CRANK CASE IMPLEMENT Original Filed Jan. 51. 1927 1m! II f 4 Reissued Mar. 4, 1930. R
HAROLD A. MGGOWAN, OF MASON CITY IOWA CRANK-CASE IMPLEMENT Original No. 1,668,245, dated May 1, 1928, Serial No. 165,020, filed January 31 1927. Application for reissue filed January 2, 1930. Serial No. 418,115.
My present invention relates to an imunderstood I have illustrated in Figure 1 a proved crank case implement which, while portion of the crank case C of an automotive capable of numerous uses of various natures vehicle and the closure nut N indicated in is especially designed and adapted for use in dotted lines, which latter is to be removed for removing the plug or nut that normally draining the oil from the crank case. 55
closes the opening for draining oil from In carrying out iny invention I utilize a crank cases of automotive vehicles, and for funnel as 1 having a spout 2 that is corrureceiving the oil drained therefrom when the gated at 3 to form a hand hold or grip for plug or nut is removed. As is well known the hand when the funnel or implement is 1 to those familiar with this work, great difiibeing used to start the nut N forclosing the .60 culty is encountered by the service man and opening, or for turning the nut after it has others in the preparation of the crank case first been loosened preparatory to draining for draining its oil, because of the inconthe case. venient location of the drain plug or nutr A flexible pipe or hose 4 is attached to the The primary object of my invention is the spout 2 in such manner that the latter may 05 provision of an implement or single tool that turn in the former as the implement is being may be conveniently carried by a service used as a wrench, and of course the hose is man into a pit, or beneath an automotive used to convey the oil to a desired place as vehicle at a service station or other place, it is drained from the crank case. T'o perwhen preparing to drain the crank case, and mit relative rotary movement of the funnel by means of which the closure plug or nut spout in the hose end the spout is provided may be removed. As the plug or nut is rewith an annular bead 5 andthis bead also moved, the oil draining through the opening prevents leaking of the oil from the joint. is also caught by the implement, thus pre- The wrench head is indicated a whole 2 venting waste or spilling, and permitting by the numeral 6 and this head is provided 7 the oil to be disposed of as desired. The inwith diametrically arranged or radially disvention consists in an implement, combining posed heads 7, 8 and 9 used as sockets to fit the elements of a wrench and funnel as will over various sizes of nuts similar to nut N.
hereinafter be more fully set forth and One of the arms of the head also has a head 30 claimed. 7 10 for use with a nut having a compleso In the accompanying drawings I have mentary socket in it, thus adapting the imillu'strated .one complete example of the plement for use with various equipments on physical embodiment of my invention different crank cases. i wherein the parts are combined and arranged Within the large upper, end of the funnel according to the best mode I have thus far supported a cross bar 11, the free ends of devised for the practical application of the which project outwardly beyond the upper principles of my invention. peripheral portion of the funnel and are Figure 1 is a view showing the utility of utilized as handles by means of which the the implement as it is applied to a portion funnel and wrench head are turned when of the crank case of an automotive vehicle loosening the nut preparatory to removing at) and with a drain hose attached. it and when tightening the nut on the nipple Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View of the of the crank case. implement. This bar is journaled bearing bosses 12 Figure 3 is a sectional view at line 3-3 of and'13 on the inner face of the body vof the Figure 1 showing the wrench-heads. funnel and the bar may be turned in the bear Figure 4 is a detail sectional view showing, ings or slid in them, the former for selecting at line 44, the means for locking the wrench a socket head of the wrench andthe latter for in adjusted position. locking the wrench head selected, fixed In order that the utility, general arrangeposition. P ment and relation of parts may readily be spring co led about a portion of the 19 bar and interposed between the boss 13 and the Wrench head 6, which of course is fixed on the bar, and the spring tends to push the bar to the right in Figure 2, For locking the bar against rotation I provide four radially disposed grooves or notches 15in the face of the boss 12, and the cross pin lfi firmly fixed within a transverse opening in the bar, is forced into a pair of these grooves or notches by the spring for this purpose.
The funnel is thus adapted not only for use as a hand-piece for turning the nut, but simultaneously catches the oil spurting from the opening as the nut is removed from the crankcase. The removed nut may be re tained inits socketiwhile the funnel receives the oil, then removed therefrom,-or the nut maybe directly replaced before a fresh supply of oil is furnishedto the crank case.
, Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentisi i lQIn a hand implement, the combination with afunnel, of a rotary handle bar supported therein,transversely of the funnel inletopening,a Wrench head on the bar having a plurality of selective Wrench elements, an means for holding said bar in adjusted easiest;
" 2. The combination With a receptacle, of a rotarly handle bar supported therein with its ends projecting from said receptacle, a Wrench-head fixed on the handle bar, and a plurality of selectivewrench elements on said head, and c o-acting means on the'receptaele ciated With a lower portion of said funnel.
9. A liquid drainage implement comprising, a funnel, a handle bar for rotating said funnel, and a Wrench device carried by said bar and rotatable with said funnel.
10. A liquid drainage implement comprising, a funnel, a. bar spanning the mouth of said funnel, a Wrench supported centrally Within said funnel by said bar, and means associated with the exterior of said funnel for simultaneously rotating said funnel and said Wrench. D
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
