Definitions

  • Control member for coulters of agricultural drills
  • This invention relates to agricultural drills, especially the coulter mounting and actuating mechanism of agricultural drills.
  • Pneumatic drills comprise a frame carrying a central seed hopper, metering means to dispense seed from the hopper, and distribution means to convey the seed in a flow of air to coulters spaced laterally across the width of the drill.
  • the coulters are pivotally mounted on the frame and are forced into work under control of an actuating mechanism comprising a rotatable control member connected to each coulter via an associated force transmitting spring.
  • the construction is lightweight and the drill is designed to be semi-mounted so as to reduce cost and increase work rate.
  • the coulters are pivotally mounted on a transverse beam so as to trail behind the beam, and the rotatable control member extends generally parallel to the beam and carries a plurality of levers each associated with a coulter and being connected thereto by a respective force transmitting tension spring.
  • the loading of the springs, and thus the depth of penetration of the coulters, is determined by the angular setting of the rotatable control member, which in turn is controlled by manual adjustment means.
  • a characteristic of this arrangement is that the tension in the force transmitting springs produces a reaction that increases the force needed to operate the manual adjustment means. Disclosure of the Inventicn

  • Each bearing 15 is a plane bearing comprising a two-part outer support 16 connected to the frame 1 and an inner ring 17 that is connected coaxially to the control beam 14 and is rotatably received in a circular cut-out 18 in the outer support 16.

  • the coulters swing upwards by contact with the ground and extend the springs 24 to increase the tension therein.
  • the weight of the coulters and the loading of the springs 24 therefore urge the tools 21 into work and determine the sowing depth of the coulters.
  • the angular setting of the control beam within the bearings 15 can be adjusted by a manual adjustment means 25' (figures 2 and 3). It will be clear from Figure 1, that anti ⁇ clockwise rotation of the control beam by the adjustment means 25 will further extend the springs 24 and therefore increase the tension therein.
  • the adjustment means 25 comprises a lever arm 26 connected to the control beam 14 and a vertical shaft 27 rotatably supported in a bearing 28 and having a lower portion 29 on which is threaded a sleeve 30 that cooperates with the end of lever arm 26 so that rotation of the shaft 27 moves the sleeve axially on the shaft and therefore pivots the lever arm 26.
  • a bevel gearwheel 31 at the upper end of the shaft 27 engages a bevel gearwheel 32 on a cross-shaft 33, and the outer free end 34 of the cross-shaft 33 is adapted for engagement by a winding handle, whereby shafts 33 and 27 can be rotated to move the lever arm 26 and adjust the angular setting of the control beam 14.
  • the coulters 5 are of two lengths one set having long arms 20 and the other set having short arms 20 so that the tools- 21 of each set are spaced apart in the direction of travel. Accordingly, the geometry of the tension springs 24 for the long and short coulters is also made different for each so as to ensure that the loading characteristics of both are the same. Adjustment of the control beam 14 then produces the same affect on sowing depth for both the long and short coulters.
