Description

Device for applying a reinforcement strip
The present invention relates to a device for applying a reinforcement strip to an assembly of tyre components for an unvulcanized tyre.
In order to improve the rigidity in the carcass of a radial tyre, especially when the carcass consists of only one carcass layer and specifically, but not exclusively, for radial tyres for luxury cars in the high speed category, a relatively narrow reinforcement strip is applied in the lower part of the tyre (for instance in the bead zone) . This reinforcement strip upgrades the compression rigidity and the lateral rigidity of the tyre, both important for the behaviour of the tyre, and instantaneous reaction to steering adjustments at high speeds of the car. In order that the tyre complies with the requirements of uniform rolling behaviour, the reinforcement strip should not be exposed to stretch during application to the tyre components, and the splice of the reinforcement strip should not coincide with the splice of the tyre com- ponents, which demands a lot of accuracy in applying the reinforcement strip to the tyre components. Up until now application was done by hand, resulting in both an inaccurate positioning at times and an irreproducible application of the reinforcement strip to the tyre com- ponents and also a sizeable percentage of waste, as well as a relatively low production rate.
An object of present invention is providing a device for applying a reinforcement strip to an assembly of tyre components for an unvulcanized tyre wherein a reinforcement strip is applied in a mechanized way, through which the accuracy and reproducibility can be improved, the percentage of waste reduced and the productivity rate increased. For this purpose the present invention provides a device for applying a reinforcement strip to an assembly of tyre components for an unvulcanized tyre, said device comprising a supply roll for containing a supply of rein- forcement strip said supply roll having a supply roll axis, a conveyor belt fitted around a number of conveyor rollers for conveying the assembly of tyre components in a conveyance direction, each conveyor roller having a conveyor roller axis substantially parallel to the supply roll axis, the conveyor rollers being placed at a distance from the supply roll seen in the direction of the supply roll axis, a number of reversing rollers for taking the reinforcement strip from the supply roll and for conveying reinforcement strip without stretch, the number of rever- sing rollers comprising an end-reversing roller placed at a short distance above the conveyor belt for guiding the reinforcement strip in the conveyance direction, said end- reversing roller containing an end-reversing roller axis parallel to the conveyor roller axes, a supporting surface placed at a distance above the conveyor belt for receiving and supporting the reinforcement strip coming from the end-reversing roller, a cutting device for cutting reinforcement strip situated on the supporting surface, and a device for picking up a cut end of reinforcement strip from the supporting surface and for moving the cut end of reinforcement strip from the supporting surface to tyre components situated on the conveyor belt.
The end-reversing roller, the supporting surface, the cutting device and the device for picking up and moving a cut end of reinforcement strip are preferably integrated in one sub-assembly.
When the sub-assembly is moveable in the direction of the end-reversing roller axis, the reinforcement strip can be applied on every position to the tyre components. The device is preferably provided with a press roller for pressing the reinforcement strip to the tyre components, so that a good, reproducible attachment of the reinforcement strip to the tyre components can be realized.
Besides applying reinforcement strip to tyre components the device according to the invention appeared to be suitable for applying other and possibly more than one strip to tyre components.
Some embodiments of a device for applying a reinforcement strip to an assembly of tyre components for an unvulcanized tyre will be exemplified by means of the drawing. It shows :

Figure 15A-15D schematically in cross section parts of alternative versions of green tyres supplied with a reinforcement strip;
Figure 16A-16D schematically the placing of the tyre components and the reinforcement strip according to an alternative version of a green tyre.
The invention will be exemplified hereinafter by means of a device for applying two reinforcement strips to an assembly of tyre components, although it will be clear that the invention is also suitable for applying one or more than two reinforcement strips .
Figure 1 schematically shows a side view of a device for applying a reinforcement strip 1 to an assembly of tyre components 2 for an unvulcanized tyre. Said device comprising a supply roll 3 containing a supply of reinforcement strip 1, said supply roll 3 having a supply roll axis 4.
Said device further comprising a conveyor belt 6 fitted around a number of conveyor rollers 5, 5' for conveying the assembly of tyre components 2 in a conveyance direction 7. Each conveyor roller 5, 5' having a conveyor roller axis 8, 8' running at least substantially parallel to the supply roll axis 4, the conveyor rollers 5, 5' being placed at a distance from the supply roll 3 seen in the direction of the supply roll axis 4. This results in a so-called off-center placing of the supply roll 3 and the conveyor belt 6, said off-center placing being clearly visible in figure 2. Because of this placing the supply rolls of reinforcement strip material are easy and quick to replace or change . A number of reversing rollers 11 take the reinforcement strip 1 from the supply roll 3 and conveys the reinforcement strip 1 without stretch through the device . The number of reversing rollers 11 comprises an end-reversing roller 9 placed at a short distance above the conveyor belt 6 for guiding reinforcement strip 1 in the conveyance direction 7, said end-reversing roller 9 containing an end-reversing roller axis 10 running parallel to the conveyor roller axes 8, 8' .
At a distance above the conveyor belt 6 a supporting - surface 12 is placed for receiving and supporting the reinforcement strip 1 coming from the end-reversing roller 9. A cutting device 13, for instance in the form of a disc-shaped blade diagonally or transversely moveable over the supporting surface 12, is meant for cutting reinforcement strip 1 situated on the supporting surface 12.
Finally the device for applying a reinforcement strip 1 to an assembly of tyre components 2 contains a device 14 for picking up a cut end 15 of reinforcement strip 1 from the supporting surface 12 and moving said cut end 15 of reinforcement strip 1 from the supporting surface 12 to tyre components 2 which are situated on the conveyor belt 6. The device 14 for picking up and moving a cut end 15 of reinforcement strip 1 preferably contains a vacuum cup 16, so that regardless of the composition of the reinforcement strip 1 it can be picked up from the supporting surface 12. When the reinforcement strip 1 contains metal wires the device for picking up and moving the reinforcement strip 1 can also contain magnetic means.
Figures 3, 4 and 5 schematically show the path of the reinforcement strip 1 through the device. As the supply roll 3 is placed off-center compared to the conveyor belt 6 and a compact construction is wanted, the reinforcement strip 1 has to undergo a number of turns . These turns should not cause unwanted stretch in the material, which necessitates a number of reversing rollers 11, for instance placed as shown in figures 3 , 4 and 5. Figure 3 is a side view, figure 4 a view from above and figure 5 a front view of the most important parts of the device according to the invention to clearly show the path of the reinforcement strip.
Figure 6 schematically shows in rear view the two sub- assemblies in which an end-reversing roller 9, a supporting surface 12, a cutting device 13 and a device 14 for picking up and moving a cut end 15 of reinforcement strip 1 are integrated. The sub-assemblies are preferably moveable in the direction of the end-reversing roller axis 10, so the distance between the reinforcement strips 1 can be adjusted dependent on, for instance the width of, the green tyre to be produced eventually. In figure 7 a view from above is shown in which the two sub-assemblies are placed against each other in the closest possible way.
In figure 8 a sub-assembly in side view is shown. From this figure it appears that the device preferably is provided with a press roller 17 for pressing the reinforcement strip 1 to the tyre components 2, so a suf- ficient attachment of the reinforcement strip 1 to the assembly of tyre components can be obtained.
In figures 9-14 the working of the device according to the invention is schematically shown in steps. In figure 9 the assembly of tyre components 2 is conveyed to a fixed position on the conveyor belt 6 and the reinforcement strip 1 which has been brought onto the supporting surface, is cut by the disc-shaped blade, resulting in a cut end 15 of reinforcement strip.
Subsequently the vacuum cup 16 is placed on the cut end 15 of the reinforcement strip 1 and the vacuum cup is ac- tivated to hold the cut end 15, as shown in figure 10. Then the vacuum cup 16 with the cut end 15 is moved in the conveyance direction, over such a distance that there is a distance between the beginning of the assembly of the tyre components and the cut end 15 of the reinforcement strip.
The vacuum cup 16 then presses the cut end 15 of the reinforcement strip to the assembly of tyre components 2 (figure 11) , the vacuum cup 16 is deactivated and it goes back to its point of departure. The conveyor belt 6 is set in motion and conveys the assembly of tyre components 2 together with the reinforcement strip, the press roller pressing the reinforcement strip 1 to the tyre components 2.
Subsequently the conveyor belt 6 is stopped and the assembly of tyre components 2 is cut at the right length (18; figure 12), after which the conveyor belt 6 is set in motion again, so the reinforcement strip 1 is in the right place under the disc-shaped blade. The vacuum cup 16 is pressed on the reinforcement strip 1 and the disc-shaped blade cuts the reinforcement strip 1 at the right length, as shown in figure 13.
Finally the vacuum cup 16 is moved upwards from the rein- forcement strip 1, and the remainder of the reinforcement strip is pressed to the assembly tyre components 2 during conveyance from the conveyor belt 6, and the assembly is ready to be arranged on a tyre building drum (not represented) .
Because of the device according to the invention it is possible to apply one or several reinforcement strips at various places to the tyre components.
Some examples of such a placing are shown in figures
15A-15D. The assembly of the tyre components in these examples comprise for instance a so-called body ply, side wall, innerliner and a bead core. In figures 15A and 15B the reinforcement strip 1 is applied around the entire bead core, wherein in figure 15B a much broader reinfor- cement strip 1 than in figure 15A is applied. In figure 15C the reinforcement strip 1 is applied to the outside, and in figure 15D to the inside.
After a reinforcement strip 1 is applied to an assembly of tyre components if so desired other tyre components can be applied to the reinforcement strip as schematically shown in steps in figures 16A-16D.
The device according to present invention appears to make mechanized application of reinforcement strips to an assembly of tyre components possible, because of which green tyres can be produced more reproducibly, more accurately and faster.
