Abstract

The claimed refrigerating unit has an interior to be cooled and an ozone generator, the air in the interior being treated with ozone produced in the ozone generator in order to eliminate, kill, destroy or combat smells, bacteria, viruses, mould, spores, germs, pathogens and other unwanted biological material commonly found in the interior of the unit. In the claimed method for operating this type of refrigerating unit, the air in the interior is treated with ozone that is produced by an ozone generator. The amount of ozone produced in each operating phase of the refrigerating unit is preferably adapted to the absorption patterns in the individual phases, thereby resulting in as constant an ozone concentration as possible in the refrigerator. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the ozone production is not constant, but is influenced as a function of the states within the refrigerating unit so that the situatively different decay rates of the ozone are taken into consideration with the aim of achieving a largely constant ozone concentration inside the refrigerating unit.
