  • syringe' shall be taken to include any form of syringe which generally comprises a tubular body having a closed one end and which slidably supports a plunger to define a chamber between the plunger and the closed end which is of variable volume wherein the one end is provided with a passageway to permit the flow of fluid into and out of the passageway in accordance with the movement of the plunger.
  • a needle support assembly for a syringe comprising a longitudinal passage, a hollow needle supported within the passage, a handle member mounted to one end of the needle, the other end of the needle being provided with a first opening, a passageway provided through the wall of the passage towards one end of the passage, said passageway communicating with the chamber of the syringe, said needle being movable between a first position at which it is fully accommodated within the passage and a second position at which the one end of the needle extends from the one end of the passage, a second opening in the wail of the needle positioned such that when the needle is in its second position the second opening will communicate with the passageway, a first seal provided between the passage and the needle which will sealingly isolate the passageway, a second seal provided which will engage the second opening when the needle is in the first position and on movement of the needle to the first position is permanently sealingly disengaged from the second opening.
  • the second seal is slidably and sealingly supported on the needle and the movement of the needle to the second position causes the second seal to be disengaged from the second opening.

  • the body of the needle support assembly 12 is formed with a longitudinal passage 18 which is parallel with the central longitudinal axis of the syringe which receives a hollow needle 19.
  • One end 20 of the hollow needle 19 is received by a handle member 21 which rigidly retains the needle and closes the one end of the needle.
  • the other end 22 of the needle is formed with a first opening.
  • the side wall of the passage 18 is provided with a longitudinal slot which enables the handle member 21 to slidably move longitudinally along the needle support assembly and cause the movement of the needle 19 through the passageway.
  • Suitable detent means 31 in the form of notches in the side wall of the slot are provided at each end of the slot to enable the handle member 21 to be retained at a first position as shown at Figure 1 at which the needle 19 is fully accommodated within the passage and a second position as shown at Figure 2 at which the needle 19 extends from the one end 23 of the passage.
  • the detent means 31 comprises a pair of spaced lateral openings provided in the side wall of the slot to form notches which can selectively cooperate with a pawl member 32 provided in the side wall of an axial recess 33 formed in the free end of the handle 21 which will enable the handle member 21 to be caused to be incapable of axial movement along the slot when the pawl 32 is engaged with the notch at either end of the slot and when the needle is at its first and second positions.
  • radially directed pressure is applied to the handle 21 to cause resilient flexure of the handle and consequent disengagement of the pawl 32 from the detent 31.
  • the end wall of the slot proximate the one end 13 is formed with a second detent 29 in the form of a tapered enlargement while the free end of the handle member 21 is provided with a recess 33 which will engage with the second detent 31 when the handle member and needle is moved to a third position outward from the first position as shown at Figure 3.
  • the recess is configured to have an opening of reduced dimensions compared to the inner portion of the recess as shown in order that when the second detent 31 is received in the recess 33, the handle member cannot be disengaged from the end wall of the slot without damage to one or both components.
  • the needle support assembly 12 may be provided with a cap means 24 which is receivable over the one end of the passage 23 to sealingly close the passage when the needle 19 is in the first position and prior to usage of the needle and when the needle has been moved to the third position subsequent to usage.
  • the passage 18 accommodates a tubular seal 25 in the region of the passageway 17 which is provided with an aperture 26 in the side wall which will communicate with the passageway 17.
  • the seal 25 has an internal bore such that it will sealingly engage side walls of the needle 19 when the needle is located in the proximity of the first seal 25.
  • the needle 19 is provided with a second opening 27 located towards the one end 20 of the needle and which is positioned such that when the needle is in the second position as shown at Figure 2 the second opening 27 will communicate with the aperture 26 in the first seal 25 and therefore communicate with the passageway 17.
  • a second seal 28 of a generally tubular configuration is slidably and sealingly received over the needle and has a diameter less than that of the internal bore of the passage 18 such that movement of the needle between the first and second position will not engage the sidewalls of the passage 18.
  • the second seal 28 is received over the second opening 27 in the needle 19 to sealingly close the second opening.
  • the needle 19 is of a length such that when it is in the first position its other end will be sealingly engaged with the first seal 25 at a position inward from the aperture 26 provided in the first seal and such that the needle will, not interfere with fluid communication between the internal bore of the seal outward of the aperture 26.
  • the syringe having a needle support assembly of the form as shown at Figures 1 , 2 and 3 is initially supplied in the form as shown at Figure 1 where the needle is retracted to the first position.
  • the cap 24 (if provided) is removed from the one end 23 of the passage 18. Fluid is to be drawn into the syringe and this can be effected by manipulation of the plunger in the conventional manner such that fluid is drawn into the one end 23 of the passage 18, through the outward end of the first seal 25, the aperture 26, the passageway 17 and the outlet 16.
  • the needle 19 is then moved to its second position as shown at Figure 2.
  • the second seal 28 is slidably displaced longitudinally along the needle 19 towards the handle member 21 to uncover the second aperture and to enable the second aperture 27 to move into position opposite the aperture 26 provided in the first seal.
  • the needle 19 can be retracted to its first position.
  • the needle can be further retracted to the third position further inward from the second position as shown at Figure 3.
  • the third position as shown at Figure 3 the one end 22 of the needle is located inward of the first seal 25.
  • the second seal 28 will have been displaced from engagement with the second opening 27 in the needle. Therefore when the needle is in its third position as shown at Figure 3 the second opening will be in open communication with the interior of the passage 18 and thus to the exterior of the needle support assembly as a result of the slot in the side wall of the passage.
  • the first embodiment provides a needle support assembly whereby a needle can be initially stored in the first position at which it is fully contained in the needle support assembly and yet when in that position the syringe can be utilised in a conventional manner in order to have fluid drawn into the syringe.
  • the needle When it becomes necessary to administer the contents of the syringe the needle is moved to the second position at which it can be exposed.
  • the needle On completion of the utilisation of the syringe the needle can be withdrawn to the third position at which fluid cannot be drawn into the syringe.
  • the engagement of the handle member 21 with the walls of the passage 18 when at the third position is such that the needle cannot again be moved to the second position without damage to the body of the needle support assembly and/or the handle member.
  • the second embodiment as shown at figure 4 corresponds with the needle support assembly of the first embodiment with the exception that the needle support assembly comprises a separate component which in use is applied to the to a conventional the syringe in a similar manner to the attachment for a syringe which is disclosed in WO 93/09824. In all other respects the second embodiment corresponds to the first embodiment.
  • the one end 23 of the passage may be formed as a boss having the configuration of a "Luer” taper or such other form as may be appropriate.
  • the handle member may be such that on the needle being moved from the second position to the first position or alternatively to the third position the handle member can be broken or detached from the body to prevent further manipulation of the needle.
  • the detent means may each comprise a lateral opening provided in the side wall of the slot which will enable the handle member to be caused to rotate about the central axis of the needle and whereby on rotation of the handle member it will be received in the opening to be incapable of axial movement along the slot.

Abstract

Ensemble de support d'aiguille (12) conçu pour une seringue (12) composée d'un corps dont la longueur comporte un passage (18), d'une aiguille creuse (19) supportée à l'intérieur du passage (18), d'un élément de manipulation (21) monté à une extrémité de l'aiguille (19), l'autre extrémité (22) de l'aiguille (19) étant pourvue d'une première ouverture, d'un orifice de communication (17) pratiqué à travers la paroi du passage (18) vers une extrémité (23) du passage, ledit orifice (17) étant conçu pour communiquer avec la chambre de la seringue (12), ladite aiguille (19) étant mobile entre une première position dans laquelle elle loge entièrement à l'intérieur du passage (18) et une deuxième position dans laquelle l'une des extrémités de l'aiguille (19) s'étend depuis l'extrémité (23) du passage (18), d'une deuxième ouverture (27) dans la paroi de l'aiguille (19) placée de telle façon que, quand l'aiguille (19) se trouve dans sa deuxième position, cette deuxième ouverture (27) communiquera avec l'orifice de communication, d'un premier joint (25) situé entre le passage (18) et l'aiguille (19) qui isolera de manière étanche l'orifice de communication (17), d'un deuxième joint (28) qui viendra en contact avec la deuxième ouverture (27), quand l'aiguille (19) se trouve dans la première position et qui, lorsque l'aiguille (19) est déplacée vers la deuxième position, est dégagé en permanence de la deuxième ouverture (27).
