UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES HARLOW AND JOHN M. POPE, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY.
DESIGN FOR A PITCHER, 86C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 23,353, dated June 12, 1894. Application filed September 1, 1893- Serial No. 484,608- Term of patent 3% years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES BARLOW and JOHN M. POPE, citizens of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented and produced a new and originalDesign for Pitchers and Articles of Toilet and Table Ware, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying d rawings, forming part thereof.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pitcher or ewer showing our design, and Fig. 2 is afront view enlarged of the handle of the same.
The leading features of our design are the scalloped and deeply indented and ornamented top; the curtain of raised ornamentation about the neck, the raised ornamentation in front, and the ornamentally shaped handle.
In Fig. 1, A. is the body of the article to which our design has been applied. The drawings show a pitcher, but the design can be applied equally to ewers, and other like articles of toilet and table-ware. B. is the neck, and (J. is the handle. D. is the top or rim. This rim is escalloped, as at D'. and is deeply indented as at D". Smaller indentations are shown at D'. At the foot of the neck B. encircling the article, and in raised or embossed Work is the curtain B.-of ornamental figures and designs. This curtain B. is as shown, irregular in shape, contour and ornamentation, and is composed as shown in the drawings, of various members, varying in outline and size. These members being in raised work, form together a bold and striking ornamentation encircling the article. At A. being the front of the vessel or article, is placed another series of raised or embossed figures of irregular shape, and varying contours connecting with the curtain B. and extending down from thence over the front, and covering a large portion of such front to near the bottom of the article. This series being also raised, forms another striking ornamentation, and in connection with the curtain B. not only make a pleasing and unique design in the plain ware, but also afliord a very effective basis for the application of gold or colors for the further ornamentation of the article. At or near the point where the lower end of the handle 0. joins the body A. is a raised sprig or spray with leaf, blossom, and other members, reaching around on the body A. and downward toward its foot. Upon the neck B. are placed at B". oval depressions or its. p In Fig. 2 is shownafrontview enlarged, of the handle 0. This handle is composed of the upper part 0'. and the lower part 0''. united by the central cushion G. The upper part 0. bears, as shown at 0'. raised leaves or sprays. The lower part 0. has its lower end ornamented with a scroll and pointed divisions. The manner in which the ends of the parts 0. and 0. end in scrolls, and are united by the central cushion G. is shown more clearly in Fig. 1.
lVhat we claim is- 1. The design for a pitcher and other articles substantially as shown and described.
