limits the displacement freedom of the shutter.
According to the invention, in order to put the outlet opening 8 in per- manent communication with the outside through a passage having a little section and permanently open, a little hole 10 is formed in the lamellar shutter 9.
As it may be observed, the cross section of hole 10 is very little with respect to the cross section of the outlet opening 8, and therefore its presence cannot affect in a noticeable manner the operation of the pump and its per- formances. On the other hand, when the pump is stopped, the hole 10 allows some air to enter from the outside. Although very limited, this air entrance quickly compensates for the depression still remained in the pump chamber, and therefore it prevents the disadvantages which could be caused later on by said depression. As already said, the hole 10 formed in the lamellar shutter 9 embodies the more simple and inexpensive means for the realization of a little section passageway permanently open, which communicates the pump chamber with the outside. However, of course, other constructive solutions are possible. For example, any kind of opening or vent may be provided in the lamellar shutter 9 which controls the outlet opening 8 of the pump, or in the seat of the outlet opening 8, against which the lamellar shutter 9 comes to rest.
In the above, reference has been made to the case of a single blade vacuum pump, which is foreseen as the main application of the invention. However it is to be understood that the characteristics of the invention may also be applied to plural blades vacuum pumps in those cases in which, in view of a particular installation necessity, are present conditions in which some liquid may penetrate in the pump when this latter is stopped.
This invention is not limited to the exemplary embodiment described and represented. Several possible modifications have been described, and various others are within the capacity of those skilled in the art.
The cited changes and others, and any replacement by technically equivalent means, may be introduced in what has been described and illustrated, without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of this Patent, as defined by the appended Claims.
