Abstract

A rapid reversing device for use in four cycle marine diesel engines having a direct reversing gear. The rapid reversing device includes several combustion cylinders among a plurality of combustion cylinders comprising an engine which are respectively provided with an intake cam (20) and a starting cam, each of the cams having a double profile and act twice per one revolution of a cam shaft when operating as a reversal cam, and further includes an exhaust cam and a fuel cam each of which has a circular profile and consequently, not acting as a cam. The cylinders operate the same as in a usual engine during normal toward running; however, upon rapid reversal, the cylinders act as brake cylinders and cooperate with the special double profiled cams to facilitate a rapid reduction in engine rotation when there is a reduction in forward rotation. On the other hand, when there is a rapid start to move backwards, the several cylinders act as in an air engine and promote engine-speed, up independently of the combustion in the other combustion cylinders. Furthermore, the exhaust air which has operated in the air engine is utilized as a part of the combustion air in the other combustion cylinders. Accordingly, the generation of black smoke etc. due to misfiring or irregular, combustion which is apt to occur upon rapid reversal can be prevented.
