Description

OVEN WITH CAVITY HAVING TURNTABLE AND HEATER
The present invention relates to an oven comprising an oven cavity provided with a turntable and further comprising a radiant electric heater.
Ovens such as microwave ovens are known, comprising an oven cavity having therein a rotatable turntable for supporting food to be heated. It is known to locate a radiant electric heater above the turntable for grilling, browning or baking the food on the turntable. Such a radiant heater is known to be located above a substantially semi-circular portion of the turntable, such that food on the rotating turntable passes under the heater.
A problem with such an arrangement is that food located near a peripheral region of the rotating turntable tends to be heated to a lesser degree than food located at, or near, a central region of the rotating turntable. This results in uneven cooking of the food. Furthermore, this problem is exacerbated by the fact that significant heat loss can occur at edge regions of a radiant heater with the result that there is a reduction in effective radiant heat energy from such a heater at peripheral regions thereof. It is an object of the present invention to overcome or minimise this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided an oven comprising an oven cavity provided therein with a rotatable turntable for supporting one or more items to be heated, and a radiant electric heater located above the turntable and incorporating at least one heating element, wherein the at least one heating element is of overall substantially circular form and overlies the turntable substantially concentric therewith such that an item to be heated in the oven is heated to substantially the same extent, when located on the turntable, substantially regardless of its position of location on the turntable.
The heater may be arranged to substantially completely overlie the turntable.
The heater may be of substantially circular form.
The at least one heating element may be adapted and arranged to have a power density at a substantially circular peripheral region thereof which is greater than a power density at a central region thereof. The at least one heating element may be adapted and arranged whereby the power density at the substantially circular peripheral region thereof is from 110 to 140 percent, and preferably from 120 to 130 percent, of the power density at the central region thereof.
The power density of the at least one heating element at the substantially circular peripheral region thereof may be of the order of 5 watts per square centimetre and the power density of the heating element at the central region thereof may be of the order of 4 watts per square centimetre .
The at least one heating element may comprise spaced apart turns of elongate electrical conductor material having adjacent turns more closely spaced at the substantially circular peripheral region thereof than at the central region thereof.
The spaced apart turns of elongate electrical conductor material may be arranged in single or multiple spiral form. Such multiple spiral form may be a double spiral form.
The at least one heating element may be of wire or ribbon form and may be supported on a base layer of electrical insulation material, such as microporous thermal and electrical insulation material. The base layer of insulation material may be provided in a dish-like support, such as of metal, and which may be of substantially circular form.
A single heating element may be provided.
The oven may comprise a microwave oven.
By means of the present invention, an item, such as a food item, supported on the rotatable turntable for heating by the radiant electric heater, is heated to a substantially similar degree regardless of where it is located on the turntable. This results from the provision of the at least one substantially circular heating element overlying the turntable. The arrangement of greater power density of the at least one heating element at the substantially circular peripheral region thereof, than at the central region thereof, may be used further to compensate for heat losses at the edge of the heater and at the edge of the turntable.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show more clearly how it may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a top plan view representation of one embodiment of an oven according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a front view of a radiant heater forming part of the oven of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of the heater of Figure 2.
Referring to Figure 1, an oven 2, such as a microwave oven, has a door 4 and is provided with an oven cavity 6. A well known form of circular turntable 8 is provided in the oven cavity 6 and is arranged for rotation by well known means (not shown) . The turntable 8 is intended for supporting one or more food items to be heated.
A radiant electric heater 10 is located at the top of the oven cavity 6, above the turntable 8 and substantially completely overlying the turntable 8.
As particularly shown in Figures 2 and 3, the heater 10 comprises a substantially circular metal dish-like support 12 containing a base layer 14 of insulation material, such as well known microporous thermal and electrical insulation material. An electrical heating element 16 of overall substantially circular form comprises spaced apart turns of elongate electrical conductor material arranged in the form of a double spiral. The heating element 16 is supported on the base layer 14 of insulation material and is electrically connected to a terminal block 18 for energising from a power supply (not shown) .
The heating element 16 can comprise any of the well known forms of element material, such as wire or ribbon forms. In particular, the heating element 16 comprises a corrugated metal ribbon supported edgewise on the base layer 14 of insulation material.
In the illustrated embodiment the heating element 16 is adapted and arranged to have a power density at a substantially circular peripheral region 20 thereof which is greater than a power density at a central region 22 thereof. This is achieved by providing adjacent turns 24 of the heating element 16 at the peripheral region 20 thereof which are more closely spaced than corresponding adjacent turns 26 of the heating element 16 at the central region thereof.
The provision of the substantially circular heating element 16 improves the uniformity of heating over the area of the turntable. The provision of a greater power density at the peripheral region 20 of the heater as compared with its central region 22, results in the heater 10 providing even greater uniformity of heating over the entire surface of the underlying turntable 8. Food items 28, 30 located respectively at central and peripheral regions of the turntable 8 are heated to substantially the same extent by the heater 10.
The greater power density at the substantially circular peripheral region 20 of the heating element 16 is selected relative to that at the central region 22 of the heating element 16 to compensate for heat losses at the edge 32 of the heater 10 and at the edge of the underlying turntable 8. By way of example, the power density at the substantially circular peripheral region 20 of the heating element 16 may be from 110 to 140 percent, and preferably from 120 to 130 percent, of the corresponding power density at the central region 22 of the heating element 16. For example, the power density at the peripheral region 20 of the heating element 16 may be of the order of 5 watts per square centimetre whereas the corresponding power density at the central region 22 of the heating element 16 may be of the order of 4 watts per square centimetre.
