ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LESLIE ARTELLE MERRILL, OF BEVERLY, MASSACIIUSE'ITS.
DESIGN FOR A MATCH-BOX.
To all whom it 12m. concern..-
Be it known that I, LEsLIn ARTELLE MER- RILL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Beverly, county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and original Design forM-ateh-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The drawing represents a perspective view of my design for a match-box.
The external contour or form of my design is parallelogramic, all the surfaces thereof being equal, the sides and ends being of narrower dimensions than the top and bottom.
The design comprises a body portion Aand a cover B therefor, thelatter being about onethird the length of the complete article, the respective dimensions thereof being shown by the straight line C, extending across the top surface and down the side to the bottom line thereof. The lines D, defining the ends and side edges of the cover portions, are irregular from corner to corner, and the outlines of the top and bottom of the main portions E and F, respectively, of the box are of the same uneven character as those of the lines of the cover.
The surfaces of the end, top, and bottom and side portionsof the figure present a rough uneven appearance of broken lines, the same being thickly interspersed with veins G and rib-like corrugations II similar to those seen upon the dried leaves of plants.
Upon the upper surface of the main portion or match-box proper and at a point equidistant from all the corners thereof is the representation of aplain circular disk I, having two short arms J extended therefrom at diametrically opposite points. I propose to color the outer surfaces of the box with a brown dye or pigment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The design for a match-box, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinveution I have signed myname, in presence of two witnesses, this 17th day of March, 1897.
LESLIE ARTELLE MERRILL.
