Abstract
A jigsaw puzzle for the formation of mosaic compositions for educational and/or ornamental use comprises a base in the form of a wooden board (1) carrying a representation (2) which corresponds to the mosaic composition to be formed, and a plurality of flat component pieces (3) which can be fitted together along their edges to form the composition. The component pieces have front surfaces (5) constituted by veneers of various kind of wood and back surfaces (6) which are adapted to be fixed to the base board (1) by means of adhesive.
Description
A jigsaw puzzle for the formation of mosaic compositions for educational and/or ornamental use.
The subject of the present invention is a jigsaw puzzle for the formation of mosaic compositions for educational and/or ornamental use.
The puzzle according to the invention is characterised in that it comprises: a base in the form of a wooden board carrying a representation which corresponds to the mosaic composition to be formed, and a plurality of flat component pieces which can be fitted together along their edge-.? to form tne composition, the component pieces having front surfaces constituted by veneers of different kinds of wood and back surfaces which are adapted to be fixed to the base board by means of adhesive.
As well as constituting a useful and amusing pastime, the puzzle according to the invention has the advantage of enabling the formation of compositions of considerable aesthetic quality which can conveniently be used as ornaments.
Preferably, the component pieces are parts of sheets which include a veneer layer, a layer of supporting material, and possibly a self-adhesive layer with a peelable covering.
The use of the self-adhesive layer is not essential, however, since the component pieces can be applied to the base board with the aid of commonly used glues.
In order to facilitate the separation of the component pieces from the respective sheets, the latter conveniently have perforated lines around the outlines of the component pieces.
Alternatively, the component pieces could be provided loose, that is, ready for application to the base board, and in this case they would be provided mixed up in a package including the base board and possibly the glue.
The invention will now be described in detail with reference to the appended drawings, provided purely by way of non-limiting example, in which:
Figure 1 is a partially exploded perspective view of a jigsaw puzzle according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a section taken on the line II-II of Figure 1 on an enlarged scale,
Figure 3 shows a possible configuration of the component pieces of the puzzle before their use.
With reference initially to Figure 1, the puzzle according to the invention essentially comprises a board 1 of rigid material, normally wood, one face of which carries a representation 2, normally formed by silk-screen printing, whose outline defines the space which is intended to receive a set of component pieces 3 for forming a mosaic.
As shown in greater detail in Figure 2 , each piece 3 normally comprises an intermediate layer of supporting material 4, normally fabric, cardboard or simply glue, carrying a veneer layer 5 on one face and a layer of self-adhesive material 6 protected by a peelable sheet 7 on the opposite face.
The component pieces 3 are shaped so that they
interlock according to a predetermined pattern and their veneer layers 5 are of different kinds of wood.
The component pieces 3 may be provided loose and mixed up or may form parts of sheets, one of which is indicated 8 in Figure 3. These sheets 8, whose composition corresponds to that of the component pieces 3, conveniently have perforated lines 9 for facilitating the separation of the pieces 3. Alternatively, the pieces 3 may be separated from the respective sheets 8 by cutting.
Once they have been located in the correct arrangement, the component pieces are applied to the board 1 in correspondence with the representation 2 by means of their self-adhesive layers 6. Alternatively, these self-adhesive layers 6 may be omitted and the pieces 3 fixed to the board 1 by means of suitable glues.
When the puzzle is completed, a composition of particular aesthetic quality resulting from the different tones and surface appearances of the various veneers 5 of adjacent pieces 3 is produced on the board 1. This excellent decorative effect enables the board with the completed composition to be used as an ornament.
Claims
1. A jigsaw puzzle for the formation of mosaic compositions for educational and/or ornamental use, characterised in that it comprises: a base in the form of a wooden board (1) carrying a representation (2) which corresponds to the mosaic composition to be formed, and a plurality of flat comporent pieces (3) which can be fitted together along their edges to form the composition, the component pieces (3) having front surfaces (6) which are adapted to be fixed to the base board (1) by means of adhesive.
2. A puzzle according to Claim 1, characterised in that the component pieces (3) form parts of sheets (8) which include a veneer layer (5) , a layer of supporting material (4) , and possibly a self-adhesive layer (6) with a peelable covering (7) .
3. A puzzle according to Claim 2, characterised in that the sheets (8) have perforated lines (9) around the outlines of the component pieces (3) to facilitate their separation.
